Not sure if you've seen this already, but NWR actually has a comparison video on their YouTube. For whatever reason I don't think this was even on the front page of the website?

Didn't see this - going to watch it now!
Thanks!

Edit: Hmm... based on the video, sounds like a good port where they didn't half-ass the effort at all. Wii U isn't as powerful as PS4 or XBox One, so slightly downgraded visuals are expected. The mistaken box art claims are easy for me to overlook, because I'm still (pleasantly) shocked they released the game at all.

Didn't mean to stir up the Uncharted hate. I just can't imagine playing any game back-to-back-to-back-to-back...
(Although I don't know how different that really is than dropping 100+ hours into Xenoblade or Breath of the Wild or Monster Hunter. Some of those games have much less plot and development over that period of time also.)

Picked up copies of Stranger of Sword City (Vita) and Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (Vita).

The first was quite inexpensive, and I'm a sucker for collecting Vita RPGs.

The latter wan't inexpensive, but is getting harder to find in stores and I don't trust the second-hand market to provide me with cheaper options. Absolutely love the art design in this game, and look forward to playing it.

Wishing I could find some reviews about Darksiders (Wii U) online talking about performance comparisons. Not that it matters much - this is what's available unless I upgrade my PC enough to play the game (unlikely to happen in the near-term). My copy has actually arrived, and I'm hoping to have time to check it out firsthand later in the week.

...

Wow, that's a lot of Uncharted! I don't know if I could play that much back-to-back (-to-back-to-back) without a break.

I still don't "get" Minecraft - which feels disappointing. I appreciate the way that survival mode offers some threads of Rogue-like gameplay (randomly generated world with some standard goals; highly interactive objects creating a lot of emergent play) but just don't find it very enjoyable. Not the right game for me, I suppose.

What have I been playing?

Mostly still Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U). Despite seeing the end credits roll, there remains plenty of interesting areas to uncover in the game world. We are working towards freeing a third divine beast, but often get side-tracked along the way.

When not playing that game, I've been enjoying From the Abyss (DS). It's not a great game, but is easy and a pleasant way to kill a few minutes at a time. Although the game feels a bit grind-heavy at times, leveling up and upgrading your character skills are always enjoyable. The game only cost a few bucks so is out-performing expectations quite easily.

Woohoo!  My long pre-ordered copy of Darksiders Warmastered Edition (Wii U) shipped today.
Where did you order from? My Amazon order still hasn't shipped and now I'm wondering if they didn't even produce enough copies to fill all pre-orders.

I had ordered from Amazon.ca, probably having placed the order 8 months ago or so?
Sincerely hope there are enough copies to go around.

Woohoo!  My long pre-ordered copy of Darksiders Warmastered Edition (Wii U) shipped today.

I'm a bit worried about the quality of the port given how long it took to come out, and how dead Wii U seems now... but I'm fascinated by the fact they are actually going through with the release so late, and do rather want to play the game on the same system where I own Darksiders 2.

This surely won't be a big print run; collectors should take note and grab a copy while they are available.

Oh wow, Alynaty, the cards you sent arrived today - but you sent way too many!  Thanks so much for your kindness.  Edit: Oh my... that's almost the entire set! Thank you thank you thank you!
 ;D

What else are you still looking for?  There have been some active traders here recently, and it's possible that I could track down a few extra cards for you.

BUt by FAR the best feeling in the game is getting the Master Sword and just eviscerating the Guardians! Tear their legs off, rip them apart! After 50+ hours of running away in absolute terror, to have that payback was just the best thing!

Having not yet found the Master Sword, any fear of Guardians disappears once you get the tech lab open and can craft Ancient Arrows that allow you to one-shot-kill them. Instead of objects of terror, they become desirable targets because I wanted the parts to craft extra goods (and as a way to get some payback from the times they terrorized me).

1160
Cool I think this could be really fun.

It could also be a bomb, but sometimes you need to roll dem bones and hope for the best.

Regarding placing bets, where is the option that we all walk away disappointed because Nintendo doesn't announce anything of consequence? Not saying I'm a hater... but someone's gotta be that guy.

