Western players are about to experience a lost Wii horror title.

The fifth Fatal Frame game, which was released as a Japanese Wii exclusive in 2008, will be localized for the first time as Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse in early 2023. Koei Tecmo will be the publisher for the release as it is multiplatform, even though Nintendo did have some ownership of the property at the time of its release.

TalkBack / Nintendo Direct To Air September 13
« on: September 12, 2022, 06:06:00 AM »

Line forms for the happening bunker on the left, please.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61507/nintendo-direct-to-air-september-13

The traditional pre-Tokyo Game Show presentation for Nintendo will return for another round.

Nintendo have announced a Direct tomorrow, to air at 10 a.m. EDT, 7 a.m. PDT, and 1600 CET. It is slated for roughly 40 minutes, and will focus on "Nintendo Switch games launching this winter".

This represents the first full Direct since February, with two game-specific shows (Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3) and a Partner Showcase in the interim.

Due to a period of national mourning in the United Kingdom, Nintendo UK will not be airing the Direct live: the announcements will be posted on the Nintendo Europe social channels and the show will be available as video-on-demand an hour later (1700 CET, 1600 BST).

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - September 15, 2022

So, uh, anything important happening this week?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61449/nintendo-downloads-september-15-2022

Things we missed last week: Champion Wrestler from Taito was the Archives game. Biting not included.

Last week had Splatoon 3, next week is nuts for me personally, and this week has the spectre of a potential Festivus declaration from Nintendo within an hour or two of this list going live. But in the meantime, it's a week of quantity if not necessarily qualtity outside of Japan. The most interesting items for this week for me personally are the third Voice of Cards title and indie darling Wayward Strand - say a prayer for Joe, he's going nuts with all the major indies this month - while the expensive titles of the week are the oft-delayed remake of the 2003 GameCube et al shooter XIII and the exactly-as-described Dungeons 3.

Japan has the major titles of the week overall, as I am about ready to storm Square Enix HQ to get them to announce a localization of Dragon Quest X's "Offline" edition. Other RPGs hitting this week are the recently announced for localization Trinity Trigger and Fairy Fencer F going tactical RPG.

TalkBack / Splatoon 3 Inks Opening Weekend Sales Record In Japan
« on: September 12, 2022, 03:26:34 AM »

Probably not worth extrapolating but a historical curiosity nonetheless.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61506/splatoon-3-inks-opening-weekend-sales-record-in-japan

Splatoon 3 has dominated the Japanese game sales charts with historic numbers.

Nintendo have confirmed that opening weekend sales for the shooter sequel totaled 3.45m units - the largest opening weekend game sales in Japanese history. Digital sales were included in the total.

The previous Switch record was held by Animal Crossing: New Horizons (1.88m physical according to Famitsu plus no more than 750k digital sales), while the previous best opening weekend was the 2010 launch of Pokemon Black and White which combined to sell 2.63m units. Splatoon 3 has managed to sell roughly 2/3 of the lifetime shipments of the Wii U original already.

TalkBack / Just Dance 2023 Announced
« on: September 10, 2022, 12:00:00 PM »

It's inevitable, like the news desk not knowing any of the musical acts in it.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61476/just-dance-2023-announced

One of the top third party sellers on Nintendo platforms is returning with a new online focus.

Just Dance 2023 was announced in the Ubisoft Forward presentation for a holiday release on Switch, with a new emphasis on "playing with anyone" (implying cross-platform multiplayer) and the ability to form private groups of up to 6 dancers.

New songs in the game include performances from Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, and Zara Larsson.

Retail preorders for the game have opened but all indicate the game is a "code-in-a-box" release, meaning it would be digital-only.

TalkBack / New Games And Trailers Shown At Disney Game Conference
« on: September 09, 2022, 05:50:04 PM »

When you need to be broken up, you can do stuff like this.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61442/new-games-and-trailers-shown-at-disney-game-conference

As part of their annual D23 event, Disney held a showcase today to show off several upcoming games published both by the company directly and from publishing partners.

