Nintendo Gaming / Re: Get DSi, or wait for DS2?
« on: February 27, 2009, 08:49:02 PM »
I think Nintendo may want to extend this to 2011...if Nintendo could get another 3 years out of the DS brand that would be good.  But realistically 2010 may be the target date.

It all depends on DSi sales. As the recent thread about Iwata Asks shows, they were working on DSi in 2007. They are already working on DS2 or whatever the next hand-held hardware will be. If DS Lite and DSi sales soar, it will be a while. If sales begin to tank or even taper off, then we'll see it sooner. Japan will be the deciding factor as well. DS didn't need a boost in the States yet because Japan DS sales were slumping they pushed out the DSi. I'm also willing to bet that the new DS will not be out before Dragon Quest 9 since that will be a system seller.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Moon
« on: February 27, 2009, 08:41:22 PM »
IGN said in the Nintendo Voice chat podcast that MOON sold horribly so far like under 5000 units or something.

It was under 1500 units.

It made me want to run out and buy it but I can't afford to, I already spent more than I should have for February and March on gaming.

Speaking of Monkey Ball, that IP hasn't appeared on a Nintendo system in a while. I think were about due for a new one.

It is true, though, that most of the announced IP's from that conference were not 'epic'. Punch Out isn't the next epic game. Yet, has Nintendo ever been known for really huge Final Fantasy-type epic games?

I see what you mean now. You guys are looking for the 30+ hour experiences like Okami or FF VI, right?
Well considering Kid Icarus from Factor-5 is dead, I can't think of anything else that is for sure coming. I'll bet we'll see something at E3. E3 is going to be in May again, right? I think Nintendo learned their lesson last year about not showing anything.

We know that there is a 'new Mario' and a 'new Zelda' coming. Plus Pikmin 3 and judging from how big Pikmin 2 was, that will be awesome. Fatal Frame will probably arrive this year. Since Disaster and Soma Bringer are out (in Japan) Monolith has plenty of time to develop something new for Nintendo. Intelligent Systems just released Fire Emblem on DS so they are free too. Don't forget Retro is probably working on something new along with the two Prime Wii-Leases. There's also Project Sora. HAL isn't up to anything in particular that I know about other that the limbo Kirby game. Silicone Knights may or may not be partnering up with Nintendo for that unnamed thriller project especially if it turns out to be Eternal Darkness 2 since Nintendo holds the copyrights and patents for the game and the sanity system.

Lets list these out:
>Fatal Frame
>'new Mario'*
>'new Zelda'*
>Pikmin 3
>Monolith game
>Intelligent Systems game
>Project Sora game
>Retro Studios game
>Silicone Knights psychological thriller game
>HAL game (maybe Kirby?)

OK, so I count a potential list of ten games. Do any of those interest you Ian and Chozo? Can anyone add to this list at all? Remember this is just 1st and 2nd party projects I am listing. The list would more than triple if we added 3rd party endeavors.

Why would anyone want Bomberman '94 when Bomberman Blast is available?

Bomberman Blast uses polygons with a fixed camera view.  Bomberman '94 uses SPRITES!  The appeal is obvious. :)

Maybe its my nostalgia monster again, but movements with sprites feel better than 3-D models. But the Wi-Fi is what sells the WiiWare one.

Love it.

First Capcom leaves Sony to develop for the Gamecube and Nintendo fans rejoice but when it does the opposite they pound-their-fists and cry like little babies.  :)

I wouldn't be surprised to see this title ported to WII 2.

Its the cycle of life, my friend.

Suddenly The Lion King started playing in my head.

Well, whatever the writer picks. Whether the readers want to hear that is something else.

That's true. Some people force a game to be good in their minds because they spend a lot of money on it. So if they read a poor review they get very defensive.

Me want.
The music is nice, though I would much rather like an atmospheric track like World of Goo. Course, I'm a bit biased, World of Goo music needs to be the soundtrack to my life.

