Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U in Review (News & Rumor Consolidation)
« on: July 12, 2013, 06:26:29 PM »
I just thought of a clever way for Nintendo to market the Wii U:

  • Create a Nintendo Direct explaining what the Wii U is to the gaming industry.
  • Explain the DS and 3DS and then show that the Wii U brings dual screen gaming to the TV.
  • Announce a price cut to $299.99.
  • Show case whatever third party games are available for the Wii U.

I had an original DS phat that scrapped, dented, scratched, and pounded beyond recognition.  It was even accidentally ran over with a lawnmower and survived. Hell, it even survived being sprayed with a water hose when my house was damaged by a fire next door. I let it sit in the window for about three or four days to dry before powering it up. It worked like new for the exception of causing GBA games to freeze, but this eventually stopped. Sadly, a burglar broke into my house and stole it before I could put it into more torture tests. I was planning to take the electrical components and shoot it with .22 caliber shorts and then put it back together.

303
I have been of the belief for a long time that a perfect storm is heading for the gaming industry. This is mainly due to the rising development costs that permeate the industry. This is the real reason as to why Nintendo gimped the Wii U. With Capcom laying off the workers recently it appears to me that a massive kulling of the game industry is going to happen soon.

304
Nintendo has always worked to make their systems successful.  Even in the glory days of the NES and SNES, they fought hard, tooth and nail, against third parties, stores, government agencies...  In spite of the revisionist history some may believe, Nintendo has never had a cake walk selling their stuff.

Why is it so hard for Nintendo to try and strengthen ties with third parties rather than let the status quo go on?

305
The bottom line is that Nintendo is going to have to work for a living to make the Wii U successful. They need a price cut by the end of November of this year. The same old routine that has gotten Nintendo by in the past will not cut this time around. Yes, Nintendo is going to have bribe certain developers, but they are too stupid to realize this and implement it. Grand Theft Auto V would have been a good money hat for Nintendo to bring over to the Wii U.

306
With the high development costs being what they are Nintendo could easily money hat weaker game developers into putting their games (exclusively) onto the Wii U. It is just that Nintendo's conservative approach is no longer working for them. It is quite possible that the Wii U might become Nintendo's worst selling console of all time. As for relying solely on their first party arsenal, Nintendo had better make some amazing games if they want to fork over my hard money in this day and age, and judging from their line up thus far, noting intrigues me enough to support the Wii U except for two games: X and Bayonetta 2.

Here is a scenario: Suppose that the Wii U, PS4 and Xbone are the only home consoles on the market in 2014. Because the Wii U has been on the market for a year longer than its rival systems it has a bigger install base. Now, because of the bigger install base the weaker game developers use the Wii U as their primary console to put their games onto the system. Companies such as EA, Activision, etc, also adopt the Wii U as the lead platform in a similar manner to the PS2 in its era.

Actually, just based on the how long Sony let the pre-orders go on for, I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 caught up to the Wii U in terms of year-end-2013 user base by mid-2014.  I'm not so sure about the Xbone, but it probably will as well by the end of 2014.  The big question will be how big a console-selling impact yet another Mario Kart and Smash Bros. will have on Wii U's 2014 hardware sales.

From what I understand most pre-orders have been froze at this point, or is it just with Gamestop? How many of those pre-orders are people buying the systems to sell on eBay for higher than the market price?

Does it really matter? Sold consoles are sold consoles.

Brood, I saw a Wii U with all the fixings selling for $239.99 with no shipping costs on eBay earlier today. When I went to buy it it was sold before I could purchase it. Now, when a game console is sold used then it does not register in the sales that a new purchase would if it were bought at retail.

Y so defensive?

the research is done. the numbers are in this thread. The Wii U is failing hard.
Solid concept. mediocre execution. piss poor post launch handling.
I hardly think a downloadable expansion and an strategic/action garden sim :P: is really gonna turn the tides for Nintendo in Japan, and much less so everywhere else, especially with the PS4 on the horizon.

I'm not saying the Wii U is dead.... but somebody keep the paddles on stand-by. This is gonna be a rough gen for us Nintendo enthusiast.

A price cut should be implemented ASAP.

I don't care if the 700, 000 is real or not.

It's a solid game for a platform badly in need of solid games.  If Nintendo isn't willing to invest in the Wii U how can we possibly expect third parties to?

Stole the words right out of my mouth.

If Nintendo themselves is making excuses on why to NOT support the Wii U, then I can't be mad at 3rd parties for doing the same exact thing...

