Reader Reviews / Re: Rate The Last Game You Played

Conduit 2 -- Wait for the review (I'm struggling through the writeup), but the bottom line is "Meh."

Combat of the Giants: Dinosaurs 3D -- As Josh said in his review, it's dinosaurs fighting in 3D. I wish there was more meat to this game, but...it IS dinosaurs fighting in 3D.

Super Meat Boy -- I'm getting to the really hard stuff now. This game is boneriffic.

If Perfect Dark wins--and it looks like it's going to--I'll have to get in on XBLA. I've been looking for an excuse to get it.

And Portrait of Ruin is underrated. Seriously, that game was insanely fun!

I didn't like the level design as much.

Portrait of Ruin was the series' first big step toward "Harmony of Assets" or whatever that XBLA game is called. They pallete swap entire LEVELS in Portrait.

I'm surei t's been said already, but crap like this is just another reason why DMR games are terrible idea. What if I want to play Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 or that Streets of Rage HD remake? I can't because the PSN is down.

KMJ, we may revisit this theme sometime. Two of your suggestions are RPGs, which we specifically avoided because they tend to dominate voting and are hard to play through in a reasonable amount of time for the show schedule. Mega Man is a good idea, although that is by far my least favorite game in the whole series. I love Pikmin, but does the "remake" really add much? The controls were fine in the first place, and I don't think there are any other differences.

*gawks* How do you not like Powered Up? It's so...it's so good! In some ways, I like it more than Maverick Hunter X! Certainly has more replay value. And the level editor!!!

Mega Man X Collection works fine on my Wii, connected via component cables to an HDTV. I remember a lot of reports on this issue back when Wii launched... wasn't the answer traced to your TV model? In any case, you can also manually disable progressive scan in the Wii system menu, and that should do the trick if there's some incompatibility.

It's my TV model? ****, I hope not. I've tried disabling progressive scan from the Wii menu, that does nothing. I've tried composite cables. Maybe it is the TV model...well, this would give me an excuse to get a new TV. Or maybe a used GameCube.

Hey, I've got a question: does Trophy support go away when PSN's not working (like it's not now)? 'Cause I was playing lots of TR Underworld last night and I didn't get one stinkin' Trophy, which is very strange. Now, if Trophy support IS down, will the Trophies I should have gotten not "count" when PSN goes back up? Because if that's the case, I may as well just restart my game (I just cleared the first level).

By technical faults, I mean aiming sensitivity, hit detection, floating objects, inconsistent character models, that sort of thing.

You guys are liking the game a lot more than me. I think it's okay, and certainly better than the original, but there are technical blunders abound that bug the hell out of me. I haven't done too much multiplayer yet, though--maybe that's where the meat is.

Totally forgot to mention that. Yes, the Remote by itself works with Wii Motion Plus and the Classic Controller.

Once you go black, you'll never go back.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/26135

Memorex, the nice people who produced a DSi charger kit and system shell that I reviewed awhile back, recently sent me one of their new products: the Wii Game Controller Combo Pack. The box held a snazzy black Wii Remote, a similarly stylish black Nunchuck (called a “Sidekick” here) and a little black cube that plugs into the bottom of the Wii Remote. After playing with it for several days in various circumstances, I’m come to the conclusion that it’s a worthy accessory if you’re still in the market for Wii controllers. In fact, despite the lack of a Wii Remote Jacket, this black controller is pretty awesome and has become my default Wii Remote.

What’s so special about a black Wii Remote? After all, there are first-party versions readily available. This Memorex version, though, improves the basic technology in a few key areas. First and foremost, it’s pretty. A ring of bright blue LED lights surround the D-pad, and a similar blue ring shows up on the body of the controller. The Sidekick has a similar ring around the analog stick and another on its body to indicate that it’s synced up. The Sidekick is wireless, which is a plus. Both halves of the controller feature nice rubberized grips and large, sturdy, somewhat rubberized buttons.

