Title: Teh Kiddie!!!1 -- A Serious Topic
Post by: RyanL on November 24, 2003, 04:07:17 PM
We've all heard the arguments concerning how Nintendo is for kids, and we're all sick of it. However, let's suppose that you have a 9-year-old nephew who's getting a GBA for Christmas. What games would be appropriate for him? Let's further suppose that he's an athletic kid who also likes Yu-Gi-Oh, but he's not an experienced video gamer. Which game would you get him for Christmas?
-Ryan
(Rumors that RyanL has such a nephew, and that RyanL is merely trying to avoid having his post get lost in the 'What game should I get?' thread, are completely unsubstantiated.)

I have a friend with a 5 year old kid. I loaned her my GBA and my copy of Mario and Luigi, and he LOVES the game. I think that it's a game that's pretty much universally loved across all age groups.

Really any Nintendo game- I think Nintendo got the kiddy lable because their games appeal to people of all age groups rather than 20 year olds specifically.

I agree on this one but I want to see a 4 - 10 year old beat Metroid Fusion just out of curiosity.

Well, I meant they'd enjoy it, not necessarily do well at it.

Well if he likes Yu-Gi-Oh there are a few GBA games directly based on it, they're decent even if you don't like the series, so for a fan they'd probably be great fun.
Beyond that, any of the Super Mario Advance games are approachable for young kids, as are the Sonic games. Basically if you stick to platformers and anything based on a cartoon show made for children you should be fine.

I agree with the Super Mario games, and the redone Kirby is a sight to behold. Ahh, the colors...

Let's give this "crusty old thread" some closure.
I ended up getting him Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland (a.k.a. Kirby's Adventure). The verdict is in, and it's by far his favorite game. I was surprised by this outcome. Some other family members got him various Harry Potter- and Pokemon-derived games, and I assumed that he would like those more. Chalk one up for classic, fun games over fad games.
