Hey who is interested in hunting Giant Jho? I'm going to be getting on about 5pm PST. We have like one more spot left in the group. Have to be HR51 or higher.

Saw a video of this.  He's HUGE.  Pretty cool quest.

What's your plan of attack?  In the video I saw, it looked like some of the hunters couldn't do much more than hack at his ankles, making guns a nice alternative to some of the melee weapons.  Then again, traps would bring that beast down to your level pretty quickly regardless.

Offline, I'm just about to do the Lagi urgent (hunt) to finish off the 4-star quests.  Currently HR19 for online mode, so I guess that's a bit further along - at least letting me mess around in the volcano sometimes.

No luck for plates, and the tail carve only gave a scale.  I need to finish the same quest in Village mode at some point over the next day or two, so will have another chance to get those parts there.

I *shouldn't* go on now... but maybe just one won't hurt.   ;)

Hey ejammer I came up with a gun that should work for Rank 3 quests for online. Royal Launcher frame,Tropeco gun Barrel, and Thunderacrus stock. All level appropriate and the majority of the shots reload and fire quickly. The only shots that have recoil is Cluster 1 and wyvern fire 1 with low recoil. The only ammo it doesn't fire is freeze, crag, dragon, exaust, and slicing.

I'll need to push through Lagi a couple times to get the required goods, but will give it a shot.  (Pun intended?)  Thanks!

By the way, thanks for the cool link.  I had also found this one for playing around with different armor values:

You could take down alone monsters that four rooks struggle with.  And you would make it look easy.   ;D

Speaking of which, I need to man up and start causing more damage during battles.  Probably a combination of changing my weapon to shoot different ammo and improved distance/targeting with the ammo I already carry.

General Chat / Re: What Pod's do you Cast?

NWR dominates my podcast list right now - with Radio Free Nintendo being the best Nintendo-focused podcast available, NWR Radio Trivia offering enjoyable game music (even better when the games are familiar), and NWR Newscast filling in the gaps with plenty of laughs.

Other gaming podcasts that I enjoy include NLFM (chiptunes and gaming-based music, courtesy of the NintendoLife website) and Dojo-Show-Go! for more Nintendo-based discussion.  I tried listening to the Giant Bombcast... but lost interest after a couple shows.  They simply didn't appeal to me, and didn't provide opinions or discussion that matched what I was interested in.

Non-gaming podcasts are mostly focused on sports: Tim & Sid Uncut, ESPN PTI, and The Basketball Jones... although I've been less impressed with the last one recently.

Showgirls - One of the most famous bombs of all time, but also the highest grossing NC-17 movie ever (which may be why it bombed, even with an adult kids can't get into NC-17 movies). Not a great movie, but passable.

I still don't "get" this movie.  It's bad but never quite bad enough to draw me in.  When a movie leaves you bored with watching topless women, you know something is wrong.

Thanks for the fun hunts, Maxi. Really thought I could make it through the Rathalos hunt at lunch without dropping - shame I couldn't get out of the way in time after being stunned.  It's strange to play with you after hanging out on the Rookie server, though.

Was hoping to get on again earlier this afternoon, but not sure when (if?) that will happen.  Should be HR18 tomorrow though.
Thanks again for the help this morning!  It's much appreciated, and fun to see how easy you guys make hunts seem.

One question:  Is there a way to figure out what monsters are weak against other than trial and error or being told by others?

General Chat / Re: Nintendo Trading Cards...
« on: December 03, 2010, 10:25:04 AM »
Very cool.

The only Nintendo cards I have are from the old Animal Crossing sets that were released back in the GameCube days.  It's a pretty small collection though, because those cards disappeared  right after I started collecting and are difficult to find now.  Too bad - really would've liked to get more, or at least find a place to trade away my extras.

Kind of glad I hadn't seen the newer Enterplay cards earlier.  As if I need another collecting addiction.
 :)

EDIT:  So... where exactly are these cards sold?

i liked departed better than infernal affairs, they were both good....

Have to disagree.  Infernal Affairs was quite a bit better than The Departed and is the better choice for anyone who doesn't mind subtitles.  The remake added chaff and rewrote scenes to appeal to a certain target market, but did nothing to actually improve the movie.  Sometimes bigger budgets and famous actors actually detract from the final effect.

That said, Infernal Affairs had some issues too... a movie worth watching, but not perfect by any means.

Currently watching 3rd Season of Mad Men (just finished episode 9) on Netflix.