I have banished the evil spambot and it's thread subject changing ways to the great Recycle Bin of the Dark Web.

Ah, safe and sound in Khushrenada's warm embrace (of spambot moderation).
Thanks goodness - that was a close call.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
(Wii U)

Beat the final boss, but barely feel like we've scratched the surface of what the game has to offer. Completely enjoyed the game, and expect we'll play quite a bit more than we already have.

Some notes about what we accomplished and what we missed: 2 divine beasts restored, 85 shrines found/completed, 193 korok seeds found, 8 photo memories recovered, never fought a Lynel and lived to speak about it, didn't find the master sword or shrine of courage.

Edit: Played a bit further in the afternoon and found some shrines, korok seeds, a memory, and other general stuff. Expect this to get many more hours of play.

That makes sense I guess, appreciate it more if you were anticipating a purchase that you've been working towards? Just out of curiosity, were the Ambassador titles the same for everyone? Was it a pick X amount from these options kind of offer?

I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to handheld gaming since the GBA.

Some of it is the difference between a game that I actively want to play vs a game that is just there.
Ambassador titles were the same for everyone. A good selection, but nothing earth shattering.  I'd have to google to even remember what they all were.

1164
Wow, did not expect it to drop that fast. Happy for those who can take advantage of this deal.

Especially since the Wii U version resisted price drops for a long time.

I've played a bunch of more recent LEGO games that were highly rated, and none were as entertaining (to me) as LEGO City Undercover. Big fan.

1165
... Pretty sure I'll move on to Sacred Stones next, ...

I enjoyed the first GBA one quite a bit more than Sacred Stones. Not really sure why...
Maybe it has to do with Sacred Stones being one of the 3DS Ambassador titles, and never quite appreciating games that I get fro free?

Super glad to find a used DS Lite (purple+black, like new condition) together with Pokemon Pearl for $25 CAD.

My daughter wanted a Pokemon game she could play on her DSi, and I wanted a replacement system to play through my library of DS/3DS games. Her request is filled and mine is half-way met - considering it's backwards compatible for my GBA games and was very cheap, that seems like a steal to me.

... Also after 190+ hours I run into a freaking BEAR? We had this little "The Revenant" moment. There are still moments to be had in this game it would seem.
...

Regarding bears, wait until the first time you mount and tame a bear, accidentally, and then proudly ride it around Hyrule.  This game does not lack in moments.

@alynaty: Just checking to see if the cards that I had sent arrived yet. The expected delivery date should be sometime this week, and I always get excited when things are close to arriving.

TalkBack / Re: Why I Love Roguelikes
« on: May 13, 2017, 07:53:09 AM »
I've been a big fan of roguelikes ever since discovering Nethack in the early 00s. Sure, it's not the prettiest game, but every time you play things are slightly different. Sure, your knowledge and experience carries over and helps make the next session a bit easier, but you never quite knew what surprising event might lead to an unfortunate demise (or unlikely victory).

For me, there are two key points that make roguelikes appealing:
(1) deep and varied interactions with the game world - this is often a strike against console-based roguelikes because of simplified control schemes; they can still be fun, but you just don't have as many possible actions available to you
(2) lower time commitment - you can often play through a full, distinct game in a single session; sure it might take many such sessions to have the skill/luck/knowledge to be successful, but each session is a stand-alone event

They aren't for everyone, but are a lot of fun. I was thrilled to see roguelikes gain some popularity on Wii, and then through PC indie games, and now elements of the genre are often seen across the gaming landscape as a whole.

Recently decided that I'd explore the castle, having finally found an effective way to deal with guardians in my way.
Accidentally started the final battle with Ganon, despite only having restored one divine beast, but didn't finish the battle. Got to a part where I wasn't sure how to progress, and wasn't sure I wanted to finish the game anyway.

There is a lot more I want to do before seeing the end - I'm unsure what will happen and how much further I'll play the game after that battle.

Level design is going to be the clincher for this one. I hope Arzest can plug their inadequacies long enough to push out a solid experience this time around.

