« on: December 11, 2003, 01:52:19 PM »
You could win your very own copy of Fire Emblem with a brand new Flame GBA SP to play it on!

Last week Planet Trivia winner Rimmer won himself a Flame GBA SP and Intelligent System's hot new strategy game, Fire Emblem.  You could win too--that is, if you know your Nintendo music!

TYP will play songs from five games released on Nintendo systems--all you have to do is name the game in a PM to TYP!  We'll also have a bonus trivia question for each game, so don't let all that preperation for last week go to waste!

To familiarize yourself with the rules and how to connect to the radio stream, we ask that you read the official rules.  Since competitors will be playing for a very substantial prize, we will be strictly enforcing them.

As Radio Trivia regulars already know, there is a limit of 30 standard listeners on our Live365 radio stream when broadcasting live.  As a large turnout is expected for this Radio Trivia session, we recommend you arrive in the chatroom early.  TYP will begin the live broadcast at 10:15 PM Central (8:15 Pacific, 11:15 Eastern).  Contestants may want to sign up for a Live365 Preferred Membership, which includes a 7-day free trial period, to be assured a spot.  Anyone signed up for this service will be able to listen even if the station is "full".

The operation in question? "Ditch the GameCube!"

ATARI RELEASES MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE® - OPERATION SURMA

IMF Agent Ethan Hunt Infiltrates PlayStation®2, Xbox® and Game Boy® Advance

LOS ANGELES - Dec. 9, 2003 - Infiltrating stores nationwide today, Atari's Mission: Impossible® - Operation Surma brings all the action and intrigue of the Mission: Impossible movie franchise to the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft and the Game Boy® Advance.  Developed by Atari's Paradigm Entertainment, Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma presents players with a true mission impossible as they become IMF agent Ethan Hunt in an effort to stop the diabolical plans of the Surma Corporation.

"With Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma, players will be thrust into an authentic Mission: Impossible experience, complete with the latest spy gadgets, stealth action, incredible combat and plot-twisting suspense fans have come to expect from the franchise," said Steve Allison, vice president of marketing, Atari Inc.'s Los Angeles studio.  "The stealth action category continues to surprise gamers with new and innovative game play experiences and Operation Surma is no exception.  Our unique connection to one of today's strongest Hollywood movie franchises, will complement our focus on delivering incredible game play with all of the powerful lead characters, fascinating villains, elaborate double-crosses and cunning treachery of a real Mission: Impossible."

In Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma, players step into the role of Ethan Hunt as he traverses the globe uncovering the insidious mysteries behind the malevolent Surma Corporation and its newly developed virus, the Ice Worm, which allows Surma to break into any computer system in the world. Armed with the hyper-cool, super spy technology and weaponry inspired by the Mission: Impossible movies, such as miniature remote-controlled devices, micro cameras, tranquilizing darts and character disguises, Hunt must lead his elite team in preventing Surma Corp. from taking over the world.

Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma features groundbreaking gameplay that empowers players to choose the tactics and game play style they wish to use in tackling mission objectives.  For example, as Hunt, a player can forge an uneasy alliance with questionable characters in order to gain the upper hand against an overwhelming enemy force; or, the player can charge in, blasting away with the latest top secret IMF weapon; or, the player can slide silently in and out of the shadows, penetrating enemy lairs unnoticed. Ultimately, the nature of the adventure lies in the player's hands.  Ving Rhames, who played Luther Stickell in both Mission: Impossible feature films, reprises his role by lending his voice and likeness in the game.  As part of the IMF team assigned to assist Ethan Hunt in his efforts, Luther will provide critical mission intelligence, hack security systems and generally sweep target areas clear of enemy detection devices, thus allowing Hunt to penetrate more effectively.

Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma Features: . Open-Ended Gameplay:  Players will be empowered to play the game the way they like.  Take out a guard and dispose of his body, sneak behind the guard and slip by unnoticed, distract the guard to another area, tranquilize the guard remotely or even take him prisoner are just a few options at the players disposal for nearly every situation. . Super Spy Gadgets:  As with any Mission: Impossible, the gadgets are where it's at.   Operation Surma will put dozens of super-cool gadgets at players fingertips, including: The Wasp, a miniature remote-controlled "bug" with a devastating "sting"; a directional microphone used to overhear distant conversations; binoculars featuring a digital camera for evidence gathering; Electronic Warfare darts for disabling critical electronic devices; and, much more. . Agent Moves and Abilities:  As Ethan Hunt, players will have at their disposal all the moves that any respectable super agent has spent years perfecting, including: vaulting and mantling of objects; hand walking on ledges; wall hugging through tight spaces; crouching and creeping to keep a low profile; hand-over-hand maneuvering on pipes and girders.  In addition, players will be able to execute numerous stealth disabling, restraining and finishing maneuvers on enemy characters. . Gameplay Locations:  Led by Mission Commander Swanbeck, players will follow clues and undertake missions in exotic locations around the world, including: the Los Muertos research facility in the southwestern United States; Sansara Prison in Northern Africa; and, Yugaria, a fictional eastern European country.

Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma is now available at retail stores nationwide with an estimated retail price of $49.95 and an ESRB rating of "T" for Teen.  Additional information about Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma can be found online at www.mi-game.com.

TalkBack / Summer Videogame Class Announced
« on: November 19, 2003, 01:19:21 PM »
VideoGame.Net and Penn State University team up for simple game-making (and playing) fun!

THINK SPACE CAMP SOUNDS COOL? WELL WAIT UNTIL YOU CHECK OUT THE VIDEOGAME.NET EXPERIENCE HOSTED BY PENN STATE

Fun And Exciting Program That Teaches Kids And Adults How To Make Video Games

PHILADELPHIA, NOV 19, 2003 - VideoGame.Net and Penn State University announced today the VideoGame.Net Experience. A 13-week interactive education program focused on teaching kids and adults how to make videogames.

The VideoGame.Net Experience was conceived by Ed Fleming, President and Founder of VideoGame.Net, as an educational and entertaining program designed to help folks learn about the videogame industry and to help them make their own games. Started as a youth summer camp, the VideoGame.Net Experience has expanded into a year-round programs for both children and adults.

"The 2003 summer camp was very successful and attracted hundreds of gamers from across the country," said Ed Fleming. "The VideoGame.Net Experience concept gets people to understand what it takes to make videogames. To continue the success of the summer programs, we are teaming up with Penn State University to deliver the program again this fall, in a unique Saturday format."

The VideoGame.Net Experience provides gamers first-hand experience with the tools needed to develop videogames. The VideoGame.Net Experience fall program teaches gamers how to use Flash, Photoshop, Game Maker and other software for designing 2D-based games.

Penn State Great Valley and Penn State Delaware County will offer the VideoGame.Net Experience fall program. The schools will host an Introduction to 2D Game Design class for new students, and for returning gamers, they will offer an Intermediate 2D Game Design class. For kids in 6th through 12th grades the Introduction to 2D Games classes start December, 6 2003 and January 17, 2003, and run for 13 Saturdays. The adult version of Introduction to 2D Games starts in April 2004 and will run on Monday and Wednesday nights for seven weeks.

While in class gamers use the VideoGame.Net website as a one-stop-shop resource for all of their game development needs. The site provides game development tips, program templates, tutorials and Tribes - an online gaming community where budding developers can work with their friends to create some cool games. During the week, when the gamers are at home, they have access to the VideoGame.Net website where they can work on their games, chat with their gaming buddies or look up review information on anyone of 11,000 games published in the US since 1972.

Once participants in the VideoGame.Net Experience have completed a game they can have it posted on VideoGame.Net for anyone on the Internet to play. In addition to providing development services and game hosting, the VideoGame.Net website also provides gaming enthusiasts with scavenger hunts and contests, daily news, A.I. robots, and discussion boards.

"The fall program focuses on 2D game development and the history of game making," said David Kramer, VideoGame.Net's Director of Art Programs. "One of the other really cool parts of the program is our Arcade. We offer kids the chance to play some of the very best new and pre-released games as well as retro-classics for the old NES and even Atari. This gives the kids a well rounded idea of where videogames came from and where they are going."

In 2004, the VideoGame.Net Experience will be extended to additional colleges and universities. In addition to the new locations, the VideoGame.Net Experience will also extend its class offerings with an Advanced 2D Game Design program and an Introduction to 3D Game Design class. In 2005 and beyond, VideoGame.Net expects to offer additional 3D game classes, XGameStation design and even videogame journalism. "I really love where VideoGame.Net is going with the Experience program. The kids are having a blast and the parents really like it too," stated Ed Fleming, "I had one of the kids tell me that he and his father went to Space Camp(TM) and had a great time, but he said, the VideoGame.Net camp was an even cooler experience. That made my day!"

Londonner: good luck with the TFT monitor search.  I wouldn't try to find a monitor that has a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio with the GameCube's signal.  Instead, try looking for a monitor with a good set of display options, such as a native through option (just using 640x480 or 640x768 pixels of the tft screen) or some integer multiple (1280x960 pixels of the tft screen).  That sort of information is hard to hunt down, unfortunately :-/

I just reopened the VGA connector in the cable I reviewed.  If V-sync and H-sync ground is pin 10, as online documentation leads me to believe, it does have grounding for Sync.  (Thin metal wires connect a few pins together to ground to one bigger wire.)   I guess that means it IS the insulation.  It makes sense: it's a D-Terminal cable, not a VGA cable, after all.

Everybody salute your governor as he ships to stores!