  • A project shelved in 2016 when Disney last left the game industry has been revived as an apparent Switch exclusive. Disney Illusion Island is a four player co-op platformer that was announced only for a 2023 release on Switch. It is developed by Essex, England based studio Dlala, whose most famous work is the 2019 Microsoft reboot of Battletoads and assisting with Modus's Lost Words: Beyond the Page and Team17-published The Escapists.
  • Former WiiWare developer Empty Clip Studio (Groovin' Blocks) are working on a remastered version of the 1995 Genesis Gargoyles game, though no release date was given.
  • New DLC was announced for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga which will include characters from the upcoming Star Wars: Andor, as well as Star Wars: Rebels and the Clone Wars cartoon. The packs will launch on November 1.
  • Another trailer was shown for the upcoming Return to Monkey Island (September 19), as well as prequel shorts for Marvel's Midnight Suns that begin airing on October 31 (though the Switch version of Midnight Suns still has no release date).
  • New content was announced for the recently-released Disney Dreamlight Valley (adding a Toy Story world) and the forthcoming racer Disney Speedstorm (Monsters Inc.).

Putting the "giant" in "giant enemy crab" this time.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61434/new-story-details-and-pokemon-unveiled-for-pokemon-scarlet-and-violet-branded-hardware-announced

The latest trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has unveiled new details about the world of Paldea and its resident.

The story will focus on a "treasure hunt", though a group of delinquent students known as Team Star will be in the way of the hunt. A second story known as "Victory Road" after the traditional location will be focused on the gym challenge as well, with tests (possibly similar to the ones in Sword and Shield) being required to face the leader. Artist and gym leader Brassius was shown as a Grass-type specialist, though his "ace" Pokemon is a Sudowoodo (a normal Rock type) Terastalized into a grass type.

A new Pokemon was shown - the rock crab Klawf - in a larger "titan" form. This will be part of a questline involving hunting down rare "Herba Mystica".

Team Star will feature various squads focused on different types, and players will have to burst through the squad in an "Auto Battle" (battling multiple Pokemon with one) before taking on the various squad leaders. The auto-battling will also be available by a "Let's Go" function, where a Pokemon can be directed to grab items and battle on its own.

Nintendo have separately announced a new Switch OLED to launch on 11/4 that will be Scarlet and Violet themed, with the badges of the version-dependent schools. It will retail for US$359.99 or equivalent.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - September 8, 2022

Featuring the best selling game of September, and also Splatoon 3.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61406/nintendo-downloads-september-8-2022

Last week: Pac and Pal added to the Archives.

Welp, some of us have been charged for it and even gotten the 10% Gold Point bonus for it, but it's finally here: Splatoon 3 opens at midnight EDT Friday morning. Though it won't win the NPDs in September (NBA 2k23 comes out the same day and sells on six platforms), it'll probably dominate the conversation around here for a month barring any sudden Direct interruptions. And even then, we'll probably get some update chat - hopefully including electoral reform.

Other titles to watch this week: Humble Games publishes the most ambitious of the insurgent monster catching games (not to be confused with Pokemon Insurgence which I've put a stupid amount of time into this weekend) in Temtem, the newest Zen Studios joint has been Embraced by Saber in Circus Electrique, a kaiju dating sim that still won't top Dawn of the Monsters, and the newest joint from Mommy's Best Games: Game Type DX, the game that pays tribute to the best interface the Xbox 360 ever had. Also, in an apparent attempt to cause my ability to give a crap to underflow and actually max out, the threatened Disney Dreamlight Valley game comes into... wait, are we seriously doing Early Access on Switch? If so, why are they selling the stupid, stupider, and stupidest editions?

Clearly Rosalina was sick of sharing time in Vancouver with the Random Number Goddess.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61382/major-mario-kart-tour-update-removing-gacha-mechanics-adding-battle-mode

Mario Kart Tour is dropping a major update soon that will remove one of the game's most controversial aspects.

Beginning on October 5, Tour will add a "Spotlight Shop" where units and gear will be made directly available for purchase using the ingame "rubies" currency: alongside this, the "summoning pipe" (the game's gacha system) will be removed entirely. It will still be possible to purchase rubies with real money, as is the case with the Fortnite "V-Bucks".

Most of Nintendo's mobile products have or had featured some form of gacha mechanic, the major exceptions being the AR-based Pikmin Bloom and fixed-stage platformer Super Mario Run which sold its stages in a single in-app purchase. Fire Emblem Heroes offers a selection of "free" heroes (usually adding 2 a month) via a separate currency than its main summoning currency ("orbs").

The move could allow for Tour to expand service into countries where so-called "lootbox laws" which ban random chance elements exist, such as have been passed in Belgium and discussed in the Netherlands; other Nintendo mobile products have shut down service in those countries entirely.

Alongside the update, Tour will also add the traditional Mario Kart battle mode.

