Preorder your Wii now and get a free game!

Do you live in Australia?  Then you can preorder your Wii from a Toys 'R Us store with a AUS$50 deposit and get a free (undisclosed) game when you pick it up in November!  The website does not provide an anticipated price for the system.

This seems to be a limited time promotional offer from Toys 'R Us, and not a standard preorder deal for early adopters, though we may see similar offers appear around the world as November approaches.

TalkBack / Opera Included in Wii
« on: June 03, 2006, 01:50:35 PM »
An interview discloses quite a few new details about the console web browser, including its responsiveness, Wii-customized internet applications, and supported technologies.

Website Cubed3 recently interviewed Scott Hedrick, vice president of Opera for Devices, about the mysterious Opera browser for Wii.  Hedrick reveals quite a few tidbits.

Cubed3: Will the Opera browser be embedded from launch on the 512MB internal Flash or included with the system via a memory card?

Scott Hedrick: The Opera browser is saved to the Flash ROM on the Wii console, and does not require a separate memory card as Opera for DS does. The browser can be launched in only a few seconds, immediately delivering a great user experience.

That's right, Wii owners can browse the internet without any additional software, much like PictoChat on Nintendo DS. Hedrick also says web applications could be tailored for Wii, and that the Opera browser can be used for more than just the internet.

SH: In addition to being a full Web browser, Opera also serves as a presentation engine for devices, such as set-top boxes. This means that you it is possible to create dynamic Web-based applications and user interfaces using Web technology running on Opera – avoiding the use of native code such as C++. Nintendo has not released information on its specific use of Opera, but one can imagine the possibilities of what a browser can deliver to a game on a console that is always connected beyond simply browsing the Web.

Could an online version of PictoChat (or similar communications software) be in the works using Opera technologies?

For further comments on the Wii remote, which technologies are supported (JavaScript is confirmed), and Opera's possibilities, be sure to read the whole interview.

TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: Mega Man ZX
« on: May 16, 2006, 07:07:52 PM »
It's Mega Man!  It's Zero!  No, wait, it's another spin-off in the Mega Man universe!

Although Capcom made some big announcements for Nintendo platforms at E3, the only playable, new game on display for a Nintendo system was Mega Man ZX for the DS.  Fortunately for DS owners, it looks to be in fine shape.

Judging from the name one would think the game features Mega Man X, or at least Zero.  Nope, it instead features two spunky kids living hundreds of years after Mega Man X and Zero roamed the earth.  Sure, Vent and Aile are uninteresting tween anime characters, but as part of a special ops force they can combine their metal suits with biometal scraps they collect, which are essentially chunks of metal holding memories of X and Zero's ancient powers.

The demo has two levels on display—one for the guy and one for the girl.  The boy's straightforward level was clearly an early stage set in an amusement park, complete with a giant UFO catcher room and a giant metool mini-boss.  The girl had to trek through a much more treacherous futuristic power plant with saw-weilding, kid-crushing baddies and traps.  While the characters had different biometals, their basic gameplay remained the same.  Without an equipped Biometal the character has no offense but can crawl through tight passageways.  Tapping X freezes the action and brings up a ring of biometal scraps the hero possesses.  After selecting one and pushing X the hero will transform, assuming the powers of a robot from yesteryear.  The hero can wall jump, dash forward with L or a double-tap on the D-pad, and attack with the main (Y) or secondary (R) weapon. I have not kept up with the Mega Man series over the years, so I could not recognize the powers available in the E3 demo, but the forms usually involved Zero's light sword or Mega Man X's blaster along with a flashier secondary weapon (each of which has its own power meter).  These attacks included everything from a punch to scattered balls of energy.

Mega Man ZX may introduce yet another variation of the Mega Man universe, but it looks like it will have the same challenging platforming and combat fans of the series expect, with some extra variety to boot.

TalkBack / REVIEWS: New Super Mario Bros.
« on: May 15, 2006, 10:27:37 PM »
The fire flower makes its triumphant return.