No, that's not a Wii Motion Plus.

The Sidekick must be initially charged by plugging it into the back of the Wii (via USB cable). The syncing process could probably go quicker, but it’s basically this: you plug a little black cube, which is the wireless input to the Sidekick, onto the bottom of the Wii Remote, which by the way doesn't contain Wii MotionPlus functionality. You sync it by pressing a button on the Sidekick and then it’s off to the races! The only trouble comes when loading up games; in what I can only describe as a minor annoyance, I found that I had to re-sync the Sidekick (never a hassle) every time I loaded a game from the Wii’s Home screen or exited a game and went back to the Home screen. Because the sync button is just a tap away, it’s not really a problem.

This is the controller they use in Tron. FOR REALZ.

The controller looks awesome with the blue LED lights, and it performs just as well as a normal Wii Remote, with one nice advantage: the D-pad is shaped like a circle, somewhere in between the Xbox 360’s D-pad and the 3DS’ Circle Pad. It’s far more comfortable than the first party Remote’s miniscule D-pad and I found certain Wii games (like Donkey Kong Country) easier to play with this Remote. One irritation worth mentioning is that the “sync cube” fits a little too snuggly into the Remote’s ventral port. You have to wiggle it a little while depressing two buttons on the side to make it come loose.

The only real downside is that the cube does not act as a Wii MotionPlus (barely a concern, given Nintendo’s support of that device). So if you want to rock some Wii Sports Resort or Red Steel 2, this isn’t the way to go. For the other 99% of the Wii’s software library, I’ve got to say that Memorex has done a fine job here.

The whole shebang. Not too bad. By the way, it's about $40. Just FYI.

TalkBack / Zach's Gaming Stuff: Conduit 2 Edition
« on: April 22, 2011, 09:51:27 PM »

Yes, it's real, and the version I got is beyond awesome.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/26126

I got a really big package in the mail today. It was filled with foam peanuts and a slightly smaller box containing...Conduit 2! Yes, that once-mythical, much anticipated sequel to the overrated, but still halfway decent, The Conduit from a few years ago. Remember that game? Lindemann loved it. Anyway, that's a big box for one game. There must be more in there! Let's rip it open!

Well, I kind of expected the game. The fact that I got the special edition (SCREW YOU, GAMESTOP!) is really nice. It includes an artbook and a bunch of unlockable in-game bonuses like gold armor and some special All-Seeing Eye.

Heeeere's the game itself, complete with game disk and instruction booklet! The art book slides in right behind the instruction booklet for easy storage.

At 44 pages, this artbook ain't no slouch. Pretty pictures, too. I just hope the actual game lives up to their majesty.

This is probably how the October prequel to John Carpenter's "The Thing" is going to start. But instead of a heavily-armored marine, it'll be THEIR DOOM.

SPACE MARINES YEAH! Suck it, Master Chief. This...guy...is far more awesome than you. Seriously, I mean, look at those fin things on the shoulders.

Now, if you imagine this guy as having the voice of Samuel L. Jackson, he becomes 1000x more awesome. "I have had it with these muthaf*ckin' Drudge on this mothaf*ckin' plane!"

Tough to get a good sense of scale on my kitchen table, so here's Conduit 2 Guy with a bunch of beautiful women of various scales! If you can name them all, you get internet points.

Black Widow didn't know what hit her.

So there you have it, folks. Conduit 2 special edition and big awesome statue. How's the game itself? Eh, nothing special yet, but I'm only two levels in. Certainly performs better than the original (how could it not?) but doesn't look a lot better. In fact some parts look terrible. But the review shouldn't be too long coming.

Gratuitous (and heavily-armored) ass shot!

Still watching Larry Sanders. By season 4, it's starting to get...more serious than funny. Still funny, no doubt, thanks largely to Rip Torn's pitch-perfect delivery of his character, Arthur.

Has anyone tried the Wiimote Controler Holder? If so, is it hard plastic or fabric? How useful is it?

