Title: Mario VS. DK Level Editor - Where is it?
Post by: Bartman3010 on May 26, 2004, 02:58:19 PM
After buying Mario VS. DK, I remember way back in the early days of development, they had a level editor on the Gamecube, and you could use the GCN to GBA link cable to download and play the level. Any idea what happened to that?

Wasn't that the big seller?

I don't think that was Mario Vs. DK.  It may have been an early build, but if my memory is working then I think it was Donkey Kong + or something with the level editor.

I believe Donkey Kong+ became Mario Vs DK.  I'm thinking they either cut the feature out because they didn't have time to implement it or they removed it because of how poorly connectivity was received at last year's E3.  It's also possible that the level editor was originally designed as a seperate Cube product that got canned because they figured it wouldn't sell.

The PGC preview said MvD would include an editor. Apparently those bastards cut it...

It's pretty sad that this was cut from the game, because it was one of the cooler connectivity ideas I have heard of, but having said that, I don't know how much fun playing through levels I made myself would be anyway...I mean, I'd know how all the puzzles work in advance!  I picked the game up yesterday, and it's pretty awesome.

Since there are cables for the PC to connect to the GBA you could probably make a program that runs on your computer and allows exchange via internet. Or perhaps that's a Japan-only feature that works with the SD adapter...

Because thats the way nintendo works. Introduce something in a game that will be a big selling point for the game, tout it in press releases and previews of the game, then either they pull it from the game, or it never existed in the first place. I'm going for the latter. Examples: Perfect Head in perfect dark, 64DD for the nintendo 64, internet capabilities on the gamecube, all bonds in goldeneye, oddjob and mayday in goldeneye, tons of other things in goldeneye, level editor for F-zero X, mario vs. DK level editor, Stop N Swap in Banjo-Tooie. Thats all I could think of just off the top of my head.

Erm, most of these things you listed were bad ideas or didn't work. Nintendo doesn't throw in half completed features that crash the game every time you use them. If something doesn't pass QA it gets scrapped.

Actually, didn't a few of those things actually come out? Some like the 64DD, F-Zero track editor, and online(both via the 64DD) only came out in Japan, though, i think.
