Nintendo Gaming / Gamecube and Game advertising in the darnedest places.
« on: August 29, 2003, 12:50:06 PM »
I'm making a kind of offical thread to put instances of game advertising outside of a video game store.

On moment for some reason my connection and computer is acting up, I will have to reboot. It posted before I was done and it dumped most of my post.

I have read several topics such as this, and just now I have read another one on another site that just made me snap. So I'm reviveing this for prospereity sakes since some people have short memories. And since I didn't find a simular topic the last few days, I'm making my first orginally post in a long time.

I would first like to start out by say to those that like the idea of a fragmented market to stop moaning because the higher price is the direct result of free market trade on a market with numberous suppyiers and (I don't know a good way to this) multiple outlets for the supply. Because you see the oposite of popular, and blind, opinion that free market trade always produces lower costs. On the contray, espeically in the console industry, in most monopolys the products you pay for from them is cheeper than in free market.

The reason for this is in a free market the naturally occuring monopoly normally would want to keep competitors out so there are numerous ways to do so. One of them is cutting the price to the poit were any entrants into the market will not be able to make it feasible to stay in the market. Another is to have high quality and sell things at a normal range.

Let's first use the console market as an example.

When Nintendo use to have the natural occuring virtual monopoly with the NES, games were cheep and high quality, for the time. (The average NES game was $20-to-$30) This was a result of Nintendo not wanting to give any room to competitors. Now with all monopolys they come to an end usally because of them controlling the technology of that market. (Nintendo did that and Sega came in with better techonology, and MCI was created when AT&T didn't want to use satilite technology.) But as a result of Sega entering the market the price of the games rose dramatically. (Some games went new for $100.00, and that wasn't just because of the carts but companies trying to get profits in a fragmented market.) Not only that but when another compeitor entered the market not only did it up hold the higher average cost of the games (though by now they started to equalize as all things do) but the quality went down to help artifically drive down the production costs and the end price.

And now this generation there are still three contenders and prices seem the have stayed at last generation rates. But not all is rosy, because the price of producing those video games are still climbing higher, that because to sell a game in such a market you have to have glitz and techonolgy for those who want eye candy and not really games. That is why you hear developers saying they want to go back to the simpler (in design, not dumbed down) games it costs less for them to make but that is not entirely possible in such a sales enviroment. So as it stands right now most developers will have to face the discission to up final game costs or go out of business.

Next is the Handheld market.

Nintendo still has a natural virtual monopoly on the Handheld market what do you see. Game prices are still low and on carts, and that is were all of the Gameboy's rival are trying to cash in on. The price? Orginally games for the "Wideboy" use to be 10-to-20 US dollars when it first came out, now they are $30-to-$40 and that is easily explained as the increased cost because of inflation and carts are now not normally used outside of the market so production costs went up.

The handheld market games could go up or down right now and it depend on how well the rivals do eventally. Because if they do get a foothold what we seen with the SNES games will happen, the handheld game prices will go up to console prices maybe even higher (Not right away, it takes time for tension to build up.).

So the moral of the story is if you want a fragment market such as we have in the game industry don't go crying about higher game cost because the market is not controllable so the suppliers of the games have to fight for money. It makes me accually worry about what will happen if the PSP or Nokia accually do manage to break into Nitnendo's monopoly. And I have to say that Nintendo's monopoly is an example of a "good" monopoly there are bad monopolys (hmmm I wonder who...) and their are bad effects from even good monopolys (Techonoly, labor treatment, etc.)

There is also good to be said about the fragmented market. More companies so supposedly more ideas come to the table, the entrance cost of the gamers (consoles) prices are lower. (Unfotanetly we may see a back lash from this also.)

So there is most of it. Please feel free to discuss.

I just got a "sneek peek" at the new Sonic Premiums that McDonalds is going to have starting next week, and in each of the bags there is an advert for several Sega Gamecube Games. (Funny but Sonic Adventure DX is not one of them considering..) There is three different toys in the series and I already have my hands on two of them.

So I guess that is some "free" advertising for Nintendo at least. The games are Sonic 2 Battle, Sonic Megacollection, and Super Monkey Ball for Gamecube and  Super Monkey Ball Jr and Sonic Advance 2 for the GBA. I will put a scan up in a moment.

Here's the pic. (In .png formatt because its kind of big even with resizing.)

« on: June 18, 2003, 03:03:17 PM »
It seems Sony and Microsoft is facing a hard audience in attracting online player. Reuters today gave numbers  that Microsoft released today. It seems where in the US they have attracted around 500k gamers to their service. In Europe they have only found 50k.

Nintendo Gaming / Interesting Tid bit from a japanese survey.
« on: June 13, 2003, 08:24:15 AM »
A survey in the Japanese(?) magazine did a survey on the PSP. Besides having customers and game store almost tore in half over looking forward to it, there was something interesting that pertains to the Gamecube/GBA connections. It seem some of the top things that customers would like to see in the PSP is the ability to connect with the PS2(/3) like the GBA/GCN connection.

So the connection may not as bad of a business decision as some people make it out to be.

