Title: Cube on an HDTV, aspect ratios?
Post by: Ryan7968 on December 26, 2003, 06:59:45 AM
Hello all, love the forums here. They have been a great help since I purchased a Gamecube two months ago.
I understand that I need to order the component cables from Nintendo to get progressive scan enabled in supported games, but what about the 16x9 aspect ratio? This page claims that NBA Street Vol. 2 can be played in a 16x9 aspect. Recently I bought a new widescreen TV, and when playing this game the image gets stretched making the players look slightly stocky.
Sorry if this topic has been discussed before, I searched a bit only to find info on progressive scan modes but not aspect ratios. I'm still learning all about these widescreen HDTV's and how they work with devices and the signals they put out. Too bad the component cables are backordered from nintendo.com, because I can't wait to see Metroid Prime and F-Zero GX in progressive scan mode.

The component deliver both widescreen and progressive scanning. I believe you press B when booting to activate both with the cables.

all the widescreen options in my games are activated via the options menu, soul calibur 2 and f-zero gx sure do, so manually change your display mode from forced 16:9 to 4:3, then go into the options and change it there to 16:9, and wide screen glory will be yours!

Zoidberg's given you the most useful info here. Make sure your TV and the game are set to the same ratio. If a game doesn't have a ratio option, it likely doesn't support widescreen.

I don't think 16:9 widescreen has anything to do with component cables- that's where progressive scan comes in, which you can press B on some games to implement it. The two, progressive scan and 16:9 widescreen, are completely unrelated, although together form an orgasmic gaming experience.
