Microsoft's own offering is pretty good (coupled with Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware) http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

That is some sound advice, the difference between these and Norton is just phenomenal.

Go to the far right of the frontmost layer of the forest, you meet your zombie friend and get the dog from her

Nah, she's too nice for that.

Things changed after that snowboarding accident, she can't even look a snowman in the face without succumbing to the bloodlust.

I am not one for positive hyperbole, but I can't think of a DS platformer that I have enjoyed more than the one hour of Shantae I have played. Maybe I need to get out more, play some Hatsworth.

I guess I could use a Gameloft clone as a last resort.

EDIT: The problem with Gameloft clones is that they are usually competent, but definitely worse versions of what they are cloning. Usually, most stuff is so effectively aped that there isn't much to remark on, and you just end up wanting to play the real thing.

So, after having purchased Shantae I have 800 DSiWare points left over and I am in the mood for another crappy game. Basically
I need some suggestions for the worst possible ways to spend these 800 points, excluding notebooks, card games and apps.

If the game has yet to be reviewed on NWR, all the better, because then I can ruin "Whatcha been reviewing" with it.  (which is why I am bringing it up in the Newscast thread)

Right now I am leaning towards the Petz Hamsterz game, or perhaps a farm game. The problem with Petz is that it costs the full 800 points. Some help?

She left Nintendo for that? I hope she's successful anyway.

The article left out the part where she will be issued a hunting rifle and full legal immunity in the case of a child-uprising.

Shantae is completely riddled with cartoon/sprite bewbage. Not saying I don't appreciate that part of the female anatomy, but good lord do you really need bouncing cartoon boobs on what look to be children in your platformers?

The PSP is beaten into the ground at this point, but they are still going. If this were to happen, Nintendo could close the book on the PSP for good. Sony would have to leave the handheld market or reveal the PSP 2 because of this embarrassing defeat.

I like my PSP, and I think that plenty of Japanese gamers would want to contradict your thoughts on its, "embarrassing defeat."

I would laugh myself to death if Nintendo included PSP games on the portable VC and included more games than what is currently available to PSP go owners.

Of course I know this would never happen, but perhaps some day in the distant future a Nintendo handheld will play Sony games.

PS: All of the PS3 talk on RFN in past episodes is part of what has inspired me to get a PS3 tomorrow- so excited!

TalkBack / Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole Review
« on: October 03, 2010, 10:02:44 PM »

Once you've scratched the face off one bat, you've scratched them all.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/24204

Imagine this: a series of children's books centered about the adventures of a clan of mystical owls is translated to a motion picture. The motion picture is in turn translated to a video game for the Xbox 360 and PS3. This video game is then altered to accommodate the Wii platform with motion controls and lesser visuals. Have I gotten your hopes up yet? Perhaps it is best that I don't, because experiencing Legend of the Guardians with low expectations led to quite the pleasant surprise.

The folks that are immediately attracted to this game are, of course, those that are familiar with the Guardians of Ga'Hoole storyline. Not being familiar with this series of novels, I can only note, based on some online synopses, that the plot of the game is a sort of mash-up from the first few books. Fans of the original plot may be upset with the liberties that were taken with the story.  I found the entire plot and cast to be lesser versions of the fantasy novels the author was clearly inspired by, such as Lord of the Rings, Redwall, or Harry Potter.

Whether or not the story in Legends of the Guardians is canonical, or even good, it is certainly presented poorly. Cutscenes are often ripped straight from the HD versions of the title, and the game is rife with terrible voice acting. The voice acting even permeates into gameplay sections, where you will have owls yelling the same repeated lines at you in various terrible accents. At times, you can hear the actors slip up and revert to their normal way of speech instead of the accent they are supposed to be using.

Fortunately, Legend of the Guardians allows players to skip through most of the story and get to the meat of the game: flight. The simple act of flying around by tilting the Wii Remote works remarkably well, and the developers even implemented a lock-on system to help make the 3D world more navigable during a fight. I found that I was more comfortable with the motion controls in the Wii version than I was with the traditional controls on the Xbox 360.

While flying about the game's beautiful environments, it is not uncommon to have to engage in air-to-air combat. This is handled by a timing and combo-based melee system. As the game escalates, and enemies become stronger and more diverse, the combat becomes increasingly fun. Some missions have you juggling two simultaneous objectives, forcing you to use your combat experience to time your engagements perfectly.

Combat becomes increasingly complex with the addition of earnable armor and weapon upgrades, which can dramatically change your style of fighting. The gameplay reminds me of games such as Crimson Skies and Rogue Squadron, and for the most part, the game's mechanics can go toe to toe with these two great flight combat games.

Entertaining combat is almost enough to distract players from the uninspired mission structure. Many missions will focus on an initially fun and lengthy task, and then ask players to repeat this task twice more. One gets the feeling that the developers were simply trying to stretch the game out, because the whole package consists of a fairly short campaign with no multiplayer options. There are upgrades and bonuses for repeating missions, but the content just doesn't warrant the replays.

Legend of the Guardians took me by surprise, because it isn't  often that Wii ports of movie games can present an altogether entertaining experience. I imagine that fans of the books will get even more out of the game than me, and I suspect that even kids that have yet to read the books will still have a fun time with the story. Older fantasy fans will struggle putting up with the game's cliché riddled plot, but find solace in the game's unique combat system.

The runtime claims to be 1:51:35.

Hm. Then it shouldn't be expecting to stop at :05 or anything- which could have been the problem. If it was an unsupported codec, it probably wouldn't have started playing in the first place, and wouldn't have worked on my iPods either.

I am having a hard time thinking of what the problem could be.

I am doing these in Audacity, compressing it to aac @ 128 kbps- which is supported by iPods.

I have tested it on two different iPods (Touch & Classic) and haven't had the resetting problem.

I guess I will look into what the possible problem may be, but understand that I don't know enough about the internal workings of an iPod to scientifically figure out what the problem is. I do know that we previously edited these in Garage Band- but the fact that it works off the iTunes stream on both of my iPods and my iPad is throwing me off the scent.

EDIT: Could someone with the resetting problem check what the runtime is in the iTunes description? Also, if you could try fast forwarding past the normal failure point to see if it makes it through. Thanks

What game did you call a better Metroid game than Spiderman SD? "Solar Darkness"?

Soul of Darkness- it is a DSi Ware game by Gameloft.

EDIT: You never played a flying melee game? I did, it's called Dragon Master Spell Caster.

As tempting as that sounds....

The promotional videos they have released on sites like GameTrailers do make it look good, and if I could find a store that has that artbook with it it would be even better.

I was planning on giving my artbook away- maybe connected to a contest of sorts, because it has absolutely no value to me. Of course I say this with having no concept of the legalities of giving things away on NWR :)   In my pre-NWR days I just mailed schwag like this out to people.

So, who is going to get or has gotten this game?

-What kinds of parties are we all using?

Right now I am trying out: Front line- Monk, Hoplite, Prince  Back line- Hoplite, Arbalist

The dual hoplite deal has me a bit worried, but I love having the extra protection in the front line and also being able to deal long range damage from the back row. I also like not being too dependent on TP, so just having the front Hoplite use Provoke to suck up damage allows me to use vanilla attacks with the rest of my group and let the prince autoheal everyone at the end of each turn.

I am currently working on a review for it, and will be talking it up on this week's Newscast.

Isn't there a theoretical limit for how high your score can go before the game hits the kill screen?

Yes, oddly enough it uses the same algorithm that predicts the theoretical limit of music games on DSiWare. You just have to substitute instruments with barrels.
