Anylord, what do you guys think about the spin jump? I feel it's kind of symbolic of the overstuffed nature of SMW, compared to the lean, mean SMB3. I don't remember it ever being very necessary, except for spinning off of Yoshi.

I think the spin move was most likely born from the devs coming up with actions for the extra buttons.  Same with the L and R level scroll feature.  Which is fine by me since the spin move was integrated pretty thoroughly in the game.  Yeah it was used to jump off Yoshi.  But it was also a second type of jump attack, kind of a pre-butt stomp.  It also made Mario invulnerable against certain enemies and hazards.  So I used it a lot.

I actually don't like the Super Star Wars games at all.  They control terribly and just aren't fun at all.

When I first saw Mario World win RetroActive I was a little disappointed.  I've played this game a thousand times and I couldn't really think of what I could say about it.

But I've been replaying the game on my SNES.  And the thing that stands out for me is the puzzle aspect to the levels.  All of the multiple exits to the levels usually require extra thought to figure them out.  And I love that aspect to the game.

Another thing is the abundance of extra lives.  I had 30 by the time I beat the first boss, around 70 by the second and basically maxed out by the third.  But if you save and quit you'll start with five again.

Also the boss level music is fantastic.

I didn't listen to the older episodes so I was a little unsure whether to listen to this or not.  But it was actually entertaining hearing their insights.

Hope you enjoyed the glimpse, but I think it's much better when people vote blindly.

Yet everyone else seems to disagree.  ;D

I prefer the blind vote.  People vote for games they want to win, not games they think will win.

My thoughts on the Bangai-O series.  I played the Dreamcast version first.  Loved it so much I decided to buy the n64 one.  And the same for Spirits.

DC:
If you're interested in the original Bangai-O, it's much easier/cheaper to get the Dreamcast version.  The versions are slightly different, but overall I'd recommend the DC version for price and ease of play.  You could probably get a DC and the DC version of Bangai-O for the price of the n64 cart alone.

The game itself is amazing.  I was a bit put off by screen shots and the size of the characters in this game, but once you find the quirk that makes this an excellent game, you'll see why they are so small.  You play though levels one at a time and there is a crazy story line loosely strung throughout.

N64:
The n64 version is still a great game, but it's completely in Japanese.  So learning what exactly to do is a bit difficult.  The n64 does have interesting controls though.  You can use the dpad to steer and the analog stick to shoot.  It's weird at first, but once you get used to it, it works very well.  After awhile of playing with these controls, I liked them a lot more than what was available on the DC.  There are different controls options for both versions, so you can choose what you prefer.  But it's basically a two stick shooter that has never been released on a system with a two stick controller.

DS:
This game seems more like an add-on pack to the original Bangai-O than a full sequel.  There's not really any story, you just attack the 100+ levels in any order you want.  There are puzzle stages which require specific actions to complete.  Then there are other levels that seem to be the best the developer came up with while messing with the included level editor.  It's a really good game, but I wanted more 'game-y' stuff like level progression, story, and difficulty progression.

I voted for Actraiser because it's one of those games that everyone talks about that I've never played.

I own Mario World and Mario RPG, so I'd play along with those.  I haven't played Mario RPG in a long time, so that would be interesting.  I've never enjoyed any of the other Mario RPGs ("papers" or "& lugis") as much as the snes one.

For the Genesis nominations I'm actually going to nominate two games.  Shining Force II because it's one of my favorite games ever and I can't not mention it.  And Pulseman because it's really interesting.  A. It wasn't really available in the States.  B.  It's made by the company that went on to do the Pokemon games.  C.  It's made by the company that went on to do the amazing Drill Dozer.  D.  Because the game is great.

I finally got passed my stumbling block and beat the game.

Going off what I said before, I'm a little more used to the controls.  You still move kinda slow and you can't move while attacking so you still jump around a lot.  But I learned to tap the floaty jump to allow for a kind of regular jump.  That made the game a lot easier to play.