Here's the page its from. (Magic Box)

Nintendo Gaming / There will be no Spaceworld 2003.
« on: June 04, 2003, 11:07:23 PM »
Not totally unexpected. Since Nintendo last year basically said it was a waste of time and money. (And that it halted game development.) I think the press conferences they have to announcement major things are better.

The link is forth coming, its was reported by Gamespy.

Here's the article from their news site.

Nintendo Gaming / Gamecube shows up in Fox Trot.
« on: June 04, 2003, 11:03:47 PM »
The Gamecube was mentioned in Tuesday's strip. Its seems the author has an affinity for Nintendo since the N64's controller makes it appearence quite often in the same strip.

Nintendo Gaming / Experiment sucessful. (Pokemon Transfer.)
« on: May 15, 2003, 06:50:42 PM »
I don't know if it has been covered but the Pokemon Ruby and Saphire can do what the other version couldn't, transfer the characters between the Japanese and US versions. I just finished transfering some of my best Pokemon I decided to try it one I found out collosium was a go.

Note: I havent' run into any problems yet. And I have been playing it awhile afterwards. If you left the name in Japanese script that is how it shows up in the US version. You american named pokemon will only show up with about 5 of its letters in the Japanese game, but if you transfer them back there full name returns so the information isn't lost.

A bunch of Palm Inc executives are getting together in a company called Tapware to make a handheld system code named Helix.... They are going to try and compete with Nintendo and Nokia with superior technology.

The only number they are pushing are:

The Helix boasts twice the color palate of the Game Boy and nearly 16 times that of the N-Gage. It offers a screen resolution well sharper than either one and a much larger screen size.

Connell said the device will play full-motion video in a number of formats, as well as music in the MP3 format. It will also ship with a photo viewer and all the productivity applications that are part of the Palm OS.

Here is the Reuter's News this information came from.

Oh and they are going to try to target 18+ who have "graduated" from the Gameboy... I didn't know it was a school....

It seems that not all is lost in the mainstream. Reuters has reported that G4 and Entertainment Week has come up with a list of the best game(s) ever. Toping that list at number one is the Zelda series, followed by Doom (? At least they had a good start.)

Here is the top 5
1. Zelda
2. Doom
3. Tetris
4. GTA III
5. Madden NFL 2003

It seems Nintendo and EA combined for 20 of the top 100.
I'll try to find the EW/G4 article.

NWR Feedback / Boards version 4 suggestions
« on: May 02, 2003, 04:29:49 AM »
I made a topic that all suggestions for this new version so it doesn't clutter the board. I love the new boards even in its, hopefully early form. But I did notice that the bars on each message were a little harsh maybe you could try to chamfer them again and give them a lower profile.

Oh and I'm happy that I can finally edit the messages in the Talk Back Forum. Keep up the good work.

General Gaming / Sony's last Quarter.
« on: April 24, 2003, 05:56:30 PM »
I was watching Bloomburg Channel, don't ask me why I was board. It seems the Sony revenue was four times lower than most analysits predicted. But the PS2 has risen (no big surprise...)

It seems that Nintendo will be revealing a new Gamecube Pokemon Title in KoroKoro comic mag in Japan, and supposedly it won't be the Pokemon Box...... Sorry if this is old I scanned down the titles and didn't see anything.

Here is the link:

Magic Box news...

If someone who is in Japan can get it, it would be nice to post it. (I'm looking into an static IP address software.

Today in an article of Electronics Design Magazine. Sony's COO Ken stated that they won't be able to put the Cell Processor in the PS3, for the estimated release for the processor is now in 2007. Now to the Question what will they put in there, and this basically blows the rumors that the PS3 will be released in 2004 out of the water.

A bit of personally I told you so: I remember saying that Sony and IBM will not be able to make it by 2005, because a project such as that always experiences delays.

Nintendo Gaming / The Nintendo Gallery Alludtion
« on: March 31, 2003, 04:57:47 PM »
Well I'm up to Gannon so I decided to go and do some of the side quests and looking for more life. While I finally get the Delux Pictobox and and the Nintendo Gallery. And the delopers decided to put in a very good alludtion into the game. You supposedly need a membership to get in. But the person say it alright if I got in without a membership because they have been loosing members, because of lack of Gimicky Promotions. But he says the true fans know this is the coolest place..... (or something like that, pretty close but not word for word.)

If you don't know what they are getting at it about the Gamecube. Pretty good and funny in my opinion.

Nintendo Gaming / Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire Reserve and bonus.
« on: February 17, 2003, 04:01:57 AM »
I went anime shopping this last Saturday, also to put more down on Zelda which my place didn't bother to tell me that they required the increase until the day before, picked up Inu Yasha's Third volume (And I ended up being the first to get the demo at that store the manager wasn't there and the cashiere sliped it under the table.) But as I was cheacking out at the bigger of the two Sam Goodies at the mall I noticed some coins behind the cashiere, two different color one Red and one Blue with the letters Pokemon emblazen on the card. I asked it seems its the reserve bonus if you preorder Ruby and/or Sapphire. I ended up preording both and recieved each coin. They look as if they are either brass or gold plated with a hologram placed on the front with the main Legendary Pokemon of each in them. (In their respective hues.)
