Title: I suck
Post by: The Omen on September 08, 2003, 11:35:04 PM
I've noticed a disturbing trend regarding me finishing games. I haven't beat Metroid Prime yet, nor Windwaker. Dead to rights? nope. How about Sunshine? No sir! Not even Eternal darkness. I don't know whats happened to me, but i used to beat every game i played. In the NES/SNES days, i beat over 100 games. Now, i'm far along in each, but something always pulls me away, like a new game, movies, writing, ect.. i did beat RE :remake, but even that took a few months of dust collecting before i ventured back to it. I think it has to do with getting older and having my career, along with other hobbies. But the disconcerting thing is, i still play a lot, just a lot of different games. I no longer spend hours upon hours on one game. Getting game guides would help, but i'm much too proud to do that. I just wouldn't respect myself. I still love games, especially when i have writers block, as it helps me stir up my imagination, but i still don't finish the games i like, and i'm always saying 'i gotta finish Zelda soon' . It just doesn't happen. Does anyone else have this 'problem'?

Be warned that I am taking your sig very much to heart right now, so be warned that I might not make much sense.
But I have the same problem as you. I did finish Zelda: Wind Waker and Eternal Darkness, but I can count many games that I have started but never finished. I just hope it doesn't mean that I am growing out of games personally, as I still very much enjoy them, and want to play them. I just can't seem to finish many of them these days. It seems like I get stuck in them for a few minutes and I move on to something else in the meantime. Hell, even a boring part will do that to me. It takes a well designed game indeed to make me finish it.
But like you, I can't even count the number of NES or SNES games I finished. Helll, I even got gold medals in all levels of Rogue Squadron. I don't know what is causing this either.

Yeah, me too.
But anyway, the worst part is, i just put in WW, and its been so long, i feel i have to start over so i know what the frig i'm doing. AAAARggggggg!!!

Don't feel bad, i'm in the exact same boat. As a matter of fact, i haven't beaten any of the games you mentioned, although i got them all on release day. i don't think i'll ever beat SMS; i just don't have the interest to play it, nor do i have the heart to sell it. Back in the 8/16-bit days i beat almost every game i came across, whether it was owned, rented, or borrowed. i do consult GameFAQs for those games i haven't played in ages, simply refresh my memory on where i was and what i need to do.
On the other hand, i've been beating games on previous systems that i never finished. i'm wading through Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast and i'm trying to be Metal Gear Solid for the umpeenth time (accidentally deleted my old save file), but Metal Gear Rex is kicking my butt. That Playstation's not going off until he's dead.

Well, I rarely finish a game. Many games get uninteresting at certain points. Often it's a frustrating boss/level, but it can also be a slowing of events (SMS, after nothing happens in the city anymore it got REALLY boring) or the collectathon where you miss one or two objects (MP and WW are prime examples here!). Five out of my 13 games I consider finished. That's a much higher ratio than with my PC games (almost zero to a few hundred).

I too rarely beat games. I believe the last game I beat was Luigi's Mansion which I rented a few months ago (first time I ever really played it for any length of time) before that the most recent game I beat was Eternal Darkness. Though this isn't only a recent trend for me. I tend to suck ass at most videogames so I've beaten very few SNES games due to lack of skill. I've actually beaten more Cube and N64 games. Still I find that due to work and a lack of free time I rarely finish games just because I either lose interest or I buy something new that takes away my attention. Here's a list of games I've bought since ED that I haven't beaten yet and why.
Super Mario Sunshine: I'm at Bowser's level but I keep dying on the stupid boat part so I've quit due to frustration (a common emotion when playing that game) but I'll probably come back again.
Metroid Prime: I just really REALLY suck at this game so I keep dying. Naturally this causes me to lose interest.
Star Fox Adventures: This is just really boring and really unfun so I've quit because it got to a part that's annoyingly difficult and the game just provides me with no incentive to keep going.
Wind Waker: All I have left to do is Ganon's castle. Traditionally with Zelda games I take a "break" when the last dungeon is all that's left because it means that there's nothing really left for me to discover and that the game is going to end. I will beat it though I just don't know if I'll bother to get all the figures for the Nintendo gallery. That's a big pain because of the "one figure a day" restriction.
F-Zero and Soul Caliber II: Well I just got them so that's why I haven't beat them yet though you can't really "beat" each game in the classic sense only unlock stuff. I doubt I'll unlock everything in F-Zero because it's just too hard.

