Title: David Bowie
Post by: The Omen on September 19, 2003, 09:44:31 PM
I know theres a lot of youngsters on these boards, so i dont expect a lot of feedback. Anyway, i recently got into Bowie , and i have to say i'm very impressed. I know most of you will think of his 80's 'work', which isn't anything like his 70's or 90's stuff. The most interesting cds so far are what is known as the 'BERLIN TRILOGY'. Starting with 'Low', then 'Heroes' and ending with 'Lodger'. This guy was so far ahead of his time. I encourage everyone young and old, to start a collection. I now have 15 cds from Bowie (including the newly released 'Reality'), and theyre all great. Some are hard rock, some are industrial, some are funk, some are airy techno jungle beats, and some are just plain wierd. But, since nobody will read this, yay for freaking me!!!!!
Bottoms up!!!

Well, I need to go get another beer in a minute, but I will grace this thread with my presence first.
I must admit that I haven't listened to a lot of Bowie, although I did grow up in the '80s. But there's one song of his which recieved a very good cover from Nirvana, which was "The Man Who Sold the World". I rather like that song, although the Nirvana cover was loads better.

I used to think the Nirvana version was better, until i started listening to the Bowie version. His voice brings a lot more ...i dont know...haunting to the tone of the song. It is a little more folksy, though. Not bad for a 33 year old single.

I love David Bowie. You're right that his 80's stuff isn't really a true reflection of his overall body of work. He's going out on tour soon and I am hoping to be able to get tickets to his Northern California show. It's funny you would happen to start this thread now. I've had "Young Americans" stuck in my head for the last few days for some reason.

Thank you MS.PIKMIN, for saving this thread from being obliterated out of sight.
I just got tickets today to the Philly show. By the way, the sad thing is, i love the cd 'Lets dance'. Did you get his new CD? Very good. I guess i was just showing my age

You're welcome. Us old folk have to stick together. Let's Dance came out when I was in 7th or 8th grade. I can't remember which, but I really did like it and still do. It's just such a departure from what he was doing up until then. I do not have his new cd but am definitely going to get it. His show should be really good. I remember seeing old concert footage from probably around the Ziggy Stardust times and he is good live. The San Jose show is my only hope of sseing him. We can get a babysitter for a late night going 2 hours away from home, but 2 days or so to go to L.A. and back isn't going to happen.

Lets dance came out when i was 10, i think, but by then i alrready had Scary Monsters on vinyl, and thats all i owned up until a few months back....now i'm obsessed. I can hardly afford another obsession I have 'Bowie at the beeb', the live cd, and he sounds really good live, so i cant wait. I'm taking my uncle, who back in the day was telling me "forget Zeppelin and listen to this guy Bowie". Finally, i listened, 20 years later.

I love it, and the soundtrack. It may be nostalgia, but whats wrong with that? I loved for worse reasons than nostalgia, i'll tell you that.

I forgot about Scary Monsters. I never owned that album but I got MTV for the first time in late '83 and they showed the videos for Ashes to Ashes and Fashion alot.
Note: This was when MTV was good and actually showed VIDEOS! I remember my sister and I would camp out in the living room on weekends and watch MTV all night. They would only break in at the top and bottom of the hour for commercials.

Scary Monsters is a great cd, often labeled 'the last great bowie album' . Ashes to ashes is incredible. He basically rips apart his own persona of 'Major Tom', calling him a junkie, you got to love that.
By the way, i had MTV when it debuted, and there were NO commercials-ever. I was so hooked, i used to be able to name the video before the little synopsis came on, like 5 seconds.. I was cool

You're right. I couldn't remember exactly the deal as it was so long ago. But I do remember staying up all night watching videos, and you would watch for what seemed like forever before a "veejay" would come on. It was so great. They were good about showing pretty diverse genres of music too. I remember watching "120 minutes" back then. There were some pretty cool videos. It's too bad they've clogged themselves up with all the distractions they have now. It really sucks when they think it's great to show "4 in a row". Anyway, I'll contribute to the Bowie-ness again later. I'm off to my mother-in-law's for a family lunch. *stabs out own eyes with fork so can't drive* *mother-in-law says "that's okay, i'll come pick you up"*

He has a song in Moulin Rouge "Nature Boy" That is performed at the beginning of the movie. "Diamond Dogs" is also on the movie, sung by Beck. And "Elephant Love Medely" has "Heroes" in it, which was written by Bowie and Brian Eno. Also on the soundtrack, (I'm not sure if it's in the movie though) is a remix of "Nature Boy" with Massive Attack. But I prefer the un-remixed version.

