TalkBack / Re: No EA Games Currently in Development for Wii U

You forgot the best part! IGN's article on the story also had this to say:

...Kotaku reports that Brown says the “early run of EA games on Wii U represented EA delivering on its E3 2011 partnership.”

I was able to understand your sentence's meaning -- only its syntax was confusing.

I see you are pretty proud of your little "diving team" joke. It's OK, though -- I'm sure all Toronto fans' spirits are soaring at the moment since their team finally has a sliver of relevancy after seven years.

I'm usually a fan of your work on this podcast, Scott, but playing that annoying, god-awful Chelsea Dagger song at its close is damn near unforgivable!

I have never been so happy to be wrong than I am about the Canucks right now.

This sentence makes my brain hurt.

TalkBack / Re: Top 10 3DS Games: Two Years And Counting
« on: May 03, 2013, 10:02:39 PM »
Honestly, there's a number of reasons I think 3D Land is trash, and I'm going to stand by them. The control scheme is atrocious, the levels further promote this ridiculous idea of 3D Linear Platforming, which is just broken by nature. The difficulty curve is nonexistent and the choice of adding Shadow Mario to the endgame of the Secret Levels was a bland and boring choice. The visuals are even less charming than New Super Mario Bros., the Tanooki suit is overused and cheaply so, there's a run button, the physics feel stiff, and the music sucks.

I get that it's all my opinion, but I honestly don't see how people could enjoy such a short, uninspired, and obviously rushed game. It's like, everything wrong with modern Mario in one game.

Interesting reasons. What is it about the controls that you don't like? I know you mention disliking the choice of implementing a "run" button, but to me it seems like a smarter design choice that would better fit the more limited movement of the circle pad. Other than that, I don't remember it controlling much different than other 3D Mario platformers.

I'm not sure that I understand how 3D linear platforming is broken by nature. I'd say it works quite well in the Galaxy games. Both games require you to make it from point A to point B while avoiding or overcoming obstacles. Comparatively, I agree that it doesn't reach the level of imagination found in some other 3D Mario games, and sure, the music could have been better, but I wouldn't call it uninspired, as the levels still exhibit a lot of creativity. The Shadow Mario mechanic was tacked on and one of the less enjoyable aspects of the game, but as far as it being short, it took me about 16 hours to 100% my save file.

I found Super Mario 3D Land to be enjoyable to the very end, and while not extremely hard, the challenge did ramp up as I progressed through the game. Everyone's experience is different, though. You may not think it's great and its presentation may not knock your socks off, but I don't honestly see how people can deny that its a good game. To refer to Super Mario 3D Land as "trash" gives me the impression that that person only plays "AAA" titles and that Super Mario 3D Land would therefore merely be "AA".

To be honest, this wouldn't bother me so much if EA would outright admit that their relationship with Nintendo is pure crap. It's insulting as all hell when they try to pass something like "However, we have a strong partnership with Nintendo" off as truth.

Well, now I'm definitely O-U-T out!

I wonder if other surprises await, or if they're getting them out of the way early?

What's tomorrow's selection? Dress to Play: Cute Witches?

Well, we all lost - nobody picked Layton.

I'm still counting myself in, because perhaps Layton was the wildcard that replaced Ocarina of Time 3D.

However, I expect that theory to be destroyed by tomorrow.

Also, totally on board with the lack of enthusiasm for Mario 3D Kart. I'm currently trying to work my way through the single player races, and I never find myself actually wanting to play it.

Super Mario 3D Land, on the other hand, was enjoyable as all hell.

10. Pushmo

Let me see if I can precall the rest of the top 10: Luigi's Mansion, Theatrhythm, Kid Icarus Uprising, Mario 3D Land, Fire Emblem, Crashmo, VVVVVV, Mutant Mudds/Mighty Switch Force (but not both) and Ocarina 3D. Sadly, my dark horse pick of Virtue's Last Reward will be an honorable mention at best.

I think you probably nailed it, Shaymin. The only one I could see getting left out is Ocarina of Time, but what would take its place? Maybe RE: Revelations?

The one theory that I had hoped to be true was that both of the Oracle games took place at the end of different timelines, and that the conclusion of those games resulted in the split timeline once again converging. How that might exactly be explained, I don't know, but if they could have done it with any two games, it would have been those two.

Well, the technology's certainly there. I have an Uncharted card game on my Vita that has asynchronous play like that, where one player can take their turn; send it to the other player; they make their move at any time; and so on.

Oh, so like Draw Something.

All I knows is that that screenshot of The Wonderful 101 makes me want it very much. I'm fine with waiting for that game if they are tweaking it to perfection.

