Title: Advertising.
Post by: Grey Ninja on October 01, 2003, 03:38:30 PM
So, I am just curious.  Is there anyone out there (probably a bad question to ask with the current state of PGC, but nevertheless, is there anyone out there....) who still thinks that Nintendo's advertising is sub-par?

Nintendo's "Who are you?" is a frickin masterpiece.  I just saw a photo on IGN where a bunch of people with Mario masks carrying "Who are you?" signs were walking the streets of New York.  I have seen pretty much every message board in existence talking about Nintendo's new ad campaign.  It's just sheer brilliance.

But I digress.  People around here have been babbling for some time that NOA's advertisements suck.  I have been telling them to sit down and shut up whenever I happened to see them post something.  Personally, I don't see where Nintendo's advertisements are any less than the competition's, and their major ad campaigns are usually so completely weird that it will have people talking for months.  Anyways, I think with the latest advertising campaign, hopefully this will be the last I hear of it.  People all over the place are going "WTF?", and in an ad campaign, that's EXACTLY what you want.

I can rant more about this later I'm sure, if there's still anyone left to fight.

well i think the ads have been pretty good as of late- i especially like the new 99 dollar gamecube commercial- it is pretty good- and they are advertising a whole lot more on their games- especially ones like final fantasy tactics advance and fzero- i havent seen much of the who are you ads but from what i have seen they are really good- hopefully the ads keep getting better- nintendo is doing a much better job than they did when gc was first launched

Doesn't remember when Nintendo hired a whole new advertisement devision? They worked on Nike commercials before I forget the name but I read the news on PGC about 7 months ago just after Wind Waker was released..

I love the "who are you?" campaign! LOVE IT! The US commercials are very good too, for Viewtiful Joe, 99 dollar cube, Soul Calibur 2 etc.

Nintendo Australia actually made a good commercial too! Its got the new price of $199 in a Pong game, the numbers 1 and 9, hitting around the middle 9, and it says "Time to update your gaming, Nintendo Gamecube now only $199" or something. Its brilliant!

Heh.  Good.  Everyone seems to be in agreement here.    I have already got my rant out of my system, and I don't think I have the energy for another.

I agree that the new "Who are you?" campaign is good--not great, just good--however, I really don't like new ad on TV with the $99 stickers.  No thought whatsoever seemed to have been put in that.

"Nintendo, ever wise in the ways of Buddhist philosophy, created a mind-expanding advertising campaign that asks the simple question, "Who are you?" It's a rhetorical question, of course, as Nintendo doesn't give a $h17 about who you are."

Zephos bless Nintendorks.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

i think the problem is lack of ads... nintendo's ads have always been entertaining, just not enough... the problem is we compare their quantity with that of their competitors and unfortunately both sony and ms love putting lots of ads out there.

Personally, I love this new "Who are you?" thing, because it's letting fans get in on it. I mean hell, Nintendo has managed to bring people together with these fan made 'Who are you' pictures on boards all over the Internet.

Plus it's obscure. That in itself gets 100 points in my non-existant rating system!
I'm even liking Nintendo Australia's new advertising method, by taking classic arcade games (Pong, Galaga) and turning them into $199 GameCube adverts. It brings a great big goofy smile to my face.

I've always liked Nintendo's commercials, but as yellowfellow said, there weren't aired enough.  I'm seeing more of them now, and they're better.  Although I do miss those cool ones with the huge glass box and the games playing inside of them.

The new ad campaign I don't think is THAT great.  But I do think it's SOMEWHATgreat becuase, as Infernal Donkey said, it let's fans in on the action.  The greatest part is the weirdness of it all.  Everyone knows videogamers like weird.

Absolutely havent been enough.  Now they are flooding the key networks with them, and thats what i like.  The new campaign is great.  Plus i like the ads where it whispers in a haunting voice 'gamecube' at the end...much better than previous ads.

I completely agree- when Peter Main departed, I was a little worried, and the first batch of ads out of NOA soon after he left weren't very good at all. But recently I've been very impressed, not only with the ads themselves but with the marketing technique, as well. I thought the short TV spots highlighting upcoming games (such as the ads for F-Zero, Rebel Strike, Wrestlemania XIX, and Soul Calibur 2) were ingenius, and I'm all the way with you, Ninja, when you say this "who Are You" campaign is a friggin masterpiece. Not only is it an original style of advertising but it's getting fans involved to, which only goes to bolster it's success. Now all Nintendo needs to do is extend this newfound (or refound) talent for ads to all of it's games.  ::cough::eternaldarkness::cough::
