And they tell you before you buy it if it's the last one and isn't shrink wrapped, so it isn't like they force you into it. That's been my experience anyway.

They have never told or asked me if it was. Every time they just go about like business as usual putting the disc in the box and then are all confused/shocked/scornful/humored when I say I don't want an open (I sometimes use the word used) game.

Yeah, same experience here.  I've never had a Gamestop employee tell me that this was the last copy and that I'd "have" to settle for a disc from the drawer.  I've always had to press the issue.

Exactly. It'd be different if they sold those "new" games at used prices, as that's exactly what they are. If it's a game I want immediately, I drive to Wal-Mart. Otherwise, I order online cheaper and avoid paying taxes on top of it. ;)

TalkBack / Re: RUMORS: Next Nintendo Console May Use New Intel Processor?

Nintendo would really doom themselves if they moves away from AMD. As much as I've hated ATI, I still have to give props to AMD, regardless of the merger.

Actually Zap, I'm more concerned that they tend to put stickers directly onto the box of so-called new games. Of course, these "new" games are kept out of the box and placed in a filing drawer isntead, where they get scratched up. :P

Unless Epic is giving away their engine, the UE3 iPhones are going to cost more than $32,000 to make.

Well, actually... http://developer.nvidia.com/object/udk.html

Dazzle has been making absolutely great a/v capture devices for years and years, so they're not at all a bad suggestion. The included Pinnacle software, while far from my personal favorite in video editing, is generally respected.

I also find that the interface is poorly designed.

Agreed. The interface felt too much like a cluttered, MMO to me.

I'm getting the feeling that DDR and Rockband are going to be spending a lot of time together on store shelves in the next few years.....

I still think that the DDR pads should be integrated into DJ Hero. DJ really only exist at clubs, so having a stripper or go-go girl on the DDR Pad makes sense.

The question is, which one?

Sands of Time

This is not debatable.

Seconded. If you will only get one game then get Sands of Time.

Thirded. Though the newest, just plain "Prince of Persia" was also quite impressive.

The art style was nice looking, though didn't feel as justified as I think it should have. Other than that, I thought that the missions were pretty bland and that the controls were terrible (per usual fro a console port).

They've really re-invented themselves in the last few years, which is no easy feat after being irrelevant for so long.

You mean they went from playing bubblegum punk to playing bubblegum punk while wearing lots of eye liner? :P

Am I the only one thankful for the on-rails RE?  RE5 was so boooooring.

Ditto.

This is why I own three Dreamcasts. Ironically enough, I've never actually had any issues with any of them.

Yes, Steam goes by region. If you try to install a different region it will give you an error.

I guess then that my question is: how does Steam decide what country you're in? Is it just by IP, or does it detect your country settings in Windows itself? Both of those things could be easily circumnavigated. Likewise, would it really stop you from installing a disc-based copy of the game if it's from, say, America?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Blaster Master confirmed for VC

I already posted in the Talkback thread about this.

Blaster Master was easily one of my favorite NES games. I'm very happy to hear this news! :)

I wonder, does Steam actually differentiate between regions? I mean, what's stopping someone from simply buying a North American retail copy on Amazon and then activating it within the Steam client?

Yes! I loved Blaster Master. It had to have been one of my most-played NES games back in the day.

So why would anybody want to emulate Ultima, at all, ever?

Maybe it's beause Ultimate is a seminal series within the RPG genre? If nothing else, it was a pioneer in taking the feel of the early MUDs and making them truly visual.

I haven't been able to try the demo yet. The game was developed by several of the designers from the (real) Diablo series however, so the resemblance is understandable. The last great action RPG that I played was probably Titan Quest, so I might just give this a go. :)

That's correct. The 4GB SD cards still aren't very big though. Not when you're talking about storing large chunks of songs from every full-band game thus released. :P

The Wii itself will support SDHC, but the game will not.

Lately, I've been thinking that it's not that L4D2 is an expansion pack but that L4D had such little content from the get go that it wasn't much of a game for its asking price.

The campaigns from the original game will be re-released as an expansion pack for the sequel! :P

TalkBack / Re: Guitar Hero Franchise May Adopt DLC Subscription Model
« on: November 24, 2009, 08:20:39 PM »
I think the problem is that none of these games are really the "platform" that they try to pretend to be. Rock Band certainly does a better job of it (except on the Wii), but still falls short with things like The Beatles. Likewise, for this genre to truly have lasting appeal, there needs to be interoperability. These games are all so similar that it's pretty ridiculous that I can't use one series' DLC in the other series' "platform". Of course, this isn't likely to happen due to simple greed, but it should. Then the companies could simply make the better platform, or chart their DLC better, in order to outsell the other.

Oh well, I'll just have to stick with RawkSD for the time being. It's just too bad that Rock Band doesn't support SDHC cards, or else I've have a lot more Guitar Hero music to choose from. :P

This ultimately sounds pretty boring, especially given the lack of recipes. I hated Cooking Mama for much the same reasons I believe that I would hate this; boring, repetitive tasks with no real purpose. On the flip side, I thought that Order Up was great, as the progression and choice in assistants added a lot to the strategy and story. Now if only someone would create a game like Order Up but with more advanced restaurant sim-like mechanics. I want to choose the price of meals and handle order/inventory! :P
