The worst game featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/extralife/26827

Some of you may have fond memories of this 1989 NES title featuring everyone's favorite heroes in a half-shell. You may actually remember enjoying it, but rest assured, it is a horrible game. Need proof? It’s readily available on the Virtual Console for 600 Wii Points. Because I’m a whore for the franchise, I actually bought a partially-sealed copy at a comic shop a few months ago for $20. I don’t even have a working NES, and I already have it on Virtual Console! However, I’ll never play that cartridge—I bought it just to have it (the cover art is spectacular).

What about the game itself? The best comparison I can draw is to Castlevania, in that, most of the time, you wander through side-scrolling stages duking it out with enemies who usually have nothing to do with the old comics. I remember Mousers, but I don’t remember guys made of fire or balloons that drop torpedoes. The game is actually divided fairly evenly between side-scrolling brawls and overhead map-questing. Every level consists of a whole lot of overworld navigation, in which the turtles wander between buildings and manhole covers and try to find the level's exit. In one stage, you get to drive the Turtle Van around, and you use missiles found in side-scrolling sections to blow up barriers. In another stage, you have to both find and use tightropes in side-scrolling sections to find the final boss. In yet another level, you have to find the Technodrome, which appears at random in one of the side-scrolling sections. And then there’s the dam level.

Bebop and Rocksteady are the only recognizable characters in the game from the 1980's animated series.

It is absolutely horrible, and occurs so early in the game that you may never get past it. For one level and one level only, you must navigate a treacherous swimming section while battling: an unforgiving time limit; invisible, but very strong, ocean currents; highly-damaging electrical coral and traps; and a scavenger hunt for bombs. It is one of the most poorly-designed levels in gaming, and it's a miracle I can still muscle-memory play my way through it today without losing a turtle.

Oh, that’s one of the nice things about the game: you basically have four life bars, because you can switch between all four turtles at any time. Unfortunately, three of them are essentially useless. Leonardo, Michaelangelo, and Raphael have short-range weapons that aren't very powerful. Donatello has a gigantic staff that decimates everything it comes in contact with — especially bosses. Thus, you end up using the other turtles only when Donatello is low on health, and any pizza you find (which restores health) usually goes to him. Should one of your turtles “die,” they can be rescued starting on Level 3, though you can only free one turtle per level. Thankfully, the game hands out subweapons like candy, including ninja stars and a wave-like attack that is fairly powerful. Often, these subweapons are more desirable than the default weapons of Leo, Mike, or Raph.

Welcome to hell, population YOU.

Despite the game’s high production values (looks great for an NES game and has catchy music) it just has too many gameplay problems to be worth your time. It features slowdown, the occasional instance of freezing, enemies that respawn the second you scroll back, the world’s most useless grid-based map, and insufferable difficulty. I can’t recommend this game to any but the hardest of the hardcore TMNT fans, as every subsequent video game in the franchise is far superior—especially its three direct sequels.

A free, fun, and ultimately useless app.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/26809

Ever want to see Serperior in 3D? Well, now you can. Pokédex 3D, which you can get right now at the eShop for a whopping free ninety-nine, allows you to view all of the Unova Pokémon in eye-popping 3D, their stats and - best of all - their entire learned and TM-based movelists, and descriptions of the moves, and all of the other Pokémon that can learn that move. You also get their egg group, abilities, and AR sticker. It's surprisingly robust and makes those giant player's guides redundant. The Pokémon look great, much better than in any Pokémon Stadium type game. They even animate when you tap one of the onscreen buttons, and you can read their Black and White Pokédex descriptions.

The most disappointing portion of the app is how you acquire new Pokémon. When you download Pokédex 3D, everyone starts with the same 16 Pokémon. To acquire new Pokémon, you have to turn on SpotPass, at which point you can check your Pokédex multiple times a day and discover three new random Pokémon. Yesterday, for example, I got Lilipup, Throh, and Cottenee. To speed up the process, go to this website and follow the instructions to read the AR stickers of all the Unova Pokémon. In doing so, you’ll also unlock a few Legendaries on the fly - which implies they are not randomized and must be scanned to be obtained. If you have friends with Pokédex 3D, you can exchange Pokémon wirelessly.

You can also use the AR stickers to take real-world pictures of these Pokémon, although because the AR stickers are onscreen, you kind of need a second 3DS to take pictures of them, though I suspect you can crudely draw an AR sticker and possibly do it that way (they’re simple block-based designs). Taking pictures also unlocks more stickers, bizarrely.

The menu gives you a lot of options, too. You can change the background, display color, and language. There's a mysterious "update" button too, the purpose of which is currently unknown. All in all, Pokédex 3D can’t be beat for the price, and it’s very fun to see your favorite Unova Pokémon modeled so well in 3D.