Going back to play through again is fun, but not sensational.  The game is a better shooter than it is a platformer.  So there's more of an emphasis on getting upgrades and keeping them as opposed to navigating the environment.  The shuriken are very strong and fun when fully upgraded.  But I tend to fall back on the bombs when it gets difficult.

As far as the bosses go, it seems Irem had a different approach than a lot of companies.  The first half of the bosses in Metal Storm all had exploits so you could beat them without a chance of getting hit.  But unlike Ninja Spirit, the later bosses were very well done.  Of course Metal Storm was made after Ninja Spirit, so that might explain the improvements.

I can see why TG-16 owners loved this game back in the day.  But I don't think it has aged particularly well.

I came into this game kinda expecting a lot.  I'm a big fan of what IREM did back in the day.  I love the R-Type series and Metal Storm on the NES is my favorite game from that system.  I'm also a huge sucker for 'hidden gem' type games.

But unlike R-Type and Metal Storm, I really felt the controls in Ninja Spirit left a lot to be desired.  You seem to move so slow, so you want to constantly jump to move faster.  But the jump is very floaty and can make you very vulnerable.  As far as the weapons go I tend to use either the bombs or hook.  The hook is great for a wide range attack, and it also deflects projectiles easily.  And as already noted, the bombs are pretty devastating.  I've also used the sword on a few occasions such as against bosses.  The Shuriken seem to be for experienced players who just want to show off.

The arcade roots of the game are pretty apparent with the difficulty of some sections.  Sure the 'PC Engine Mode' gives you a life bar.  But coming into physical contact with an enemy in an instant kill.  And certain enemies' weapons is also an instant kill.  I'll just say that my neighbors in my apartment building probably think I have turrets after playing through certain parts.  With the respawning enemies, I ended up just trying to rush through the stages as quickly as possible.  Which made the levels easier, but I didn't really feel like I was enjoying them.

But there are parts of the game that are total kick ass.  I had a lot of fun with the level where there are kite guys are coming at you from the sky.  It's right after the mountain-ish level where to need to move to the top of the level (which was very frustrating due to the floaty controls).  Something clicked about that level where I was jumping around shooting enemies left and right, and it felt very good.  Maybe going back to the earlier levels will be more fun, having now gained knowledge of how to play the game better.

I'll nominate Actraiser.  It's one of those fairly well known games I've just never played.  Maybe it's a game many people have played to death, but I've always been interested in it.

I voted for Ninja Spirit.  It's been a game that has very much drawn my attention since I saw a review of it on Retroware TV.  The game having elements of Metal Storm definitely helped my interest.

Finished the game, woot!  Zelda will not sleep forever!

Worst experience so far: I was one point away from leveling up and on my last life.  I see two slime things.  I sell out to take down one slime knowing that the second would kill me, but only after getting my level up.  Only problem...  first slime drops a bottle.

Best experience so far: Giant Slime in the final temple?!?!?

I'd maybe use it for Sin and Punishment, but the Wiimote and Classic Controller work fine for all other systems.

I'm on the final temple now.  And thank god when you die you continue from the beginning of the temple.  It took me a life and a half just getting there.  I've only played a bit of the level, but I was totally surprised to see a bunch of new enemies.  Giant slime thing?  WTF?

When I read some of the posts about leveling up I was a bit put off.  But I got to the last temple fully leveled without really grinding.  Sure I did a little grinding to avoid losing my exp before losing my final life, but it was nowhere near Dragon Warrior grinding.  Also I remember the bosses being hard, but I didn't have much trouble this time.

My top three WiiWare games.

1. Lost Winds - The only problem with the game is how short it is, other than that I loved it.
2. World of Goo
3. Mega Man 9 - I'm not a huge fan of the series, but the idea of a neo-retro title blew me away.

