TalkBack / REVIEWS: Mega Man Star Force
« on: September 04, 2007, 06:13:28 PM »
The Blue Bomber returns on the DS with a stylish new look, but does this new Mega Man have substance or is his beauty skin deep?
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=14341

Mega Man has seen many incarnations over the years, going from robotic helper turned savior of the world, to futuristic Maverick Hunter, to treasure hunter, and even a computer program. Mega Man Star Force is a complete overhaul of the Battle Network concept, but for the things that are different, there are many more things that remain the same, quite a few of which should have been changed in the first place. Mega Man Star Force takes place in the same universe as Mega Man Battle Network. Two hundred years have passed since the events of the Battle Network games, and the emphasis on technology has now lessened. The world is no longer networked by computers, but by EM (Electromagnetic) waves. These EM waves create a world invisible to the naked eye, but visible through a special pair of glasses called a visualizer, which the game's protagonist, a boy by the name of Geo Stelar, is given by a research colleague and personal friend of his father's. Geo Stelar is the exact opposite of Lan, who was Battle Network's main protagonist. He is disconnected, quiet, and antisocial; he sees no value in friends and avoids school; and he spends his days being taught by the Navi Teachman and his nights staring up at the sky waiting for his long lost father to return to him.

At the very core of Mega Man Star Force lies the still slowly beating heart of the almost seven year old Battle Network formula. However, the formula is shaken up a bit with a simplified battle system, an online friend system, a new point of view for battles, and a completely new take on the old net world in Mega Man Battle Network, having it be integrated with the rest of the world instead of being inside computers.  The new friend system, which is called the Brother Band Network, is a replacement for the Navi battle chip system that was in Mega Man Battle Network. Instead of getting battle chips of boss enemies you defeated, you get a chip of your friend's power that you can use in battle. The effects are mostly the same: you gain an extremely useful attack from your friends to use in battle.

The visuals themselves haven't changed all that much, still sporting 2D graphics with the isometric point of view. The level of detail has been noticeably boosted, though, thanks to the additional horsepower that the DS affords developers, though the boost is less than adequate. The visuals in battle are one hundred percent in 3D, with an over-the-shoulder view of the battlefield from Mega Man's perspective. These graphics don't do anything for the game play, which has remained largely the same.

The controls have remained the same aside from several game elements that make use of the  touch screen. Geo and Mega Man are moved via the D-Pad, with certain buttons thrown in for becoming Mega Man or opening the menu. The implementation of the touch screen is trivial at best, as the game itself would have been perfectly playable without them. The touch screen controls at times tend to be more of a hindrance, particularly during battles ,where the game gives you the option of choosing your attacks with the touch screen, but forces you move Mega Man and initiate his attacks with the directional pad and buttons, respectively. The directional pad controls have a one or two second lag in their response, so some enemies will be entirely too easy to beat, while the faster enemies will be near impossible to even land a hit on before dying.

The sound quality in the game has received a modest boost, thanks to the superiority of the DS hardware, but that's not to say the sound pushes the hardware in any respect, because it doesn't. The music and sound effects are still mostly at GBA quality, still sporting the familiar sounds and tones of Mega Man Battle Network, much in the same way that many series that have made the transition over from the GBA to the DS have recycled audio assets.

This game, when all is said and done, is mostly the same as Mega Man Battle Network. If you did not like the Battle Network series, you aren't going to like this game. To reiterate, Mega Man Star Force, despite all the changes they have made to the Battle Network formula, still feels, plays, and looks like its ancestor. If you are curious about this game, just wait for it to hit the used games shelf or the bargain bin.

Pros:

  • More engaging characters.
  •
  • Deeper story.
  •
  • 3d battle sequences.

  •        Cons:

  • Visuals are mostly the same as the Battle Network games.
  •
  • Battle system is the same, with a new coat of paint.
  •
  • Sound doesn't push the DS hardware much.
  •
  • Online functionality does not do much to increase lastability.

  •                Graphics:  4.5
The visuals of the GBA games remain largely intact despite a boost in detail. The DS is capable of far better graphics than this. Truly disappointing.

                   Sound:  5.0
As with the graphics, the sound hasn't changed very much, either. The very least they could have done is put a little more effort into the in-game music and sound effects. Most of the audio sounds like it was composed with the GBA in mind.

                   Control:  6.0
Haphazard implementations of touch screen controls and a lag in control response are barely adequate.

                          Gameplay:  4.0
The core game play mechanics of Mega Man Battle Network make a return, and they are not welcomed. Those wishing for a completely new Mega Man RPG formula will be disappointed.

