I think next gen MS shouldn't even release a system in Japan. They're just not going to go anywhere over there so they should concentrate on making the ultimate console for the North American market. Sure they would lose Japanese devs but nearly all Japanese Xbox games don't sell with the userbase anyway.

The thing that upsets me though is that at least the xbox is at least, all things considering, a mild success in the North American market, whereas the GC's userbase is far far more spread out. That is both a good and bad things because overall GC appeal goes down while Xbox is at least "cool" in the gigantic American market.

From a marketing point of view it's easy to see why M$ is making this move; Japan is a huge market, bigger even than the US one. If M$ can inject some awareness of the product, even if it's by making you look at a sexy girl first, their new console will have a higher chance of hitting it off there, and if they can acheive that, they'll take over the console business. Personally, I don't see it happening though. I've played a few japanese people on Xbox Live, but I bet there's way more on the PS2 Network. Xbox has already surpassed PS2 sales in the US by about 700,000 units and growing, there's no need for this kind of advertising in that market.

Look at the hardware chart. X-Box may be keeping up in America, but it is being killed so badly in Japan that it doesn't matter.

Yeah, as you can see from that link, Xbox is being destroyed in the Japanese market, which is why M$ is trying to raise that market's awareness of the current product before they launch the next one so they can try to contend with Nintendo and Sony on their own ground. I still don't see it ever happening though... Ninty and Sony pwn Japan