iv been havign the same problem...i still havnt beaten RE and RE0, Metroid Prime(though im on the last boss....however it was late at night i needed the soudn off and i was tired so i didnt really try to beat her...i just said hi ran out of ammo without gettign hit and then quit.) and Banjo Tooie. Iv beaten every other game i have though(i just went mad crazy on SC2). My problem with RE and RE0 is i keep delting my files to play other games....and i cant get into it at the beginning anymore...its just to tedious.

i find there are two reasons: one, the fact that i have not found a game that has really "pulled me in" in the last little while. zelda did a bit, metroid did sort of, hitman did a little... but other than that... and two, sadly i have too much responsibility these days to devote a great deal of time to gaming. i'm finishing my degree up now in immunology and am getting ready for dental school, so any free time i have is spent eating or sleeping. unfortunately, i don't have the hour before class or couple hours after class and before bed, not to mention the hours upon hours during the weekend, like i once did to play nintendo. both these reasons are not separate, meaning like Grey Ninja said, if i get bored... i'm moving on to more pertinent things.

Strange, I seem to be beating games more and more often. I've beaten Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Wind Waker (even the Ninty Gallery), Metroid Prime, Star Fox Adventures, Super smash Brothers Melee (except for one trophy), and Super Mario Sunshine. Every game I own and then some. I'm also well on my way to beating F-Zero GX. Could be that I have no money for more games, but I still like doing everything in them.
Whereas on earlier systems it was the opposite (though I got much better during the 64 age). That may be because I was only about seven when I was playing NES, though, so it's forgivable. And for all this beating of games recently, I still don't play that often.

Well I don't think there's a problem with not finishing games. I think it just depends on the type of person you are. My cousin is like most of you; trying to experience all the games he can, while beating some, and abandoning others. I'm the complete opposite; I play very little games, but the ones I play get fully beaten, because I like to know everything about the game. After that's done, I move on to another game. Beating a game also takes a lot of time....which most of us don't have. Games could be beaten in a few hours back in the days, but now it can take up to weeks. Omen, you don't suck because you don't finish games

Yeah, I agree with her. I didn't, of course, mean to imply that leaving games incomplete was wrong. . . I just don't do it. Of course now I sound like a super geek with no life, but I really don't play that often. . . I don't know how I get all my games finished.
Yeah, so there's actually no excuse for not beating games! Get your lazy @sses up and go play!

Post by: Grey Ninja on September 09, 2003, 07:58:37 PM
I know what you mean Omen. NES games didn't have save files for the most part, and passwords sucked for the most part, meaning that you had to learn the entire game by heart in order to finish it. I remember I even beat Ninja Gaiden. I got to the last boss of Nightshade several times! (And Nightshade sucked. I never figured out how to beat the last guy, which explains why I didn't beat the game)
I think half of it began for me when I suddenly had access to all the PSX games I had been missing out on. I played a little bit of all of them, and I found I bit off more than I could chew, and got bored with all of them.
I am really proud of myself when I show the ability to have a sustained video game marathon these days. I played Zelda for 5 days straight when it came out. I did nothing else for those days. I did the same for Skies of Arcadia. I started playing Xenosaga and my own copy of Skies of Arcadia on Friday. I am currently 30 hours into Xenosaga, and I have put 5 - 10 hours into Skies of Arcadia. I am not sure what my total time in Skies of Arcadia is, but it's close to 30 hours. I beat Pikmin 3 times. I finally finished Mario Sunshine about 2 months ago. I finished all 3 parts of Eternal Darkness.
But I have about 10 SNES games I have yet to finish. Some of them are within an hour of the end. I have about 20 PSX games I mean to finish. Some of those I have accumulated about 20 hours of gameplay in. I am nearing the end of Metroid Prime. I swore up and down I would be playing the extra bits of Resident Evil 0 when I finished the game. I haven't touched it in about 6 months.
Anyways, that's it for my random thoughts tonight. I am going to go back to drinking, and I might play some more Xenosaga later.