Thanks for the heads up Flames.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Silent Hill Remake on the Wii???
« on: February 27, 2009, 06:51:55 PM »
They'll turn it into a rail shooter. :-)

I thought Origins was alright. The boss fights were beyond easy, though. The final level was WAY too long, though. And it was technically brilliant.

I haven't played Homecoming yet...I keep hearing bad things. But I do love Silent Hill, so if they remade the first game for the Wii (or PSP), I'd be all about that.

I smell a Wii/PSP project. ;)

I never played any of the SH games so I'd be down with either a remake or an entirely new game.

Nintendo is fine and has good 3rd party support that is growing every day. I'm still a fan. There have been a number of quality epic scale titles already released by Nintendo and others. More is on the way constantly.
Maybe I just have less disposable income than you, but I can't keep up with all the great games coming out on Wii.

15761
Ian if you had a PS3 or 360 you will see how bad most of the demos are after playing though a bunch of them. The worst demo in recent memory was Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, if you want to know why ask Mr. Jack or whoever bought the game and played the demo.

Is that true that the Banjo Kazooie demo sucked? Wow. That's sad... though it does shed some light on why the game was an absolutely horrible failure in the marketplace.

Demo sucked because according to Nick you get a vehicle that's not very suitable on the specific level that you are on. The main reason Banjo Kazooie N&B bombed is two fold (despite the 40 dollar price tag). 1. Gamers that were interested in a Banjo Kazooie game were probably burned that this isn't a usual platformer game.(I fall in this category) 2. There is simply no interest for this type of game in the existing Xbox 360 userbase.

I think this shows that most Rare properties do not suit the XBox fanbase.

Looks pretty slick. Though I'd rather have a black elite model. I would love to get a red controller though. I miss having a variety of colored controllers like the good ol' N64.

Well, they've said they'll be broadening their musical horizons w/ DLC in the future, so these wishes aren't totally out of the equation, Spinnz (that's your new nickname, ok? ok!).

On the heels of the broadening musical genres announcement is the new one about Snoop Dogg coming to RB.

General Gaming / Re: Flower
« on: February 27, 2009, 06:55:26 AM »
I'd love to have Flower on Wii. I would get it if/when I get a PS3.

I think its only part of the market that bashes artsy games like Flower. A lot of people praise artsy games. I wouldn't consider Endless Ocean an artsy game though. It's pretty, but not artsy. I think the refusal to review EO stems from some traditional gaming journalists who wish to draw lines defining games. EO is more of a game than Brain Age, My Aquarium or the Personal Trainer series. You explore and have goals. There is a story as well if I understand EO correctly.

People who deny EO as a game never played it or played it less than me.

In the chart you can replace 'Mario Kart' with any and all over powered MKWii items like the blue shells.
You can dodge the blue shell using a mushroom. Just grab one before you make your way to the front position. Of course, if you're a poorly-skilled gamer such as myself, you won't have to worry about the blue shell because you'll never make it to first. :-\ But that doesn't mean you can't have fun! :)

I think the items were more overpowered in Mario Kart Double Dash!!. Firstly, it's a lot harder to block shells since you can't drag items behind you anymore. Most of the character-specific items were pretty ridiculous as well, and there's no way to dodge the blue shell either.

You can dodge the blue shells in the exact same way in Double Dash. But there were fewer of them. You don't need to trail Items to deflect shells, you just have good timing. It's more the frequency of the very powerful items in MKWii that kills it for me.

Should we be having this conversation in the 'Hi I'm new' thread? Would it be better to find an old Mario Kart thread or start a new one do you think? I don't want to scare away new members with our crazy but fun MK debate  ;)

This also shares some of my thoughts regarding the game:

Those aren't your thoughts!!

No they are not, that is true. Yet they convey accurately what my thoughts are with regards to the game and my frustrations with it. I never took credit for the creation of the picture. I'm sorry that it looked like I was. I would not want to ever steal XKCD material and claim it as my own. His humor is better than mine.

Plus he dose often times portray things that are very similar to what goes on in my head. That is why much of his stuff is funny to me.
Like this- it is how my imagination works. Frightening, huh?

