Title: Where you from/ what it's famous for.
Post by: joeamis on April 19, 2004, 05:39:40 PM
I never got to know anyone on here that much so I don't know all about where everyone is from so I figured we could let everyone who doesn't know know, and also state what your state/province/city/etc is famous for.
I'm from Connecticut, U.S. famous things from CT include: - Subway started here - The WWE started here (not that i hold that in high regard lol) - The first helicopter or atleast one of the first

I was born in South Dakota. It's famous for the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse.
I then moved to California- I don't think I need to say anything more.
Then I moved to Okinawa, Japan, site of a major World War 2 battle. People would find live landmines all over the place.
Finally I moved to Kansas, where I live now. Kansas is home the first shopping mall ever, as well as people like Kirstie Alley and Barrie Sanders (I think). The creator of Dennis the Meance also said once it was set in Wichita Kansas, where I live specifically. Oh, and the BTK (bound - torture - kill) is a resident of Wichita- he's one of the creepiest serial murderers you'll ever heard about (and may have actually already heard about- it was national news for a little while). Otherwise, there's not much.

Louisiana. Cajun food, jazz, Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras, awesome seafood (dunno if we're known for it, but it is damn good), Britney Spears, idiocy (I suppose), and eventually, me.
A more extensive list than I expected. My particular town, St. Francisville, is somewhat famous as a result of plantation homes and lots of history. Hordes of old people flock here all the time. Not really known on a national level, though.

I'm from Melbourne, Aussie Land. And have lived there my whole life. Has been voted as the most livable city in the world more than once!
Melbourne is famous for it's trams, terrible transportation network, and wacky weather (we can have all 4 seasons in a day). Host the Australian Grand Prix ever year, and will be hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2006 (argh, traffic GET). Oh ya, it's also a sport crazy city. Very sport crazy.
Plus, NAL (Nintendo Australia) is located in Scoresby (is that a good thing?). And they treat us Aussie Nintendo gamers like sh!t. Huzzah for that!

Joe! Long time no see. I'm from Irk. I was banned to Food Courtia when I accidentally destroyed my homeplanet's army, but I decided to stop being banned and take part in Operation Impending Doom II. I was sent to earth to research the indiginous creatures and find out your weaknesses. MwAH HA HA.

My dad was an Air Force pilot for 22 years, so we moved a lot, although not near as much as some military families.
Also, Okinawans don't like to be called Japanese, they get REALLY pissed if you do as much. They were independant for a while until Japan conquered them. A lot of people don't know it, but karate was actually devised by the Okinawans to protect themselves from the Japanese. It's why a lot of the weapons look eerily similar to farm equipment, because the Japanese had taken all their traditional weapons and they had to improvise.

I live in Langley, British Columbia, Canada which is a suburb of Vancouver.
We're famous for a hockey team that never seems to win the big one. Okay not really. I'm just upset the Canucks just got eliminated from the playoffs.
BC is known for it's forests and mountains. We're known for our ski resorts including Whistler which is the location of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Vancouver has been called the Hollywood of Canada as several movies and TV shows are filmed here. X-Men 2 for example was filmed in Vancouver.
Although he wasn't born in BC Bryan Adams was raised and started his music career here. Michael J. Fox was born in BC. NHL stars Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman are both from BC.
And finally BC is apparently known for it's quality pot though I have absolutely no experience with that whatsoever and thus can't confirm that. People also say Vancouver has really pretty girls and though I haven't travelled to very many places I would have to agree.
Edit: I almost forgot. EA Canada is also located in BC. I believe they made SSX which pretty much makes them EA's top team right there.

I come from Dunedin, which is famous for its university. More specifically, its famous for its students. About a 5th of our population are students, who are known here as 'scarfies'. To accomidate the scarfies, thousands of run-down old houses have been turned into flats. Being young and living in a really crappy flat is another one of our icons (though it sould be noted that a few hostles have been popping up lately.) Scarfies are renouned for their love of drinking (which has, with the lowering of the drinking age, extended to my brethren, the highschool students; we're the most pissed-up town in New Zealand ) and couches (a crappy run-down couch is yet another symbol of Dunedin.)
Other than that, a 'Scottish Heritige", the steepest street in the world and terrible weather represent Dunedin.

