Skeptic away. The online is robust, but only if you can connect to other players (I've had terrible luck). I blame my location.

Since MGS3 is a prequel to the entire series, you shouldn't be lost. It doesn't even feature a proper Metal Gear, so I wouldn't worry about it.

My biggest concerns are:
1) Will it in be in HD with better colors? Playing the PS2 game now (which I just recently did) is hard to do. It's muddy, grainy, and the character models are awkward.
2) Will it feature the Subsistence content?
3) Will it feature more on the touch-screen (on the fly) and less going into menus constantly?

1253
One hopes that the game controls better than Peace Walker does(n't) on PSP.

Hahahaha...after listening to the episode (finally), I can see why everyone was crowing about James. However, I've always taken the philosophy that Jonny and James are natural oppositions. When Jonny's on, his presence repells James' more obnoxious commentary. Certainly that kicked in after Metts got on the second half of the show.

James did have some good zingers though, I'll give him that.

And Greg, truly a shame about DoA. Random matches are just not that much fun, and I can't play co-op Tag Team without a friend. :-(

Skullgirlz looks a little wierd to me. I need to see it in motion. I don't like the character designs, that's for sure. They seem generic and a little too 'tooney.

I can let you all in on a little secret: DoA Dimensions is quite good. The review should be going up today. I haven't played Street Fighter IV 3D, but Dead or Alive packs some content into that little card...it's just too bad the 3D effect it's that great.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: WiiWare Games Worthy of Buying
« on: May 31, 2011, 03:23:56 AM »
I'm surprised nobody brought up the ReBirth games. Castlevania ReBirth is amazing, but short (and gets hard quick).

MM9 is great, but a little too hard (still have to beat it--Wily gets me every time). MM10 is much better, more balanced, though it's the same kind of game. I really love NyxQuest; I just replayed it a few months ago. There's a simplicity there that you don't often see. I'm also going to recommend Dive: the Medes Island Secret. While it gets tough in places, it's basically a side-scrolling version of Endless Ocean and it's surprisingly long.

Cave Story is tough. It's on WiiWare, but it's also on DSiWare, and it's ALSO coming to 3DS with newer, nicer graphics. The DSiWare and WiiWare games are the same except for the graphics. It's an excellent game, but you have to decide how much graphical pinache matters to you. For me, I think having it in a portable format would be best for me. I might actually beat it!

And although it's not WiiWare, I'm going to recommend Shantae: Risky's Revenge for DSiWare, a game I still play today. ;-)

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Soul Calibur 2 GC - still worth it?
« on: May 31, 2011, 03:16:46 AM »
SC2 is still my favorite Soul Calibur game, and I've played 'em all (except Broken Destiny--but I'm working on that). Link is also one of the best characters in the roster, especially compared to the other exclusives.

SC3 was fun but it didn't wow me. My friends and I had a good time playing through the adventure mode with all our created characters, though.

SC4 is very fun, but I do have a problem with Starkiller from a balance standpoint. He's just like a WALL after a steady stream of slightly-upwarding challenges. You've been playing Medium and Hard mode, then you get to Starkiller and it's all like GOD MODE, BITCHES.

Started a show on Netflix Instant called "Out of Practice."

Despite a promising case (Clark Kent from Ugly Betty, Phil Dunphy from Modern Family, The Fonz, Lisa Cuddy's sister from House, some lady as the mom, and Jennifer Tilly), the show suffers from predicatable and unimaginative writing. The core conceit--they're a family of doctors, falls apart after the second episode because none of them are ever at their jobs. They spend more time in each others apartments (which are all in the same building) and the coffee shop, which destroys the illustion. They don't even really talk about medical things.

So after 10 episodes, I think we're going to stop watching it.

Sony has finally issued an update on the PSN Store on their Blog, confirming that they have yet again failed to fulfill a restoration date promise by failing to have the service up by the end of May.  Now the official line is "by the end of the week".  Oh joy, even if the PSN store does get restored at the end of the week, I'll be out of town on family business by then till late Monday night.  Good job, Sony!

It boggles the mind how a company can bumble everything they have done so far.

The Phoenix speaks the truth. This whole thing has been a series of unbelievable ****-ups from a giant company who should've known better long ago. Their general attitude has been appalling, too: "**** breaks, you whiners. It's gonna take us some time to build the infrastructure we should've had six years ago." But yeah, this "end of the week" crap is worthless. What was wrong with "end of the month?"

