Darn power being out when I woke up. I'll get on ejammer to help you.

No worries.  I couldn't find time to play yesterday anyway, but will be on for a quest or two today.  About to sign in this morning for a short grind, and will be back this afternoon when my baby girl takes a nap.

Thanks to Maxi for playing over lunch, and giving me a glimpse of what Monster Hunter Tri might look like after I invest.. oh, several hundred more hours to level up and get some cool loot.  He made everything look so easy (and since I'm only HR4 it was pretty easy) that he could've finished the quests with his eyes closed.

Next time he can try using lower level gear.  You know, something like Maximo's boxers for armor with a soggy french fry as his main weapon...  Yep, he'd still make me look bad.

I'll check for people online this weekend.  Just don't wait around if y'all are going for some big game or higher level quests.  I don't mind grinding out some low level quests on my own to build HR status.

Kytim when can you play today?

FWIW, I'm going on now for about 45-60 minutes.  Great way to kill lunch, right?  Expect to be online later tonight for a bit also if my baby girl doesn't stay up all night again.

Yeah, I can get some time for online play this weekend.  I'll post here before going online to see if anyone else is around.

Glad to hear that things are supposed to be more difficult online.  Failed a hunt for a Great Jaggi, which I initially blamed on still learning to use the Bowgun effectively, but then failed to collect enough Crystal Bones in the time limit (came up one short!) despite mining every mineral resource I could find while running around the map non-stop.  Shameful...

So I tried going online tonight.  Are the quests there intentionally much harder than similar quests in the single-player mode, or am I just terribly unlucky?

I mainly use keyboards to chat although if there is someone in the party that has Wii Speak I'll switch to that.

Yeah Japan is the only region that has to pay I believe. I think they can have 10 people to a city.

Ejammer here is the city we play together at.
Wisdom 3, Gate 27, City 5.

Oh since you went online can you post your code and username in the Monster Hunter Tri FC topic so we know who you are.

Added my code/username to the FC thread.

Won't be around tonight but will look for people in that city if playing later this week.  I have only used my WiiSpeak once and wasn't thrilled with the quality (might be a config issue though), so would be open to either voice or keyboard.

So I've finished off the 2-star quests and have started on the 3-stars.  Still learning to wield a bowgun, but rather enjoying the change it provides.

Stepped into the City (online play) last night to see what it looked like.  Wow... this certainly isn't the usual half-baked online experience you get on Wii.  No wonder some regions are paying for the online mode.

Although unsure of exactly where to go or what to do initially, I'm figuring things out pretty quickly.  I'd be up for some online gaming towards the end of this week if you don't mind an amateur in the party - otherwise I'll post again after getting more experience.  Do you guys use WiiSpeak or keyboards to chat?

They'll steal that but leave your more useful items alone(until you run out to steal anyway).

Good tip.  Will carry one or two if it's likely these guys are going to be a nuisance.

Hmm... after beating my first big monster, now I can't walk through two areas in the woods before bumping into another one.  At least it seemed easier to kill the second Great Jaggi than the first one - maybe because of experience, but more likely because I'd take enough time to gather healing resources and sharpen my blade before pursuing to the next area.

Maybe it's time to start looking at buying/upgrading weapons or armor.  Being able to kill stuff faster would be nice.

Well there is two ways to get your items back. Attack the cat and you will get back the item. If they get away the other is to visit their base. On the island it is in area 4 in the cave check the statue.

I had already learned how to get my things back, but with a half dozen aggressive creatures attacking it was tough to hit some of the Felynes before they escaped.  Once the Great Jaggi retreated, I didn't want to go dig out my stolen treasures in case that extra time allowed him to heal or recover.  (Maybe it would've been worth taking the break though.  A flash bomb and some tainted meat probably would've made things that much easier after tracking him down again.)

~Newbie Newsflash!~

First Great Jaggie downed after a ferocious battle!  Ok, the battle wasn't actually that difficult... but it was time consuming.  Some silly mistakes were made, and additional patience would probably help.  There will be a chance to improve during the follow-up attempt though.  Biggest gripe: having key items stolen by those damn Felynes during battle.

Does this mean I'm ready to take on Super Ala?   (kidding!)

Sure would be easier to make some progress on the game without work and a young family to take care of.  Oh well, sleep is overrated anyway.  With a little weekend effort, I should be ready to check out the online mode next week - I'd be perfect as "live bait".

