Title: Technical computer question
Post by: Jdub03 on November 07, 2003, 04:56:01 AM
I just took my emachine to Computer builders warehouse to be serviced. My cdrom and my floppy was not working. They told me my computer had too much dust. The cdrom and the floppy drive needed to be replaced. They replaced it but did not attach the power cord or the cable that attaches to the motherboard. When I attached them both(power and cable) the cdrom would not receive power. When I dettach the cable running from the motherboard to the cdrom and leave the power chord in, it receives power. Can anyone explain to me what the problem is.

You might have the cable connecting to the motherboard in backwards. Symptoms like that are known to occur when that happens. Other than that? Not a clue. I would go back to the computer store and demand that they finish their job. I mean, that's what they got paid to do.

I did what you said. Somehow he fixed it. I think it was the way the cables were setup like you said. The technician was a newbie and did not install it right. Thanks for the advice.

Ok, Grey Ninja, here's a question for ya. (I couldn't find your Mozilla thread so I figured this would do.) I got fed up with Safari so now I'm on Firebird again and it's working fine. The problem is Thunderbird. How can I get it to get mail from my hotmail account? It asked something about an POP count or something and I was like, "Whaty?" I know how you feel about M$ and that Hotmail is run by M$N but someone duped me into joining a while ago and I don't want to change my email address. It's such a hassel. That's why I want to check it on Thunderbird. Thanks for your help.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and how can I make Firebird my default browser? Right now it's still Safari.

To make Firebird your default browser, go to Tools -> Options -> General. There should be a button in there to make Firebird the default.
As for Thunderbird? I'm sorry, I have never used it before. I am used to using webmail for all my email needs, although I have been meaning to check it out. But if it makes you feel any better, I am a hotmail user too.

Ok. Under Tools, there is only JavaScript Console and Page info....not very helpful. And I can't find an options menu anywhere else. Hm...strange.
Ha. I guess I do feel better about using hotmail. Thanks a mill bill gagillion.

I feel special right now because I know how to help Berny here. Basically since Hotmail is owned by Microsoft they don't want you to be able to use it with any mail client other than Outlook which is of course also Microsoft owned. There's ways around this though. Just click here and download this little program called Hotmail Popper. Once you download and get it setup just follow the directions on the page for setting up your Thunderbird account. This will allow you to check your Hotmail account through any mail client. I also have a Hotmail account and use Thunderbird as my mail client with Hotmail Popper so it does work.
There's also a similar program that allows you to check your Yahoo mail account through any mail client instead of having to pay them to be able to do so.

It looks like a Windows thing but I'll give it a try.
EDIT: Yeah, no can dozie.
EDIT2: GN, I just converted someone to Firebird. I feel so happy. I'm like that guy with the angel and the golden tablets. Or the other guy with the stone tablets. Or the other other guy with 12 friends.

Sorry, the Mac version must be just really strange then. For us Winblows users, there's an option underneath Page Info that holds the option menu. If it's not there, then I don't know what to say.
And if you are the dude with the stone tablets... then does that make me God?
And yes, Mozilla fully deserves first place in the browser war. Spread the word as much as possible.

I have done so. And shall continue to do so. And you are my burning bush...which sounds like a painful experience.
Oh and Gibdo, thanks for trying but there isn't a Mac version for Hotmail popper or so it seems. I check all over google and there were only like 5 links in English so I figured they don't have one yet. Oh well.
Wait, GN uses Windows? I would have thought you used Unix or Lenux or something. Or made your own OS. You sound like the kinda person that would do that.

Heh. I saw the feature list for Linux Mandrake 9.2 the other day, and I must say that I was drooling pretty good. But in order to reinstate my linux partition, I must first clean up my hard drive a little, and install partition magic. Once I do that, I can begin switching over to Linux once and for all.
The thing that's always kept me from switching before was that I played enough PC games to warrant keeping my Windows partition around as my primary OS. A while back in a fit of needing more space, I removed my Linux partition, and have learned to regret it. I play hardly any PC games at all these days, and I yearn for the freedom that only Tux can provide.

lol. I thought Windows was a bit out of character. Well, I'm now an official member of Mozilla's forums under the same name. I just asked the (other) almighties how to make firebird my default browser. I should get a response in a week.

Maybe you missed it in the other thread, but I can resize your picture for you, Berny- just email it to me at mrbody54@prodigy.net and I'll email the resized picture back to you.

lol. Sorry, mouse. I wasn't checking that thread. I'm currently obsessing over Firebird, but thanks, I'll send you the picture I want.

Consider it sent. Thanks again. It's too bad the Mozilla forums people can't respond as fast as PGC can. Damn I love this place.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and now that I think of it, could you size that alternate RE boxart to the right size? I got a new printer with cool photo paper and this would be the perfect time to waste some ink. I'll see if I can find the site again. I tried printing it like 40 times and it never came out the right size. I don't know if its my screen resolution or what.

Send it to me Berny, and I'll size the box art properly for you.

Good thing Ninja offered- I'm okay with tiny little 64x64 pictures where no one can tell the difference anyway, but I would totally bomb a boxart.
Picture is sent, Berny! I hope it's not too far off from what you wanted.

