Post by: WindyMan on December 30, 2003, 07:08:17 AM
Why cheat and beat the game when you can buy something that already has the game beaten for you?

Mad Catz Brings GameSaves for GameCube™ to GameShark Lineup

First GameShark Product for the GameCube™ Enhances Players' Gaming Experience

San Diego, California, December 29, 2003 -- Mad Catz Interactive, Inc., the world's leading third party video game accessory manufacturer, announced today it has shipped its newest product in the growing GameShark® lineup, GameSaves for GameCube(TM).  Packed with tons of killer game saves for all the hottest and most popular GameCube titles, GameShark GameSaves for GameCube enables players to access and experience virtually any level within the game, obtain killer objects and unlock hidden areas, all without having to complete preceding levels.  GameSaves for GameCube is currently shipping to retail outlets for a suggested retail price of $29.99 U.S.

GameShark, the leader in video game enhancement software, GameSaves for GameCube gives players hundreds of options for their games.  With more than 150 game saves, players aren't restricted to starting only at the beginning -- they can start virtually anywhere in the game.  And, with the included high-speed USB cable, players can download even more game saves from the Web, store them on the computer and email to friends.

"Since purchasing the GameShark brand earlier in the year, we have successfully broadened the lineup to include all the major consoles and handheld systems available," commented Darren Richardson, President and Chief Operating Officer for Mad Catz, Inc.  "We are thrilled with the performance of GameShark and are happy to offer GameCube users a taste of the GameShark experience with this incredible product."

Steven says: From the looks of it, you can ransfer your legitimate save files from the GameCube to the PC with this.  This is the only reason why I'd be interested in this product.

Ooooh, now people who really suck at games can jump through them and see the ending in 10 minutes.

How can Mad Catz have the nerve to claim that this "Enhances Players' Gaming Experience"???

I don't know, selling game saves to untalented feebs that can't beat the games on their own would certainly enhance MY gaming experience,....

I actually can see some usage for this.  First of all like Windy said you can use this to backup saves to your PC so you only ever have to buy one memory card.  It also would be pretty nice for rentals.  If you only want to rent F-Zero GX and have no intention of buying it you might as well use to this to unlock all the tracks and cars since you probably couldn't do that in the rental period and thus want to see everything.  In order to have four players play any character they want in Def Jam Vendetta for example you need to have unlocked every character FOUR TIMES.  That's a big pain in the ass when you just rented a title to play with your friends.  Finally this is useful for Sonic Mega Collection that requires you to enter and exit each game like a hundred times to unlock Ristar.  Since every web site I see talks about a different requirement to unlock that game a pre-loaded save would be nice.

i agree with ian.  i can also see use for this product for fighting games with unlockables.  it would be nice to be able to have every character/arena/weapon available without playing through the typically dull single player mode for hours on end.

The only thing I would use it for is to save my files on my PC, which would be incredibly useful.  Plus you can email your files to a friend which is kind of cool.  But what it's really meant for is really really stupid, imo.

but Ian did bring up a good point, and I'm sure somebody will find other uses for it.

Yeah.  A lot of things we use everyday and take for granted weren't originally planned for those purposes.  So, with Ian's brainstorming, this little gadget is starting to look at little more appealing.

It's also great for using custom characters in wrestling games, RPGs, etc, etc. The list is endless and it is not a waste of money, or stupid whatsoever..

Because you could make CustomizedCharacter55 and then save and transfer it to your PC and then email it to me and then I could transfer it to my memory card thus giving me your cool custom character.

Third save backup thing out. I hope the file format is compatible with the USB memory card and GSC. Another use for this is loading premade Timesplitters 2 files. And just for more storage. Anyone, I already have PSO and a BBA, so I'll just stick with GCS.
BTW, does anyone know if it shows the actual filename (kind of confusing, sometimes it's just g435tx.gc or whatever.

That's RIGHT!  We could share Timesplitter 2 MAPS!!

Now you're talking. There was this other product only available in Japan that let you transfer memory card files to your PC, but it's quite nice to see something available in the US now. Basically, any game that's customizable would benefit from this. Here's some more examples:
Animal Crossing: Got some extra room on your memory card, and don't know anyone else who plays the game in your area? No problem! Just find someone on the 'net who likes the game, get them to send you their town over e-mail, and go visit! You could have a whole community of people who visit each other's towns, trading neighbors and screwing up the landscape, just as long as people agreed to keep sending files back and forth. Also a good way to trade textures and, to a lesser extent, town songs.
Sports/Wrestling games: Any custom teams, custom players, etc., can now be shown to the world to be admired. I'd especially like to see people take advantage of this for Wrestlemania XIX (bad game, yes, but good customization features)
The Sims/Bustin' Out: Trade your Sims from across the country... on a console this time!
SSB:M: trade your pics, without the need for a fancy screen capture device!
But of course, TimeSplitters 2 really does lend itself to this feature (especially considering how large some maps can get)
So yeah, I'd say it's worth looking into.

i think it's kind of funny how everyone's hyping this up, but that's not even the device's main function.

