Title: What happened to the Flash cards for memory?
Post by: Saturn2888 on January 09, 2004, 03:26:55 PM
Nintendo just left alone most of their unique GCN ideas. The GBA-GCN adapter isn't used much or efficiently. There are also no SD memory cards.

they get a passing mention every year or so I guess it just wouldn't be a money maker for Nintendo themselves, like the standard memory cars are.

The SD adapter was released in Japan. Animal Crossing e+ uses it, but I think that's all.

yeah, maybe next year nitnendo will put it to good use. Also have any of you noticed Nintendo hasn't been doing much themselves in the last few months...theyve taken a backseat and let the third parities drive.

They been doing some. But I think they are researching different franchises, and wheeling deals, so they will not appear as busy as before.

Flash memory still costs an arm and a leg. And there's no real reason for a push since there's zero online support--meaning no downloads.
So why would you need a 128MB card (which costs $50). when a 4MB (251 MC's) would do.

The SD cards aren't for save files, they're for transferring media to games, or downloads, or other storage needs of games.

SD cards could be used as memory cards if games were specifically programmed to use them. None of the present games are programmed to do that so the two are incompatible. I think if nintendo does release it games will begin to use them.

Well, hopefully. But I just wanted to point out that that isn't the intent of the SD adapter. Does anyone know what AC e+ uses it for?
Edit: As far as we know, the SD Card Adapter will only be used so that Animal Crossing e+ data can be traded over the Internet.

The high-capacity flash cards should've been usable with the system as memory cards from Day 1. Friggin' Hitman 2 requires 59 blocks. Even worse, BG&E slapped me in the face and asked for another 55 blocks. How dare she!

The SD adapter is used to capture screens in-game (I think you push Z). As I understand it, the pictures are saved as JPGs or some other common format, and can be copied to any computer via an SD reader. You can also copy your village data to an SD card and email it to a friend. The web site demonstrates printing pictures and emailing data via diagrams.
So yeah, the SD card could be used for larger-scale updates. Surely it could be used to add new levels, etc. if the game is programmed with the proper hooks. The GameCube wouldn't even need to go online. This would be a very clever way for Nintendo to sell or give away ROMs: just download to your SD card and boot up Animal Crossing 2.