Only Nintendo is releasing a Fire Emblem for the Wii U.  Yeah it's a crossover with Shin Megami Tensei that probably won't play like a traditional Fire Emblem but it still counts as a Fire Emblem game.  Hell the original idea came from IS looking for a studio to help make a Fire Emblem game that took place in the modern world, which eventually lead to them and Atlus making a SMT crossover.

So Nintendo is still supporting the Wii U with a Fire Emblem game of some kind that they are funding and publishing.  What about this is so hard for some of you to understand?

I said this before but it might be a great idea if IS collaborated with the developer of the recent XCOM game, Fireaxis, on an Advanced Wars and Fire Emblem game for the Wii U.

Nintendo has drastically underestimated how much resources are required to develop HD games.

Yeah, Nintendo completely ignored 8 years of everyone else in the industry discovering exactly what resources were needed for HD games. They were pretty stupid that way.

I do not feel the least bit sorry for Nintendo. Common sense would tell you that while they were managing the Wii they would research and develop their methods for making high profile games for the day when they would enter that field themselves. The learning curve for HD game development is non-existent at this point. It really just boils down to cost-benefit at this point. Hell, even small developers seems to make games faster than Nintendo.

Would defeated, maimed, and left for dead accurately describe the Wii U at this point?

So far I am disappointed with the Wii U. I was initially excited that the Wii U would be powerful enough to attract a larger percentage of third party support than previous Nintendo systems. As time went I have been increasingly dissapointed with the Wii U. Although I hold out hope it, the PS4 is looking even better by the day.

Edit:

The Wii U must be really doomed if its number one fan is worried about?

316
At this point the Wii U needs all of the games that it can get. Even if Nintendo made games that did not sell very well, but had a cult following, it is much better than the situation the Wii U is currently in with no games.

317
They upgraded Zone of the Enders to HD.

318
Because they say they don't like the results from loaning out their licences of late usch as Star Fox Assault and want to do it all inhouse now.

While Retro Studios is totally owned by Nintendo in some sense they are an outside company. All of the Nintendo IPs that have been handled by Retro have been very successful.

319
This is the main reason why I wish that Nintendo would create a unified system account between the 3DS and Wii U so that they could offer more discounts and deals for buying more games digitally.

320
Kid Icarus was a dead series and Nintendo marketed the **** out of that game and it sold well over a million plus units world wide. If Nintendo gave Metroid, F-Zero, and Star Fox to group of competent developers (Retro, Monster, Next Level, Platinum, etc) then there is not doubt that those games could sell as well as Kid ICarus did for the 3DS. Personally, I am tired of the same old Mario game being made every year, I want Nintendo to bring back their B-List games.
except it was technically Sakurai(who is no longer part of Nintendo although he still works with them heavily) who pushed for Kid Icarus... Nintendo said they wanted him to make something they wouldn't do and Sakurai said I want to do a new Kid Icarus and nintendo provided funding (along with some legal type aid on the Kid Icarus license)

What is to stop Nintendo from approaching their western partners in the same manner and giving them the keys to their dormant franchises?

321
It's like Iwata thinks this is high school. "If I dress really cute in these first-party games, that cute third-party boy will stop ignoring me and be my Valentine."
That's one hell of a business plan.

Broodwars tried to point my folly in suggesting that Nintendo needs a new boss to set the course straight.

322
So with the Wii U going into Panic mode I wonder if were going to see Intelligent Systems develop more games for the system.

They have become Portable centric as of late when you look at their out put.

Wii U
Game and Wario
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

3DS
Paper Mario
Fire Emblem awakening
Pushmo
Crashmo

The studio has seemed to have already hit up their main franchises between the two consoles with the exception of the Wars Series. I think it may be too early for a new Fire Emblem game (well a tradional one at least). So a Wii U wars game would be pretty fun espically if they bring back the music and art direction of Days of Ruin.

Only problem would it be a TBS game or more like the Gamecube Wars Games.

It would be cool if Intelligent Systems collaborated with Fireaxis to make a Wii U version of Advanced Wars.

323
Right now I imagine that Nintendo's investors are cycling through a stack of files for potential replacements for Iwata. Hell, they might even be fitting him for a janitor's outfit to scrub the toilets at Nintendo HQ. There is no way that a company with any sense would intentionally cut itself off of all the revenue that would be generated from third party licensing fees. I foresee a investor tea table uprising in the works for Nintendo.

Ubisoft is probably working on a port for the PS4 and XBone.

325
As long as Nintendo keeps those casual party games away from the Wii U then the sales of their better might spur interest in third parties.
