Title: Building a white box (or media box)
Post by: bmcg69 on August 20, 2003, 09:34:55 AM
I was listening to a radio program and these guys were talking about how they made "white boxes". From what I understand, it's basically a PC that you can connect to your tv and record shows and the like (basically just like Tivo). I did a search and found some companies (like Dell) make these white boxes. I am interested in making my own.
Does anyone know of a website that has instructions on how to put one together? While I'm computer literate, I'm not too good as far what needs to be hooked up where in order for it to work.
Any help is appreciated.

Get a TV Tuner. Install it. Record the shows you want to watch.

i would've thought the phrase "white box" would be more or less reserved, as it's a portable keypad/phone dialer (if memory serves correct) in phreaking circles.
Just Google up "Linux PVR" or something similar. If you've got parts from an old PC, costs should be minimal. There's also the simplest method; getting a tv tuner card like Grey Ninja suggested. You won't have a dedicated PVR, but it's quicker and cheaper than building one.
