Damn this game is shaping up to be seriously cool, I mean, you get to control a phoenix! I just hope Cube owners will buy it and prove the Gamecube is great for mature/arthouse developers to work on, it's a shame we haven't got any really neat music games. It's nice to see the developer, Jeff Minter call the Cube one of the better platforms he has worked on.

No surprise there, since Tempest's creator, Jeff Minter, is the one making Unity.

sex and violence, not withstanding, the GTA games are the most innovative things since games went to 3D. what good is innovation if it doesnt deliver a fun gaming experience?

Actraiser> LOL, GTA innovative? The character can't even swim! And you must be talking about only GTA 3, and Vice City, because GTA 1 and 2 have nothing of 3D.
BTW, this game Unity also did look like one of the music visualizations that I had on winamp! Can't wait for it. I like strange games, that's why I got Pikmin and Cubivore.

yea i also dont agree that gta is the MOST inovative game since games went 3d.....i do think they are innovative though...and this game does look weird...i dont get it.

GTA3 is very innovative, actually- certainly not on the level of SM64 or OoT, but it revolutionized the level of freedom you have in a game. It doesn't matter if none of you liked it, you can't deny that Grand Theft Auto and Rockstar DID innovate, and a lot of other companies are incorporating the ideas in the game. You really have to look past the Nintendo loyalty that's blinding a lot of you.

The funny part is, however, is that the ideas from the games are just re-hashed from the original "over-head" games...The freedom in the game was innovative(even Miyamoto praised the amount of freedom the game brought), yes, but the good majority of the gameplay additions were not...

You guys are right GTA is innovative in some areas, but none-the-less it has its flaws, being one flaw that it gets too repetitive(at least for me)!

Not entirely true.
Unity looks amazing from those screenshots, i am very interested in how this game will turn out. I need a game like this for my GCN. Amazing how it's being developed by just one man, games with very small teams can turn out really good, nobody to argue with, you do what YOU want to the game etc.

GTA is innovative, but only to a certain degree. That's why it's so popular, very few innovation, mostly known material. If you stray too much from established concepts, you won't sell anything.
The problem with Tempest is the gameplay. It's basically a shoot'em'up (it was a 3d Space Invaders at first...) with some seriously unfair mechanics. If anyone in here needs to refresh their memory on Tempest, here is a pretty good clone with a few added features (just don't collect powerups if you want to play it like Tempest 1). Tempest is so awful, I bought it for DM5 and gave it away shortly thereafter. I hope Unity is better.
Mario: If so, can you name a few well selling abstract or heavily innovative games?

Dance Dance Revolution is very popular, as is Super Monkey Ball, to a degree. Largely, though, the public wants what they know and are very unopen to new ideas. Hence changes have to be forced.

Yeah, those plus Wario Ware (massive hit in Japan), Pikmin (million seller), that Namco drum game for PS2, just to mention a few. Being abstract or heavily innovative doesn't exactly mean casual people wont buy it, it just depends on the game, and whether or not it attracts people's attention. (and also how the game is advertised olol)

I've never played GTA3. I probably never will. What's innovative about it? It seems like games have been pretty open for awhile now. At least Mario64, OOT or even the little bit of Driver 2 that I played seemed that way. They had a storyline, but you didn't have to follow it if you just wanted to run around and jump on stuff and smash pots. That seems to be what people love about GTA from what I hear. You can play the game, or you can just drive around town. I figure I'm missing something.

GTA 3 was fun, specially going to my friends house and doing some of the missions. Then I bought it for PC and beat it all the way through and stopped playing it...there wasn't much left, unless you want to spend the rest of the time looking for hidden packages, which I hate doing in games. So I was left with no replay value, although the time I spent was enjoyable.
Then I got Vice City, and to tell you the truth, there was nothing innovative in that at all. The whole "chainsaw" or "walking into buildings" or "motorcycles" was just a pathetic gimmick to sell games. Unfortunately, Americans are pretty "stupid" when it comes to how innovative a game is, and they swallowed up Vice City whole. I took a poll of my friends of how quick they stopped playing, and it was right after they completed the missions. It wasn't like GTA III, where they played for an additional few months just enjoying the "free-ness" in the game.
So in conclusion, GTA III was very innovative. Vice City, just a rehash, as some people like to call it.

Yeah, I mean you could drive around endlessly in DKR, so in reality, GTA is not very innovative at all. And about innovative games: I believe that they do sell pretty well in Japan, but don't outside of Japan. I guess it's just cultural differences...

I have a friend who's playing GTAVC and Freelancer like mad. He's modding the hell out of both games (even in Freelancer online!). After a few months he even felt obliged to buy GTAVC.

Boy has this topic gone off topic. Anyway I don't know much about Unity but it looks neat. I'll wait for reviews though before I try it out. I'm surprised that some of you are dismissing it so early though. Who cares if it won't sell? This is the Gamecube. Everything doesn't sell. I figure most of you would be willing to give it a chance since us Cube owners are supposed to be more hardcore or whatever.

Unless it's as bad as Tempest, I'll grab it for sure, that's clear. I love abstract games. It's sponsored by Peter Molyneaux, so sales don't seem to matter, originality is what the "publisher" wants. What we should ask ourselves: Will we remember this game en years on?

thecubedcanuck, I didn't mean to rip on your game. I was trying not to. In fact, I cut out a bunch of crap that was ripping on it, and I even admitted I hadn't played it. Stop being a dick and tell me what the hell the new "free" sytle of gameplay that GTA3 had is? If its a sham but the game is fun, thats great. I don't mind repeats usually as long as they're done well. If it brought something new to the table, then explain it, cause so far I ain't heard nothing

Because you haven't played the game! You don't demand that people explain what makes a book so great, or a painting so great just by hearing very little about. Generally you have to read the book, view the painting, and after that you usually discuss it. What your doing now is similar on par with the blind men and the elephant, blindly describing a rough idea of what they think it is.
As for grand theft auto, the freedom is what is fun about it. There is a lot of freedom to go do a side mission (there are too many to get bored with) and a lot of the game lets you just do whatever you want. It just comes down to a fun game that lets you do basically anything you want.