TalkBack / Re: Punch Out!! Rated Everyone 10+
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:35:17 PM »

Are you still running Windows 98?!?
Yes. It is the best of Microsoft's operating systems. I don't know why anyone would want Vista as it seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Punch-Out isn't a boxing game. If they change it into one then the developers completely missed the point of the game.
With Next Level Games, you never know. They completely missed the point of a Mario game with Mario Strikers.

I personally enjoy XP. I find it superior to 98 and still very game friendly. Vista I refuse to touch with anything that will then touch my computer.

I disagree with you about Strikers. I found it to be very fun and enjoyable to play.

Also, look at your last post's response to mine, then look at your following response to pap64; I think your first statement answers your second. Accessories like the Rumble and Expansion were not required to play most games.  That logic is what makes pap say what he does about WM+ being optional in other games.

It's perfectly possible to make huge, technically excellent, and "conventional" games on the wii -- just look at RE4!  Sure the models have to be a bit lower poly, and the sweat might not glisten quite as brightly, but those are the sort of restrictions that game developers have always worked under.

I'll add to that by pointing out games like Conduit, Winter (even as a tech demo), Overlord and Cursed Mountain, among others, are very advanced for the Wii.

15769
Wait, I'm confused. You don't want to buy the game because it is better than previous Mario Kart games? Or is it because you don't want to further increase your profanity ratio?

Sorry for being unclear. I did exactly what you said you shouldn't do and jumped straight into the multiplayer.
In the chart you can replace 'Mario Kart' with any and all over powered MKWii items like the blue shells.

Thats cool that you are learning new langages.

Alright we have a release date. March 10th.

Yay for a release date! Except I just spent most of my gaming budget for the next month. It'll have to wait a bit then.

Really!? I'm gonna go try it out.
I hear this game got ESRB rated. I am really hoping for this, Soma Bringer and ASH. Nintendo is crazy to not bring them over. I should learn Japanese fluently and offer to translate all these games to English for half the cost others would charge. Kind of a community service thing.

But I need to finish learning Hebrew, Arabic, Latin and Spanish first. Yes, I'm an aspiring language nerd.

You could stream it to your DS, but at that point you might as well cut out the Wii and stream it from the Internet to your DS.

My Aunt has a TV in her kitchen. It's so she won't miss parts of the Super Bowl when she's in there. So her and her and the rest of the small minority could also get Wii's for their kitchen TV and use Cooking Trainer Wii.

15773

Maybe I'll change my tune after borrowing the game from a friend and playing a few rounds online with you guys on the next NWR Wi-Fi Night.

Ditto... except for the borrowing from a friend part. I'll have to rent it and see. The next time there's a Wi-Fi Night with MK Wii around here, I'll try to get in on it.
I don't know if that's such a great idea. Mario Kart Wii takes a little getting used to, especially if you've played any previous MK game extensively. If you jump right into the online racing, it might leave you with a bad taste in your mouth if you happen to run into any steep competition. If you do go this route, then try to get in as much practice as you can before the night, and unlock some goodies too. To unlock Birdo play Time Trials on 16 courses. Just do it.

Hence the reason I haven't felt the need to go buy the game. I'm a classic Mario Kart player who has been part of a Mario Kart loving family since the SNES days.

This also shares some of my thoughts regarding the game:

Interview with the developer

Apparently the choice for no deathmatch was because killing people is too violent, I'm not sure I buy their ethics reasoning, I find it more likely that they were watching their age ratings.

That's probably how they kept it at E10. Has anything with a Teen rating come out for WiiWare yet? I know there is a zombie-horror-on-an-airplane episodic game being worked on for WW. Do you think Nintendo gives a heap of grief to anyone who goes into the mature realm?

I also didn't like the little awards in Prime 3.  It's bad enough I have to suffer through that crap on the PS3 and 360.  I think you could switch them off at least (I think).

I actually like that and was hopping they added a similar system for the two Prime Wii-makes. Guess that's just personal preference in the eternal 'achievements vs. no achievements' debate.
