Title: Sony and Microsoft at E3
Post by: ruby_onix on May 11, 2004, 02:50:31 PM
With all the buzz about the NDS and "realistic Zelda" for Nintendo at E3, I figured we need to keep an eye on the other big happenings of E3.

Microsoft's Press Conference.

EA's making a few dozen XBox Live games.

Bungie showed some Halo 2.

"Online" is supposedly the wave of the future, with 1 million XBox Live units out there (and two million PS2 Network Adaptors).

The "Crazy Billionaires" market has become polarized by region, as Donald Trump has teamed up with Bill Gates to make fun of Sony's Kaz Hirai and Ken Kutaragi.

The XBox's Conker remake apparently got some attention by parodying Terminator 2.

And apparently Halo 2 (again) now has built-in Grand Theft Auto elements.

On the Sony side of things, the PS2 had a price drop, and is now $149. It looks like Sony's discontinuing the Network Adaptor bundles, so they're making them the same price as the regular PS2, while supplies last, which is kinda like an additional price drop. Of yeah and, Sony apparently thinks they're gonna sell 200 million PS2s now because of the price drop. And IGN-PS2 apparently thinks a GameCube sells for $149.

The PSP got it's hardware specs revealed again, but they still don't wanna say how much it's gonna cost. Sony's convinced Square to release FF Advent Children on the PSP's disk format, as well as DVD. And there's a new picture of the hardware design.

But more interesting than that PSP "news" is that the first PSP games were revealed.

Hmm... there's a PSP port of Ape Escape. A new Syphon Filter title. A Dynasty Warriors.

Wipeout, Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, and a Ridge Racer for racing games.

An "old school" Breath of Fire RPG and a Darkstalkers fighting game (and even IGN-PS2 seems concerned that SCEA won't allow them in the USA, for being "too 2D").

And apparently a blantatly-obviously ripped-off "Metroid Prime killer".

Oh yeah and, elsewhere on IGN's new PSP section, they mentioned that there were some ultra-breif hints of a possible Metal Gear Solid of some sort for the PSP (some sort of wireless-networking multiplyer version).

Feel free to post any more news you dig up over the next few days!

A. halo bites unreal tournament 2004 is so much better.
B. the psp WILL GET MASSACRED compared to the DS.  The ds is going to be amazing
C. 2 words "Adult Link".
D. microsofts biggest thing was halo 2.  you got to be kidding me.
E. nintendo owned and will dominate the handheld and hopefully the console market this year.

" Sony and microsoft had NOTHING even comparable to show then what nintendo had. "

another fan boy has spoken so it must be true. LOL, get real buddy.

Imo the biggest news of the show was Ea's strong support of LIVE, this IMO will sell x-box's in a big way. Many will say that this is crap and that EA's games blow, and it may very well be true, however, they sell like hotcakes and will sell even better with LIVE capabilities.

" halo bites unreal tournament 2004 is so much better."

LMAO, sure it does.

I actually don't enjoy Halo that much. It might have something to do with the fact that I played the crap out of it at my friends house when it first came out. Although I prefer Call of Duty and Battlefield 1942 for my FPS fix.

Here's an interesting opinion of gameindustry.biz on the matter......

Comment: The Battle Of Los Angeles
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?section_name=pub&aid=3464

They seem to be totally unimpressed by MS's presentation, mainly because of the lack of surprises and actual news.
The funny thing is GI.biz always seemed to me a little pro-xbox biased...

get real?  are you kidding me? have you seen the DS? its going to freaking own. ontop of that they showed screens of metroid and of a new adult link.  Tell me what the box had? xbox live is nothing new of course theres going to be more titles coming our for it.  Ontop of that halo is absolute garbage, microsoft hyped it up therefore eb games hyped it up therefore teenagers hyper it up and its nothing more then a good fps.  you want an amazing fps? play ut2k4 thats a good fps.  as for the ps2 and the "psp"  Nintendo already has the handheld market.  I think it will sell like how the gamecube sold compared to the ps2

Sorry Canuck but its true

What did MS have? Halo 2...Meh...a mediocre FPS.

What did Sony have?...the PSP...an overrated, overpriced, port machine, which wasn't even playable.  Yeah that really steals the show...riiiiiiiiight

But Nintendo had the games, the previews, the DS, which was playable to boot, and it had Reggie!

Yay for fanboys! Like it or not, Halo 2 is going to be great. Maybe that's why it's most wanted on Gamestats . And I like how you're calling it a mediocre FPS before even playing it.

