Title: Someone is changing my avatar...
Post by: honda_insightful on October 18, 2003, 04:16:58 AM
Someone (a moderator I assume) keeps changing my avatar to "Honda steals bandwidth from other people".  WHY?  My current avatar is only 64x59x1 kilobyte... it's perfectly legal.

well aparently your other avatar was hosted on a site that wasn't owned by you, hence bandwith theft, it's all in the rules.

That happened to me.  Open an angelfire/geocities/digikitten account and upload your avatars there.  There are people like Bertok and SUPER that also host avatars for people.

Sorry 'bout that.  I also host avatars, but I don't know how long angelfire will keep me before banning me again.

Ummm....if you were talking about my current avatar being deformed, well it should, it's an MS Paint creation and I love it.  I also have a Zim picture i made.

The GIR picture you provided is nice, but I want SUPER to give one of those surprise ones.  Untill then, MY GIR STAYS.  Or not, it depends on what I feel like doing.

EDIT:  I'll take yours just because I feel like changing my avatar.  CHANGE IS GOOD.

Well, if you had used your real name in your profile it would be easier to tell if the site the avatar is hosted on is your own or not.  If it is your site, then you're fine, but if the webspace belongs to someone else, you need to remove it.  That's what bandwidth theft is, leeching items hosted on a server that doesn't belong to you.

Something that will clue us in immediately to non-bandwidth-leeched images is if you have 'pgc' in the filename, or your username, or something like that.

about digikitten:  I can't upload anything!  It says only .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .png can be uploded, but it won't even accept those!  Anyone else have this problem?

Make sure the name in the place you copy it into has jpg not JPG in it. Just rename it from capitals to small letters, thats what i do.

I get JPG and jpg, all depending on which computer I use when uploading the image into my angelfire account.  I don't know why, but I do use Windows 98 at work and Windows XP at home.  does that make the difference?  But I don't use digikitten so just look at me like I'm a leper.

Well, I changed the file extension, and uploaded succedfully, but when I try to put up an avatar it comes up with a nice, big, healthy looking red X.  Hmmm?

I don't think I'm actually at the right webpage when I copy and paste the address.  I'm at the "manage upload" page, and I click on the file I want my avatar to be.  It's the only way I can figure out how to view my image.  Hmmmm?

actually, is it considered stealing bandwith if i were to host an image, if i ever figure out how to get it to work that is, from an online- journal?  the on-line journal site is melodramatic.com if that helps.

It's not the image that constitutes bandwidth theft, it's where it's hosted.  So if you were to download and image and host it on your own space, then that would be the end of the story.  However if you only link to someone else's server that's storing an image you like, then you're stealing.  For instance if you took our logo, downloaded it and put it up at say marcus.com/images/pgcicon.gif that would be fine, but if you simply linked to planetgamecube.com/pgcimage.gif you would be stealing.

Of course, Copyright Laws still apply.

What in the heck?  Every time I put in my avitar address and click update on my profile, it gives me the doing changes message, but then redirects me to my profile and takes off my avitar.  Is there some reason for this?

Well, when Ms. Pikmin and Berny had profile trouble, a quick switch of their browsers fixed it uo good.  But you don't seem to be getting an error message...it's just plain not working.  Hostile Creation might have had this problem, you can ask him.  I've no clue...

KnowsNothing, if you ever have trouble with angelfire again, you can let me know because I can host it for you on my webspace.

My email: kenny@belou.net

Let me know if I can help.

EDIT: I probably sound pretty hypocritical with my avatar not even showing up.  But, honestly, the server should be back up by later tonight.

Yeah, I did have profile trouble in the past, when the forums were really screwy, but recently I changed my profile several times and have had no problems.