Zach did an unboxing blog about it last year.

Good times.

TalkBack / Rango: The Video Game Review
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:28:40 AM »

Too simplistic? Maybe, but enjoyable just the same.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/26006

I just saw Rango today at the movies. I got a free ticket with the DS game, so I thought "what the heck?" As it turns out, the movie is really good. The DS game, on the other hand, entertains in fits and starts. Despite a fairly constant stream of upgrades and new powers, Rango on DS feels a little to out-of-focus to be a first-rate title. That doesn't mean it's bad—just that it takes some getting used to. Although initially slow and maybe a little frustrating, the game does open up before too long. You've gotta be willing to give it some time.

The game is a sequel to the film; Rango is still the sheriff of Dirt, but Bad Bill and various other ruffians have been causing trouble. The townsfolk again call on their chameleon lawman to save them from peril. Rango's gameplay is reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass without the boat. Displayed in a top-down perspective, the game has Rango running around an impressively large desert world avoiding all manner of varmints. Rango does battle with his foes in several different ways that are added to his repertoire over the course of the game.

Rango can change into four different outfits. This is accomplished by holding L and pressing a direction on the D-pad. Doing this causes Rango's skill set to change. The four available skills are Basic, Sheriff, Excavator, and Duelist. All have their own environmental uses and different skills. Only two of them, however, feature worthwhile attacks (Sheriff and Excavator) The four outfits feel different enough that it seems like you're controlling entirely different characters. The other outfit-specific moves involve getting around the world: the Duelist can leap over short gaps, the Excavator can push and pull blockades (and dig up treasure), and the Sheriff can launch special golden bullets that you use to trigger certain switches.

The game amounts, almost entirely, to finding your way to a marked spot on your map (top screen), which usually involves some minor puzzle-solving and lots of enemy-killin'. Enemies do become tougher the longer you play, but their basic types never change. It always feels like you're killing same handful of re-skinned enemies. Switching between roles is fun, but there’s an over-reliance of the Sheriff and Excavator skills, making it feel like the game doesn't even really need the other two. Pickups gleaned from treasure chests and defeated enemies nets you money and, more importantly, badges with which to upgrade your powers. Your basic character skills never actually change, but your attack power or running speed can increase. It's a nice feeling of progression, but it’s a shame that there's never anything to buy other than more badges.

The gameplay falls short only in that it becomes tiring fairly quickly, especially once you stop gaining new roles to play. Eventually, you'll find yourself mining badges and completing sidequests for townsfolk (kill 50 rabbits, kill 5 armadillos, etc.) who will shower you with gratitude and even more badges.

Graphically, Rango looks pretty good. The game tries to replicate the look of the movie, and does pretty well in this regard, despite the technical shortfalls of the DS. Despite the absence of voice acting, the script evokes the same sort of sillyness that the movie portrayed. This is especially noticeable than in the main character's monologues. It's the music that I like the most—it's catchy and nicely western in tone, as it should be. The only knock I can give the presentation is that the desert setting does get old after a while. You can only see so much sand and cacti before it all starts to meld together.

It took a while for me to get into Rango, but after giving it a few hours, I was pretty well hooked. Despite its underlying simplicity, the game has a charm that's clearly lifted straight from the movie. Add to this the likability of the main character and you have a game that fans of the movie should definitely givea shot.

The Larry Sanders Show (season 1)

Holy crap, you people need to watch this. The whole series is on Netflix Instant now. It's amazingly funny, and it's so great to see lots of famous actors at younger ages. Rip Torn is absolutely pitch-perfect as Larry's friend and producer. If you haven't seen or heard of this show, go watch it now. You'll love it.

Also, Larry wife is hot.

See, I liked the Star Trek movie with several caveats:

1) You're right about the ship designs. No utility whatsoever.
2) The alien on the ice planet was awesome, but onscreen for about fifteen seconds. I blame Cloverfield.
3) The water tubes in engineering. WTF?