My issue is that that not enough games have a consistent story that maintains my interest long enough to complete. So when I got ED I beat it 4 times, as I found the story interesting and compelling. Wind Waker on the other hand, started off awesome, but then when I was tuck sailing around the seas for what seemed like forever, trying to collect all the peices of the Tri-Force, my enthusiasm sort of teetered a bit.
Most recently I picked up FFTA and because of it's interesting story, I find myself wanting to play it frequently. I think that as gamers grow older, they often require more to hold their attention and interest. More action/more story/more strategy, whatever it is for that particular gamer is often what makes the difference between a finished game, and a game that garners dust.

Just because I'm motivated to actually think about what I have or haven't beaten:
SMS: Finished game, not all shines collected
LoZ WW: Finished game, didn't do many side quests
Fifa 2003: Nothing unlocked, played infrequently in season mode
NCAA Football 2004: Unlocked a few pennants, played infrequently on Dynasty mode
Def Jam Vendetta: Finished game with one character, unlocked all characters, finished about 50% of photo galleries
NBA Street Vol.2: In the midst of Street Legend mode, played rarely (at least at the moment)
F-Zero GX: Currently doing story mode and Grand Prixs, nothing but new stories unlocked. Played infrequently (just too busy)
Soul Calibur 2: Almost all characters unlocked, about 25% of the weapons, all arenas.
ED: Game completed, 4 times, absolutely everything unlocked.
RE: Beat the game once with Jill, played pretty much never.
RE0: Didn't even beat the game... kind of pathetic.
Animal Crossing: Fully upgradded my house missing one payment completion.
SSBM: HAD everything unlocked, memory card flopped out too depresed to get it back.
Metroid Prime: Beat the game with about 82% completion.
Rocky: Beat the game unlocked everything (This has got to be one of the most under rated games of all time)
Mario Gold: Unlocked several courses, no characters...
Those are about all the games I remember owning, but odds are I own more than I can actually remember.

Hey, I got a job, so now between school, more money for more games, and work, I'm sure I'll have a lower chance of finishing games now!
But somehow it'll work out I'm sure. Yesterday I beat expert on Sapphire cup (or the second one, I think that's the name, though) in F-Zero. Now for the last cup. . . then comes Kirby Air Ride, which should be fun but not too hard to beat.

KnowsNothing: You're finishing all the bad games and ignoring all the great games. Get back there and finish Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Ocarina of Time, SSBM.
There's only a few of my Cube games I haven't beaten yet- Pikmin, Jedi Outcast, Skies of Arcadia, and Ikaruga.

I know, I know.....shut up. I beat OoT on the N64, so that's why I didn't bother to on the GC. I'm still playing ED, but I've turned into a bit of a PIAC if you know what I mean. Metroid, and don't make fun of me, scares me WAY more than ED, and even I don't know why. SSBM I've played to death, and then my data was corrupted and it doesn't hold my attention long enough to play it again.
I'm getting Fzero GX next. I read some reviews on FFTA, and I decided against it. it looked pretty good, but AW2 has kicked my but over again many times, and more tactics games might bore me. I need something fast, something furious....f-zero fits the description quite nicely.

AAARRRGGGH!! I also have Xenogears, FF8, and MGS to play! Sooooo much to do....sooooooo little time!
actually, I missed some gardian force dude in FF8 that I can't get again, and it will ruin the whole game for me (in my mind). I doubt i'll play that anytime soon. but there's no excuse for the others!

Heh... The card game in FF8 was one of the few things I liked about the game. I played through the game again with the intention of getting every card. I missed one card. Laguna. Somehow I had just forgotten about it. DOH! But I never ever did get all the guardian forces. It just wasn't worth my while.

I love the card game, but I'm really bad at it. Triple-Triad, I think it's called.
I guess I missed this GF called Garfuncle or something, and it can reflect spells back at the caster person (?), and now I'm at the end of the first disk about, fighting the sorceress. Apparently, I heard, you don't have to win that battle, but I lost and had to replay it. I guess you just have to survive or something...help clearing this up would be nice.

I've beaten Ocarina of Time 6 times, plus Master Quest on the Gamecube. Master Quest, by the way, is great- they really ramped up the difficulty on some of the dungeons.
I haven't beaten too many of my PS2 games. Out of the 9 (well, I guess DDRMAX doesn't count, so 8), I've only beaten 4 of them. I still have FFX, MGS:2, Kingdom Hearts, and Grandia Xtreme to go (Grandia Xtreme's a dungeon crawler, though, so I have some excuse).

