Nintendo Console Discussion / Ducktales: Why did no one tell me?
« on: June 15, 2013, 09:26:27 PM »
Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I just saw the trailer for the Ducktales remake for the first time.

I have not been this pumped for a game since I saw the initial trailer for Twilight Princess.

Then I saw it was not on the 3DS...oh. Well I was going to get a Wii U eventually, but I would rather it have been for the 3DS. I can't get a U until later this year or early next. I was even hoping for a redesign to release in time for me to pick it up. But this. This may push me to get one sooner. Who'd have thought a redesign of a 25 year old game would be my system seller?

Is anyone else as pumped as I am for it?

Is anyone excited about this? Haven't seen anything on it until my wife discovered the news.

It is surely only a matter of time before the 2nd title will be on everything that uses electricity. I own multiple versions of the original. What system or device is everyone hoping to acquire it on? I find I prefer using a stylus for the game over anything else so if the 3DS one is not gimped like the DSiWare version was I may bite on that one.

I started this conversation in the rumor thread and wanted to continue it properly in it's own area.

I believe that after the N64 era Nintendo has seemingly chosen to stifle its creativity in limiting the release and the scope of their new IP. Sure, there are a few new ideas; yet Nintendo seems to either limit the scope of their newer ideas when with the proper support of their creators these IPs could easily become as big as Mario, Zelda and Pokemon

I've included the original conversation here from the rumor thread and hope to hear some more thoughts from y'all on the matter.

I'm shocked they didn't include Miis in Brawl. It just makes too much sense to include what have to be the most significant new characters Nintendo's created in close to a decade.
It's gotta be longer than a decade. I don't think Olimar and his Pikmin can't really count as significant considering Nintendo regularly ignores the series.

It is kinda sad that they are only really making one new IP or so a generation: Pikmin on the Gamecube and Miis on the Wii. Even in the established franchises they haven't made many new additions. The biggest new Mario character I can think of is Rosalina. Before that all I recall is Tingle and Waluigi in the N64 generation and one of those are just a clone.

Any other 'new' characters in the Mario world have bit roles and are tossed away after a brief cameo. And great new characters like Midna in Zelda are forgotten.

I'm hoping my memory is failing me but what else has Nintendo brought to us (and kept with us) since the time of the N64 in terms of new IPs and characters? Pikmin, Rosalina, Tingle and Miis seem to be it.

I don't count games they choose to abandon in Japan because they are just that: abandoned.

Animal Crossing was in that span, and I think a character based on that would work well. There's also Custom Robo, which is fairly obscure, but has seen two releases outside of Japan.
Dillon's Rolling Western! Nintendog! Dr. Kawashima! Dr. E Gaad!

and the new Hotness... MONITA!

No, I mean Custom Robo, but Chibi Robo is a good suggestion too. Forget about Smash Bros., though, just give me a new Custom Robo game for 3DS.

Animal Crossing was in that span, and I think a character based on that would work well. There's also Custom Robo, which is fairly obscure, but has seen two releases outside of Japan.

You mean CHIBI ROBO! perfection!
No, I mean Custom Robo, but Chibi Robo is a good suggestion too. Forget about Smash Bros., though, just give me a new Custom Robo game for 3DS.
Forgot about those, but they do seem to not fit the role of 'major' IPs. They could easily become major IPs if Nintendo would cultivate them more but Nintendo treats them more like inconvenient necessities than big releases. If it isn't Mario, Zelda, Pokemon or their 'flavor of the season' IP like Metroid or Kirby they don't make a huge deal about it.

In terms of games:
>Animal Crossing was an N64 title.
>Custom Robo hasn't seen anything since the early DS title with no Wii title. Also an older series dating back to N64 (earlier?)
>Chibi Robo's last game was a Wal-Mart exclusive which limited its availability and exposure.
>Fire Emblem skips every other title in its release schedule. Also dates back to pre-N64.
>Nintendo owns the IP rights for Eternal Darkness and it's game mechanics yet we have not seen a sequel, spiritual or otherwise.
>The 'Rainfall Three' had to be forced here with the help of Non-Nintendo forces.