           Lastability:  6.0
The online functionality will keep hardcore Mega Man fans occupied for quite some time, but aside from a few end-game side-quests and completion rewards, there's just not enough to keep people coming back.

           Final:  5.0
Mega Man games in the past have been held in high regard, often pushing any genre the franchise enters into new territory. Sadly this franchise began to stagnate a long time ago, and Mega Man Star Force is absolute proof of that stagnation. This new series is just Mega Man Battle Network with a few variations, revisions, a new story, and new characters. For that reason I cannot recommend this game to anyone except Mega Man fans.

Reports have been floating around the internet about GameStops calling up people who had reserved Chibi Robo Park Patrol for the DS, telling them their reserve had been moved to another game because the game had been canceled. As these reports grew and grew, Gamespot's Rumor Control feature investigated the issue and contacted Nintendo directly for comment. Nintendo outright denied the game had been canceled, telling Gamespot that instead the game would launch on October 2nd and had become a Walmart exclusive. Nintendo World Report will keep you updated on the issue. Stay tuned.

TalkBack / Big Rooster's Tim Gerritson Speaks Highly of Wii
    « on: July 27, 2007, 02:14:09 PM »
Big Rooster's founding member Tim Gerritsen calls the Wii "A much needed slap to the face" for the industry, but claims he's still waiting to see games that make good on the promise.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=14109

In an interview conducted by Game Daily, Big Rooster's Tim Gerritsen was asked a question that inquired what his thoughts on the new consoles were. He responded by saying, "From a purely technical perspective, all of the new machines have great pluses and perplexing minuses. I love my Xbox 360, and that's the big winner in my home right now, and I can't wait for the kinds of experiences I'm seeing down the line on the PS3. The Wii threw the gauntlet down and made fun the priority over bullet point technical specs, and the industry quite frankly needed that slap to the face, but I'm still waiting for the games to follow up the promise."

He then went on to say "In terms of approach to design, I don't see the Wii sharing many multiplatform games with the other two systems. It's not just a matter of tech specs but of fundamental design. A lot of games that would rock on 360 or PS3 would just not work on the Wiimote, and the Wiimote demands a style of design that simply won't work on the other two systems. I don't want to play a game like Call of Duty on my Wii, but a game like Wii Sports just wouldn't work on the 360."

"The economic reality of that situation is that publishers and developers have to make a choice to design for one platform or the other, or make a port that's shoehorned onto a platform on which it just doesn't work. That means a split between Wii games and PS3/Xbox 360 games, or a lot of really bad ports churned out to make a quick buck." he added.

Big Rooster is a fledgling game development company, whose founding members have a variety of accomplishments to their name, from developing military simulation games, to contributing to the founding of id Software and cultivating Human Head Studios' First Person Shooter, Prey. Big Rooster is currently developing a game called Talisman for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

TalkBack / EA Admits To Focusing Development On The Wrong Console
    « on: July 27, 2007, 01:14:07 PM »
EA says it was "on the wrong horse" when it came to next generation game development, promises development of new IPs to promote growth.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=14107

Yesterday at its quarterly investor's meeting, EA's CEO John Riccitiello told investors that 2007 was the toughest fiscal year ever for the company.

“[The last transition] was tough because we typically have two to three platforms and a five year period… One of the biggest challenges, of course, was that not a lot of people anticipated the success of Nintendo that they’ve shown with their wand controller and their Wii. That got ahead of us a little more than our expectations." He said.

“Our stock hasn’t moved as much as we’d like," Riccitiello told a concerned investor during the Q&A session of the meeting. He also promised that EA would allocate more resources to developing Wii games, admitting that the company had been "on the wrong horse" during the console transition, having concentrated on PS3 and 360 instead, saying that the PS3 was the focus of game development in the last fiscal year, a console on which EA had seven titles.

He then optimistically told investors that EA had the second-largest market share on Wii as of March with 19 percent, thanks mainly to Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf. He then pointed out EA’s push to create new IP. He said that there is a “strong investment in [new] intellectual property", with games such as Army of Two, Rock Band, Crysis, a Stephen Spielberg Wii game and Playground. He told them that this change in company strategy, in conjunction with a company-wide reorganization would help jump start EA's financial growth and also promised them that it would make the company, and its investors money.

EA's stock closed at $50.65 that day, down 1.96 percent.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day
    « on: July 18, 2007, 01:08:52 PM »
    Nintendo brings observation training stateside.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=14062

At the E3 Business and Media Summit in California this month, Nintendo revealed it was adding yet another game to the Touch Generations lineup here in the US. Known as Miru Chikara wo Jissen de Kitaeru: DS Mejikara Training (Observation Training) in Japan, Nintendo of America has renamed the title, calling it Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day.