This game's title could not be more definitive, as the Marios' latest adventure really does return the plumbers to their super roots.  While Mario may be rendered in 3D, his game is totally old-school.  Running and jumping once again reign supreme, ousting punches, air meters and all that other froufrou for delicious mushrooms.  Mario handles with traction somewhere between Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64, and his jump is close to SMB3's but with a slower descent. Of course, he also brings some of the new moves he has learned over the years, such as triple jumps and ground pounds. New Super Mario Bros. (NSMB) features the best wall jump yet—there is precious little more satisfying than saving oneself from a perilous pit with a knee-jerk wall-jump.  Mario may not control as he did in any of the classic Mario games, but he still feels perfect.

And that means you will have no excuse when a vicious water or fortress level hands you your rear end.  Make no mistake:  you will cry out in despair.

The game never gets as brutal as SMB2 (Japan) or Super Mario World's Outrageous, but a few levels come close.  They are by no means "dumbed down" to appease inexperienced or former gamers, though they tend to be simpler in structure.  New Super Mario Bros. contains very linear levels with either rightward or upward progression. Many of them are highly reminiscent of previous games, and mustachioed gurus will recognize levels in the style of SMB's underground caverns, SMB3's Pipe Maze world, and SMW's ghost houses.  Players will similarly welcome updated versions of classic baddies and platforms, often used unexpectedly, such as when Mario is forced to dance on moving platforms between two piranha plants.   The game contains the nooks and crannies one would expect from a Mario game, usually concealing each level's three star coins.  A handful of stages in each world contain secret exits leading to warp cannons, warp pipes or extra stages.  Secret exits give the game longevity for those interested, but the simple world map layouts nowhere near approach the complexity and expansiveness of Super Mario World with its definitive Star Road and Special World.

Not surprisingly, many of NSMB's secrets require the use of its new power-ups.  The most interesting and admirably used power-up, or perhaps power-down, is the unassuming mini-mushroom.  Mini Mario can fit through tiny pipes or cracks and run on water.  He also has a very fluttery jump, giving him far superior jumping distance and aerial evasion.  Of course, such awesomeness has its price—Mario dies with one hit.  However, NSMB misses the mark with its other two new power-ups.  The mega mushroom, which allows a temporarily huge plumber to stroll through the level, is little more than a glorified star.  The seemingly clever Shell Mario, in which Mario apparently steals and wears http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/mariopedia/k.shtml#Kooper>Kooper's blue shell), also has its faults.  Mario can duck into his shell to become invincible, like a more potent hammer bros. suit from SMB3, or dash in his shell to break blocks, bounce against walls, and knock down enemies. However, this suit is annoying as often as it is useful, since Mario slides into his shell automatically once he reaches maximum velocity and the player must release the run button to cancel.  And since deployed power-ups do not return to the item reserve spot in NSMB, unlike they did in SMW, the player is forced to either live with the liability of running too fast or ditch the suit by intentionally taking damage.

The game has other setbacks, too.  While the levels are difficult, they also provide a bucketful of 1-ups, nullifying the threat of losing your lives before reaching a save point.  Also, while the soundtrack is mostly good, it more closely resembles Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Sunshine's than the 2D games', which I find unsettling.  Nintendo should have saved the tower (fortress) music for the next Zelda game, and NSMB's rendition of the death jingle (borrowed from Super Mario 64 DS) is pathetic.  Also, while the pre-rendered environment graphics are never distracting or ambiguous, they are somewhat plain.

Don't let my parade of complaints mislead you, though—I simply expect the very best from a "real" Super Mario game.  Honestly, these problems aren't nearly enough to keep a good game down.  After all, Super Mario World only had two power-ups, and many consider it to be the best in the series.  Frankly, for all of my nitpicking, I almost always had a smile on my face.  Mario's controls are so well-honed that players can have fun simply running around.  They'll just have more of it if they actually play the game.  New Super Mario Bros. tweaks "cameo" gameplay elements from so many sources that it is consistently fresh and constantly changing, and that, above all else, is what makes a genuine Mario game so incredible.

Pros:

  • Spot-on controls
  • Clever use of old and new game mechanics
  • Friggin' hard castles with surprisingly fun bosses
  • Collecting star coins is a challenge, not a chore
  • Unpredictable two-player versus mode

           Cons:

  • Plastic backgrounds
  • Mismatched music
  • Uninteresting Super Mario 64 DS multiplayer mini-games
  • Where is the "Game Over" screen?

                   Graphics:  8.0
Fantastic character animations, some impressive 3D models and vibrant lava effects caught my eye, but most environments lack the Mario universe's organic charm.  High production values are not a substitute for personality.

