Title: Super NES Classic Mini Adds Rewind Function: Preorders Opening
Post by: Shaymin on August 22, 2017, 12:22:35 AM

Unexpected Hadouken in Street Fighter? THAT NEVER HAPPENED.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/45196/super-nes-classic-mini-adds-rewind-function-preorders-opening

The Super NES Classic Mini is packing some powerful modern conveniences under its hood.

A new trailer released this morning shows that all SNES Classic games will feature a rewind option. The time will depend on the game, as Super Mario World can rewind 40 seconds while Super Mario RPG can rewind for several minutes. Special border designs will also be available to fill wide screens.

As promised earlier this month, preorders have begun opening for the mini-console, with Best Buy and Amazon.com having first preorder runs overnight.

Amazon can go **** themselves over that nonsense last night putting them up under a different name so our email notifications wouldn't work, and Nintendo can go **** themselves for creating this situation in the first place.

Preorders open in Canada too. Hope you managed to get through in the sub-3 minute window of availability on either Amazon or BestBuy. I tried constantly refreshing starting 5 min prior to listing and instantly buying, but didn't manage to have it process so am probably not getting one. Hope others had better luck.

Was hearing reports that EBGames was taking pre-orders if you went to the store in person. Went there during my lunch break. There was a bit of a line. As the line moved on and I got to the till, I asked if I could still preorder one. The employee checked some list and said that I could and then made an announcement to the people standing behind me that this would be the last preorder they could take. The store was allotted 30 consoles and I was number 30. A few people left the line who had come in after me hoping to get one. That felt a bit awkward. In the end, though, glad I was able to snag a copy and it was much better than always hearing pre-orders are up on a site only to go to it and find I was too late. May want to check your local EBGames if in Canada on the off-chance they still have a pre-order quantity available. Otherwise, Amazon.ca and Walmart.ca are your last preorder hopes for whenever they launch. From there, it is camping out a store and hoping they have some available, I suppose.

I wasn't really involved in the NES Classic scene last year or trying to acquire one but I get the sense that there does seem to be a larger amount available for pre-orders with the SNES Classic than the NES Classic. That said, the supply is still constrained and there are plenty of people looking for some right now and there's a good chance some people are buying multiple copies in hopes of secondhand sales further adding to the current demand.

Yep, found out too late about all the online retailers preorders, then called all my local gamestops about a 1/2 hr after the tweet of them saying there were in-store ones.  All the local gamestops were out of stock.

Disappointed, but not surprised.  Looks like my chances are gonna be based on whether a store here acquires one to sit on the shelf prior to them discontinuing it.  Happened with the NES classic in my rural area, maybe i'll luck out again.

Rewind feature seems like a great idea

Welp, I missed out on the preorder.  Hopefully I can still snag one. :(

Rewind feature seems like a great idea

I'm glad you commented on that. For some reason, I was thinking about that as I was driving around to see if I could pre-order a copy. To my knowledge, the only game I can think of playing with something like that is the "-mo" series of Stretchmo, Pushmo and Crashmo. I could see that being a very useful feature in something like Kirby's Dream Course which is a bit more like a puzzler game where you may want to re-do some steps. But I wonder how it would work in something like Earthbound. If I have a battle where the RNG just goes completely against me through no fault of my own, can I rewind the battle and play through it again with new results? If so, I think that would be a very significant improvement to Earthbound's gameplay. It could also speed up the completion of a lot of games. Made a mistake in a bonus room in DKC? Just rewind and play it again. No need to have to play through the whole level again to replay that bonus room. Got hit by an enemy and lost some stars in Yoshi's Island? Rewind quickly to regain those stars and not have to play the level over again to finish with a full count of 30 to 100% the level. Weren't able to save a wingman in time in Star Fox? Now you can quickly rewind to try it again. If you are a completionist player then this could be a great benefit to speeding things up.

I think it's great that Nintendo is looking at some of these older games and still tinkering with them adding features to them. I've really enjoyed quick save states for the VC titles allowing me to save time by reloading from a certain spot and this rewind idea may also prove to be very handy. Hopefully, stuff like this can be further implemented in other classic games or future game design. I can think of many other games where that could be a useful feature.

Too bad you can't use rewind irl to get a preorder.

Ouch. Just you wait until I get my time machine working. Then we'll see who can rewind real life!

People are complaining about the rewind feature being overpowered, but it's not really any more so than save states already are if you want them to be.

Agreed, it is just convenient. Mila's Turn-wheel in Fire Emblem Echoes was a great way to let you get that one "do-over" you needed in an annoying section. Sure, it can be abused, but where is the fun in that? Glad Nintendo is embracing these tools for us older gamers who can't quite achieve the prime of our youth.

I think one of those older game compilations (maybe the Disney Afternoon Collection?) had the rewind feature, as well.

It's a neat feature that should be built in.  It's optional, so you don't HAVE to use it.  And it's a nice way to respect people's time for those of us whose time is limited.

Also, Rare Replay. That Rewind feature is the ONLY way some of those older Rare games should even be considered playable.

Nintendo is touting a feature relatively few people will be able to appreciate because they won't be able to get a Super Nintendo Classic to begin with. This is such a colossal LOL-Fail.

Some people just want the games at a decent price. Just make the collection available on Switch digital and retail. Problem solved.*

Yeah, but then I won't get that awesome plastic box.

It's absolutely an awesome plastic box, but those who only want the games wouldn't be competing for said awesome plastic box meaning more awesome plastic boxes available for everyone else.
