Title: Help me pick a GBA RPG
Post by: DarthRacer on August 31, 2003, 11:42:21 AM
I need help picking my first RPG for the GBA.
The only other RPGs I have ever played - and liked - were Secret of Mana for the SNES and Pokemon Red for GBC.

I'm trying to find the right RPG for me. I found Pokemon fun to play, but I want something more adult. I am looking for an RPG that has more fighting than puzzle-solving. If the fighting involes strategy that is OK. What it boils down to is I don't like to think real hard while playing games.

Can anyone help?

the golden sun series are the best rpgs on the gba- but they have a lot of puzzle solving in the game- some of which are pretty tricky- the battles are not too bad- they dont require strategy until you get to the later bosses
if you dont like the puzzle solving element in golden sun, then i highly suggest you look into lunar legend for the gba- the game's battles are not hard but the story in the game is pretty good- it is a good game
later this year they are coming out with a new mana game on the gba that i would highly suggest you look into- it looks pretty good- its called sword of mana
but since you also like action rpgs (like mana) then i would also suggest looking into the castlevania games on the gameboy advance- they have rpg elements where you gain experience points from beating enemies, and you pick up new equipment and items to help you progress through the game- it is very fun- the best game out of that series to me was castlevania: aria of sorrow- it was very fun, but it was a little short
if you have any other questions just ask- i hope this helps you a little

I can't believe an RPG lover would forget Fire Emblem!  It comes out this November, so look out for it(it's strategy based, a la FF:Tactics and Advance Wars)

Breath of Fire II is pretty good, but nothing special.  The first Golden Sun is really good, the sequel errrr. . . Or just wait until Final Fantasy Tactics or CIMA comes out within the month.

Still many choices.
I'd prefer it to be more like a traditional RPG were you have a party with you instead of a single character.

Fire Emblem might be what I'm looking for.
Does anyone think the rules system in FF Tactics will ruin the gameplay?

Be warned, Golden Sun's story ends about half way through. Took me 20 hours to get there, a bit low for an RPG...

"Does anyone think the rules system in FF Tactics will ruin the gameplay?"

i dont think so at all- in fact i would think it makes it more fun- it gives you chances to do things in battles you wouldnt normally do- if you like tactics games, then final fantasy tactics advance is your pick- it looks really good

Phantasy Star collection.  It's three great (ok, number 3 is just good not great) RPGs for the price of one lame one (yeah, I'm talking about Golden Sun).

There's a thread for this at the top of the page.