The premise of Flash Focus is quite simple, the game utilizes the same concept as Brain Training in that it uses a battery of routine exercises to maintain and even enhance the accuracy of your hand-eye coordination and visual acuity. This game, jointly developed with Namco Bandai, will be home to a number of tests that range in difficulty. A playable demo was available at E3 which featured two playable modes, Quick Play, and Training. In the final game two more modes will be available, Daily Training and Download play.

Going through the Quick Play mode reveals a test called Eye Age Check, a test not unlike what you'd expect to see when staring into some complex armature at your optometrist's. The exercise involves a series of symbols that test eye movement, testing your ability to shift focus from one thing to another on the fly. The letter C appears on both the bottom and top screens three times in an increasingly rapid pace, rotated in random directions. It's up to the player to spot each C before it disappears and then enter the short sequence via an easy-to-understand on-screen display. There are only a few letters, so a good memory really isn't needed for this exercise. You just have to keep track of the two screens, mentally documenting each time the C shows up. The game then calculates your "eye age" based on an ideal age of 20, and gives you the good (or bad) news via a pixelated character.

The Training mode of the E3 demo gave players a taste of the first of many sports based  tests within the game: Baseball. In this exercise, a pitcher throws a ball at an on screen target and the player is asked to simply tap said target at the right moment. It looks to be a bit tricky as it requires not only visual acuity (ability to follow objects and judge their distance), but hand-eye coordination as well. The more accurate you are, the more points you get. Hit it at the right time and the game rewards you with a Home Run.

The retail version of the game will include a more diversified set of different mini games, including counting, tapping blocks and numbers as they appear, as well as a test that requires the player to read a number and then quickly enter it via a keypad after it disappears. There are also a few other sports-themed tests to help you practice your hand-eye-coordination, such as a sparring trainer, ping pong, basketball, volleyball, soccer and American football.

Flash Focus takes after other Touch Generation games with audio and visuals, having a very minimalist appearance. The game is set to ship to retail outlets in the US on October 15th of this year.

TalkBack / Miyamoto and Reggie Spotted in Foreign Booths At E3

Shigeru Miyamoto and crew were spotted touring EA's Hotel Suite and playing their games.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=14048

When you talk to any informed gamer and any video game journalist about Nintendo and 3rd parties, the general consensus is that Nintendo could care less about them, but that all seems to be changing now. MTV's Gaming blog Multiplayer Blog reeled in some very interesting photos of Shigeru Miyamoto, Reggie Fils-Aime, and Eiji Aonuma taking a tour of EA's Hotel Suite at E3. Miyamoto was seen smiling as he played against Reggie in a round of NBA Live 2008 for Wii(Reggie lost to Miyamoto by a score of 8-5.) He was even spotted playing the demo of "Skate" which isn't even scheduled to release on Wii. Looks like the overall attitude at Nintendo may be changing after all.

NINTENDO CONTINUES TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN CORE AND CASUAL PLAYERS

From Wii Fit to Flash Focus to Mario Kart, Nintendo Shows Everyone is a Gamer

SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 11, 2007 – The world used to be divided into two camps: gamers and non-gamers. In the first group: young men. In the second: everyone else.

Then came Wii and Nintendo DS.

The remarkable Wii Remote and touch screen and voice recognition of Nintendo DS removed the barriers to entry and put video games into the hands of young women, moms, dads and grandparents. Gamers now find they have a whole new population of people willing to join them in their gaming passion. At its media briefing today at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., Nintendo announced multiple new games and accessories designed to reinforce that bridge and further demonstrate everyone is a gamer.

"Games like Wii Sports and the original Brain Age proved anyone can pick up a video game system and immediately have fun," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We're building on that foundation with games and accessories appealing to our current fan base and drawing in even more new players."

New games and accessories not only demonstrate that Nintendo is not going to coast on its momentum, but they also show how the power and versatility of Nintendo's systems have only just begun to be explored. What might the future bring? These are the kinds of "what-if" questions firing the imaginations of consumers when Nintendo dares to explore them. For now, the following is a roundup of Nintendo's major announcements.