All those characters you mentioned (with the possible exception of Dr. E Gaad) would fall under the label of minor characters.

I feel my original point still stands that Nintendo has not produced much, if any, meaningful new significant IP since the N64 era. They have the potential for it, but they regularly choose to ignore those underdeveloped IPs.

Thoughts? Disagreements? Has my memory failed to recall some important IPs of the past decade or so? Or has Nintendo truly begun to stagnate? I didn't see it that way until recently. Perhaps the management is getting too old and until they step down we will be stuck in this recycled loop.

I'm fond of Pyramid brand brews. I especially like their Apricot Ale. Just tried their Fall seasonal red ale and I'm liking that too.

The one I'm really looking to try is known as Men's Room Original Red. It's named after a local radio show in the Seattle area.

All six episodes are going to be released in theaters in 3-D. Are you stoked? Frustrated? Not in the least bit interested?

I personally would like to go to opening night of all six just for the crazy environment and group experience. I also hope he tinkers a bit with the series again. I know some rumors of edits for previous post-prequel releases of the original trilogy talked of editing in extra stuff to better connect with the prequels and I would be down with seeing that happen for this version (things like an Anakin flashback to when Palpatine electrocuted Mace Windu during the final battle on the Death Star 2 in Return of the Jedi). Just so long as Han shoots first (and no new Jar Jar scenes) ;) .

NWR Feedback / So what happens to 'taboo' topics if laws change?
« on: September 21, 2010, 02:03:50 AM »
A conversation and a locked thread in the funhouse got me wondering. If an illegal substance like marijuana is nationally legalized in the USA will it not be a forbidden topic anymore? I'm assuming yes.

But then I started thinking about some other matters like homosexuality. Is that going to remain banned until an actual amendment is made to the constitution or is that one going to remain banned no matter what?

Was just wondering. Not necessarily just for those two matters but in general I was wondering what would and could happen.

NWR Mafia Games / Eternal Mafia Finale: The Darkness Comes
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:59:50 PM »
The atmosphere was tense. Nerves were on end. Sanity was slipping out of their midst. The heroes had fought long and hard on their journey and many had been lost along the way. The Darkness crept ever closer but the few remaining held on resolute. Suspicions were high as it was plain that there were spies among them. But who was a difficult puzzle to solve.

Maxi, custodian to the Tome of Eternal Darkness, had gleaned many vital clues from within it's bindings of flesh and bone. The others knew they could count on him and here, at their final hour, they turned to him yet again. For they were at an impasse. Vudu and Plugabugz were the current leads to their traitor and the vote was not going through. They turned to Maxi to break this critical vote. Maxi looked from one to the other, turned his head as if pondering the issue, then slowly uttered two syllables: That. Guy.

Sundoulos' gut knotted. He had been sure Maxi would side against Plugabugz. After all they had discussed last night what they were going to do today at the vote. Something wasn't quite right... as he stared at Maxi he noticed a swift and subtle movement on his eyes. He had a second pair of eyelids flicking open and closed! His eyes were not human. "You've been playing us all for fools." He gasped. "How long have you infected him?Mop it up, we should flee."

"I have infected him long enough to ensure victory for my mighty lord," It hissed.

"Mop it up, quickly," entreated Sundoulos, "Help me cast a magickal spell of escape, these are all enemies save for you and me now. Perhaps we can live to fight another day." Hearing no sound from behind him where Mop it up had stood he turned with great fear in his heart. There lay Mop it up, neck clearly broken. Behind her body stood a laughing Insanolord, revealed now as the Corrupt One himself. "YOU!" Sundoulos cried.

He turned again and found Apdue as well, transforming into his true form of the Vampire. He turned again to the controlled Maxi and plead to him, "Surely there is some sense f your will in there, if you can overcome the Bonethief within you me may still have a chance."

"There is no Maxi. All that remains is his HIDE!" And on the word 'hide' the bonethief burst forth, destroying Maxi.

