If you're in one of the cities, bone up on your Mario Kart 7.

Following a year's hiatus, the Nintendo World Championships are back.

Qualifying events will be held in 8 cities across the United States starting with New York and San Francisco on August 19 and 20. Qualifiers will be held in two age groups (up to 12, 13 and up) using Mario Kart 7 time trials. The best times in each age group will advance to the grand final, to be held at the Manhattan Center in New York on October 7. The full list of qualifying sites and rules can be found here.

In addition, the qualifier locations will also be holding demos for Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns.

...There's got to be some unannounced game that'll be one of the games used this time around.

Smash Bros Switch?
Mario Maker Switch?
Metroid Prime Federation Force 2 - Glitter Boogaloo?

Im convinced there has to be an unannounced game they're hyping behind this, though.

I hope it introduces a game that the contestants have never EVER, ever played...before.

Very unexpected. I wonder if this is meant to drum up more excitement for Super Mario Odyssesy closer to its release date.

Hope it's as good or better than the one held at E3 2015.

I was already planning to be in NYC that weekend, so this is pretty lucky.  I guess I'll fire up MK7 to try and git gud.

Excitement level for me is ZERO. Combination of limited locations (closest one to me is about a 6 hour drive) plus a 6 year old game means I don't really care about it. The only reason I would care is the chance to play Super Mario Odyssey early, but that is not enough to get me to drive 6 hours.