Unless we're speaking about a different game, it's totally beyond me why Halo sold as well as it did. A game that consists of running through repetitive concrete rooms (okay, sometimes terrain, but it's not like that makes any difference) and killing everything that moves. I thought that formula died with the release of Half-Life in '97 or something. 16 players, vehicles, tactical combat? BFD, even Counterstrike had that. If CS isn't a good example, how about Codename: EAGLE, the precursor to Battlefield 1942? Unlike, say, Doom Halo isn't even fun to play (don't tell me "well, you have to go multiplayer". Hell, any game except GTA is better in multiplayer, so where's the point?).

But we're drifting off-topic. I hope MP:H or some other FPS for the DS gets hyped as a "seminal FPS". If Halo gets lauded for bringing LAN to consoles, the DS game should be lauded for bringing mouselook to consoles.  Really, that's more important than "whoa, so many people!". Oh, and where were the complainers that you'd have to buy four XBoxen, four TVs, sixteen controllers, four CAT5 cables, one 4-port switch and four copies of Halo (okay, okay, broadband access and a DVD burner) to play it properly? After all, people complained about the full multiplayer requirements of FFCC...

"DS game should be lauded for bringing mouselook to consoles"

LOL--guess you missed Mario Paint back on the Snes or overlooked the USB ports on the PS2.  :0

I also felt MS didn't have enough surprises at E3 myself, nothing like "whoa" or "holy crap".

As for the PSP, I love it--also love how idiots complain about prices when it's not even set.  And if you complaining about ports then the GBA or orginal GB would be utter crap as well.  Myself, I love playing on my portables (even though I don't go anywheres) :0.

The DS actually looked pretty good (performance wise with the MP Hunters demo), and nintendo finished it off with the New zelda but that's a year or so far.  RE4 continues to AWE me--mostly because Capcom is FINIALLY doing something new with the series.

My turn:

Sony failed to impress me with anything, and I was particularly disappointed with the PSP...Come on, it was even lauded as a handheld PS2, which is not why I buy a handheld...Buying completely new media to play the same games is not something that sits well on my stomach...And I hate "onrine"...

Microsoft didn't have anything either...Sure I'll probably get Halo 2, but strictly because it's a pretty fun co-op game...But it's hardly a 5 star game, and it shouldn't have been a game that everyone humps on, because the innovation just isn't there...Anything else, MS?  No?  :\

The only thing that MS had that impressed me was Fable...the problem is, I've already got enough RPGs to play and I don't see myself stopping FF XI any time soon.  (That game is soooo sweet)  As for the PSP, I really think part of what drives the gameboy to be so dominant is the fact that Nintendo keeps it cheap for parents to buy for kids.  As much as we all hate the Nintendo-kiddie debate, they sure as hell don't eliminate markets like the PSP is doing.  In theory the DS should slaughter it....

Halo 2 isn't even worthy of being spoken in the same breath as Half-Life 2

"Halo 2 isn't even worthy of being spoken in the same breath as Half-Life 2"

This statement shows me what an utter idiot you are.
Have you played either of these games?
I highly doubt it. So how can you pass judgement on which one is better? It is blind fanboyism that makes discussions like this completely pointless. Grow up already.

Everything shown about Halo 2 points to it being the same old thing as Halo, with a "fresh coat of paint" so to speak.

On the other hand Half-life 2 has been shown to be a total revamp of the original, and everything shown puts it ahead of Halo 2.

I agree with Cubecanuck how can you past judgement on games that you have never played.  I would certainly hope Half Life 2 has been totally revamped it's only 5.5 years old now...

i've played the original half-life and the original halo.  and i can honestly say half-life was ten times better.  and i'm looking forward to half-life 2 a lot more than i'm looking forward to halo 2.  the only thing i really liked about halo was the health/armor system, the weapon system, and the fact that you could map gernades to a seperate button that your regular weapon.  everything else was sub-par.

Please, do you honestly think the PSP is going to be inexpensive? I love how idiots pretend the PSP isn't going to be overpriced.

There is a HUGE difference between the SNES/NES -> GBA ports and the PS1/PS2 -> PSP ports. Two(Three in the case of the NES) generations if you can't be bothered to count.

Sony stated the GBP250 price at the first conference with those prototype images shown. GBP250 equals USD450, which is approximately the XBox launch price. Sony since has said they're going to take a loss, so it'll probably be bumped down to USD300 (as with the XBox).

