Title: Atari questioning further Cube support??
Post by: Top Ramen on September 25, 2003, 01:50:24 AM
Atari just announced that they're cancelling Driver 3, Mission Impossible: Operation Surma, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines from releasing on Cube, while future titles are being re-evaluated.
http://cube.ign.com/articles/451/451351p1.html
What's messed up is Cube is actually still about 500k units worldwide ahead of Xbox yet the PERCEPTION throughout the media and market is what's causing this. Eidos wasn't a big loss, but Atari publishes some good games. This is a shame. Boo!

The Cube is well ahead in Japan, but behind in North America and Europe to the XBox. So while the Cube will continue to pick up titles aimed for the Japanese market, it will lose titles aimed for the U.S. and Europe. The converse is true for the XBox. It's a vicious circle, less titles in a particualr territory means less sales, which means even fewer titles in future.

Even if Cube has a slightly larger user base, Xbox's owners buy more games.

Yeah this is true, but the point I'm making is that to a game producer it's more important where a console is selling than how much it sells worldwide. As the charts in that link show the Cube is strong in Japan and a good third place in the US and Europe, but 3rd place is 3rd place and with game production costs spiralling the 3rd place system is the port that gets dropped first when costs have to be cut.
Long term, the difference is whether MS is willing to risk buying it's way into the Japanese market (probably true, at least until the XBox 2 succeeds or fails over there), and whether Nintendo can persuade 3rd party producers to keep making titles for the Cube outside Japan until the Cube 2 (depends on a change in attitude).

Here's a fact that was convientiently overlooked by the idiots at IGN.
Atari will be out of business in less than a year. Some analysts say 6 months.
Also, I would love a one on one debate with Matt Cassima or any other morons over at IGN.CUBE.
Their only job is trash Nintendo (and Sega) and to praise their $ony masters.

God darn Agent seven, can you stop being such a fan boy

Whatever Cannuck....Why don't you get off the high horse. Just because you don't agree with me, doesn't make you correct. I guess you 10 year olds forget about "personal opinions."
Hey canadian, how many game systems to you own? I have over 30 from just about every company in the business. How am I a fanboy again? IGN sucks, it's a fact.
As for Atari, many industry insiders and business analysts expect Atari to be out of business in a year or less. It's the truth.

well i'm glad nintendo made the price cut. hopefully it has some sort of effect on sales of the system, and more importantly of the games. if third partys keep dropping support like they have been recently, nintendos problems in north america will only get worse.
to be honest though, i'm not aware of many atari published games on gamecube. i own ikaruga which is published by atari, but i cant think of any others. the only game i was really interested in in those titles was driver3, but its not a good thing for the gamecube to keep losing third party games.

AgentSeven, I don't normally respond to your posts, because I rarely agree with you, and it's a personal policy of mine to simply not respond to a fellow Nintendo fan if I know that he's wrong. But in this case, I think that you are right. Atari didnt' blame Nintendo for cancelling their games. They said basically that they didn't have enough money to make games for all three consoles.
Driver 3, I could care less about. IMO, Atari did the right thing by not bringing it to GCN. I can't speak for all GameCube owners, but I would like to think that we wouldn't really jump at the chance to play a GTA style game. I would hope that it's not the type of game we would like to play.

AgentSeven, you've been warned for your attitude, and now I'm done with you. Have fun bashing Sony and other users on someone else's forums.

Did you ban Agent Seven? I don't understand why. He gives his opinion which may differ from others but he certainly didn't appear to offend anyone. Anyway, it appears Mission Impossible Operation Surma will still make it to the Cube, just not Driver 3 and that other game.

Bloodworth, although I don't really disagree with banning AgentSeven, I have to disagree with banning him over this. I just dont' think it's justified. He didn't do anything wrong in this thread. He has done plenty wrong in other threads, it's true, but I just think it's a little overboard to ban him because of this. I beg that he be unbanned, at least until the next time he really screws up. I will report him myself if that happens. I just ask that he be given a second chance, as I don't see much that's wrong with his last post.
Please?