Wii  • Wii Fit: This experience builds on the active-play phenomenon started by Wii Sports. It comes packed with the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board (name not final) that measures users' actions in fun aerobic, toning and balance activities.      NINTENDO REVEALS INCOMPARABLE BREADTH OF UPCOMING GAMES FOR WII

Classic Franchises, Amazing Games and Cool Accessories Keep Wii on Top

SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 11, 2007 – Consumers take note: Cancel your vacations, postpone your weddings and skip your class reunions. New games for the record-selling Wii video game system continue to set new industry standards for fun and adventure, even as they draw new players into the ever-expanding world of Wii. Nintendo announced these new offerings for Wii today during its media briefing at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif.

"In less than eight months Wii has proved itself the video game system for everyone, and we're not letting up," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We're producing hit after hit after hit, supported by a long line of third-party publishers who have shifted their resources to help make Wii the most distinctive video game system in history."

Counting downloadable Virtual Console titles, Wii already boasts more than 150 games. By the end of the year, that number will climb to about 350 in the United States alone. Just check out what Wii has to offer:

Wii Fit: The active-play phenomenon started by Wii Sports now spreads to your whole body thanks to the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board (name not final), which comes packed with Wii Fit. The board is used for an extensive array of fun and dynamic activities, including aerobics, yoga, muscle stretches and games. Many of these activities provide a "core" workout, a popular exercise method that emphasizes slower, controlled motions. Family members will have fun staying active and talking about and comparing their results and progress on a new channel on the Wii Menu.

Mario Kart Wii (name not final): The new version of Mario Kart, due in early 2008, features new vehicles and lets players near and far compete using Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo's wireless gaming service. Mario Kart launches with the Wii Wheel (name not final), a steering wheel housing for the Wii Remote that brings new controls and challenges for veteran gamers, while making getting into a race easy and intuitive for newcomers.

Super Mario Galaxy: The latest masterpiece by legendary video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto puts a smile on the face of everyone who plays it. Until now, no game has matched the sheer fun and sense of delightful awe produced by the groundbreaking Super Mario 64. Using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, players navigate iconic hero Mario through a series of planets, each with its own gravity, chaotic challenges and power-ups. The game bursts through the screen in vivid artistic detail, and a second player can even provide some assistance along the way. It blasts off Nov. 12.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Nintendo's all-out smash-or-be-smashed franchise remains one of the most highly anticipated games of the year. Its predecessor became the No. 1 selling game of all time on Nintendo's previous console. Super Smash Bros. Brawl ups the ante with new characters, new moves and new arenas. The game smashes into North American stores Dec. 3.

Wii Zapper (name not final): This new accessory combines the accuracy of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in a single housing for a new experience for first-person shooters and targeting games. Players can hear the sounds of battle through the Wii Remote speaker when it is incorporated into the Wii Zapper. It arrives on store shelves later this year, packaged with Nintendo-developed software that shows off its versatility. The Wii Zapper also will be used with a host of third-party games, including Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles from Capcom, Ghost Squad from Sega and Medal of Honor from Electronic Arts.

Check Mii Out Channel (name not final): Launching in 2007, this free new channel builds on the huge phenomenon of Wii owners creating fun caricatures of themselves, their friends and celebrities. The two main components of the free channel include an area where users can post Miis they have created to let others vote on their artistic abilities, and a competition element that lets users test their skills to create the most accurate likeness of individuals or other themes suggested by Nintendo. The Check Mii Out Channel joins the lineup of cool channels on the Wii Menu, which includes the Internet Channel, the Everybody Votes Channel and the Forecast Channel, among others.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption: This final chapter of the Metroid Prime trilogy introduces unmatched first-person controls by letting players use the Wii Remote as an arm cannon for a feeling of complete immersion. Heroine Samus travels between planets to stop her nemesis, Dark Samus, from corrupting them. All the while Samus fights the spreading Phazon that is taking over her body while giving her incredible powers. It launches Aug. 27.

More to Come: Other Nintendo titles launching this year for Wii include Mario Strikers Charged (July 30), Donkey Kong Barrel Blast (Oct. 8), Battalion Wars 2 (Oct. 29), Endless Ocean (Oct. 29) and Fire Emblem (Nov. 5).

Third-Party Support: Third-party publishers are racing to see who can put the most resources behind Wii. By the end of the year, about 100 new Wii games will hit stores. EA brings Boogie and EA Playground, as well as online action for its Madden NFL and FIFA Soccer franchises; Mario and Sonic team up for the first time ever in Sega's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games; Sega shows off dreamy aerial acrobatics with NiGHTS Journey of Dreams; Activision jams with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock; Namco Bandai puts the battle blade into players' hands with SoulCalibur Legends; Disney Interactive belts out High School Musical: Sing It!; Square Enix brings Dragon Quest Swords in early 2008 – and that's just a taste of what's to come.