What I meant was that while I wanted Lunar Knights to win, a more RPG-ish RPG may be a good thing too. Also TWEWY's main character is very unlikable right now. Hopefully that will change as I go through

Ah, gotcha.

Now to get cracking on TWEWY so that I can have some impressions beyond just hoping it lives up to the hype of being a really good, overlooked RPG.

...  What I don't like is that I have to keep my hand still.  It's very easy to start bouncing all over the place.  At least with dual-analog if I "rest" I just do nothing.  It's like I can't rest with pointer controls for I have to keep that pointer facing forward.
...

I don't really understand this line of reasoning.

Can't you just rest your arm/elbow on something?  A chair/couch handle has always worked wonderfully for me, and then you just need to make small wrist movements to adjust your aim.  Very stable with virtually no effort required!

Almost all games have some type of cursor visible, so it's not like you need to have your arm extended and actually aiming at the screen.  There are a few on-rails shooters that ask you to actually aim using a zapper-like peripheral and no on-screen indication of where you are shooting... but they aren't the norm, and playing that way is usually optional anyway.

Have you decided on a weapon to try out? If you want to try out the weapons without having to purchase them go to the arena.

I'm excited to try using the Bowgun, but it seems expensive and more difficult to be effective with initially.  I'll stick with the Sword and Shield combo to start, and then learn to use either the Great Sword or Lance once I feel more confident with my hunting skills.  After that I'm going Bowgun all the way though.
 ;D

It's really fun to see how each weapon handles differently and requires different strategies in battle.

4564
Tough question.

Most people are naturally biased towards control schemes that they are already familiar with, so opinions often vary depending on whether the gamer has:
- experience playing FPS games on console (ie: dual-analog)
- experience playing FPS games on computer (ie: mouse and keyboard)
- no previous FPS experience

I voted for always using pointer controls for several reasons.  First, it doesn't make sense (for me) to change preferred control methods for different types of gameplay.  Second, as someone who has limited experience playing console FPS tiles but moderate experience with PC shooters, pointer controls feel closer to the mouse-and-keyboard setup that I am most familiar with.  Finally, the increased speed and accuracy provided by well-designed and configured pointer controls simply seems more natural to me, creating an experience that can't be matched by dual analogs (although it can be approximated with experience).

That certainly doesn't mean that others will, or should, agree with my opinion... although hosting this poll on a Nintendo fansite probably means the sample taken will be biased.

Sorry - just saw the request after finishing for the day.  (That said, I probably won't have everything lined up to go online until next week anyway...)

Curse of the Golden Flower

This was my second time watching this movie, and it was better than I remembered.

The plot develops slowly and feels forced at times, but carries the movie well enough.  Acting is strong despite flat characters and some limited roles.  It's always a pleasure to watch Gong Li, even when she isn't doing her best work.  The cinematography was disappointing - with so many gorgeous costumes and temendous sets, you rarely felt that camera work did justice to the film.

The biggest disappointment stemming from Curse of the Golden Flower is that is simply doesn't reach the heights (visually or emotionally) that some of Yimou Zhang's other films achieve.

Recommended for fans of drama and foreign film.

McDonald's

...

Defunct/Limited - Pizza. McDonald's has a great habit of seeing what people aren't buying at their restaurant and then offering it for awhile to try and get people to fight the competition. They've done it with salads and submarine type sandwhiches. These often fade pretty fast. In theat vein, one thing they offered in the early 90's was pizza and it was actually pretty good. I remember they had a pizza Happy Meal and I loved it. While most of the other pizza offerings soon disappeared, the Happy Meal/Individual size lasted awhile longer until also fading into obscurity. I wish I had ate more of it while I could.

...

Oh man, I was thinking about McDonalds pizza just the other day.  Sure wish they still offered it!

Fast food isn't my thing.  When I do eat out, my preference looks like this:
(1)  Arby's as long as they are offering 4 junior roast beef sandwiches for $5!
(2) Dairy Queen is good for either two double cheeseburgers and a blizzard, or the garden salad with chicken and bacon
(3) Quiznos has several great subs
(4) A&W root beer is so good in a chilled mug that it makes the Double Mozza Burger worth ordering (even though it feels terribly heavy after finishing)
(5) Burger King makes awesome chocolate milkshakes... but nothing else really worth ordering.
(6) Wendy's makes a great spicy chicken sandwich

Pizza might not really count as "fast food", but Pizza Delight restaurants out east are incredible and beat the pants off Pizza Hut any day.  When we moved to Toronto, that was the only food that my wife felt really bad about leaving behind.