ATARI SHIPS TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES

Arnold Schwarzenegger Likeness and Voice Make First Ever Videogame Appearance; Exclusive Film Footage Available

LOS ANGELES - Nov. 11, 2003 - Atari today announced that it has shipped Terminator®3: Rise of the MachinesT, for the PlayStation® 2 computer entertainment system, the XboxT videogame system from Microsoft and Game Boy® Advance, to retail stores nationwide.  Based on this summer's blockbuster motion picture from Intermedia, IMF and C2 Pictures, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is a first-person action game that allows players to become Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator.  Developed by Black Ops, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines marks the first time Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice and likeness has ever appeared in a videogame -- the involvement of Claire Danes, Nick Stahl and Kristanna Lokken rounds out the stellar videogame cast.

"With both the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines movie DVD and videogame releasing today, fans can watch the Terminator in action on their home theaters and one minute later become the Terminator on their favorite game system," said Steve Allison, vice president of marketing, Atari, Inc.'s Los Angeles studio.  "The Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines videogame takes the movie to an entirely new level.  Not only do players get to play through the plot of the feature film nearly line for line, but they'll also be able to experience first-hand everything that happened just prior to the feature film's start.  How was the Terminator sent back this time?  How did he kill John Connor?  And, what does SkyNet really look like?  All of these questions, and more, are answered in the game."

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines continues Atari's trend of bringing outstanding film properties to life in the interactive realm complete with Hollywood talent, feature film footage, dramatic plots that interweave with the movie, authentic sound tracks and much more.  Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines features 15 minutes of footage taken straight from the blockbuster film that helps set up key situations and story-related game elements.  An additional five-minute segment, filmed by director Jonathan Mostow, exclusive to the DVD and videogame features Arnold Schwarzenegger and sheds new light on the mythology behind the origins of the Terminator.  Players will also be treated to extensive behind-the-scenes footage from both the videogame and feature film, including an eight-minute segment detailing the entire making of the game.

The Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines videogame storyline will weave in and out of the movie script as players encounter scenarios similar to those faced by the Terminator where John Connor must be protected from the threat of the T-X and the initial rise of the machines, to the apocalyptic future where the War of the Machines is waged on all fronts.  While following the feature film's plot closely, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines will go one step further by providing fans of the Terminator series with a deeper look into the movie's universe and the role of the Terminator, a futuristic fighting machine reprogrammed to save humanity from the SkyNet Armageddon.

As the Terminator, players will face swarms of enemies in first-person action from the wastelands of the future to present-day Los Angeles. Military bases, laboratories and downtown Los Angeles are just a few of the more than 20 unique locations found in the game, which have been taken straight from the current Terminator timeline of events.  In addition, more than 20 futuristic and modern-day weapons will be at the player's disposal for use in terminating any enemy in the most efficient manner possible, including the SkyNet Arc-Laser, Tech-Com Micro Rocket Launcher and the SkyNet Assault Cannon.

Much like the feature film, when Terminators clash in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines all hell is sure to break loose.  Terminators are designed to utilize the most readily and efficient means available to eliminate any particular foe -- when that enemy is a Terminator this leads to absolutely brutal hand-to-hand combat.  Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines will allow player's to engage in true movie-like Terminator combat as they repeatedly face the ultimate killing machine, the T-X, throughout the single-player game.  Smashing opponents into walls, massive two-handed chops and crushing kicks are just a few of the dozens of moves in the Terminator's arsenal.

A unique twist in the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines story will also allow players to operate the Terminator before it was reprogrammed in the future to save John Connor.  As a result, players will be able to test their terminating skills against battle-hardened Tech Com special forces from the future as they fight alongside and utilize SkyNet's advanced weaponry, including Future Killer tanks and flyers, fixed gun emplacements as well as other Terminators in an effort to crush the last remnants of mankind.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is now available at retail stores nationwide with an estimated retail price of $49.95 and an ESRB rating of "T" for Teen.  Additional information about Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines can be found online at www.t3game.com.

« on: November 09, 2003, 07:17:28 PM »
The modified D-sub cable for VGA use works very well, though only for progressive scan games.  I also fell victim to a poor soldering job on the VGA connector and had to ask my roommate for a quick repair.  (Never trust a computer scientist such as myself with a soldering iron!)

I'll actually be looking into another professional GameCube VGA solution soon and will be posting my impressions, so keep an eye out!  As for DVI input, I really can't help you out.  I'd have bought a TFT screen with a VGA port for just such versatility, myself.  DVI isn't the universal standard yet, after all.  Playing your GC on a LCD monitor may not look as good as you hope, either: LCD screens often stretch non-native resolutions

If it were only one game, I'd say it was a defective disc.  But yeah, it sounds like your GameCube is starting to go.