It would be nice if the eShop had a few smaller releases to help tide people over, but even on there we are seeing some ports.

Thanks for the tips. I'll say that a lot of that information is definitely not apparent in the game, and I've played it for a few hours now.

Yeah, it took me a little while to learn all that myself, and I'm sure there's more I have yet to glean. To be honest, I'm not all that surprised since, as you mentioned, the game has no tutorial and drops you right into the world.

I thought I would help to clarify a few things about Need for Speed: Most Wanted U. Some of this information can be picked up from the tickers on the loading screens, or from the in-game manual.

1. Cops don't randomly pursue you. If you speed past them, hit them, etc. then they will give chase. If you drive by them slowly you will likely be just fine.

2. There is a consequence to getting "Busted" by the cops. Each pursuit is sort of treated as it's own event, for which you can earn additional SP (Speed Points, which help to unlock "Most Wanted" races. See number 4.) The longer the pursuit, the more SP you can earn. However, if you are "Busted", you lose all of the SP you had accumulated.

Also, if you are tired of the cops pursuing you, you can always use the control pad to access the easy drive menu and jump into a race, avoiding the pursuit.

3. I found the turning issue is easily solved by drifting -- tapping the brake while in a turn to begin sliding. From there, it takes a little practice to finesse it.

4. It is possible to win races with every different car (yes, even the Ford Raptor). Every car has its own set of 5 or so race events. These can be found by accessing the Easy Drive menu. By using different cars to complete their individual events, you will unlock upgrades for that vehicle.

The only races in which you choose which car to drive are the "Most Wanted" races. These races are unlocked as you gain more SP, and feature the faster cars in the game. It may not be possible to win these races using every car (certainly not without upgrading), but yes, you will likely want to unlock faster cars before attempting some of these.

And yes, somewhere someone at Criterion is laughing their ass off because of his decision to put some of these cars in this game (I'm looking at you, Ford Raptor).

There are two consoles launching later this year. So unfortunately, I don't think Nintendo have a lot of time to work with here. I think we're rapidly reaching an inflection point where those people who have not yet bought a Wii U, but were open to the prospect of buying one, are now beginning to look at what Nintendo's system offers in comparison to it's soon to be competitors. Honestly? It's not a flattering comparison.

Until they find out the next Xbox won't play used games and the PS4 is over $500.  Then suddenly the Wii U looks a whole lot better.

I agree, Luigi dude. So many people seem to be putting all of this faith into these future unreleased systems from Sony and Microsoft, when there is no telling how they will actually function or be priced. Neither Sony or Microsoft have spotless records, and it seems to me that people seem to forget that when discussing Nintendo's mistakes (and vice versa).

Personally, I won't have any problem waiting for new forthcoming games because there are many titles being released on the Wii U that I haven't played before. I'm currently playing through NFS: MWU, then I'm moving onto Batman: Arkham City, Darksiders II, and then Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I'm also someone who will play through a game until completion (usually 20 - 40 hours), so I don't find myself buying a new game every week. I hope that those who say they don't have enough games to play on the Wii U are at least giving different kinds of games a chance. However, if they are only waiting for Nintendo-developed games to play, then they shouldn't be surprised since Nintendo usually only releases one or two games per quarter on a given system anyway, no?

20
This game is sounding better and better. I'm even more tempted to pick this up at $50. I'll tell you what, Square-Enix: Ideally, I would love to pay $30 for this, so why don't we split the difference and call it $40?

21
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what becomes of Nintendo's relationship with Platinum Games. The Wonderful 101 is looking, well, wonderful!

TalkBack / Re: Embracing the Digital Future on the 3DS
« on: April 01, 2013, 03:04:44 PM »
Unlike many others out there, I'm not opposed to buying digital copies of games because their may be issues with the DRM, or because I can't trade it in when finished. The main reason I don't buy digital copies of games is because as much as I love playing them, I love collecting them. I love removing the plastic wrap. I love flipping through the instruction manual. I love the way all of the games look lined up on my shelf. I just love the tangability of a physical copy.

I've only traded in a handful of games in my lifetime (never out of necessity), but for the most part I keep my games. More recently, games have been moving in a more digital direction (digital manuals is actually one thing that I applaud because it makes sense), but I will still buy a physical copy if that is an option. If a game is only released digitally, I'll have no problem buying it that way.

23
Wow, this game is pretty sweet.

I barely know what I'm doing half of the time and my driving is terrible, but exploring the city, finding jackspots and crashing through billboards is all kinds of stupid fun!