Good show.  It's got issues, and the storylines aren't always believable... but the characters are interesting enough to make up for the shortcomings.  I often find myself drawn in farther and the plot deserves.  Highly recommended, and good enough to justify the Netflix service even if we didn't watch other stuff too.

Regarding the final season (and more specifically, the final episode) of Battlestar Galactica, I also disliked it.  The "answers" they gave weren't satisfying and felt like a hollow resolution because the writers didn't plan well enough to provide a more compelling end to a tremendous show.  True: things are resolved well enough to end the series... but it just didn't give any sense of payoff after investing so much time in the series.

So I was there, in the city, looking forward to doing some quests.

Then my wife decided that Friday night was "Steamy Romance" night.  No - not romance with me.  She just wanted to use Netflix to watch a steamy movie.  Sadly, this usually doesn't mean anything steamy occurs after the movie as by then she'll be so tired she'll just roll into bed.  In the meantime, I lose out twice over by getting kicked out of the TV room and losing my game time.

In conclusion, having Netflix on Wii isn't always as wonderful as I initially thought.  (Ok, it's still pretty sweet.)

Sounds good.  I'll do my best to get on for 10, maybe some others (higher HR) will join in after so you can get some better hunts as well.

I'll probably be around for a few hunts. Have a time in mind?

"When the baby is in bed."  Unfortunately that's not very specific...

Probably around 10pm Eastern.  Everyone here seems to be Pacific, so going on later would work too.

Anyone playing tonight?  I know it's Thanksgiving weekend for most, so won't be surprised if the board is quiet.

Going on in a few minutes for a quick kill over lunch break, and will check back sometime this evening.

General Gaming / Re: So nobody likes GameStop?
« on: November 23, 2010, 01:19:41 PM »
If GameStop stores here required fingerprints, that would be the final straw for me trading in games. Not that I mind having my fingerprints taken - heck, I leave them all over the place - but simply because I'm not keen on having inked fingers during a shopping trip.  Too much hassle without good return value = no trade.

That said, GameStop isn't always that bad anyway.  There are multiple stores close to where I live.  A couple are really good, a couple are really bad.  It just depends on who works there and manages that store.  There is one in particularly that I actively support because the staff are so friendly and helpful.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I really wanted to try And Yet It Moves because the concept was cool... but didn't want to pay because the game looked kind of boring.  Your comment reaffirms that impression.   I'll download the demo for later, but won't be in a rush to play.

Ejamer was already on? I thought he wasn't coming on until later. Oh well, perhaps I'll catch him some other time.

Sorry - thought I'd be able to stay on longer last night, but my little girl didn't sleep very well.  So I got on right after your post yesterday and then had to bail after getting help on a quest.  High chance I won't be able make it online tonight either... although I'll definitely try.

Hopefully will catch you around sometime soon though.

Anyone planning on being online tonight?  I'm going to either finish some Village quests or try to jump another HR level tonight, probably with a group of similar level scrubs... but would look for any other NWR regulars before starting the grind.

(Most likely starting around 10pm Eastern, although it depends on when the baby is sleeping.)

North America gets 4 WiiWare Demos:
And Yet It Moves from Broken Rules
Bit.Trip Fate from Aksys Games
Jett Rocket from Shin'en Multimedia
ThruSpace from Nintendo

Can anyone comment about whether it's worth playing through these demos?

I'm finding Monster Hunter hard to put down, and need to know whether these demos should command some attention or just be downloaded and "gotten to eventually"...

Shortbus - This movie created a lot of controversy around here when it came out because of graphic sex scenes.  Maybe that controversy was just because it isn't all (or even mostly) about straight sex?

While sex is what thrusts the story forward, those scenes weren't as erotic as you might expect and probably aren't what most people are interested in watching.  Luckily, the graphic nature didn't outweigh what the movie is really about: relationships, desire, frustration, and disappointment...  Really surprised how well the movie turned out with lots of laughs and a few genuinely touching moments.

If you like indie flicks and aren't put off by mature content, then give it a watch.  (On the other hand: if you are thinking about watching this movie just for the sex scenes or as a cheap turn on, don't waste your time.)

Tokyo Gore Police - Wow, another movie that easily exceeded my expectations.  Tokyo Gore Police (TGP) revels in the odd and the obscene, but never loses it's sense of humor or irreverence.  The faux ads and propagana shorts spliced into the film are funny, the storyline just convoluted enough to meet the Z-grade standards I was hoping for, and the gore effects are solidly over-the-top.  Most people won't like this movie... but a certain twisted subset will love it.  You know who you are.

As a sidenote, this movie is infinitely better than The Machine Girl.  Now that was a disappointment!