However, I must comment on smilingpsycho's Metroid statement: it is a fairly well known fact that Metroid Prime has freezing glitches.  I've seen it happen on many GameCubes with many copies--even at Dolby's GDC booth!  Although it is a recurring problem for me with Metroid Prime, I have never had similar problems with any other game.  So for those having problems with Metroid, and only Metroid, don't do anything drastic.

TalkBack / Xlink Messenger to Support GameCube!
« on: November 01, 2003, 09:25:28 AM »
That’s right!  The next release of the most comprehensive, free Xbox tunneling software available will support the GameCube!

Update:  A router is not needed, but the console and PC must be on the same network, and the PC must have access to certain internet ports.  Also, Linux and Macintosh builds of XLink Messenger are planned shortly after Kai's Windows debut!

The XLink team is hard at work on an overhauled version of its popular Xbox tunneling software, XLink Messenger.  Planet GameCube has confirmed that, despite the “X” in its title, the third major release (codenamed Kai) will fully support the GameCube!

The XLink team says initial testing with the GameCube and their tunneling software ran “nice and smooth.” It seems the packet caching engine originally designed for Xbox games is just as effective with the LAN-capable GameCube games currently available.

XLink Messenger GameCube support is identical to its Xbox support.  The XLink Messenger, which runs on Windows-based PCs, has three modes: messenger,  WGN and Rooms.  Messenger Mode features a personal message interface where you can chat and play 1-on-1.  WGN (World Gaming Network) Mode hooks your GameCube to a worldwide virtual LAN resembling Xbox Live!  Rooms Mode lies somewhere in-between, letting users form and play within public and password-protected rooms organized by game.  The XLink Messenger even boasts real-time voice streaming through a PC microphone!

So, what will you need to play GameCube games online with the XLink Messenger?  Besides a BBA and a GC game with LAN support, you’ll need a PC running Windows 95 or later, a broadband connection, and a network to connect the GC to your PC.

RC3 Kai is still in the coding stages, but it is progressing nicely.  The XLink crew aims to release the software before the end of the year.  You can visit XLink's website for more details on the XLink scene, but PGC will be sure to keep you updated as the release nears completion!

Special thanks goes out to gb_20m for the tip!

TalkBack / New 5.1 and 2.1 Sound System Announced
« on: October 27, 2003, 12:12:07 PM »
Thrustmaster brings 5.1 channels of aural goodness to the European market.

THRUSTMASTER ENABLES GAMERS TO LIVE THE SOUND EXPERIENCE:

LONDON, 27th October, 2003 - Thrustmaster announces the two latest entries in its multi-platform range of accessories: the 5.1 Sound System and 2.1 Sound System. More powerful than the previous speaker kits, these are fully compatible with all video game consoles - including Playstation 2, Xbox and GameCube - as well as with PC, DVD players, TV sets and VCRs.

"Following the success of the sound systems we have released to date and in order to meet the increasing demand from gamers for this type of accessory, Thrustmaster has created two new high-performance sound solutions that are even more powerful and more attractive, both in terms of their design and their price!" states Jocelyn Denis, Product Manager at Thrustmaster.

"Dolby Digital is fast becoming the new standard for games and movies," explains Jocelyn Denis. "Surround sound provides stunning sensations which more and more people are eager to experience when playing games or watching DVDs - not only on a stand-alone DVD player, but also on PC and consoles. Thrustmaster's new 5.1 Sound System has been designed to perfectly meet these consumers' expectations."

Thrustmaster's new 5.1 Sound System, which brings the most competitive price on the market, has been created with design in mind. Even more sleek and stylish than its predecessor, this attractive system perfectly complements any room. The 5.1 Sound System is a premium speaker kit that delivers the finest and most powerful sound, adding a whole new dimension to games and DVDs and bringing them to life.

Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic certified, the 5.1 Sound System features a Dolby Digital decoder integrated into its wooden subwoofer, five high-quality satellite speakers, a set of audio cables and an infrared remote control.

The Dolby Digital decoder automatically detects and identifies the sound signals it receives: stereo, Dolby Surround (PS one, PlayStation 2), Pro Logic (GameCube) or Dolby Digital (Xbox, some PS2 games, DVDs). At 30 Watts RMS wooden subwoofer provides impressive low frequency effects for sounds such as explosions, while its five independent 10 Watts RMS satellite speakers enhance 3D effects in games and movies. Now hear the enemies approaching from behind or driving by on either side! Each satellite speaker can be fixed to the wall and includes independent swiveling tweeters, with treble and bass controls for customizable sound.

The infrared remote control provides users with complete control over the entire system - including each speaker's volume - from the comfort of a couch or chair.

Surrounded by the power of Thrustmaster's 5.1 Sound System, you simply won't believe your ears!

This Monster CSVC-1 adapter looks promising.

Of course, Monster cables are very expensive, but it can be found for a cheaper price elsewhere online

This Belkin adapter probably works, but its quality is suspect (very cheap!):