Given their location, this is starting to make PQube into Galarian Nicalis.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61378/second-independent-developer-accuses-publisher-pqube-of-withholding-money-and-rights

A third developer has come forward with accusations of improper business practices by frequent Switch publisher PQube.

Thailand-based Corecell Technology developed side-scrolling action game AeteronoBlade II, which was published in Europe by PQube in October 2019 (it was self-published in North America). According to Corecell, PQube only paid a small portion of the agreed-upon funds for the game's rights, and refused to turn over publishing rights following the agreement's termination in October 2020.

Currently, the game is not available on the European eShop though it can be purchased with North America-based accounts. Similar accusations of withholding funds and publishing rights were made by the Indonesia-based developers of the recently delayed A Space for the Unbound.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - September 1, 2022

Curl up with a caramel and hot fudge pizza - and accept that yes, this IS a Jojo reference.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61364/nintendo-downloads-september-1-2022

Things we missed last week: Super Volleyball in the archives.

It's amazing that as soon as the calendar turns over to September, the games just start spewing like a firehose. For my money - which will be spent gladly this weekend, but mostly in various 3DS DLC shops (assuming you linked your Nintendo Network and Switch eShop accounts, you can add funds here since cards won't work on system anymore) the big game of the week is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection (review from Neal here). Though I would be remiss for not mentioning some other games that sadly don't come with pizza coupons: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R as that one Sony State of Play will pay off entirely in the next four weeks, NIS's third classics collection, and an RPG based on the Made in Abyss manga/anime which given its M and Z ratings in NA and Japan respectively I didn't realize was a seinen show.

Smaller titles that might be worth checking in on this week: Indie World veteran Ooblets, a LEGO mascot brawler (think Smash) that originated on Apple Arcade, 3D platformer Tinykin, and the wholesome Here Comes Niko. Though most of us will probably get charged for Splatoon 3 this week for the 10% refund, and I will begin my call for some form of electoral reform in the Splatfest or else I'll be finding a party of 3 to go into the second half with.

TalkBack / Denuvo DRM Solution Announces Switch-Specific Version
« on: August 24, 2022, 06:05:39 AM »

One suspects it'll be about as effective as a YouTube subscription box.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61320/denuvo-drm-solution-announces-switch-specific-version

After multiple reports about running Switch games on PC, a major name in PC game DRM has announced Switch "support".

The Denuvo DRM frequently seen on PC games has been adapted to the Switch successfully, according to its creator Irdeto. The company claims more than a thousand PC titles use the digital rights management software to prevent piracy, with the aim of preventing multiplatform games with Switch releases being used as a workaround.

Although Irdeto claims the software has "no impact on the gaming experience", the software on PC has been found to lower performance - in some cases, significantly.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61317/masahiro-sakurai-opens-youtube-channel-to-discuss-game-development

Following the completion of Smash Ultimate, series lead Masahiro Sakurai is taking his talents to YouTube.

The technically independent developer has opened a channel called "Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games" that will go into his design philosophies and knowledge.

Sakurai had been posting daily screenshots on his social media from Smash Ultimate until apparently running out of them recently, leading to speculation on his next step. He has expressed that the creation of the channel was intended to "give back to the game industry".

Some pretty damning accusations made toward a regular Switch publisher.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61316/pqube-accused-of-predatory-practices-as-a-space-for-the-unbound-delayed

A frequent Switch publisher is being accused of predatory business practices involving the release of an independent game planned for release shortly.

A Space for the Unbound is an adventure game set in Indonesia, which was developed by the Indonesian developer Mojiken and published by Toge Productions (publishers of Coffee Talk), which was announced for Switch release in 2021. The game was to be published on consoles by British publisher PQube.

In a statement (embedded Twitter post below), Mojiken and Toge are accusing PQube of "predatory business practices", which include allegedly applying for a "diversity grant" from an unnamed console manufacturer in 2020, withholding the funds from Mojiken, and not even disclosing the existence of the grant until it was discovered in March of this year. The agreement to publish A Space for the Unbound has been terminated, though PQube is still refusing to turn control back over.

UPDATED 8:20 am E.T.: PQube have issued a response via Video Games Chronicle which states in part "Toge Productions have sought for some time to unilaterally enforce unreasonable revised terms to our agreement and it is disappointing that, as a result of not achieving that and despite PQube’s significant efforts to accommodate this, they have sought to deal with the matter in this way. We will respond through the appropriate channels".
