I was considering a purchase but I realize the whole appeal of the game was playing with the community. There were a core 3-4 of us almost always playing and about a half dozen other people that would pop in randomly from time to time as well. Made for a fun and varied experience.

But half of those people don't even frequent the boards here anymore and the few that do don't plan on getting this game. So I have a feeling I'm going to end up passing on it. I played City Folk for hours with other people and I never really got bored with it. But that was with other people. I don't want to play the game solo for 20-40 minutes a day.

Monster Hunter serves the same purpose for me (glorified chat box with fun side games) while having much more fulfilling gameplay.

I may cave on the purchase depending on what sort of community develops for it on the boards.

So I keep getting random Miis in the plaza that are labeled as 'Met through Invite'. What is up with them? And why do they not seem to count towards my street pass totals? Is it a failed street pass that only got partial information before leaving?

And I know a new reason why it is so hard to street pass in America. Kids don't have their systems set up for it. I saw a family in my restaurant I work at playing with it and they either fully turned off the system when they ate or didn't have it set up for wireless communication. I almost went out and talked to them but I didn't want to be the weird creepy adult with a 'Nintendo toy' trying to get the kid's system to communicate with mine. That seems strange as an outsider. I'll bet a lot of well-intending parents who don't understand how it works make sure it is disabled to protect their kids.

Hehehe.  nice catch thanks Adrock.  I needed to proofread my post better.  2 analog sticks.  Though...you could do 4 maybe...and replace the analog triggers with analog sticks for your pointer fingers yeah....that would work.

And the next generation of kids is born with carpel tunnel. My hands hurt just thinking about that idea Spak. :P

The divisions being combined allow for then to make a seamless network interface. No more of this fractured crap. Then both systems get designed at the same time and 'connectivity' between the systems isn't an after thought or a last minute, glitchy addition.

Imagine if the GBA and the Gamecube teams were talking with each other. Or better, the DS and Wii. There could have been a lot more interactivity than there was and with better performance.

So what you are showing is that Valve has better computer engineers than EA. Too bad Valve isn't doing Wii U development.

5
Having the handheld and console as separate entities allows Nintendo more freedom to mess around like they enjoy doing.

And allows Nintendo to gouge our wallets on more hardware purchases. ;)

Joking aside, you have a good point. I had an idea similar to Ian's but doing anything like a dongle station to attach controllers and such might fracture the market like we have seen in the past. N64 Expansion Pak, Circle Pad Pro, Classic Controller...these have weakened the exposure ability of games. While us game nerds like having extra dongles and controller options, the average consumer will probably ignore them and a portion of the market would be alienated and confused one way or the other.

Is anyone excited about this? Haven't seen anything on it until my wife discovered the news.

It is surely only a matter of time before the 2nd title will be on everything that uses electricity. I own multiple versions of the original. What system or device is everyone hoping to acquire it on? I find I prefer using a stylus for the game over anything else so if the 3DS one is not gimped like the DSiWare version was I may bite on that one.

I don't see what compromises there would be. There are workarounds to meet both needs.
They could just model both the handheld and the console marketing similar to how they do the DS/DSi or 3DS/3DS XL marketing:

Release the NinTablet that is smaller - maybe even clam shell akin to the 3DS - and market that as their 'handheld-centric' device.

Release a NinTablet XL that is as large as a modern tablet with larger storage space.

Both can play the same games and even make both connect to your television via wireless or USB dongle. Then consumers can decide how they want their experience to be from the get-go. Would that be so hard to go along with?

I'm torn over the same question for several games. This and Fire Emblem especially. I can see Fire Emblem being more of an ideal digital title what with the turn-based gameplay making it a perfect 'pick-up-and-play' title. Plus I never really trade off games so the fear of it permanently being attached to the system is a non-issue. I have just always preferred physical copies. Steam has been warming me up to digital purchases but consoles and handhelds are different beasts. Having the cartridge just makes the purchase more 'substantive'.

Monster Hunter was definitely a more 'hunker down and play' experience with Tri. I was planning to buy a physical copy until I just found out you can play the 3DS version online...then I read up and discovered you have to be connected to a Wii U to pull it off. That may cause me to just wait until I buy a Wii U and get that version of the game. I have a LAN adapter (3rd party) but that just seems like a clunky way to get online with the 3DS version. That removes the portability of the online portion of the game and that just means you may as well get the physical copy. If you have to go through the trouble of connecting the 3DS to the Wii U to play online there is no reason to have the digital copy latched to your system unless you see yourself randomly farming by yourself. I tended to be more of a 'social gamer' in Tri and see the same thing happening with Ultamate.

Since you favor physical copies and the online is bound to the Wii U, what is the added 30 seconds of sticking the physical Ultamate game into your 3DS? I say buy the hard copy.

On a side note - I'm surprised that no one has done a 'Project Warp Pipe' for the DS/3DS so that those local LAN games could be played over the internet. It worked well with Mario Kart Double Dash. I could see something like that really benefiting this game.

Nintendo Handheld Discussion / Re: Dear Nintendo: Free e-Shop idea.

If they're in-game DLC, I think that makes it more reasonable. They're not 99cent apps, they're 99cent DLC fun time.

This would be great for all of the e-Reader cards. The GBA version of Mario Brothers 3 had extra levels on e-Cards and they could easily sell 'level packs' on the eShop for those who missed them.

I almost never turn my XL off. I leave it charging in sleep mode. But now after reading your post I turn it off more at night. I don't think it would be a problem but I don't want to risk it until I know more.