Good podcasts, gents, although I thought it was funny that nobody could bring themselves to press Stop. I think you're all spot-on with your predictions, although I do NOT think they'll say two words about Pikmin (sorry, Andy) and we'll find out that Animal Crossing is just City Folk in 3D. Here are my own (cynical) predictions:

1) Reggie will come out and somehow turn the 3DS' lowball launch into something celebritory. "We sold a million units in Syria!" he'll say. He'll tell everyone watching here and at home to turn on their 3DS and download the latest update, which will bring the DSiWare shop to the 3DS. Reggie will not give a hard launch date for 3DSWare, though, only something like "be ready this fall." He'll talk about a lot of games, unfortunately a lot of games we already know about (Zelda, Star Fox, MGS3). He'll talk about Mario 3D and how it should be out for the holidays. Mario Kart will be out by late summer, maybe the fall. That's the system seller. It will support unprecedented SpotPass functionality. But the big title? Smash Bros.

2) On 3DSWare, we won't get much an idea of what it will be. However, I am convinced that Nintendo will start publishing actual high-priority titles for it (Mario vs. DK doesn't count, Neal). They need to get top-tier franchises on 3DSWare (or any downloadable platform) if they want to be taken seriously on the downloadable frontier. We need an original Mario game, maybe Mario Kart...I think something like Endless Ocean or a PokePark game would work well.

3) They'll tout the success of the Wii but they'll make it clear this is the last "big bang" year for Wii. Dragon Quest X will be a big reveal. They'll talk about Wii Play Plus (or whatever it's called) but nobody will give a ****. I doubt Nintendo does either. Like Andy said, they just want that brand to stay alive. But the big game at the show?

4) Zelda. We'll actually learn about Zelda, and maybe its troubled history. We may actually see something completely different (aethetically) than we saw last year. After all, that's the last time anybody saw it. I don't think they'll have Miyamoto or anyone else come out and demo the show in front of a thousand people, but they MAY have some other random developer come out and demo an incredibly small portion of the game. Maybe in a box. They want it to be controlled, they want to show it works.

5) I think the DS/i/Lite/XL is dead in the water, but Nintendo may launch a new bundle, something like the Wii now, with a system, big-ticket game, and maybe some "premium" accessories. The DS needs a sendoff, and it hasn't gotten one yet. I doubt we'll see any new games for the DS this year aside from 3rd party licensed games that nobody wants. Despite that, Reggie can turn that into a plus: "developers are still flocking to the DS." Yeah, sort of.

6) Project Cafe! Iwata will whip that sucker out of his inside coat pocket. It will be small and compact. I'm with Andy that it'll be black, but I wouldn't be surprised if it launched (eventually) in multiple colors. It will be backwards compatible with all Wii games and Wii accessories. However, Cafe games themselves will not support Wii accessories. We won't get a lot of details on the Cafe software, or even its launch window. I can see them bringing back F-Zero and maybe a real Star Fox game. I think they're big news will be that developers who had formally stayed away from Wii will be making the games YOU love on Cafe, including Modern Warfare 3. Cafe will be a viable multiplatform system, relatively easy to develop for, and lacking in the gimmicks that drove people away from the Wii.

7) It will not have a screen in the controller. I guarantee none of the "confirmed rumors" or speculation regarding the technology or the hardware are true. I will bet you that Nintendo adopts a more Xbox Live style online system ('bout time) but makes it more boneheaded. They still haven't figured this online thing out, and it might take some time. I am hopeful, however, that they build the Cafe system around the concept of firmware updates.

Consider yourself added! I'll try to get on later tonight...I have a Memorial day BBQ to run to this afternoon.

1265
I'm game. I'm too lazy to look up my system code (it's in the 3DS Friend Code thread) though. I tried to play with Greg earlier today but the geographical disparity (England to Alaska) proved too tenuous for our systems to handle.

I've said it before, but I'm bitching about it again: I have these download vouchers for LA Noire and Dante's Inferno and currently no idea when I'm going to get to use them. End of the month? Sure, but I wish Sony wasn't waiting until the last second.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The original Jurassic Park is my favorite movie of all time. Even though I recognize the film's flaws (some of which are huge) it is overall a masterpiece--one of Spielberg's best films and THE best dinosaur movie ever made. A few years later, Crichton went back to the Mesozoic well and Spielberg came right along for the ride. David Koepp took Crichton's book and basically re-wrote it, made it more of a family picture, more of a survival story. He made it a lot worse.

The Lost World is an incredibly bad movie. It has  pacing problems, casting problems, effects problems, plotting and scripting problems, etc. The whole gammut of "bad movie problems" are here. The movie is promising for about twenty minutes between the opening scene and the call to action by John Hammond. After that, **** gets shitty. The effects scenes are...THERE, but everything looks muddy and out-of-focus. Part of this is because of the increased focus on pure CGI effects, whereas the first movie balanced CGI and animatronics. The most effective CGI is at the very beginning of the movie, with the family of Stegosaurus. Everything else is a muddy mess, even the tyrannosaurs and ESPECIALLY the raptors.