All gaming time is being spent on Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U) right now.

Twice caught myself playing until early the next morning by accident as I'm having a hard time putting the game down. Not pursuing main story developments very much yet, mostly just exploring the game world and doing secondary stuff - although starting to run low on non-quest things that I care about.

Very much getting a Xenoblade feel from the game where you go somewhere just to be there - climbing mountains, crossing lakes, exploring ruins, etc. The only concern I have at this point is the balance between story/exploration: I loved Xenoblade in part because it told a stronger story and forced a mix of narrative and exploration instead of focusing on one or the other. Zelda might be a little bit too open for my preferences - although it's still a breath of fresh air right now and deeply enjoyable.

Kids still engrossed by the game, but we've comfortably broken away from the "don't do anything without us, Dad" condition.

... Well, fear not. I won. Khushrenada wouldn't let these forums down. NWR represent!

Woot woot!

Sadly, I let my teams down on Saturday.

Playing The Resistance: Avalon with a table of 10 people, my team of evil characters extended the game to the final vote of the final mission, but were unable to sow enough distrust to win the game. (For people who aren't familiar with the game, it's like a quicker version of Werewolf without player elimination.)

I had one last choice thanks to holding the Assassin role - but instead of killing Merlin I picked a teammate by mistake! He had accidentally failed to reveal himself during the introduction, which lead to a lot of uncertainty for our team throughout the entire game. The actual Merlin player would have been my second choice.

It was a good game though, with a lot of discussion and debate (and doubt) at every turn. Had we traitors known our full team, we might've pulled out a win.  Playing The Resistance (or the Avalon version) is always a fun time.
 ;D

The two people left, so we tried Captain Sonar. Manning the sonar, I let me team down by frequently being off by one space - something I just can't account for. It was still close and tense, but we were consistently *not quite* on target while our opponents rarely missed.

I blame cold medication and lack of sleep, although that's really just a bad excuse. The trust is that my attention span was just waning at that point - in part because Captain Sonar gameplay isn't my cup of tea.

...Diplomacy...

If anyone in these forums are interested in learning or playing Diplomacy, speak up!

There are some great websites that will automatically resolve orders for you, so a moderator isn't required, but it's very kind to offer to be neutral and help people prepare their orders. The rules for Diplomacy aren't hard, but getting your orders just right can be kind of tricky when you start playing.

(By the way, I've only played a couple of times so don't have much expertise. I'm just very high on the game because I think it's a fantastic experience. Consider me happy to join a learning/teaching game in any capacity, or a more normal game as "likely fodder".)

... I'll have to look into Star Wars Risk then. ...

Should be easy to find and pretty cheap too - but if you have any issues getting a copy then just let me know.
I bought an extra copy (remembering how expensive other good Star Wars board games became after going out of print) so could send you a "gently used" set.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Announces New 2DS XL
« on: April 28, 2017, 03:58:34 PM »
I would argue Nintendo will get more money from people buying this and the copious amounts of 3DS software available than a one-time purchase of the NES Classic.
I would argue there are more people left who want an NES Classic Edition than people who don't already own a 3DS and would specifically purchase New 2DS XL and copious amounts of new software.

There are also multiple similarly-priced competitors for playing 3DS games available on the market right now, where NES Classic has no (legal and legitimate) competition.

I like the 2DS XL design, but find the pricing borderline ludicrous. There is no moderately priced entry into the product line outside of the (clearly marketed at children) original 2DS console, and as someone who need to replace his handheld before playing again I find that hugely disappointing.

In Canada you can pay $110 for a 2DS with game included, $200 for a New 2DS XL, or $240 for New 3DS XL. Those are all of the options. The latter two don't come with chargers or games. Paying over $200 for a system that has been around since 2011 (yes, it's been improved since then... but how many games use those improvements?) is ludicrous.

Remember the Black Friday sale where they brought out a cheaper 3DS unit? I was so excited... of course, there was virtually no stock provided and I've never seen an in-stock non-XL unit since that date.
