Now you need to go download the Evil Dead Trilogy fanedit, that combines all three films into one long, seamless experience! :)

"Greed", the desire to want more than you have and the dedication to realize your desires is one of the primary forces that ensures that our civilization continues to evolve and change.  It is neither innately bad nor good.

Greed isn't the desire to want more than you have, it's the desire to want more than is needed. It almost always spirals into malevolence as people are driven to acquire more than is needed by depriving others of precisely what is needed.

I would like to nominate Konqueror as the winning web browser. Anyone who disagrees can go to hell (which would probably be an eternity of using Internet Explorer).

Not really. Firefox FTW!

That's what Kauke is for! It's a drop-down console akin to Quake's. There a few similar programs in the various repositories, but Kauke is the one I like.

Gnome is alright. It always felt too stripped down for me though. Besides, I've grown so accustomed to KDE that it'd be hard to switch over at this point. I mean, I've been learning it since the earlier versions of Mandrake. Of course, I'm still getting used to KDE4. :\

1081
Kopete was originally limited to just the KDE environment. It's been ported to a few others since it's initial inception however. I'm not sure why you'd want to use anything other than KDE, but apparently some people do. :P

You could just bookmark things you plan to read sometime. :P

I was never too fond of Gaim, especially once Kopete hit the scene. Trillian hasn't been worth using since they cluttered the UI up a few years back. Again though, ICQ is about the only thing I use any of them for. I have accounts for the other services as well, but don't really talk to a lot of people on them. I'm elitist like that. :P

I don't think Microsoft would want to pull the plug on Skype for Linux. Its in their best interest that it work on as many platforms as possible, I think. Even if they did, something else would just come along anyway. I remember when AOL purchased ICQ and basically drove it into the ground. At that time ICQ was the number one IM thing, but now its probably one of the least used. That just shows what can happen when a huge company buys something.

I don't think that they will "pull the plug" either. I guarantee that they will redirect focus, however. It'll slowly fade away due to a general lack of support and updates. That's assuming MS doesn't tamper with the setup so bad that no one wants to use it anyway. :P

ICQ is still the only IM client network really worth using, short of setting up your own Jabber server. That said, I haven't used the client itself in years, largely due to the ads. Kopete, Gaim, and Trillian have all offered better client side interfaces for years.

Hitler overreacts to everything.

On that note, I'd suggest everyone actually watch go "The Downfall" (Der Untergang). It's a great film. It's too bad those memes haven't brought more useful attention to it.

I guess I won't be installing Skype on my netbook any longer. I was already uncomfortable enough running it under Linux, but there really weren't a lot of alternatives at the time. Somehow, I can't see Microsoft continuing to support my preferred platform with Skype. :P

Sony announces new console as current fix!
I can't find the onion video you linking to.

Fixed. Make sure the forum isn't censoring the word "****" in the URL for you.

The Dreamcast natively outputs everything at 640x480. Getting the VGA adapter is the only way to play, especially when comparing graphics.

It's unfortunate that all the social options in PC gaming don't share some basic universal protocols for chat, notifications, and other things.

TCP/IP? :P

Intel's performance ratings really do not make up for the prices they charge. AMD is a better bang for your buck when it comes to processors.

Unagi, why don't you scope out NewEgg and compile a wish list of your build? You shouldn't have any issues whatsoever building what you've listed for far under $1,000! I'd be looking for at least 16GB of RAM though, especially if video and audio editing is high on your priority list. You could keep it cheap and stick it out with DDR2, or jump on the bandwagon with DDR3 and future-proof yourself. It's up to you. Most motherboards will let you jump up from DDR2 to DDR3 later anyway.

You shouldn't need to worry about RAID. You can get single 2TB drives super cheap nowadays. I always preferred a simple Master/Slave setup to RAID anyway.

AMD has some great AM3 socket processors that can be acquired on a modest budget. The Phenom II quad core lineup even comes in nifty "Black Editions" for easy overclocking if need be.

Find a good nVidia GPU. 1GB dedicated memory shouldn't be difficult to keep in the budget, as it's pretty much the standard now.

Get a good motherboard!!!. I almost always prefer Asus as a starting point, but have also been impressed with Gigabyte. I'd hazard against the no-name brands, and definitely stay away from "gamer" junk like BioStar... they may look pretty, but they're crap out on you eventually.

Do you have preferences like AMD/ATi vs Intel or Nvidia?

He wants the goods: AMD and nVidia. ;)

Don't a get a laptop, period. You'll pay more for less, and be stuck with an oversized paperweight a few years down the road because you can't upgrade it like you can a good desktop. Besides, even the best discrete graphics card still sucks compared to a full sized mid-range PCIe GPU. Not a great path to take for video production and image manipulation.

If you've never played it before, I'd wait for the HD remake of MDK2 that's coming to the PC.

I still have my old Dreamcast and PC discs somewhere...

Maybe now everyone will take a long, hard look at buying into closed systems. Doesn't it suck being at the mercy of some uncaring corporation's servers? :P

I'm pretty sure that Picasa will tag the location. I'm not 100% on that though, as I simply use it as a viewer and screensaver. :P

Edit: Apparently my reply was superseded by mere seconds. Damn you BlackNMild!

They are the ones who decided to confuse and flood their audience with expensive peripherals and add-ons that saw little support and had a very short lifespan.

Huh? You mean Nintendo and the Wii? Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro. WiiSpeak, Wheels, Zappers, etc. I thought we were talking about Sega. They do what Ninten-don't!

The only time Sega was releasing peripherals left and right in such a manner was when they were on top of the world with the Genesis. Even then, some greats things came from their diversions. The CD add-on, for example, had a handful of games that still holdup as greats titles today.

The only Sega console that quickly lost support was the Saturn. And that was largely due to developer reluctance (high prices didn't help the market either). Beyond that, there were a few Genesis add-ons that weren't particularly utilized. The Dreamcast is still the best home console ever produced, both from a hardware and software standpoint. The only reason it failed was due to consumers' hard feelings over the prior Saturn and (more so) Sony's outright lies and FUD over what the upcoming PS2 would be capable of.

I'd welcome Sega back with open arms. Of course, the management that existed during the Dreamcast era is long gone (and actually helped to make the Xbox what it is). Sony hasn't really done much for the gaming community other than bring frat boys in.