Sundoulous realized that he was alone in the world. A chill came over him. He was surrounded. Giving in to despair, he looked to the heavens and let of a final prayer. The Darkness came. The Darkness covered. The Darkness consumed. The Darkness was complete.

NWR Mafia Games / Eternal Mafia Day V
« on: September 15, 2010, 06:37:22 PM »
After suffering from the group loss of sanity, the heroes began to return to their senses. As they took inventory of their status it was found that the hero Stevey was dead. His body was found nearby fried to a magickal crisp by the powers of Chattur'gha. He was ID'd by the various pictures of 'Hawtness' scattered around his body.

Finally one of the heroes came forward who had received a vision while reading the Tome of Eternal Darkness. He said that there was another among them who was not their ally nor an ally of the enemy. This person had been killing off others for some other ancient's plans. This ancient had remained hidden for eons and only Mantorok was aware of his existence beyond the suspicions of the others. This ancient was the wielder of the yellow magick seen before and was known as Tup'pomi. This ancient's servant was the one named VUDU!

All turned to stare and the one known as Dennis 'Vudu' Dyack. "Yes, I serve another. Long has it been since stone and ink, tongue and paper uttered her name. She is the true master of this world and all within it. Her and Mantorok are like two sides to a coin; One is the lord of chaos, the corpse god they call him. The other, she is know as the Ancient of Balance, who always strives to ensure all existence is in parity. Your quest as well as that of the rouge Chattur'gha and his lap dog Pious must be stopped at all costs. For the sake of the Balance I shall now destroy your flesh and bone."

At this he transformed into a great and mighty beast of epic proportions.

All of the heroes banded together to take down the monstrosity. The crazed servant of Tup'pomi. But he was powerful. Even some of the forces of Pious charged out of the shadows to aid in the defeat as they had found a common enemy. The fallen spirits of the Hero's of Light came forth to lend strength to the heroes as they fought with bravery and valor.

In the end the maniacal servant Vudu fell. As the dust settled the heroes eyed those servants of Chattur'gha present. Unsure what would happen now. They drifted of into the shadows hauntingly whispering "This changes nothing, you all must die for His Will..."

After discovering a page of the Tome of Eternal Darkness, the band of heroes discovered that they could use it to warp to the respective land and carry on the fight against the Darkness there. They appeared in the great Oublie Cathedral. They began searching for clues that could help them discover who was behind the killings in their midst.

Toruresu, the great High Defender, thought he was on to a lead. He had gone off to meet a custodian to the cathedral who claimed to have information about a secret cult operating within the church but discovered the man dead in the bell tower. Sensing the killer was still in the room he drew his great Ram Dao, a middle eastern broadsword, and began searching the room. Sounds of many small creature's claws scrabbling across the surface of the bells emanated from all around him. Suddenly a Horror burst out from the shadows and charged and Toruresu with a mighty roar. He muttered an magickal incantation to imbue his sword with energy but the monster had drained him of much of his manna. After a few agonizing seconds strands of blue energy sputtered to life across the Ram Dao's surface. Toruresu allowed a quick smirk of assurance before charging straight for the monster. In one sure stroke he lopped off two of the beast's three heads. The Horror was quick to retaliate and with a powerful swiping blow hurled Toruresu back into the largest of the bells. the Defender was able to reposition himself midair and used the bell as a launching surface to catapult up and above the beast. As he arced back down he positioned his mighty blade straight down and with a mighty yell, blue light flashing like and angel of doom, cleaved through the Horror's final head and continued on down the body splitting the beast in two as the Ram Dao buried itself in the stone floor nearly half of the blade's length.

Standing up in triumph, Toruresu abruptly felt a sharp pain in his back as a Roman gladius burst from his chest. He collapsed to the floor in shock. He looked up dazed; his vision quickly fading to black to see...Pious, the one and only Corrupt One, leader of the forces of Chattur'gha, gloating over his failing flesh and bone.

