Title: Chunsoft's
Post by: StrikerObi on March 25, 2004, 07:21:41 AM
Gentleman, start your modems.

According to Game Science Chunsoft recently announced that their upcoming GameCube RPG, Homeland, will have an online mode. The game will ship on two discs, one for offline play and the other for online play.

The online version of Homeland will be free to play. Instead of connecting to servers players will run their own servers. The servers are planned to support up to thirty other players connecting to them. Rather than playing along with everybody else, the player running the server will play the role of something like a dungeon master. The host can look at the stats of other players, spawn monsters, and make certain events happen.

Homeland is currently set for a summer release. PGC will have more on its new online mode as it is revealed.

What? Another online Gamecube game? This doesn't make sense. It is almost April 1...

Seriously, this is way cool. I'd be tempted to try this out even if I'm not a big RPGamer anymore.

"Instead of connecting to servers players will run their own servers."

I'll be interested to see how this turns out since in theory this is a GREAT way to save costs and those who want online play can have it.  It's really win-win.  I hope this is successful because this idea would work great for Nintendo's own games.  With this model they can make the next Mario Kart a great standalone title that also has online support for the hardcore to setup servers for.  I guess such a method wouldn't draw the mainstream crowd that Nintendo probably would want but it would satisfy the online supporters without major expense on Nintendo's part.

if they included a Neverwinter Nights type toolkit and a really large memory card, things would be perfect

The game being an RPG is already enough for me to demand a local release. The online feature I probably won't use, though.

Its about time they thought up and brought this model to the market.  It seems to work on the PC, so why not consoles.  Running your own server is better than paying a monthly fee on top of the cost of the game to play.

It sounds good to me, I just don't understand why this hasn't been done before? I guess it's like what Ian Sane said, "in theory" it sounds good. If it does turn out I'll probably get the game.

See Ian Sane bold doesn't =angry

If this is a success,  it could revolutionize online gameplay.    All the  online games that are currently out now (excluding the mmos) use P2P, but no one really   notices it.  This could show how  P2P  can be turned into an aspect of  gameplay, and, if successful, could  possibly   give a nice push for online play...

Of course, that probably won't happen.

If only Nintendo did something like this with their games...   like Pokemon Colosseum,  or Mario Kart, or Mario Golf, or F-zero, or Super Smash Brothers.

As  NintendoFan said:  Genius.  Pure genius.

yeah, i agree, if this does work, which i hope it will, the idea will probably be utilized by a lot of people, hopefully opening up more opportunities for nintendo style fee-less online play... but failure would obviously have just the opposite affect <watches dreams of free online gaming go down drain>

Churnsoft need to churn out a Western release. Hrhrhrhrhr. Nice to see developers supporting GameCube's horrible state of online goodness, though.

this way of doing online is what i've wanted all along, i could very easily host my own server for what ever game(s) and yeah... PSO should be like this.

actually PC online games are done like this most ISP's have a couple of servers for each popular game, 2-3 CS servers, BF1942, CoD etc, this idea of chunsoft's is basically using the same idea.

I'm just theorizing, but if no information is being sent to Chunsoft or Nintendo, there shouldn't be any problem importing this game and playing it online with other importers.  All the connections would be kept within the US/UK/Australia/wherever.

I read the part about the host being like a Dungeon Master and thats all i need to know.  Thats kind of like throwing different scenarios at the players and seeing what they do....oh yeah!    I'm buying this game.

Just saw a screenshot (They got this story from famitsu), and maybe its just me, but it looks like Animal Crossing with a higher poly count. Looks like it will have an action-comedy feel to it.

Hopefully it will have great gameplay to back it up.