Don't pretend you didn't know this was coming.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/26813

Surely some of you remember my Conduit 2 unboxing blog, where my obsession with figures became clear to everybody? Remember? Michael Ford with his gun against Black Widow's back? Well, with the release of 3DS' Dead or Alive Dimensions, I thought it an excellent opportunity to show off three of my Dead or Alive-related girls: two Kasumis and one Kokoro. You might actually have seen them in them already, minus one of the Kasumis, in my Happy Birthday, NWR photo. I have since added two more girls to that collection. At any rate, let's gone on with the pretty pictures!

This, dear readers, is Kotobukiya's "Venus on the Beach" Kasumi, based on her appearances in the nefarious Dead or Alive Xtreme games. Like her compatriot, Kokoro (scroll down), Kasumi is a "cast-off" figure, which means she has an alternate outfit. Unfortunately, it's difficult and damaging to get her bikini off, and you'll see why in a second. But first, do admire the wonderful sculpting of this figure, the nice paint job, all that good stuff.

Kotobukiya is actually my favorite figure publisher right now, as they're also doing the fantastic Marvel/DC Bishoujo series. There have been previous figures in this DoAX line, including Hitomi, Tina, Ayane, and Lei Feng, but they haven't wowed me like Kasumi or Kokoro have. These two just seem to raise the bar in terms of sculpt quality (and expression). Now, I say that, but Kasumi honestly looks a little more bubble-headed than she should. I think it's the partially opened mouth...

I'm doing this just for you guys. Kasumi comes apart in disturbing ways. It's not easy, it's not fun, and eventually it starts to wear on her paint job. Thus, I only do this costume switching on special occasions. Kasumi's red and white bikini fit over her much more revealing blue bikini, and the whole thing is locked in place with her body parts. Every time you hook up or unhook one of her body parts, I can just feel the plastic tabs wearing down. So Kasumi just sits on my shelf in her blue bikini all the time now. I like it more anyway.

See? Isn't that just a cleaner look? Notice her base: she fits on it interestingly. You put her foot in the pool hole and rotate her body around so that she's leaning on the pool deck. The whole thing is surprisingly stable. I have failed to show you Kasumi's butt because, in this bikini, there's way too much camel toe. And nobody wants to see that. It is my one complaint about the figure (aside from her 02-deprived expression). Let's get to Kokoro...

Also a product of Kotobukiya, Kokoro is near the top of my favorite figures (that I own). The sculpting is absolutely flawless--you can see every muscular structure on her body. Her default suit actually isn't terrible, but it's not much of a swimsuit. One thing it does do is make her breasts look larger than they really are because that piece of front-end plastic is about a centimeter thick. I should mention the umbrella--it's fully functional, but I stupidly dropped it not long ago and the paper tore a little bit. Maybe you can see that here--I tried to tape it back together in the back.

Like Kasumi, Kokoro also breaks apart in horrible ways. In fact, she loses her head, but not a whole lot else. However, this is the big problem with Kokoro: while her body doesn't break apart, I wish it did, because the edges of her swimsuit rub against her paint job and ruin paint. Kokoro wasn't cheap (none of these girls are) and I'm irritated that she's developed so many unfortunate paint blemishes over the years. This is all from costume-changing, though, so I did learn my lesson.

This is pretty bad. Look up at her neck, shoulder, and down on her thigh. I'll never be able to cover that up because where am I going to find the exact same skin tone paint? At first, this really pissed me off (it still kind of does) but I've learned to live with it. My new rule: if it's a cast-off figure, decide which costume I like best and stick with it forever.

I like this costume much more, because you can see all the anatomical details. I feel like I should mention here that, according to the Dead or Alive games themselves, Kokoro and Kasumi both have modestly-sized chests. The "big guns" in those games belong to Tina, Christie, and Lisa. The sculptor for Kokoro has decided to ignore that. She has a big rack, which I appreciate, but it's not exactly true to the games.

But...look at her, for God's sake. She's a marvel of sculpting nonetheless. Abdominals, scapular definition, bulges on her breasts where they are constricted by the bikini top...somebody put a lot of effort into this. Okay, that's it for the bikini girls. Let's get to the final figure who was also...*sniff*...my FIRST figure.

It's the BOME Kasumi, white version. There's a blue version and a black version too, but I liked this one's pose the most. Lots of little details to soak in here, including her armbands and shielded legs. Her flowing hair is made of clear plastic, which is nice, and I like the design on her costume.

Kasumi got me into this hobby. I saw her for $20 (actually maybe cheaper) at a comic shop and decided to buy her. Within a few months, I'd bought several more figures (from the now-horrible DC Ame-Comi line). Funny story: when I brought Kasumi home and put her proudly on my DVD shelf, my wife complained that her "breasts are falling out." Ah, time would soon reveal the irony of that statement. Compared to the Kotobukiya girls up there (and most of my other figures), BOME's Kasumi is downright prudish.