Ok thanks, mouse. I'm currently uploading a 1.7Mb image to hotmail's server. I'll check for your picture if and when it finishes. GN, I found the picture I was looking for in case you hadn't guessed. Get ready for a bigun.
EDIT: crap. I just realized its TOO big for hotmail. I'll send the smaller, less detailed one in a sec. (I feel like this conversation should be IMed.)

Berny, do you have msn? That might be easier for all...
Title: RE: Technical computer question
Post by: Berny on November 24, 2003, 05:57:20 PM
Um...no. And again I am shocked to learn that you are using M$ products. Ok, send me your sn and whatnot and we can get chatting. Oh crap it's 11 over here. Better hurry myself up.
EDIT: Update on Firebird as default browser: In order to do this on OS X.3 (Panther) open Safari and go to preferences in the "Safari" menu. Go to General settings and after downloading Firebird, you will be able to chose it as your default broswer in the menu named for this. Just thought this should be recorded for posterity. (sp? I've never used that word before in writing.)

I normally use Trillian Berny... it's irrelevant what services I use. I just use what my friends do (which happens to be MSN)
but don't worry about it. I just checked my inbox and found your pic. I might have it for you tomorrow, but right now it would seem that my PC is on the verge of crashing. I am getting errors in absolutely every program I use, and my hard drive seems to be corrupting data. I am going to do a mock-reinstall of windows tomorrow, and try to patch her up the best I can. But right now I can't even open Photoshop.
I'll get back to you on this tomorrow afternoon, ok? It's late here, and I need to get up at 6AM tomorrow.

Berny, here is your pic. That should be the correct size. There's no loss in quality from what you sent me, but I would still like the original BMP if you can get it to me somehow. There's no telling how long my server is going to run without crashing, so be quick in downloading. My PC is still coming down around me.

Ok, Ninja. Well, MSN is being a biatch. Even though I am logged into my .NET passport it won't let me use MSN messenger. I'm too tired to worry about that now, so I'ma go sleep. Berny: over and out.

That's great, Ninja. I might just print it off and use it myself. At least I won't have to look at that godawful cover Capcom has.
Title: RE: Technical computer question
Post by: Berny on November 25, 2003, 12:22:25 PM
Heh. It was the right size, Grey, but for whatever reason, my printer decided to cut off the last part of it. Luckily the shabbiness is on the back so I'm cool. Oh and also, the quality once printed is not that great on the back where the text and stuff is. Other than that its great. Oh and I smudged the front cover with my thumb but if anyone asks I'll say it was smudged by Miyamoto. I realize he had little to do with the game but everyone will still be like, "Ooooo..."

Berny, if you can host the pic for me somewhere, I can deal with it for you. But I have to ask... where did you ever find that gorgeous box art?
Title: RE:Technical computer question
Post by: Berny on November 25, 2003, 01:35:09 PM
The internet, Grey, the internet.
Actually I found it a LONG time ago before I even owned the game. Someone on these very forums posted it ages ago. Anyways, I got it from this site. It's really good. That guy should make box art for RE4 'cause Capcom doensn't know what it's doing.
As for me hosting that picture, its ridiculously huge and I'm happy with what I've got. Angelfire only gives me 10MB and I haven't used one yet...I dont think... so maybe I could. But not for too long. I dunno. Email me and tell me what to do.
Hey, I wonder what other alternative box arts this guy has done. Ima go check. Hoight!

Alright boys, I'm going to ask that you preview this picture via the much smaller pics already posted here before downloading this. If I see abuse of my bandwidth, it gets pulled.

I hope you arent expecting me to do that Ninja. I used my last photo paper on the other one and it looks good enough. Everyone else with RE and a good printer, I suggest you click on the preview and then print the picture from the second link. Good stuff.
Way to go Grey Ninja.

Nah, I thank you Berny. I might just go and get this one printed off. I always did prefer the Japanese version, and I find it quite surprising that someone actually managed to port it to NTSC style. And yes, the quality of the pic is amazing. I got PIAC to scan a cover of Skies of Arcadia for me, as my game came without a case. Australian cases are weird, so I had to edit it heavily. Since I lacked any kind of NTSC cover for the game, I just made a hybrid PAL/NTSC cover. I think it's rather cool though.

Post by: Berny on November 25, 2003, 02:21:05 PM
Wee HOO! I didn't know Australia got the good boxes! Jeez. If I had the money for Skies I would so print that out. Ninja, you should just put a huge collection of those on your site. Naturally you'd have to give credit where it is due, but it'd be nice to have them all in one place.
What does Aussie Mario Kart's box look like?
Title: RE: Technical computer question
Post by: Grey Ninja on November 25, 2003, 02:29:01 PM
Nah, that's just a low quality JPG Berny. I have that in an 8MB PNG too. The colors are a little off, but it's still a pretty fine cover when printed at the insane resolution that I convinced PIAC to scan it at for me.
I actually prefer the NTSC cover... but the Aussie one is different enough that I have some real bragging rights.
