Title: The Dissapearance of XGRA
Post by: MyopicMecca on November 03, 2003, 09:03:30 PM
So it all started in October, 3 days before the game was to be released at EB Games. I had my copy reserved... pre-bought actualy. A friend IM's me on AIM and informs me that he checked EB's webpage, and the game is pushed back. I look, and sure enough... pushed back to my birthday... Oct 22nd. This is surprising to me because I've never known a game to be pushed back... 3 days within it's release date. Especialy sence the game is already out on the PS2 and the XBOX. This is just the start though...
So I wait untill the 21st and call to see when they'll get it in the next morning. They inform me that the game has been pushed back again till mid November. I send a email to Acclaim and ask them what the deal is, and I get no responce. I think about deciding to not even get the game when it's finaly... if ever.. .released. I called a bunch of different places around this time and got many different answers as to what the release date is. Nov 4th... Nov 17th....
So yesterday, the 3rd.. I decide to go to EB's webpage again and see if there is a new release date... and the game is gone. Not on the release date scedual at all. I do a search for the game and it shows the PS2 and XBOX versions... but no GameCube version. I do some searching and find a number and call EB's worldwide headquarters... and they confirm that it isn't even in their computer system anymore. I do some more searching and call Acclaim's headquarters.. and all they can tell me is that they don't have a release date for the game.
So this is where I am, with absolutely no information as to what has happened or will happen to this game. Has it been cancled for the cube? Are they just tweaking it to improve on the framerate problems that the other 2 console versions had? I dont' have answers. I know it's to be the last Acclaim game to be made for the GameCube. I've always loved the XG series and I own every game except for XGRA. I was thinking that maybe someone here might know, or know of a way to find out the status on this game.

I've not seen anything about that, either. Only explanation I can see is one look at FZero was enough to make 'em shelve it. At least TubeSlider sold a few coming out a bit in advance of FZero, but I doubt XGRA would have made a ripple. The last installment was at least entertaining, though.

XG3 was good, but it was too slow and too hard to control compared to GX. XGRA as more depth and variety to it, but I don't think that was enought to convince Acclaim to release it. Perhaps they knew of the crapiness of their own product to Nintendo and Sega's greatness

Acclaim took one look at F-Zero GX, peed their pants, said, "Dude, we'll never sell this XGRA crap on the Gamecube when they've got a game that's much faster and better already available! Let's just see how many suckers we can get to buy it on PS2 and Xbox."

Heh, so true...
Acclaim sure likes letting their franchises slip...Both the first Extreme-G and Turok were really good, but now look at them...

I never liked Turok. I just couldn't get into it. Extreme G was ok. I've never played XG2.
The sound on all their games pre-GC/PS2/Xbox was just so horribly muffled comapred to Nintendo and Rare's games, I couldn't bare to play it. Even Shadowman was so bad. And their graphics engines. Oh good lord. Impossibly blurry textures and shite controls made their games eye-damaging too look at and not fun to control. It's Ok to say then that XG3 and Burnout are the only Acclaim games that i enjoyed.

History is repeating itself with acclaim. They used to be horrible, then they had a resurgence with Turok and XG. And what do they do? Totally ram these series into the ground, not improving anything in them. And now they suck worse than ever. Good riddance.

Wow. I guess I'm the only one that is realy into the XG series after the first one. I admit that Acclaim is going downhill, but i have such an addiction to fast racing games. I want to at least rent a play the game. Come on.. it's got to at least be better than XG2, which was the worst of the series. If they want to cancel the game, then fine. But the least they could do is at least confirm it's cancelation.

But Shadowman was one of the best looking N64 games ever with the aid of an expansion pak. Too bad the frame rate often ate itself at crucial moments, though...

We checked with Acclaim, and as of this point, the game has NOT been cancelled.

Shadowman on N64 was indeed great. Pick up a copy if you see it cheap.
