Title: Bill Gates: If you let us buy Nintendo, we will..

To summarise, Bill Gates told "Weltwoche", that if Nintendo let MS buy them, they would do it immediately. Nintendo would never do that though, I believe MS has tried to buy Nintendo before and Nintendo said no way. Still amusing  though, could Microsoft be jealous?

Why wouldn't MS?  It's not like MS is short on cash or anything :0.

Everyone wants Nintendo...That's why everyone hates them so much... :\

It's like kids in primary school...Kids that are jealous of your stuff will say how stupid it is, yet will try and trade their stuff for it...

Pre this gen, nintendo was indeed in serious discussion, as was sega, with allowing microsoft to buy them.  Nintendo said no because they wanted to keep gamecube, microsoft refused.

There's a discussion about this on the Penny Arcade forum and some people actually think it's a good idea.  Yeah because buying out Rare worked so GREAT for Rare fans.  Some people have this idea that if MS bought Nintendo that Nintendo's output would be the same as before only on the Xbox.  Everyone with a brain knows that all it would do is allow MS to make Mario games and Nintendo would be merely a brand name.  You figure after history has shown us numerous times that whenever something like this happens it always completely kills the purchased company that people would know this is a bad idea.  Hell in the PC software industry MS buys companies just to kill off competing products.

And odds are all the really talented Nintendo people like Miyamoto would leave anyway.

The second Nintendo stops developping their own hardware, their software is going to suffer.  Nintendo would be stupid to sell the company.  Their problems aren't ones that can be directly solved through increased funding, so they have little to gain, and everything to lose.

Nintendo is too proud of a company to sell out like this. And yes if that would happen Nintendo would be assimilated into MS game studios just like rare.

Let's go down the list, shall we?

Bungie: Arguably their best purchase.  The only problem is that if they are not making Halo, they aren't making anything.

Rare: This should be their best asset, but for some reason they decided that the platform to on which to put their best stuff is the GBA.  On the Xbox horizon?  One mediocre game released, another game on the way, and a remake of a game that was released but 3 years ago.

Curlymonsters: Unfamiliar?  They made this game called Quantum Redshift, which I will admit it is a very decent F-Zero clone, even down to the "comic book" presentation which F-Zero had in 1991.  They were working on Quantum Redshift 2, which had all this neat stuff in it, but Microsoft didn't like it, so they pulled the plug.  On Curlymonsters.  Now imagine if they had that kind of power over a certain other game company, hm?

OddWorld Inhabitants:  Well these guys dropped of the face of the Earth, didn't they?  I seem to remember after their launch debut of Munch's Odyssee, their next game was a GBA game.  And I think there was some talk about the PS2...  But I can't be arsed to remember.  Anyway, it's all pretty much speculation and rumor as to what they and their illustrious leader Lorne Lanning have been up to, because they all but disappeared.

There are more companies MS owns, I think, but none of them have done anything worthwhile, I dunno, maybe those PGR2 guys (neat) and those guys that made Azurik and Nightcaster (blech).  But really, it doesn't look good for companies owned by MS, even if they get wads of cash, the turnout isn't exactly great.

I don't recall Oddworld Inhabitants being purchased, but only "rented" so to speak, with moneyhats...I think they are working on a PS2 game at the moment(omg another Oddworld game?  Who would have guessed?)

This was mentioned on CNN. It was a JOKE. The German reporter took it out of context.

" I don't recall Oddworld Inhabitants being purchased, but only "rented" so to speak, with moneyhats..."

Hmm. Maybe you are right.  They certainly acted like they were owned, though.

There are two kinds of people that think this would be a good idea:

1. Those that don't own Nintendo consoles and bash Nintendo for being too kiddy, but secretly would love to play Nintendo games.

2. A certain type of Nintendo fan that is more concerned with Nintendo being #1 than anything else. They figure that being homogenized with MS is the only way Nintendo could ever compete with Sony.

Gah, why are we even discussing this? We know this is never going to happen. Ever.

I know why. Not much game news during the summer.

It would suck actually because if they bought them they can team up with EA and give them the Zelda license.  That would be terrible.  MS should just give up on the console race and just partner up with Nintendo giving them money support and allowing them to put some of their games.

Good idea, I would rather see Nintendo taking over the Microsoft Xbox division than vice versa. They would whoop sony.

M$ couldn't even afford to buy Nintendo >_<.  Well technically, but Nintendo would be sold for far more than their net worth (11 billion USD), as they as a very profitable company.

If microsoft bought Nintendo it wouldn'y be a buyout like what happened with rare.  Microsoft would get out of making games, they'd still publish games from their children.  Nintendo would essiantially be a second party to whatever system microsoft has.  And nintendo would have to have a huge say in the system.  Most likely microsoft would be a figurehead and nintendo would control everything in the microsoft videogame lair.  Microsoft would love it because they would learn how to become profitable;seeing as nintendo is the only profitable hardware manufacturer in videogame history.
