 Accidently posted too soon...

Anyhow, my pc is telling me that I am displaying 1280x1024 resolution@160 hertz.  Now I am no idiot and I know that this monitor that I picked up for 7.00 at the local AMVETS is not displaying at those numbers.  Anyone know a way to tell how it is displaying at?  It's just a 15" packard bell, little guy just can't do that.

i infact have a celleron not a p4, and originally it said i had pro when i had home edition, yet this script (its an irc script) used to work perfectly with my 700, how odd!

160Hz? That's just wrong. At 1280x1024, mine can only do 60 or 70Hz, and mine is only a few months old.
As for your problem, I'm guessing your going through the on-screen display. I can't think of another way.
Get Grey Ninja, he has a rep for this kinda thing.

PIAC, the script you are using is probably out of date.  Celerons in the old days were identifiable because they only had 128k of L2 cache, and ran on a 66 or 100 MHz bus.  They were based on the Pentium II or III architecture.  However, the new P4 celerons are quite a fair bit different than the old school celerons, and it's likely that the script you are using can't tell the difference.  As for not being able to tell the difference between Home and Pro, well...  I have no idea.

UglyDot, I have no idea why your computer wouldn't be detecting your monitor properly.  My GUESS would be that your monitor is not supported under your OS, and it's taking readings that are way off.  You can try using some of the utilities here if you really must know that kind of stuff.  Personally, refresh rates don't concern me, and I am perfectly happy with 60Hz.

The current celerons are still based of williamette, and now northwood cpus. Difference is 400mhz bus, 128k L2 cache.

Yeah, thanks for the info.  I haven't been keeping track of stuff like that lately.  My eyes have been firmly focused on the Athlons and Pentiums, and not the Durons (do they even exist anymore?), and the Celerons.

my celeron is purely a stopgap CPU, once i get some more money im heading into p4 territory. i couldn't afford a better one when  i put my PC togeather, but i got a decent enough motherboard to support p4s

heh.  Reminds me of my Celeron 600.  I got a VERY nice motherboard for it, but I didn't want the heftier price tag of a Pentium III at the time.  The plan was to eventually upgrade to a Pentium III 1GHz, but that just didn't work out that great.

When it finally came time to upgrade my CPU, I found that a cheaper option would be to buy a new motherboard and a Athlon XP, as buying the two together would not only be cheaper than buying the 1GHz Pentium III, but would provide me with double the performance.

That plan just sucked.