Even with the wireless on my XL lasts a good while in sleep mode. I think close to three days. I pretty much keep it in sleep mode constantly in hopes of someone in the park or motel next-door triggering the StreetPass.

Since Nintendo now offers the Circle Pad XL in NA I don't think that serious of a redesign is necessary. Nicer screens would be nice since the pixilation does grate on occasion. It's not as bad as I feared it would be but I think I mostly notice it after playing on my nicer Galaxy S2 screen.

If you want a fun party game then get Jungle Speed. It is a huge hit with everyone who has played it. Can go up to 8 players and has just as much crowd appeal as Wii Sports or Mario Kart. I would argue that it has even more of an appeal than those games since it is a relatively simple card game. It even gets the 'refuse to try other casual games' folks to give it a go. Almost never get my brother-in-law to try a videogame and he had trouble passing his remote to someone else last Christmas.

13
Ouch, that's a lot of extra points. Can you gift on 3DS or Wii U? Could arrange a trade with someone where you gift a Wii title and someone else gifts you a title from a different system.

This feels like the eternal issue of 12 hot dog buns versus the 8-pack of hot dogs; it never ends...and it's worse if you buy those Hebrew National Kosher dogs that are in sets of 7.

I have a few points left on my DSi. I should have thought it through and gotten extra points to buy enough stuff on there before I did my system transfer to the 3DS. Now I have an odd number of points stuck on my DSi. Too bad they didn't transfer to the 3DS and convert back to dollars.

I actually half assumed that the wallet would be unified with the 3DS and the Wii U so it is disappointing to find out they are not.

Nintendo Handheld Discussion / Re: Luigi's Mansion 2
« on: May 07, 2013, 02:26:26 PM »
First mansion or two I kept replaying missions to get all the goodies. By the third I got most everything there was except a few gold medals. For the last ones I just did my best to find all I could the first time through as I've lost all desire to replay missions. In part it is because I have no idea which missions have the gems hidden in them and I don't really want to tear apart a level I got both the boo and gold medal on just because there MIGHT be a gem nestled away somewhere.

They should have given the option to not end the mission right when you finish the primary goal. Being able to keep playing and finish everything in one go would have avoided all of the fatigue methinks. It caused me to be paranoid I would unwittingly trigger the level ending. I like being given the luxury of mopping things up instead for being forcibly dragged out of the mansion.

I think the first game never did that to you for the sake of creating 'missions'. This creates a lot of unnecessary padding that also helped to drag out the experience.

The multiplayer sure does make up for it though. Feels like I've barely scratched the surface of that beast.

It's coming to Wii U?  And Dyack is involved? Cool. I thought it was just a small band of ex-Silicone Knights devs putting together a dream game of theirs. I also thought it was only going to be on PC.

I'll be watching this game for sure. I know they dropped a good deal of material from Eternal Darkness so I do hope that some of that appears. Also, Dyack always hinted at a 'hidden' 5th Ancient (the opposite of Mantorok the Chaos God and represented by the yellow magic in the original title) so here's hoping for that to be expanded as well. I remember researching that for my Eternal Darkness Mafia game years ago.

My biggest concern is that Nintendo, the rightful copyright holder, throws a wrench into things. Best case scenario Nintendo takes them and the project under their wing and it becomes a 'true' sequel. Though they can just change names and such but Nintendo even owns the copyright on the whole sanity gameplay element.

General Chat / Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:51:29 AM »
It is always jarring when a show mentions or shows your locale and it is wrong. I remember an episode of Bones where they warn of 'mosquitoes the size of your fist' when going to the Pacific Northwest. My question... where? Never seen one that big. Basic research could avoid a lot of these bumps.

17
Are you sure? I thought that you have to get some sort of licencing deal to be able to rent out movies or else it's some sort of copyright law violation. Just like you can't technically do free showings of films in the park on a big screen without a studio OK.

18
The tough thing is there are shows only available exclusively on one or the other that we like.

So Amazon's selection is smaller. We may just start doing both services next year if we like enough shows on both services.

19
I just noticed that the Wii has an Amazon Video channel. I don't have an Amazon Prime deal but I had been considering the switch from Netflix to Amazon. It is cheaper in the long run. Now that we can watch Amazon videos on a TV we may do the switch. I just need to research what the different lineups are for each service. Plus getting that 2-day shipping would be handy.

What is everyone's opinions on comparing those two services?

Crap, South Park is going down? I never got around to watching them all. I know the Bond movies were going but now I'm worried what else is dropping. I was going to watch Stargate SG1 again with my wife but those were pulled as well. What a bummer.

Don't know if I like the sound of that news. Looks like Nintendo is going to be 'tightening their belts' when it comes to software releases and that means less 'experimental' games or new IPs. Less niche game releases.

Hope it's not the case but that is what it sounds like :/

Are you sure that they don't mean the president of the overseas operations (the heads of NOA and NOE)?

I always felt that NOA had their hands tied because of the choices made by leaders in Japan.

I think new types would bring a lot of freshness to the series. Hopefully they are adding more than one. Always wanted to see a crystal/diamond/glass type.

24
I want to see Earthbound 64 come back. I liked the art style of the screen shots that were released back in the day. I think that EB4 on the 3DS is a more likely release than the Wii U considering #3 was a handheld release.

25
Maybe we can get EB Zero on the VC next considering Nintendo already has a fully translated version of that sitting in the vaults.

Plan to make this one of my first VC purchases when I get a Wii U. It better sell as this could open a floodgate.