I have several games that I haven't finished. I have Skies of Arcadia, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Timesplitters 2 and Doshin the Giant. I went a little nuts about a month or so ago and bought all of these games within a week or so of each other. I have only played them for about ten minutes each. I just don't have time to really sit down and get into a new game. As far as other games I've not finished, WW and SMS have been beaten but not really completed. I beat Bowser but still have 5 shines to get. On WW I really slacked on all the sidequest stuff but did beat the game. I've decided that since I don't have alot of time to play games right now that I'll first "finish" WW since the sidequests can be done in small increments of time. After that I'll take another stab at the last few SMS shines, but some of those are a serious pain in the butt.

side quests? small increments of time? in the same sentence?
Ha.....ha! hahaha! What have you done of the Nintendo Gallery? None? You will be doing that for longer than playing the actually game. And you might have to do the game TWICE to complete it all. Maybe even THREE times, just after realising you missed that one opportunity to take a pictograph of that monster/person/thing.
Hahaha. Even I haven't finished it yet. I need one more. But you need the GBA connectivity to get it. -________________-

I try to finish all my games
Super Mario Sunshine - Finished it three times, got all 120 shines each time
Luigi's Mansion - Finished it 6 times, such a fun game
Timesplitters 2 - Still havent gotten around to finishing the story mode, finished most of the challenges and arcade mode though, loads of fun single player and multiplayer
Metroid Prime - Finished it twice, second time through was on hard mode, couldnt be bothered getting 100% though
Super Smash Bros Melee - Logged well over 300 hours into this gem, need one more goddamn trophy, awesome game. My most played game on Gamecube.
Wave Race - Done everything, unlocked everything, excellent racer, still play it every now and then
Resident Evil - Finished it 6 freaking times, played it to death, to unlock all the costumes, weapons and such, one of my favourite games all of time
Resident Evil 0 - The end part ruined it for me, still havent finished it, im stuck on some retarted boss that takes 30 minutes to get up to from my save, and i just die straight away, stupid
Eternal Darkness - Currently on my 4th play through, such an incredible game
Starfox Adventures - Finished it 3 times, loved every minute of it
Sega Soccer Slam - Havent quite finished this one yet, only just got it though about 1 or 2 weeks ago
Sonic Mega Collection - I play this nearly every day, its all my favourite games as a child, in one game, priceless fun
Mario Party 4 - This game can kiss my ass, played it about 6 times, boring get, my least favourite GC game
Rogue Leader - Same as Mario Party 4, except its my second least favourite GC game
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Probably my favourite game of all time, finished it twice so far, eager to play it through many more times. But i hate that stupid Nintendo gallery, tedious get, i dont see the point in doing it if its not fun, which its not, for me
Pikmin - Whoa, challenge mode has provided me with unlimited replay value, its so god damn addictive and fun. Plus ive finished the normal mode many times
Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 - Awesome! Addictive! Finished everything in both of them! Except master mode, which is impossible to unlock
And thats just the GC games .
Heh, yeah, i guess i just love games, which is why im at a gaming forum after all isnt it?

Some of the pictures you need to get are at the very end of the game, or the very beggining of the game. There are more than 6 characters that you never see other than at those moments.
Title: RE: I suck
Post by: Termin8Anakin on September 13, 2003, 10:34:32 PM
Here are tips for the taking photos and the gallery in general:
There are some characters you THINK that you can't take photos of the first time you see them. Like Cyclos, for instance, the frog that gives you the warp song. You only see him once - when you're fighting him. Once you fight him, he's gone. Forever. This is also the case with the bosses. Take photos of them as soon as you begin fighting them, cause you'll never get them again (there's the second time you fight them, but thats beside the point). There are some characters that you can only get through having photos of other characters. Example, when you take a photo of Grandma and make the figurine, you get the figurine for Aryll too. At other times, there are some characters you CAN'T take photos of, and have to buy, because you only see them in cut scenes. I'll let you figure that out. With the photos of some characters that are hard to get, like the one-time-only ones, the figurine guy will give you some leverage with the photos (eg they can be far away, not in focus, not entirely in the picture, etc) because they are hard to get, unlike the normal ones where you have to get that PERFECT picture cause you have all the time in the world to take them.
And why do you have to complete WInd Waker three times? You don't. It all comes down to if you remember to take photos of people and enemies as soon as you see them. Thing is, once you forget, and you realise that you will never see them again, you might as well start a new game. So for GOD'S SAKE, REMEMBER!