Meanwhile, the rest had gathered to put a vote against ones they thought were enemies in disguise. By a near unanimous vote, Nickmitch was determined to be Corrupt. No one stopped ponder why he put up no extraordinary fight. If someone like a Bonethief or Pious himself was about to be convicted there would have been a desperate fight like none had other seen. Instead, he just pleaded he was innocent and wept as he was drug off and put to death. Everyone had been so sure he was guilty of deception due to his frequent absences. But when no disguise disappeared to reveal an enemy and no hidden monster was found inside of him the others realized they had made a grave mistake.

What old, abandoned or misused game IP would would buy and revive if you could afford it?
What is wrong or needs changing about the IP?
Would you found a new dev studio to head the task or would you hire a current one?
Would you start with a reboot of the first game, a continuation of the series with an entirely new title, a re-releasing and remastering of the old titles for current distribution channels (Steam, WiiWare/Virtual Console, XBLA, etc.) or something else entirely?

"Confound this blasted piece of magick possessed technology!" Shouted grumpy old Maximilian Roivas. He was slapping the poor hapless gamecube as it had yet again frozen on him while he was playing a psychological thriller game.

"Oh, let it alone, it's not going to start working again because you hit it," Dr. Edward Roivas muttered from the table as he poured over some ancient documents.

"I'll bet it's because you suck at this game," chuckled Michael Edwards, "Move over, it's my turn."

"I really think we should be doing something more practical than playing with those fancy electronics," Edward began rubbing his temples, "At the rate we are going the Ancients will have passed away from old age before we find anything out."

"I still say we should destroy this purple cube of games," spat out Maximilian, "certainly something like this is possessed of dark magick and it will surely murder us in our sleep".

"No, it won't. It is an inanimate object powered by electricity. It cannot do anything outside of what it was designed to do"

"And what if it was designed to kill us in our sleep? What then, Doctor?"

Young Alex Roivas' scream broke the old men's squabble. "Oh no! They'redead!"

The men ran out of the room and found several others already gathered around two bodies being laid on the floor: Khush and Super, the Psychologist and the Investigator respectively.

Through some unknown force, all of the heroes who fought valiantly against the eternal darkness have returned to the Roivas Mansion alive after so many years. It quickly becomes apparent that somehow the ancient Chattur'gha is back and causing trouble again in a quest for total power. They also realize through a vision of Mantorok that amongst them are several traitors including, somehow, the thought defeated Pious Augustus, right hand of the evil ancient. It is quickly determined that those gathered must determine who among them were not who they claimed to be and eliminate them.

24
Time for a new round of Mafia! This one will be Eternal Darkness themed.

It will be on the simpler side since we've had several recent games on the complicated side. Days will end at 11AM PST and the new day will begin at Noon PST since I work nights and the times I get off can vary wildly. Plus I believe that will allow Europeans to play as well. Signups will run until the 5th/6th-ish and the game will start on the 8th9th.
Long ago, before flesh and bone walked the earth in mortal toil, the ancients ruled all. Three great ancients became entrenched in a fight of control. These were Chattur'gha, Xel'lotath and Ulyaoth. The great ancient Mantorok took all three and sealed them away to keep them from destroying the world with their war. It was not till millennia later that one ancient, Chattur'gha, reached out to one Pious Augustus. When lured forth, the centurion was corrupted by the essence of Chattur'gha and reborn as his right hand in this world. Going forth Pious crippled Mantorok and began to move forth to release his god. Due to the gravity of the situation Mantorok, known also as the 'Corpse God', brought forth from the great beyond all of the previous heroes of light to the ancient Roivas mansion.

