Title: Wave Race
Post by: mjbd on August 23, 2003, 12:23:28 PM
How is it that WaveRace64 sold extrememly well, and Wave Race B.S. only sold a fraction of that amount? I loved WaveRace64 and I love WaveRace B.S. I cant believe it didnt sell a million copies, B.S. improves in every aspect. I am hoping for a sequel, but probably wont see one until the next system comes out, if ever. Anyone know actual sales for WaveRace B.S.?

Waverace 64 sold so much better because it was ahead of it's time with the wave physics and there was barely any games available for the N64 at the time compared to when Waverace BS came out on GC. Also when Waverace BS came out, there were a handful of other jetski racing games out or coming soon.
Waverace BS is awesome though, truly a remarkable game. Another thing that might have hurt sales is people complained about the controls, but if they actually spent 10 minutes playing it they would get used to them, also if they looked closely they could see you can customize the controls from tight to loose... kudos to you for liking WRBS!

Not sure on numbers, but I'm sure there were several reasons for the dip in sales. When N64 launched the cupboard was pretty bare and everyone I knew with 64s started with SM64 and WaveRace. Plus, there was no XBox launching at the same time to rob consumers. WR got fantastic reviews, while WR:BS was noted as a solid game but not much different from the original. There weren't as near as many X-game like titles back in 64 days and now there are several waterbased ones as well.

I agree with Joe, just too many other similar games around. WR: BS truly was an awesome game, though. If it had more stages I would've bought it (I'm sorry, but 7-8(?) courses for ANY racing game is terrible. And yes I'm aware that the original had the same number.

I actually didn't like Blue Storm as much as the N64 version. I know most people would disagree with me on that, but I just thought there was something about the handling that wasn't quite right, and it really put me off the game. Not to mention the fact that I didn't buy it until quite a while after release, and the graphics just weren't that impressive by that time, and I was expecting a lot more from them.
I dunno, I might have to buy it again and give it another try one of these days, as I'm sure there's a great game in there somewhere.

The thing I noticed about the control differances is that in B.S. they were tighter. As previously stated, sepnd 10-20 minutes and they become natural. I still play WaveRace64 once in a while, I think the game still looks good, Sunset Island And the game runs pretty smooth, I think about 24fps, with a few drops here and there. I seriously think that there is need for at least one more WaveRace though, add in some more levels to. B.S. was definately an evolution of WaveRace64, and to me, thats a good thing.