Vancouver, B.C.
See Ian's description.
Add to it that it was Minoru Arakawa's North American home after he got married to Yamauchi's daughter and moved away from Japan, before he moved to New York (and later back towards Seattle) to build Nintendo of America. Supposedly Arakawa started up a world-class sushi resturaunt somewhere in Vancouver when he first moved here, and still owns it. I don't know exactly which one, and don't eat sushi anyways.
Nintendo of Canada is located just outside of Vancouver, in Richmond, one of our suburbs. The world's first ever videogame development school "Digipen" was setup by NoC in Vancouver.
EA Canada has some sort of massive HQ in Burnaby, another Vancouver suburb. It's supposed to be fricken HUGE (I've only seen it from one side, through some trees, and it did look pretty big) and state-of-the-art, and does a good chunk of EA's business (like, all of their motion-capture, and voice recording, for starters), and EA still apparently wants to double it's size. All of Final Fantasy's translation work when Square was teamed up with EA was apparently done inside the Burnaby HQ.
The "Electric Playground" videogaming TV show is based out of here. I was lucky enough to hang out in their office once, a long time ago. Never met Tommy or Victor though.
"Ocean Studios", a company that does a LOT of voice recording for English-dubbed anime shows like Dragonball Z and Gundam is located right here.
"Mainframe Entertainment", the computer-animation guys behind shows like Reboot Transformers (Beast Wars and Beast Machines), and the latest cel-shaded Spiderman series is here.
Other popular Vancouver-based TV shows would include Highlander: The Series, The X-Files, Stargate SG1, and Smallville. My older brother once goofed around in Duncan MacLeod's dojo (he crossed one of those "do not cross" ropes), my sister was an extra on an episode of the X-Files (and mistaken for Gillian Anderson's stand-in), I've got Michael Shanks's autograph, and I've bumped into Kristen Kreuk once (but I had nothing for her to autograph).
And I am also pained by the Canucks loss.

Famous for stealing the Americas Cup then having some crazy Maori smash it only to be stolen by the Swiss. Non-existant public transport. Wasting 500 Milllion on a train station nobody actually wanted or needed as there was a prefectly good one 200 meters down the road. Greater than 1/4 Of NZ's population lives here. i now live in oak park, illinois, which is a very close suburb of chicago. frank lloyd wright used to live here and there are a bunch of buildings he designed all over the place. also, i hear the guy who plays frasier's dad on frasier lives here, but i've never seen him or his little dog.

Hey, I made Kansas sound halfway cool, and this is the most boring place on Earth. For example, I got really depressed about a week ago. I walked outside of my house to get the mail- it was nice and warm, not too humid, the sun was bright, there was a slight breeze, overall very pleasent. Then I remembered I was in Kansas and all that just blew away, so to speak- I'm not kidding at all. I've lived here for 10 years and I'm surprised I haven't gone crazy yet- there is nothing to do in Kansas. With the sole exception of our outstanding zoo (considered one of the best in the nation, has one of the largest animal collections in North America, and has what is considered the finest lion exhibit in the world) and the Cosmosphere (has the Apollo 13 command module, assembled and owns the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft, and has an SR-71 Blackbird), Kansas is a wasteland. Even my friends who have lived here their whole lives can't stand it. I lived on an island before moving here- can you imagine what it's like to go from having the ocean no more than a half hour away to having the nearest ocean some 1,500 miles away? Kansas- cool place to visit, very nice people, but shoot yourself if you ever have to live here.
The weather does get pretty cool, sometimes, though.

But we have a zillion pizza places(yes, a zillion) and lots of tastey wings. I love the food, but the weather sucks. Soon I shall be attending UB, and there my area will be famous for wings, yay. HOLY CRAP
Where was this Donkey Kong?! I hope it's not far away, because I'd love to go to a place where the mix pizza with mint gorillas. ^_^ And this arcade you speak of, I have NO idea what you're talking about. My dad used to manage "the arcade" but it wasn't a real gaming arcade.......it was more like a crappy mall. =\ Other than that we have a Dave and Buster's, but I've never played there. I don't like 'power cards.' And since this is providence (which does have many awesome resturaunts) the admission on entry of this arcade will be some outrageous price that you wouldn't spend half of in quarters.
I still want to go there though. ^_^

Hmm I don't know where it was because I was just on vacation there a long time ago. It was along a road right by the beach, and there was a large arcade nearby. Sorry lol, but if my friend remembers I'll get back to you on that (he should know since it was his family and I was with them). Yea it's Dave & Busters, I remember my friend saying that name and that you just paid at the door and then it was free. If that's not the case I'm sorry for getting you excited. I'm just stating what I was told. Good luck

Well, you pay for a card and you get so many games that you can play before you have to "recharge" your card. They're pretty expensive, i think.
I get excited over everything. =p Besides, I knew even if it wasn't D&B's I'd prolly still never go. And evern IF the pizza place is relatively near me, summoning enough energy to get off my ass and go would be hard and i'd prolly never make it. So don't go crazy looking for the loactation of the DK place ( but I'd still like to know =p).

I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Known for being the home of the Guess Who and Neil Young, who's former hockey team owns the NHL record for most consecutive games without a win (32). I was at the game when that streak ended, Doug Smail scored to beat the Colorada Rockies (not avalanche). I now live in Toronto and Sarnia (have houses in each, spend similar amounts of time at each). Toronto is known for arrogant hockey fans who will never win a stanly cup (GO FLYERS GO) and some of the worst drivers on the planet. Sarnia is known for its chemical valley, where nearly anything you can think of thats toxic is made.

