Let's give it up for Namco...for the release of ToS in Japan and Soul Calibur II in the U.S.

Bleah, I am dying for ToS. I wonder if it will sell as well out here in North America as it has in Japan.

Thank you Namco. I remember having a heated debate in the forums about how if 3rd parties just put in the effort they could produce titles that would sell in droves. I thank you Namco for actually doing it. I can't wait for ToS to hit the stats and as with Capcom games on GC. I'll buy as many Namco games on GC that I can afford to show my appreciation for their excellent tites and excellent support of GC.

Yes! This is proof, that if 3rd parties actually put effort in their games, it will SELL! I really thank Namco for helping Nintendo, while no other company thought it was possible.

im really surprised with Namco. out of all the many discussions that have been on the boards since the beginning of the Gamecube, i dont think any of us expected Namco to support Nintendo this way, nonetheless be the company that helped Nintendo sell its most systems for one week at least! if anyone even tried to state this a year ago, im sure they wouldve been flamed to Hell with everyone saying that only a Square Enix game couldve done this.
Namco has definitely caught my eye. I never used to care much for them, but now they are making lots of games i really want (even non Nintendo system ones). they can definitely count on more of my money in the future.

Well it's not just that ToS is a great game, it helps that it's incredibly popular in Japan.

Final Fantasy's even MORE popular, and it failed to raise Gamecube sales as much as Tales of Symphonia did. Although, to be fair, FF:CC is really only a Final Fantasy game in name.

Man, those Sega ages titles sure flopped, maybe if they were on the NUMBER ONE console in japan, they would have sold better.

thats fan-fugu-tastic!
i totally didn't expect that to happen, if its moving cubes at this fast of a rate, then expect it to continue, obviously if it sold well yet cube sales didn't rise i wouldn't expect it to sit up the top for long, hurruh! can someone slap the rest of the 3rd parties in the face with these numbers to prove that yes effort + cube = sales = proffit? PLEASE?

I hope ToS sells well in America. Namco hasn't really advertised the Tales series much in the US and it has had pretty awful sales. I hope they change that with Tales of Symphonia.
Quote can someone slap the rest of the 3rd parties in the face with these numbers to prove that yes effort + cube = sales = proffit? PLEASE?
...well, Tales of Symphonia probably would have sold better had it been on PS2.

Not really. It maybe would have sold double on PS2, if its lucky, and the PS2 has about 10 times the user base of the GC. Which means more percentage of GC owners would have bought it. This is selling very good for a GC game.
That point is just... crap.

The point is, though, the game can STILL sell great on the Gamecube, just as long as they put the effort (and advertising) into it.

1. If ToS was on PS2 it wouldn't have been the same game. Being multiplatform or PS2-only takes the image of a game in a completely new direction, including the point of having a competition in this genre (huge on PS2, not so on GC).
2. They wouldn't have had a _special_ PS2 to bundle it with (it's a game's selling point, not only a GC selling point IMHO.)
3. Sony wouldn't have put money in advertising the game at all (as big N did).
All in all : we don't have a clue how it would've sell if it was on PS2.
It's just more obvious now (again) that the Cube has a really strong and expanding games library (the best of all three "next-gen" IMO).

People have PS2s for the Tales series. The last Tales game sold about 900,000 copies on PS2. That's why I think ToS probably would have sold better if it was on PS2 instead of GC.
Quote Not really. It maybe would have sold double on PS2, if its lucky, and the PS2 has about 10 times the user base of the GC. Which means more percentage of GC owners would have bought it. This is selling very good for a GC game.
Why should the size of GC's user base matter to Namco? The size of the console's user base is irrelevant.

You're kidding, right medmma? Obviously a game can't sell more units than there are consoles. The PS2 user base is HUGE, so even a small percentage of people who own one buy a game, that's still a lot of games sold. The Gamecube has sold very little in comparison, so even it a larger percentage buys the game, it's still sold less copies. 10% of 20 million is still more than 20% of 5 million. Since there's more people that can actually buy the game on the PS2, obviously it would have sold better, and since there's less people with a Gamecube, obviously it would sell less. If the PS2's user base were cut down to the Gamecube's, ToS probably would have sold the same on both. It has everything to do with user base- EVERYTHING.

Er, My point was that Namco should not care about the user base size ratio. Namco should care about how many copies they'll sell total.
Namco should not be all "YAY! WE SOLD 400,000 COPIES ON GAMECUBE WHEN WE COULD HAVE SOLD 800,000 ON PS2! OMG IT'S GREAT BECAUSE GAMECUBE HAS A REALLY SMALL USER BASE"

this is the most enlightening thing i have read in a while. as long as nintendo just continues to hang in there i am happy. i think we will see more 3rd party support from japanese companies because of M$ trying to get in the business. japanese companies should be worried if they arent already. video games are looking to the west for new ideas. they need to stay on top of their game before its too late. and i think that will help nintendo when it comes to 3rd party support. i just hope the gamecube can gain some momentum going into the next generation so they, along with sony, can stomp out m$ and all these other new consoles trying to get into the game.

I see your poing MeddmaWamm, but TOS appears to be expanding GCs user base. Its a system seller much in the way GTA was for PS and Halo Xbox. Nintendo should never look down on any 3rd party developer, because you just never know what game will make an individual buy your system. I think Nintendo has realized and are trying their hardest to make GC an attractive console to make a game for.
Nintendo could use a few more system sellers, and I think the new and future lineup of games contain at least a couple.

Dude, are you on drugs? 200,000 copies of a game is a LOT in one week. In one week they're already 2/5 of they're projected sales figure. By the end of the year I predict Tales will reach around 850,000-1 million.
And why are we arguing about this? Its on Gamecube and we should thank Namco for that!

I wouldn't say it was everything. Time Splitters 2 would have been the exception to the rule as it did sell similar numbers across all Sony and Nintendos console giving Nintendo a better tie in ratio thus tarnising your point you are trying to make there.
But your point is fundamentaly flawed. Your esimate is based on the assumption that both user bases have the same taste and have the same information which we all know isn't true.
But it is impossilbe to test how much a game would sell on each console as releasing it multiplatform would skewer the numbers. One would have to visit parralle unverses to prove whether a game could have sold better than X console than Y console.
Althought your initial point of a game never selling more than there are consoles will aways hold true. Not since Atari has anybody else pulled an E.T.

You can't even compare the two games. If you see the two in action you can obviously see differences. BTW The Cube's engine can handle better cel-shaded graphics. I'm no expert at it, so if someone can clarify this, but ToS is much prettier to the eye.