Well while it wasn't shown as much in this topic, Agent was a little excessive(and that's me being nice) in a few others, particularly one which was a flame war between he and Mouse_clicker...If anything, he should have been banned then, not now....Oh well, c'est la vie

I think agent7 is correct. Atari's days are numbered.
didn't Agent7 just mention something about Nintendo using re-writable carts in one of his other threads? It was a throw away comment, but now a few weeks later, we hear about this Chinese Nintendo console that uses whatelse, "re-writable" carts! Didn't he also mention a sequel to final fantasy 7 like 6 months ago?
Strange.

I'm kinda sad about this Driver 3 thing. I played a bit of Driver once, and it was pretty fun. We've yet to get anything in the GTA vein yet for the Cube, have we? (besides Simpson's Hit and Run) Weird they'd cancel a title when they have no idea if it will sell well or not.
As for analysts saying that Atari is dead, they're the same analysts that have declaring the doom of Nintendo for the past 2 years. They're usually wrong. Atari has also died what seems like 10 or 15 times in the past 2 decades, but the name just won't leave. It's to precious a piece of gaming history. Nintendo should buy them and name their next system something like the Nintendo Atari 2600-2.

"Atari will be out of business in less than a year. Some analysts say 6 months."
This is all he had to say. The rest of the post was needless trash-talking, and he's decided to reveal that he's been banned before for the same reasons. Keep in mind that if I take the time to warn you, I'm not going to be patient with you ignoring that warning.

Why was that all he had to say though?
I haven't actually seen any Atari games I like at this stage (Enter The Matrix was a large disappointment). If there is one, I'll buy one. But I have yet to see one.

He's right that Atari are in trouble, but I doubt they are going to disappear altogether: - They just signed an exclusive deal to be the U.S. jewel case distributor for select Windows titles developed by Microsoft Game Studios until June 2006. - They publish the awful but incredibly best-selling Enter the Matrix (still in the US PS2 top 10 titles as of August) and the much better Neverwinter Nights and Unreal Tournament. - Atari's income this year is going to be at least 100% higher than last year, maybe even 150% higher. They are still in difficulties, but they are heading in the right direction.

I'm sure that Atari will pull support when their useless port of DBZ Budokai flops.

Well I for one am glad that AgentSeven is gone, becuase he annoyed the HELL outta me.
I never really was a fan of Atari. I don't folow many of their games, and I'm not sure if I own any (probably do though).
That is the end of my useless post. Goodnight!

Budokai won't flop. DBZ fans buy everything. Of course, if they all only have a PS2...

Plugabugz, Atari published Unreal, lets not forget. That game is the arcade of FPS. Good clean gameplay mechanics that one. With the power of the link gun and the numerous tech jumps, they are the marks of both an expert gamer and excellent design. But Atari didn't make the game, so it's not much of an argument.
Anyway, it seems like with all the games that use the unreal engine that'd Atari would be maiking some money, so what gives?
P.S. How do I get webspace for my avatar? I don't want to suffer banage, nor do I want to post w/o my nifty avatar! Oy, the pains of this world!

Epic now has a contract with Microsoft. Atari won't publish the next Unreal games.

ehh... In my opinion i dont really care if they did, i mean driver i never really got into it, and true crime is coming to all systems so i dont see any big loss from this, and the rest of their other games i think is crappy, so i dont mind at all if they stay or go

You guys it already has. Xbox has sold as well as dog doo in Japan. Its been a while since I've seen numbers but last I checked they didnt break 1 mil, which I know they Gamecube hasdone easily. Worldwide the gamecube is in 2nd, in the US it is 3rd, but thats ok because Nintendo has not lost as much money as Sony or Microsoft.

Yeah but Japan hardly concerns Atari. Worldwide sales not including Japan have GC last.

Hm, it looks like a major store here is dropping the XBox. At least they no longer have shelves for XBox games, they locked 'em all away and you probably have to ask an employee if you want to buy something XBox-related. Maybe they are preparing a new shelf, but there are no signs of such...