I only had to go through the game twice to finish the Nintendo Gallery. Annoying thing was that I had to go through another fifth of the game just to get one last picture (Mighty Darknut). I loved doing it, though, every minute of it, and I still go and hang out in there and look at the statues. Tis fun.
I have three shines left in SMS. I must get them before I have to return it (don't own it, this is the second time borrowing it). . .

The ONLY game I own and have never completed is Jet Force Gemini. I was rather enjoying the game and then I was told to go back and collect ALL of those freekin teddy bear things on top of a bunch of ship parts. I've hardly touched the game since.
Title: RE: I suck
Post by: Termin8Anakin on September 14, 2003, 08:11:54 PM
Jet Force Gemini really isn't that bad when it comes to collecting. Because at least now that you have the jet pack upgrades and can go thru the levels as other characters. If you could stand DK64, the bloody hell, JFG is a heaven in comparison, cause at least the tribals and the ship parts can be collected by anyone (except for bits that only one character can get). AND there's at least a tribal counter in the pause menu to see how many tribals u have left, and in which exact area, so you can at least plan ur way around the levels. The game really is good. You just have to get past the fact that Metroid is so much better (and similar - Retro would have done a really good JFG game had the license been kept by Nintendo), and that the frame is a bit jumpy and the graphics are blurry, as expected of N64 games. The only thing that pisses me off about JFG is the final boss battle with Mizar. It's tedious, annoying, and the only reason the game is satisfying to compete is cause you got thru this sucker of a boss.

Yeah, DK 64 was a chore. I completed the game but that dosn't mean that I liked it. Near the end it had nothing to do with winning and everything to with sticking it to the game's designers. I'm well aware of how little sense that makes but as twisted as it is, that was the only motivation I had. I was surrounded by other distractions when I was playing JFG that contributed to my abandoning of that effort. It was a fun game, I just couldn't find any reason to go on after that annoying discovey. I'ts been so long since I played it now that if I pick it up I'm totally lost. I'm afraid that I'm not going to play it all over again just to see the final boss.

I loathe that game. I never even got past the first level, methinks, and even though I played someone else's games who was past that part, it wasn't any better there ever. One of my top 5 worst games ever.

it wasn't great............but i liked it
The music in it was excellent too. My fave levels are Eschebone and SS Anubis, and Ichor just for the fact that it has a nightclub, and you can change the music. Want some phat tunes? Rock on! And if you haven't, or don't want to see the credits, it's Juno dancin in the club, Saturday Night Fever style.

Juno...dancing...didn't expect that. Did have wonderful music though. I've nearly downloaded the entire soundtrack.

Anyway, games I haven't completed yet: Metroid Prime - currently stuck Super Monkey Ball 2 - not as good as the first game, but will complete at some stage Rogue Leader - can't be bothered
Games I have, but have not started playing yet: Zelda: The Wind Waker () Skies of Arcadia Legends
(big reason why I haven't played these 2 games yet is because I went back to playing Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue and Shenmue II all over again )

Earlier in this thread I had mentioned not having "really" finished WW because of Nintendo Gallery and other sidequest stuff. Well, I'm actually making progress on the gallery (yay).
I have now completed the following rooms: Windfall Island, Outset Island, Forest Haven, and have all of the legendary pictographs.
There are a few rooms I am almost done with, but as you all know, I will have to start a new game to get the last few. I actually want to finish the gallery. Before I was not looking forward to it, but now I am. It is kinda nice to go to the gallery and see all the figurines. My son has been spending some of his video game time in my gallery. He likes them too but is too lazy to get them all himself.

Well, my gallery mission in Wind Waker was a huge waste of time. I'm posting this mainly to let those of you who think you can complete the gallery in 3 games that you can't. I had the gallery almost completely done at the end of my second time through. I thought that I'd start a third game and finish it only to be annoyed that it won't let you start a third game. I had to delete my file and am starting over as if I'm playing for the first time.
