In a recent interview with Eiji Aonuma, producer of the Zelda series, Spanish magazine Club Nintendo revealed that Zelda: Four Swords is in the works for the upcoming handheld.
EA: The Zelda team is already planning Four Swords for the Nintendo DS. This game will have a lot of connectivity and feature a lot of interaction between both screens. It will be interesting.
He certainly hinted at this game at GDC in his presentation and interviews, but now it is official. Mr. Aonuma also discusses the new GameCube Zelda’s more realistic feel and graphical detail, as well as the possibilities of Link in a romantic relationship. I'm not surprised. Making realistic graphics is a pretty straight-foward process. Cel-shading involves a lot of programming on the side to make it work.
In essence realistic graphics are easier, but making them convincing is incredibly difficult. When a game tries to immitate real life, you judge it much more harshly because you're extremely accustomed to it. You notice every little discrepancy in a realistic style, which can really bring the whole thing down. With a cartoony style, such as Wind Waker's, we don't judge it nearly as harshly and accept it much more readily. If a realistic style isn't very detailed it can fall flat on its face- other styles don't suffer from this.

It won't need Gamecube/Revolution connectivity, because each player will have the second screen built in.
(hmm... what about using a DS emulator so more people could play? It wouldn't require a rom if it could talk wirelessly with the real DS and cartridge)

You're assuming it would be an MMO. The Four Swords would work really well online (though it would need a mic since co-operation is important). Zelda has been proven to be able to be done in a multiplayer format so in theory that could be expanded into online multiplayer.
Though if Zelda ever went online I would want it to be for a good reason and not just online for the sake of being online. I think a lot of people throw around "online" like they used to throw around "3D" as if making something online instantly makes it better. Mario Kart Online = natural addition to a multiplayer game. Mario Online = buzzword title with no thought on how that would even work.

I always figured a PSO type game would fit Zelda fairly well. Pick a race (goron/hyrulean/zora/etc.) a class (melee/ranged/caster/etc.) and battle through different levels with your friends picking up loot and snagging experience. Zelda has always had great battle mechanics; they could build on it a lot for online play.
That's a pretty abstract idea though. Four Swords online would be more sensible. And practical too, since they game wouldn't be ruined if one player had to leave (as happens so often in online games). Other players could take control of the odd-Link-out easy-peasy using formations.