"the worst drivers on the planet."
I'm sorry, no. That dubious honor belongs to Egypt.
How to drive in Egypt:
1) Don't bother with brakes. Brakes are for wusses. 2) Start ignition. 3) Start horn. Don't let it go until you reach your destination. 4) Roll down window for more convenient sticking of head outside and swearing. 5) Floor it.

"Toronto is known for arrogant hockey fans who will never win a stanly cup (GO FLYERS GO)"
Damn straight. When the Leafs played against the Canucks in Vancouver earlier this season all these Leaf fans showed up and BOOED THE CANUCKS. These Vancouver residents actually booed their home team in favour of a team from Toronto, which is by far the most unpopular eastern city in the eyes of most BC residents. So naturally I'm hoping Philly creams their sorry asses.
I think it's funny that the Leafs are known for not winning the Stanley Cup when in fact the only team to have one more cups is the Montreal Canadiens.

Heh, they're not much better in Japan- if the guy in front of you runs a red light and the guy behind you wants to run a red light, you're running that red light, too. There will be a lot of times in Japan where people will just keeping driving through the red light, forcing the people going the other way to stop even though they have a green light.

Quote Toronto is known for arrogant hockey fans who will never win a stanly cup (GO FLYERS GO) and some of the worst drivers on the planet.
Although I agree with the Flyers kicking Torontos ass. I have to say, just having migrated to Florida has given me a whole new insight on hideous drivers. They're brutal, and I'm from Jersey for chrissakes!

I think the "_____ has the worst traffic in the world" thing can be explained by a few simple rules.
1. Traffic sucks in major metropolitan areas. Thus the traffic sucks in Toronto, New York, LA, Chicago, Seattle, etc.
2. The United States and Canada are the only two countries in the entire world where anyone drives in a civilized manner.

Heh, when we went to Mexico people would go into on coming lanes of traffic to pass someone on a highway. I thought that was funny.

No, see, I thought so too, but it's a common misconception.
You're going to have to add "Middle of Nowhere" to that list in number 2. They drive in a very civilized manner there because there's barely any crime so the police hunt down bad drivers instead.

Which country is this particular "Middle of Nowhere" in?

If I told you it wouldn't be a gimmick anymore, now would it?

The places best for driving are wealth areas that are scarcely populated. Chiefly rural areas in N. America, Europe, and most of Australasia. Poorer places like India, China, much of S. America and Russia have both poor roads and have a system where a drivers liscence can be easily obtained; large metrapolition areas have too much congestion/road rage.
Oh, New Zealand was the first country to give women the right to vote.

I live in Silver Creek, GA. I'm not sure where the creek is, and I'm not sure it ever had any silver in it. For every stage of my life I have moved farther and farther away from people and civilization in general. Everytime I opened my eyes I saw less people and more livestock.
I was born in Newnan, GA a good-sized city with a rich history dating back to the Civil War. When I was 4 or 5 I then moved live in a screwed up yet bustling city of Carrollton, GA. Then I moved to Bowden, GA a peacefully quiet hamlet. I didn't mind it, in fact I grew to like it. Nice weather there. But when my parents' work demanded they leave we landed in a subdivision in Rockmart, near an old Goodyear plant. Rockmart, GA, despite it's desolation from the Goodyear plant downsizing (I dunno if it closed or not), was a pretty cool place for a non-working kid like I was. I found lots of other kids that loved playing video games and baseball. We all sucked at baseball, but we still loved to play anyway. It was nice, my favorite place. But Mom and Dad needed to uproot again, so onward my family went to a really small town of Aragon, GA. This place sucked, I lived in a duplex in a community with the most unsavory of men and women. The types that would kill a cat with a BB gun for scratching a car. Thankfully we bought a scrap of land out in Silver Creek and built a house with money fused with a rather fortunate inheritance, and now I live there. Or rather, here. It's dull out here. And improvement over the last place, but since I just graduated I find myself with a lot of free time. Not a lot of jobs out here. All the good ones taken. All the bad ones taken. Not a good place to be when you're thinking about college. Ah well...
Oh about Georgia, heh. Well... Coca Cola. That guy Alton Brown (host of Good Eats, neat food network show) is from here. The Atlanta Braves, who have no pitching anymore, d'oh! Oh yeah, peanuts. Chickens too. Onions. One of the 13 original colonies, right. But most people in the other 46 non-Florida Contiguous states see Georgia as the driveway to Florida. And I wish I could argue with them. But it's true. There is lotsa neat stuff in Georgia, like the Shakespeare Tavern, but most people just wanna get to Florida. And that's ok.

We had a serial murderer in our town for a while, just a few months back. He killed some women in Baton Rouge, but only about 5 or 6 that are known to be his victims, so he ain't big time or anything. Derek Todd Lee, I believe is his name.

I'm from Queensland, Australia. Townsville to be precise. There's nothing terribly special here. There is the strand I suppose but that is far from an international wonder. I hear that it won the Australia's Cleanest Beach award. Or something like that anyway.