One last question:  What control methods do NWR gamers prefer?  I started out using the default Classic Controller option... but am considering switching it up and want to make the choice before getting much further into the game.

4569
Honestly I forgot about the game code thing, but she should give that up willingly assuming she most-likely doesn't have a My Nintendo Account.
If you open the box and give her the game, it MUST still be shrinkwrapped. Undisturbed in anyway, but you can take the rest of the stuff out of the box (it comes in a box right?) as long as it doesn't require you to open the actual game.

Yeah, the Club Nintendo code is what really set me off.  If the game is still in shrink when you give it, then it's hard to complain too much.  Kind of scuzzy to keep half the present for yourself, but maybe understandable.  But removing the shrink to use the code was just too much.

If you do that, might as well keep the game out and play it with your buddies before gifting it.  Maybe loan it to some poor children before Christmas and claim that as a charitable act - or even better, rent it to them!   ;D

Is it lame to admit that the question mark box is half the appeal of the platinum prize?  I mean, the little statue is actually pretty cool and looks nicer than I expected... but the question mark box is awesome too.  Seriously: if Club Nintendo sold a set of collapsible question mark and brick boxes like that I'd probably spend coins for them.

4571
Hmm...

My first reaction was that maybe it's not so bad.  As long as you still give a shrinkwrapped game to her, maybe it's excusable if you clearly know that your sister only wants the game and nothing else.  Maybe it's reasonable if you are including the game as part of a larger gift package and it's not the main attraction.

But reading more carefully made me change my opinion.

You are proposing that it's acceptable to open someone else's gift and remove all the parts you want before giving the "leftovers" to them?  You are assuming she doesn't want the whole package... but don't know that, and still have no qualms about decreasing the value of the package before giving it?  You're even planning on opening the actual game and taking out the Club Nintendo code?  This game isn't even that expensive to begin with.  And no, tossing in a spare classic controller - either used or from an unrelated game - simply because you don't need it doesn't begin to make up for the shadiness.

This all sounds terribly selfish, like something a spoiled child would do instead of a full-grown adult.  But maybe your traditions and feelings about Christmas gifts are different than mine.

Do what you want, but since you asked for opinions I don't mind sharing mine.  If you really want to keep the goodies for yourself, then it's a much better idea to buy the package and just trade or sell the game disc afterwards.  Surely Gamestop will offer good value because it's got Mario in the title.

Good luck with jury duty.  I'll be around next week after getting a better understanding of how to play.

Spent part of the evening trying to get started with the offline game.  It's really slow at the beginning, but that's probably for the best.  This game seems like it requires a strong understanding of the "basics" before you jump into bigger battles - which was part of the issue I had with the demo disc.  Seems really cool so far - even started combining different items and building/upgrading some new armor.

Frankly, I'm kind of disappointed I didn't pick this game up earlier after strong first impressions.  I had a month of downtime this summer, and Monster Hunter seems like it could've filled that void perfectly.

Great show, as usual.  Listening to your Goldeneye memories was particularly enjoyable.

While people may have fond memories of Goldeneye 007 on N64, is there much appeal in playing it now?

I played it a while ago and felt the game had aged better than expected... however, that doesn't mean I'd recommend to anyone who didn't grow up in the N64 (or earlier) generation.  Without nostalgia to hide the rough spots this game wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable.

My favorite memories of Goldeneye on N64 come from hours of multiplayer sessions and fighting to unlock all the cheats and secret levels.  Who can forget using proximity mines to cover all the spawn points, or having a slap fight to the death, or madly running in diagonal lines to gain a slight speed advantage?  Trying to find a way to shave 3-5 seconds off your best time was maddeningly addictive, and finally defeating (?) Baron Samedi and his haunting laughter was a great relief.

Although many of Goldeneye's greatest in-game accomplishments could be considered quaint now, it really did set a new standard for console FPS titles - both in single player and multiplayer modes.

I was hoping for Lunar Knights, but I've been hurting for a good RPG

...

So shouldn't you be happy about The World Ends With You?  I thought that was a good RPG?

Maybe I just read the post wrong.  Is Lunar Knights an RPG too, and you wanted it to win?  Either way it seems like TWEWY is a pretty sweet game to have win.  My vote was Hotel Dusk, but this would've been my second choice.