People fail to see the coolest part about this device..or at least it seems to me...

FRICKEN MARIO KART AND F-ZERO GHOSTS!  This is feeding into my latest website project I'm going to launch shortly...

Hm- at first I was wondering about the functionality of such a product as well, but you guys have come up with some pretty good uses for it. It's not entirely new, though- there was the Dex Drive for the N64.

These things are also great for "RPG Maker" games.

In case anyone didn't know, with RPG Maker you can design/write/draw your own RPGs (within certain boundries), and save them to a memory card (or at least that's how it was with the PSX version). With one of these devices, you can trade and play homemade RPGs with any similarly-equipped fans of the game on the internet. Of course, I don't think there's an RPG Maker game available for the Cube at this time.

Personally, I don't like pre-loaded saves unless they offer something special. Which usually means hacked. Like playing Castlevania SoTN starting with something like the Crissagrim instead of that stupid Short Sword. It's kind of fun sometimes. But, I doubt that Nintendo's made it very easy for anyone to try and hack the gamesaves.

So basically this thing's just good for a nearly-infinite storage space memory card, and an enhanced way to show off/share accomplishments with your friends. Well, that's plenty cool enough by me.

I got one of them for $0.99

I just can't find many uses for it, since almost nobody used the memory card.

DexDrive = best peripheral EVER.  I only ever had to buy one N64 and one PSX memory card.

For the dexdrive, if you used a gameshark pro, you could connect it to your PC and download gamesaves from a cart, like from Zelda, and then you could save it to a memory card, or send it over the 'net, or whatver you wanted.

I'll buy this for one reason.... NCAA Football.... Now you can have player names rather than simple #'s, and you might be able to download updates throught out the season for all sports games.

I believe that Animal Crossing, F-Zero GX Garage Data and PSO can't be moved or copied from the memory card it's on.

F-Zero Garage Data can be moved, the only F-Zero data that can't is your progress through the Story and Grand Prix modes... which is uber lame.

Plug: But I doubt those restrictions apply when the memcard interfaces with a PC.

It's because of the internet ranking- they don't want you copying someone else's progress and then get above a lot of other people that worked really hard to get where they are.

I've seen some STUPID gaming wastes in my life, but this one takes the cake. First off, I kinda like cheating, especially Gameshark, but only after I beat the game and wanna really screw around. But at least w/ cheating you actually play through the whole game (well, there are level warps), and have fun doing it. You see what the game is about, all the story plots (and plotholes) and your character evolve. Just loading a beaten game makes for no reason to play the game, other then maybe see an ending you couldn't understand because you never saw the story evolve. The only point to this would to back up your save files and send them to friends online. Still, you could just do this by taking your 2 memory cards and copying files. Oh wait, I guess your too damn lazy to get off your ass and see your friend. Also, if your too cheap to shell out some cash for a memory card shame on you. I never see how people can fill up memory cards. I have 16 games and many more game files on my Gamecube memory card, and it's not even near filling up. Plus, this is just my personal problem, my PC sux! It's a Pentium 2! I would never back up anything on this piece of junk, not after counting 3 virus attacks, resulting in a hard drive wiping everytime! The only real reason for buying it is if you rented a game for a party w/ your friends and don't want to spend half the night unlocking the first part of secret multiplayer options. In fact, that might JUST be a reason for me to buy it, when I have this extra 30 bucks burning a hole in my pocket.

I hope you don't mind me posting this, but there is already a nice yahoo club for gamesaves at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ngcfs/ . Someone there has even started hacking TS2 maps to put in secret characters and stuff. And someone posted there that PSO has some sort of protection against copying memory card files.

SSJ Shake: I guess you weren't reading the other posts. The use for this would be to transfer game saves over the internet to people you don't know, not to your next-door neighbor.
Sounds like there's some cool applications of this, but it would be nicer if you could do it without getting cheat saves as well.

What I don't get is why people whine and complain about products like this.  About how it's cheating or it ruins the game experence or whatever.

It's this simple.  If you don't like the product, then don't buy it.  If you never buy it, it in no way affects you or your gameplay expericnce.  Let peope do what they want with their games and ruin them if they want.

I'm not complaining about offline, but it could be used to cheat online as well.

Yeah, there's some advantages to this besides "beating the game on the work of someone else", but what's the sad part is that a bunch of peripheral developers realized that there's enough market potential for this. Lazy "gamers" who can't even be bothered to actually play through the game that they've spent their money to buy...or rent. The "beat the game in a day" mentally really leaves me wondering. Go take up another pastime already.

Never mind.  After about 10 attempts I finally found one at an "out-of-the-way" EB games.