                   Sound:  8.0
I like the soundtrack—I really do—but half of it does not become a 2D Mario platformer.  Most of the sound effects are perfect, and thankfully Mario's voice does not accompany power-ups, but a few significant duds slipped through.

                   Control:  9.5
I wish I could say Mario controls absolutely perfectly, because he does until you grab the koopa shell suit.  Wall jump for the win.

                          Gameplay:  9.0
I wish I could say New Super Mario Bros. is perfect, but slightly disappointing power-ups and an underachieving world map keep it from reaching legendary status.  Even so, the game is superb and will hold gamers' attention for hours on end.

           Lastability:  8.0
Oh sure, you may demolish the final boss in a matter of hours, but if you're deluded enough to think that encompasses "beating" the game, you better put your diapers on. Before you're done, you'll have to jump across winged "?" blocks, wall-jump consecutively a dozen times, defeat bosses as Mini Mario, and worse.

           Final:  9.0
New Super Mario Bros. is a must for any Nintendo fan and is easily the system's best platformer.  Yoshi's Island is still the champion of 2D platform exploration, and SMB3 and SMW are tied at first for sheer ingenuity, but NSMB is still a damn fine game holding clever surprises for players young and old.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Super Mario Galaxy
    « on: May 12, 2006, 09:01:50 AM »
An interview with longtime Mario series contributor Takashi Tezuka reveals further details on the game’s evolution, abandoned moves, and the E3 demo.

Last updated: 05/12/2006 by Michael "TYP" Cole

Super Mario Galaxy was on display at E3 2006, consisting of tiny planets.  The demo provided branching, linear paths among the planets with goombas, coins, platforming and bosses.  Mario was controlled much like in previous games using the analog stick, Z and A for Mario’s standard set of moves in 3D, and shaking either the nunchuck or remote performed a spin jump.  The Wii remote and B trigger button act together as a pointing device used to collect star shards and pull elastic items.

PGC recently had a chance to talk with Takashi Tezuka about Super Mario Galaxy, who is performing a supervisory role on the title.  He confirmed that the demo was a “compressed environment" designed to show off many of the game’s different concepts, and that the tiny planets will fit into the Mario universe in the final game. Although the large planet in the demo’s background remains a mystery, Mr. Tezuka explained that the tiny planets evolved from Mr. Miyamoto’s experiments with Mario running on spheres and a desire to take Mario outside of his traditional confines.

When asked about controlling Mario on Wii, Mr. Tezuka revealed that the team had initially designed many different moves for Mario triggered through gestures.  However, Mr. Miyamoto found that these moves were complicated and unnecessary, so he "upended the tea table" by asking for their removal.  Still, Tezuka confirmed that the full game will have more uses for the remote than are found in the E3 demo.  He also told us that changes such as the automated camera were a result of internal discussions among the Super Mario Sunshine team, admitting that Super Mario Sunshine’s camera made the game more complicated.

There are still many things about Super Mario Galaxy yet to be revealed.  Stay tuned to PGC in the coming months for further details on the game.

TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: DK: King of Swing DS
    « on: May 11, 2006, 07:18:18 AM »
Swing with Donkey and Diddy in this sequel to last year’s GBA puzzle-platformer.

Donkey Kong: King of Swing for GBA was among the most surprising puzzle games for the GBA.  Its clever and simple controls yielded painfully-difficult yet addictive challenges, and its endearing, cartoon-like art style felt both old and new.     Donkey Kong; King of Swing DS retains the same primary controls: players control DK with the L and R buttons, allowing him to grab, rotate and charge attack while climbing or in midair.  On the ground L and R allow him to walk or jump.  However, Paon has revamped the game's subtler details.  Bananas are no longer used to purchase health or make the Kong "go bananas."     In fact, the DS game includes neither.  Instead, Diddy (found in a DK Barrel, of course) joins DK for a new arsenal of moves, trailing behind his best buddy.  Pushing L + R while DK is in the midst of his attack will send Diddy flying as a projectile to damage or destroy distant objects such as barrels, bricks and baddies.  For example, if Diddy grabs onto a golden ring on a rope, DK can stretch Diddy and the rope by climbing backwards.  Taking a page from the DKC series, Diddy also doubles as extra health. If DK is hit when Diddy tags along, Diddy gets hurt instead and disappears.  If DK is hurt the player loses a life.  DK barrels regenerate quickly, but one is not always nearby.