LOL a port is still a port bud so I'm not following you there.  There's very little difference in SM4Advance and the orginal SMB3 besides the whole resolution.  SMA4 recieved an update touches & tweaks but it's very minor.  It's still the same game as it was on the SNES.

And the pricing, read that article again.  Deering is talking about Euro-pricing not the US or Japan.  In case you missed it, both Xbox and PS2 launche in europe with retarded exchange rates.  Both launched with 300pounds which was $150 more than the US.

i remember microsoft saying in press releases that this year's e3 would belong to rare.  while i admit i didn't follow the xbox lineup as much as i could have, i don't remember hearing anything huge about rare other than conker looks great.  did rare show any games besides conker?  did i miss something, or did microsoft shoot its mouth off and have nothing to back it up?

The latter. They might have shown some Kameo screens but Conker was the only playable Rare game (don't shoot me if this is wrong, I was half a world away from E3)

That would be correct...Rare didn't show anything... -___-

If you can't see the difference then you're either ignorant, or just a fan-boy. These games are OLD and the machines are older, some of which are no longer in production. The PS2 on the other hand is still in production and the games made for it can be found in copious quantities, and we'll probably have played most of them in the last few years! Everyone has a PS2. Few people outside of the more hardcore gamers have an NES or SNES(especially a working system).

And do me a favor. Don't call me "bud", pal.  I do not appreciate being patronized.

I don't give a flying flip what the PS2 and XBox came out at. And the very fact that Sony isn't doing anything to stamp out the price claims isn't exactly doing much for your argument. I know if I was releasing a piece of hardware I'd want everyone to know it is going to be $150 less expensive than what is being predicted.
Title: RE:Sony and Microsoft at E3

So what if it's older, it's the exact same freaking game that you paying $29.99 for?

And you can easily find SMB3 too--there's only 17+ million copies floating around in land fills or whatnot.

Why do people buy it then?  Well to play the games on a go--and that's the same reason why games like GT4 will sell on the PSP even though the gamers have it on the PS2.

And it's funny how you state stuff like it's two generations but you overlooked Metroid Prime Hunters.  Oops, guess you forgot about that.  If nintendo can port freaking games I don't see why Sony can't--:0.

Neither company is going to release price points until either the other company does or the system is close to release.

Citing GBA ports is pointless because the GBA, just like the PSP, is a home console-like portable. The DS isn't.

The difference between porting to DS and PSP is that the PSP can eat pretty much current games unaltered, while the DS requires chancges like a new control layout, new art assets (since it can't handle the stuff thrown at modern home systems). That's a 50% minimum remake right there.

Hm, how about one of those psychic+physics games that are becoming all the rage now, just that you apply your psychic powers with the stylus?

Sony and Microsoft had nothing to show that hasn't already been announced. Nintendo had Zelda, Metroid Prime 2, Tales of Symphonia, and Paper Mario 2, which just about sums it up for me.

Ok I know there are a ton of Nintendo fanboys on this forum since this is a Nintendo focused site, but seriously all three had decent showings.  MS had a lot of cool looking Live titles and now has EA for Live, Halo 2 was shown off (and to all you people thinking that MP2 or UT2004 are better, you really need to read up more on it and check out all of the reviews as many gaming sites gave it best of show this year).  I too, though, wished they would have announced more XBox 2 stuff though, but the truth is it is too early for new hardware in the XBox's life cycle and they didn't want attention taken away from their good line up for this year.  For Sony, they had some cool looking games, mainly MGS 3, which will kick some @$$ as well as other stuff.  PSP is the biggest announcement and while it does look like a cool and useful multimedia gadget, it is essentially a portable PSP with clie like features.  Not that I don't want one, but it just seems like a sheek consumer electronics device/pda with a ps2 built in.  I will still buy it, though.  Nintendo had a great showing this year, compared to last year which just plain sucked.  DS looks amazing, great gameplay potential, MP Hunters, the new Mario, and Mario 64x4 look sweet.  I just wish they would change the design a little or add an analog stick instead of digital pad which is a thing of the past and that they would make it a little smaller and cooler looking.  PSP definitely beats DS in cool looking appearance but software is another story I bet.  Overall, great E3 and a ton of stuff I want to buy for my PC, XBox, GameCube, PS2, GBA, as well as getting the DS and PSP for my collection.  I know I am gonna get a lot of criticism for this, but Halo 2 hands down was my fav part of the show.  If you have never played the original over XBox connect or on pc and dont understand the nuances of halo and how it controls, then you just dont know what you are missing out on.  Both single player campaign and online will rock!