I own five other WiiWare games, but I don't think they're that amazing.  They are Lit, Toki Tori, Tetris Party, Dr. Mario and Gyrostarr.  Lit and Toki Tori are both kinda similar in that they're puzzle/adventure type games.  I got through about 2/3rds of each before they lost their fun for me.  I'd only recommend them to fans of the genre.  I got Tetris more for my girlfriend who does play it a good deal.  I thought she might also like Dr. Mario, but I guess not.  I never play either game since I basically got my fill in many of the previous iterations.  I definitely regret getting Gyrostarr.  It's not a terrible game, but it does get boring quickly.  It looked a lot like N2O (a game I loved on PSone), but it doesn't compare.

There are a handful of WiiWare games I do want to get (Orbient comes to mind), but I tend to spend that money on VC games or retail releases.

The only other game I've seen advertised in magazines (Nintendo Power) is Evasive Space.

194
Just a little note: even though it sucks restarting at the castle when you die.  It is kinda nice having a reminder of why you're doing what you're doing in the game.  Usually princesses are taken far far away and it's easy to forget why you're going level to level defeating foes.  And if you've never beaten the game like I have, you feel like Zelda has never woken up.  It's almost as bad as beating Rez and the game tells you 'she' is still locked inside.

195
I never owned the NES Zelda games as a kid.  When playing them at friends' houses Zelda II always was more approachable to me.  It's probably because it was more like the other games I played back then (Mario, Castlevania and other side scrolling games.)

When I finally put in some real time into Zelda II years later I still enjoyed it, but never completed it.  Despite liking the game more than many other Zelda games, it's the only one I still haven't beaten to this day.

Now getting the game on VC, I vow to finally beat the game.  So far I'm having a lot of fun and a good deal of frustration.  The way Link controls is very fun.  Running around jumping and attacking in this game has always been great.  But the weird experience/lives/continue system takes some getting used to.  Plus Link's sword has always felt very short.  But fighting the skeletons and knights is very satisfying.

It wasn't until I read this thread that I realized that you could choose how to level up.  I've never read the manual or a guide, so when your only two options are upgrade or cancel, I always chose upgrade.  That adds a good deal more to the game for me.

I think the general consensus is Bonk's Revenge is the best one.  Bonk's Adventure is also supposed to be good, too.  Bonk III is the weakest of the series, but still not bad.

From what I've read, I definitely wish I got Bonk's Revenge instead of Adventure.

I was going to nominate Ninja Spirit since I plan on getting that game anyway.  But if you want something different I'm going to go with Military Madness.  I've already been burned twice with randomly buying TG-16 games (Bonk's Adventure and Neutopia), but the Advance Wars comparisons keep me interested.  There are a lot of great schmups on the TG-16 that I want to get, but I already have a bit of a backlog of those types of games.

Great ep.  I looked it up and here's the Retronauts blog post about the Castlevania 3 music.

There is some complete reuse of ExciteTruck tracks in ExciteBots, but so much of the new stuff has been added that they hardly feel old.  Although I do agree the general aesthetic of the levels isn't that amazing.

I somewhat enjoyed de Blob, but the game actually gave me motion sickness.  I didn't like the jumping at all, but painting and stuff was fun.  I regret not renting the game first, but I've never had a game make me sick before.

And I think that the reason not too many people have played it is because it got lost in the launch of 18 titles.
I think you should play the game before deciding why few people have played it.

Who says I haven't played it?  I don't own the game, but I have played it a bit.  And considering it got decent reviews from multiple sites, I'm pretty sure it's not because it isn't a good game.

I don't really think it would be good for this feature because I don't think there's much discussion to be had from it.

Maybe, but I doubt Jonny would put it in the poll if he didn't think enough of a conversation could be born from the game.

Reviews from 1985, or from more recently? Looks can be deceiving: Enter The Matrix looked interesting and we all know how that game turned out (hint: garbage). There is a reason why many people haven't played it; because it is not a good game.

Recent reviews from IGN and some VC specific review sites.  And I think that the reason not too many people have played it is because it got lost in the launch of 18 titles.  Plus "puzzle/platformer" has never been a popular genre.

Off-topic:  Is your user name taken from Godzilla or the French, death metal band?

I've always loved Godzilla films, and I thought using the Japanese name would be cool.