There are other changes and additions, too.  DK can swing off giant flowers, which behave like catapults, and secret cubbies of gems and bananas seem more frequent in this sequel. The game demo world’s boss, a banana-shaped airship, was easier than the first game’s bosses.  Disappointingly, the DS game dumps its cartoon visual style for the series’ standard pre-rendered look, although it uses 3D graphics for the world map and has impressive models for DK and Cranky during their conversations.  The game retains the same upbeat musical style found in the original, though nothing I heard stood out.

DK King of Swing DS looks to be a straightforward sequel offering more for fans of the original.

TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: Sonic Wild Fire
    « on: May 10, 2006, 07:23:46 PM »
    Run, Sonic, run!

For years some have complained that 3D Sonic games consist largely of pushing forward on an analog stick.  It seems Sonic Team has noticed this trend as well, resulting in Sonic Wild Fire.

The first Sonic Wii game is an on-rails platformer which only features the blue hedgehog, who runs forward unless told otherwise.  Players hold the remote controller sideways, like an NES controller, and steer Sonic left and right by tilting the controller.  2 is the only active button, used to make Sonic jump.  Much like Tony Hawk, Sonic will brake as 2 is held, charging for a higher jump.  When in midair the player can perform a very satisfying homing attack by snapping the controller downward.  Sonic also can perform a fiery burst of speed by collecting balls of fire to fill a meter, and then violently shaking the controller to initiate.

The E3 demo only featured one level with an Arabian setting.  (The game's story is inspired by Arabian Nights.)  The level design was fairly straightforward, with rings to collect, falling and spike-encrusted pillars to evade, dash ramps and winding roads.  A barrier prevented Sonic from moving too far to either side.  To keep things varied, the level also featured a slower section with Sonic sidestepping along a narrow ridge on a castle wall decorated with protruding spikes.  The game had a good sense of speed and a steady frame rate, and aesthetically resembled Sonic Heroes with extra touches such as water effects. The controls were simple, but with no camera woes and a fast pace I was not bothered by the narrow paths.  I did have trouble keeping the controller completely level, which caused me to drift to my death multiple times on a narrower section with bottomless pits to the sides.

Most frustrating was the lack of user input in the route through the demo level: while there are multiple paths, the path chosen is indirectly determined and I could not even identify when the road forked. While I found the wild fire move helpful for evading enemies or tricky passageways, it did not help me evade bottomless pits during narrow sections.

Sonic Wild Fire was early but promising.  Its focus on moving forward is a welcome departure from tedious battles and uninspired switch puzzles, but the demo level shown felt more like an enhanced special stage than a full game.  With clever stages and pacing, this could be a good, unique 3D Sonic game.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - April 13, 2006 - Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced that the Open Season video game, based on Sony Pictures Animation's first feature-length CG animated film, will be shipping mid- September 2006 on all available video game platforms, two weeks prior to the movie's September 29 release. Developed by Ubisoft's award-winning Montreal studio, Open Season will allow gamers to relive the humor and adventure of the movie by creating a fun and immersive interactive world that conveys the same comedic storyline, zany characters and artistic images projected in the animated film.

"We have been working hand-in-hand with Ubisoft's team to create a game that captures all the fun of Open Season," said Mark Caplan, executive director, interactive at Sony Pictures Consumer Products. "Sony Pictures' leadership in digital entertainment coupled with Ubisoft's award-winning development team is a great partnership that brings innovation to both the film and video game businesses."

"Ubisoft is committed to making the best movie-based video games in the industry. We do this by partnering closely with our licensing partners and movie makers to create an experience that remains true to the spirit of the film but expands it far beyond the theater."

Open Season is a riotous romp in the great outdoors, where the rowdy brood of forest animals turns the tables on a bunch of unsuspecting hunters. I've just played through Star Fox 64 twice (different paths) and MAN do I want one for Revolution now.  And not some game where you prance about, a real, Nintendo-developed Star Fox game with "shooting, shooting and more shooting," to quote SF (SNES) director Katsuya Eguchi.  The N64 was such an epic, balanced game that did so many things right.... And what with Factor 5 no longer in Nintendo's camp and a new controller perfect for shooting games, isn't it about time they took Star Fox seriously again?
