The Mario Odyssey countdown clock inches ever closer to zero, but for now we wait. James kicks off New Business with...the new demo of Super Mario Odyssey! A short tour of Tostarena provided endless diversions, and James burned through the demo timer with effectively no progress towards the stated goal. James also has early impressions of Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy. Syrenne did warn him, but early impressions are not promising. Jon was convinced to try TumbleSeed, a modern take on the old arcade machine Ice Cold Beer. He's enjoying getting it in the hole. Greg has also boarded the steam train - the SteamWorld Dig 2 train, that is. He heaps his own praise on this already well-praised game. Guillaume found time for some family fun with the crowd-pleaser The Jackbox Party Pack 3. Conversely, Snipperclips might expect too much of players for those without gaming experience, and Overcooked proves cooking with children is a nightmare.

After the break we bust out a trio of Listener Mail. This week we induct the first members of our Hall of Fame, revisit our earliest Nintendo memories, and examine the legacy of the Wii Shop Channel. You can write our press releases by sending us an email.

Here's a link to a video of some gameplay of Ice Cold Beer.  My local barcade has a unit of this arcade game, and I avoided it until about the 3rd time I went there and curiosity got the better of me.  It's a really enjoyable game, if you're the kind of person who likes gameplay that revolves around how much better you can do at a task after each round.  The dual-joystick control and the sensitivity of input on the two different sides of the bar you're lifting make it particularly challenging.

The fact Tumbleseed is based on this game piqued my interest quite a bit, but I heard it was notoriously difficult at launch.  They had done a patch a while ago that was supposed to taper down the difficulty quite a bit, although from what I've read, it's still fairly challenging.

At the risk of tooting my own horn, I thought the mailbag section was amazing this week. All three letters made for great conversation.

Jon being accused of writing my letter. I feel like a real breakthrough has been made! I try to bring the spirit of the old Now Playing at NWR to the Mailbag. Since James and Jon are my inspiration, maybe I'll try playing that song from Elite Beat Agents in the background when I write future letters. ;)

Since the RFN Hall of Fame's focus seems to embrace all of RFN, a few moments I think are worthy of nomination for some future class of this sure to-be august institution: The stinger where Jon and Jonny are podcasting in the same room, Jonny has a cold and Jon asks him if he wants some medicine. James and Greg's reaction to that is hilarious.

Perhaps there could be an exhibit dedicated to the games created by J&J Dream Factory. A wax figure of Roger Goddell as a mail boy in Megaton Commissioner of Rage, etc.

To up the interaction, you could have a bowling alley dedicated to Kimberly Keller's RFN appearance and review of Undead Bowling. She could make a weekly appearance and bowl with the HOF's customers. But only if they're dressed up as zombies. We don't want anything weird going on.

Maybe every time a customer goes through the turnstyle, we could hear a whip-snapping sound, to symbolize Gui's wiping the floor with his nephews at videogames. ;)

My earliest Nintendo memories would have to be playing Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600 or playing Donkey Kong on one of those mini-arcade Coleco units. I believe they used vector graphics. It was always so neat when the Icemen showed up in the later levels of Mario Bros.!

Not Nintendo-releated, but when I was really little, I remember playing Atari Football on the 2600. You couldn't control individual players. When you moved, the whole team moved in unison. Though it was a few years before I got the NES and became aware that there was such a thing as technological progfress in games, even at that time, I thought that football game was bad and stopped playing it. I hear people really wax nostalgic about 2600 games. There were some gems, but many of them, even the celebrated ones, are so bad! IMO.

Just to be clear about WiiWare, this isn't like the DSiWare situation where almost all the games can still be bought on the 3DS right? Once the shop goes down on Wii, we won't be able to buy them on WiiU right? Seems silly that they can't just keep it going on the WiiU, even if only for a few years (since they want to drop the WiiU ASAP).

Right, I should probably chime in with my earliest nintendo memories.

I know for a fact we had the Commodore 64 version of Donkey Kong. My parents had an Intellivision (dad mainly played B-17 Bomber and Space Spartan) and a Commodore 64 (lots of memories of playing Space Taxi and Jumpman, which had nothing to do with Nintendo).

My cousin had an NES. I'd be at his place quite a bit and I'd watch him play that. he also got a SNES near Launch. remember playing Super Mario World with him when it was new.

Christmas eve of 1992 is my most distinct memory, though. I was 4 at the time. My cousin had orchestrated the whole thing. he got Grandma and Grandpa to give up one of their old TVs they had laying around that they were going to garage sale. He got his mother to get me an NES, and he picked out a variety of games for me. Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet, The Legend of Zelda, Arch Rivals, Operation Wolf, Mighty Bombjack, and Mega Man 2. I remember being in tears.

I thought the early gaming memories discussion was very interesting. I would still like to know more about Greg's story of importing games back becore the internet was reeally a thing.

As for my own memories, its something I have thought about before, but was never really sure about. To start with, Im younger than the RFN guys, I was born in 1990. I have two brothers, one is 8 years older than me and the other is 12 years older. I had to ask them a few things yesterday to clear thing up.

The older brother got a Gameboy in 91. I can remember watching him play things like Tetris, Mario Land and Turrican on it. But Im fairly sure that is not my earliest memory.

Also in 91, the younger brother got an Atari 7800 for his birthday. The 7800 had been out for three or four years by this time, so Im thinking it may have been a used console. I was told he had Pitfall, Frogger and Pole Position, but I dont remember playing any of them. But I do specifically remember looking at the 7800 and finding it strange that the cartridges face towards the rear when inserted.

Then in 92 (which is a year or two earlier than I previously thought) the older brother bought a Super NES. There is a bit of confusion about what game that he got with it, but it may have been Mario Kart. I also have a lot of memories watching and playing Yoshi's Island, DKC2 and later DKC3.

At some point after getting the SNES, probably within a year, the Atari died.



For WiiWare games, Bit Trip Runner has to be one of the picks. Its my favourite WiiWare game by far.
Hydroventure/Fluidity is also pretty good, but I never finished it.

Oh, good point, Lemonade.

I sent an email as an ode to my one true Wiiware darling, but something has to be said of the Konami Rebirth series, which will all go away and probably have little to no chance of a re-release given Konami's stance on the matter. Castlevania the Adventure Rebirth in particular is wonderful, although Contra Rebirth is all right. it's just sandwiched between Contra 4 and the XBLA Hard Corps game, and Gradius Rebirth... really is more or less lives in the shadow of the excellent Gradius V.