I'm not saying the book ("The Lost World") was a good book by any means (really...read it) but it's plot was better than the movie, more coherent, and had a lot more to do with the darker backstory of Jurassic Park. While the book provides Michael Crichton with an avenue to espout everything New he's learned about Dinosaurs since the first book, it also gives an interesting side of the geneticists and manufacturing of Jurassic Park and how the park came to be. The film, however, boils it all down into a "humans vs. people" chase story where everyone lands on one side of the island (crashes) and is trying to escape from the other side. Then, at the end, they ship a tyrannosaur to L.A. and Spielberg gets to film a Godzilla movie.

It's just a terrible movie all the way through. It's not worse than Jurassic Park 3, mind you, but JP3 is a whole different beast. It's a theme park ride where science was deliberately swept far, FAR funder the rug. But we'll get to that movie another day. The point here is that I hadn't seen The Lost World in at least six years and I finally did--by accident--on TV, and decided to suffer through. I can't recommend it.

I have a 3DS, a netbook, and an iPod. I keep waiting for DoA in the mail, too, but it hasn't happened yet.

All but one of my doctors (two of my doctors) had given me the A-Okay to head home. Now it's just up to my primary doctor, who's generally a real worrywart, and I suspect he'll want to keep me overnight for observation, but I'm gonna fight it tooth and nail. If I do have to stay one more night, I guess there is a Heat/Bulls game on.

I wonder if this could change Zach in anyway? Sort of like crayon and Homer Simpson....
Zach is great as is, but i'm curious.

Worry not, Mr. Vega. I am still obsessed with dinosaurs, gaming, and chesty women.
Chesty figurines too.

Is there a difference? I'm just sad that Dirty Little Figures isn't being updated. Wonder Woman is next on the docket...or maybe Tamaki Kousaka.

My brother and I had the NES version of this game. It had fewer characters, but it was still fun. Its exclusive character was the dragon warrior from the Archie series--he had a fire breath attack. Because the turtle's sprite colors changed changed for the 2nd player, we pretended it was a whole different character--Slash. If the SNES or Genesis games came out on VC, I'd totally get them.

Aw, you guys are awesome. Thanks for the all well wishes. Now, here's what's going on...

On Monday after work, I came down with a nasty migraine headache. I didn't think it was a big deal--I've gotten migraines before (routinely, even). But it hadn't gone away by Wednesday, and I daresay it had become intolerably painful by Wednesday night. It felt like I was being stabbed in the back of head every time my heart beat. So we went to a place called FireCare (kind of a 2nd-rate ER) and they told me it was a meio-facial headache and that I was dehydrated. I got a deep-tissue neck massage and had two liters of fluids injected into my arm. Great. But I did feel a little better.

Next time? The pain is just as bad. Went back to FirstCare, and they told me to head to the actual ER. Which I did. The next two days are a big blur. The ER doctor gave me a lumbar puncture and then immediately took me into emergency brain surgery for a brain abcsess. This is serious stuff--it's where bacteria (or fungus) have broken through the blood-brain barrier between the sinuses and the brain and are now sitting directly on the surface of the brain. My brain got scrubbed, lots of spinal fluid was cultured, and I got sent to an ICU room.

That's where I've been ever since. I perpetually hear from my three doctors that "tomorrow" I will have my head tube removed. The head tube is used to equilate (is that a word? I'm still woozy) pressure in my skull but it can also be used to take a sample of spinal fluid OR inject antibiotics directly to the abcsess site. That might happen tomorrow, as my spinal fluid is still "cloudy," or filled with bacteria. I'll know more tomorrow...

Once the head tube is out, I'll be able to move from the ICU to a normal hospital room and start the actual road to recovery. I'll have to learn to walk again (seriously) and my primary doctor will have to figure out a med schedule for me to take home with a CADD pump to give me antibiotics through my PICCline IV. So that's the story. I'll know more tomorrow. Keep pulling for your favorite dinosaur-obsessed staffer, guys. I might not make it to the next Newscast, but I can't imagine why I'd be kept away from later episodes!

I'm struggling to understand how James ran out of whale names for Infinite Space. Unless he was limiting himself to a single branch of the Cetacea, there should've been plenty to go around. James, were you using common names or genus names? Or species names? There are even more possibilities if you're using the full binomial. Then you can have, say, a whole sub-fleet of giant Balaenoptera ships.