David Bowie's alright. . . Labyrinth was cooler, though.

Bowie lyrics of the week: 'ITS NO GAME(part1)' , off of the 1980 release, ' Scary monsters(and super creeps)'.
1 2 1-2-2
Shiruetto ya kage ga kakumei o miteiru Mo tengoku no giyu no kaidan wa nai
Silhouettes and shadows watch the revolution No more free steps to heaven It's no game
Ore genjitsu kara shime dasare Nani ga okkote irunoka wakara nai Doko ni kyokun wa arunoka Hitobito wa yubi o orareteiru Konna dokusaisha ni iyashime rareru nowa kanashii
I am barred from the event I really don't understand the situation And it's no game
Documentaries on refugees Couples 'gainst the target You throw a rock against the road And it breaks into pieces Draw the blinds on yesterday, and it's all so much scarier Put a bullet in my brain, and it makes all the papers
There's always tomorrow when people have their fingers broken To be insulted by these fascists - it's so degrading And it's no game
Shutup! Shutu...

Bah, I went to look for my copy, but I can't find it! It's a Beta tape too, for those who remember Beta players. For those who don't, Beta tapes were basically mini-VHS tapes ^_^. My Beta player really sucks and only works half the time anyway, but I can't find Labyrinth! First it was my copy of Final Fantasy III, and now Labyrinth...Those evil goblins must be taking my stuff!

i have/had a beta player somewhere, isn't it better quality than VHS? but like so many other things didn't have the funding and therefor didn't thrive unlike VHS? (like amiga )

Yep, i do believe Beta was better, and Sony really wanted it to succeed, but they were the only ones, i guess.
Get the Labrynth DVD. It has a lot of behind the scenes stuff...its really good.

the reason why vhs beat out beta was industry ambition. Beta are great quality and last a long time. VHS is crappy quality and don't last more then a few years without degrading. They hated the fact that you could copy things at great quality so beta was purposely killed. VHS degrsades quality so the industry didnt mind that you recorded their stuff because it wasn't as good as the orignal.

Omen, I just wanted to tell you that I went out right after my last post on this thread and bought the new cd along with a double cd of singles from 1969-1993. There was a terrible selection so I figured the singles cd was good since I'd be able to hear stuff from all through his career.
I really like the new cd. It is great and I hope to be able to get tickets when he comes here. I have also been able to rekindle my fondness for the Let's Dance phase. I really do like it. I think it just hasn't been my favorite because I was so saturated with it when that record was out. I watched MTV almost non-stop back then and they were always showing videos from that record.
The only thing I find troubling is hearing Under Pressure and not being able to get Vanilla Ice out of my head.
Edit: Uglydot, as I was looking at this thread my 2 year old walked up, saw your avatar, pointed and started yelling KIRBY!.......IT'S KIRBY MAMA!

Yeah, Reality is really good. And for some reason, i always listen to Lets Dance, as well. Maybe its nostalgia. I dont know , but i like it now. I also been listening to his '95 release 1.Outside, which is really good. Kind of Nine inch nails like. Theres a whole story to follow through the cd, its really good, but very disorienting because of the many different sounds he uses in the songs.

Lyrics of the week(end) From 'Five years', of the 1972 classic 'Ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars'
Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies I saw boys, toys electric irons and T.V.'s My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare I had to cram so many things to store everything in there And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people I never thought I'd need so many people
A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children If the black hadn't a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a Cadillac A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don't think you knew you were in this song And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor And I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there Your face, your race, the way that you talk I kiss you, you're beautiful, I want you to walk
We've got five years, stuck on my eyes We've got five years, what a surprise We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot We've got five years, that's all we've got

Lyrics of the week: Coversation Piece-off the 1969 album Space oddity
I took this walk to ease my mind To find out what's gnawing at me Wouldn't think, to look at me, that I've spent a lot of time in education It all seems so long ago I'm a thinker, not a talker I've no-one to talk to, anyway
I can't see the road for the rain in my eyes
I live above the grocers store, owned by an Austrian He often calls me down to eat And he jokes about his broken English, tries to be a friend to me But for all my years of reading conversation, I stand without a word to say
I can't see the bridge for the rain in my eyes Ahhh-huh, h...uh, huh
And the world is full of life Full of folk who don't know me And they walk in twos or threes or more While the light that shines above the grocer's store investigates my face so rudely And my essays lying scattered on the floor Fulfill their needs just by being there And my hands shake, my head hurts, my voice sticks inside my throat I'm invisible and dumb, no-one will recall me
And I can't see the water through the tears in my ey-y-yes