There you have it, folks: my three Dead or Alive girls. There haven't been any others announced, although there's a new Kasumi released every few months in Japan. She seems to be far and away the most popular DoA girl. Sometime we'll venture back to my figure shelf, as I have plenty of other gaming girls...but not necessarily from Nintendo games. In fact, were it not for DoA Dimensions, you probably wouldn't be oggling these girls right now!

The implication for #10 is that Aria somehow didn't make the list...which would be extremely wierd.

Not super-happy, but seriously, the Heat were playing like amateurs tonight. The Mavs played great, especially toward the end--they just locked out the Heat, and Labron didn't do crap the whole game. Superstar player my ass. Good job, Mavericks.

The Heat is giving up in the 4th quarter, which they need to stop doing. At least today's game will be in Miami, but since it is, they have no excuse to screw up. Labron needs to start playing ball--he only scored 7 points in Tuesday's game and he was pretty score-free on Thursday, too (just two points in the 4th quarter). The rest of the team, including Bosh and Wade, were trying to make up for it, but the Mavs just went nuts toward the end.

The problem is that nobody's adequately covering Norwitzky. The dude's a beast.

I'm buying it so I can get through the Water Temple without pressing Pause 200 times.

Hmph. See, I never finished Infamous because I got sick of the movement not being as nice as Prototype and the combat was pretty terrible IMO. I also didn't like the stark B&W moral choices that actually gave you a freaking on-screen CHOICE. It was just so blatant, and I'm sick of games playing with "morality" but not really. I don't think I'll be into Infamous 2, but maybe I'll try the demo and see what I think of it.

1212
I'm all over this. Unfortunately, the local game store won't be getting it in until the 21st. So I'll be two days late while the rest of you are running around Kakariko Village.

God, that was a bad game. The Heat just gave it up at the end. I hate to say it, but the Mavs want it more at this point.

This is disappointing, as Snake Eater was one of the games I was kind of looking forward to. I've unfortunately found Peace Walker to be virtually unplayable given the wacky control scheme, and it sounds like Snake Eater 3D is falling into the same pit (of snakes). I'm also disappointed that everything is still brown...that made the PS2 game harder than it should've been, and I thought it was because of the bad textures and character models, but maybe not so much.

Neal and Nathan are at E3 and Andy couldn't make it, so Zach's joined by two RFN alums to dish the dirt on Nintendo's press conference.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newscast/26670

With the announcement of the Wii U and plenty of other announcements at Nintendo's press conference yesterday, Neal asked RFN alums Karl Castaneda and Mike Sklens to jump on the ol' Newscast to keep Zach Miller company.

Can I transfer my DSiWare games yet? If so, how?

1218
For me, it's before 10. Given that, I've got two hours and fifteen minutes to get angry.

1219
Wow, $250? That's...stunning. I might actually buy one at that price, though I'm going to need to see more than Uncharted to me excited for it.

Whatever happened to their laser tag game?

1221
Well, maybe we WON'T find out tonight. The update's still not live.

1222
It's okay, and it has some beautiful set-pieces, but knowing what I know now, I'd skip Uncharted 1 and go right to 2. Aside from Elena's presence, you don't really need to know ANYTHING about the first game going into the second one. These are like the Indiana Jones movies--you can watch them in any order and still enjoy them.

1223
We'll find out tonight, I guess.

Movies & TV / Re: New Movies/TV Shows we should keep an eye out for!

Sometimes it's accurate.

How 'bout that Terra Nova show? Also could be called "Avatar 66MYA" because it's the same guy playing the general. I've only seen two dinosaurs in the trailers: Brachiosaurus and Carnotaurus. Now, the latter is my FAVORITE dinosaur of all time. However, I'm disappointed that they're just pulling dinosaurs from every continent and era. If you're going to land in a specific time, you're going to deal with a very specific faunal makeup, sorry.

The Late Jurassic Morrison formation (where Brachiosaurus lives) would've been great. Where Carnotaurus is from? Not so much. There aren't as many dinosaurs there.

And as my friend Matt Wedel said on his blog, he bets money that there will be "others" encroching on the human settlement, some unknown dino-like humanoid creature, or maybe Sleestacks. The thing that REALLY makes me cringe is that they're actually going to make some of their dinosaurs up: some kind of super-raptor called an "Acceleraptor." God, just use Deinonychus!

Why is making up new species that bad? Aren't there almost certainly tons of species from back then that we don't know about because we haven't found their remains?

Sure, but there are plenty of VALID species that are known to science already. It would be like making up a new eight-horned ceratopsian when you could use the fifteen-horned ceratopsian they found last year (Kosmoceratops).