On the Ancient Chattur'gha's side (Mafia):
>Corrupt One (Godfather) - Played by Pious in the game, he is the mouthpiece and right hand of Chattur'gha. He comes up in all searches except for the Librarian's as a Townie. If he is to be lynched by the Townies, the Greater Guardian will choose to make a move for power and destroy the essence allowing Pious to be killed. Then the Greater Guardian will become the Godfather.
>Greater Guardian (Godfather's Bodyguard) - They are guarding the essence that dominates their Ancient. The Godfather cannot be killed until the Mafia's Greater Guardian is eliminated and the essence that protects him seized. Once it is, then the Godfather is vulnerable.
>Bonethief - The Bonethief picks one player and 'infests' them. Their vote is changed every night. The Bonethief cannot leave the player of it's own volition. If either the Defender or the Psychologist choose to use their powers on an infested human they then can choose to drive away the Bonethief from the person. If it is the Psychologist then the person will live free for two turns but due to the damages will then die. If the Defender finds the infested person then he just kills the infested person and the Bonethief. If both find the infested person at once then the Bonethief is destroyed and the player will not die from the sustained wounds.
Further notes on Bonethief
It takes control of the person's voting behind the scenes. It basically gets to choose that person's vote each night it controls the victim. The infected player can still post votes and act normal, but their vote is changed by the bonethief during the night actions like a regular 'vote changer' role would do. The infected player CANNOT reveal their status in the main threads or else they will be instantly killed by the bonethief as it bursts out of the player's body to flee and avoid being caught, so the bonethief's identity remains anonymous. They can tell people in PM's.

Yes, the bonethief is stuck in that person until the psychologyst and/or defender decide to act on it. I was originally going to make the purging actions automatic but I have decided to give the players the option of what to do. If the defender or the psychologist decide to use their powers on the infected player then they will receive a PM regarding the fact the person is infected. They can then choose to act to purge the player or wait until they can get the other person to help them out. Remember that if the psychologist tries to do it alone the player will only be free for two game days and then die and the bonethief will live. If the defender acts alone then the player and the bonethief will be killed. If both act together then the infected player will not die due to the bonethief and the bonethief is killed.

If the infected person is voted out then the bonethief bursts out of them and flees without being revealed to everyone.

This poses several options for the people of Light; if you have the manouvering room you can wait until the psychologist and the defender know each other and save the guy the best way together; the other options are available for various situations.

If there is a countdown for the recovered infected until death it goes like this: healed by both Light players night of day 3. Lives and votes day 4, lives and votes day 5. Dies immediately once day 6 is posted.

Also, the player who is the bonethief still gets their own vote. (I know some of these facts run contrary to the properties of the bonethief in-game but work with me, I'm playing with the continuity as is for Mafia's Sake)

 >Vampire - This creature can nullify one player's power each day. This means it can block kills, remove protections and bar the information gatherers from receiving any knowledge.

For the Mantorok side; The Gathering of Light (Townie side):
>Guardian of Light (Librarian) - This player is able to search the Tome of Eternal Darkness and search the souls of three players of their choosing. Their roles will be revealed to this player. Even the godfather role. They will find out what their status is and what role is causing that status. They will not find out who is causing these status issues unless that player is also named. They can request this information all at once or one at a time as they see fit by PMing me the requests.
>Clinical Psychologist (Vote changing role) - He is able to convince a player to change their vote to his choosing each night.
>High Defender (Traditional Doctor Role) - One of the strongest of the Chosen Ones. He can choose one player per night to defend from the machinations of the Corrupt One and his minions.
>Acolyte of the Light (Investigator) - This person is able to inquire of any other players roll once per day. They do so by PMing me. I will respond with the answer. Infested people will register as 'infested' but the person's original role and the name of the Bonethief will not appear when the infested person is searched.
>Chosen Ones (Regular Townies) -

One fights for Another Power:
>Agent of Balance: The Fallen Chosen (Murderer) - This person is a mystery. They serve some other 'higher power' other than the three embattled ancients. He seeks all other followers to cease existence. His attacks on the protected Godfather and other protected players will be rebuffed like any other attack. He is able to make one attack attempt per day.

Other rules and Notes:
Night actions can be submitted at any time. You can even post them ahead multiple days if you need to (that seemed to work out well before). Just be sure to specify which days the hits are for or else I will assume they are for the upcoming night. And please specify by mafia days (i.e. Mafia Day 1, 2, 3, etc.) if you send them in advance. I see this as being the easiest way to avoid confusion.

I assumed it was just because I had partial mod-powers so when I wasn't in the mafia boards the 'moderate' button disappeared, but it is still missing. Looking closer I realize that it is actually the button for 'buddy page'. It appears from time to time but other times it is missing. And when it is missing a refresh doesn't bring it back.
