With Mario 128 supposedly debuting this year in Japan, it would make sense to start showing it then. But lately, I have had a hard time figuring out Nintendo's future plans. I'll keep my expectations low because the last thing we need is another "MeGAt0n!!?!1".

Accually it may be games. Because it could be the announcment for Nintendo's online plans that they were going to announce "soon". And they usally don't announce an add-on with out any games, but I wouldn't expect anything new.

Well I think it's going to be Mario 128. Why? Well like that guy said, if it is gonna come out at the end of the year in Japan, Nintendo has got to show something to get hype up. Although I think the game won't come out till Q1 2004. But my other reason I think it will be this game is that remember that leaked info/rumour about the game being 2D and shifting to 3D etc? Well usually when info like this is leaked to the public, it's close to Nintendo's announcement. So I think because that was leaked, Mario 128's revealing isn't too far ahead now.

yea i hate these things because there either never is a press conference, or it's just an announcement that Nintendo has sold more GameCubes than Microsoft has Xbox's (which should be a no-brainer, Xbox is bad in Japan.. its actually pretty sad that the gap between Nintendo and Microsoft is so small)

wooooo another megaton *continues playing super starwars on the snes waiting* damn jawas :\
it could be anything, but without trying to get hyped too much mario 128 is probably the best bet, other than that i can only think that it would be something totally new, i mean, what else is there to show us? more specifically what would be the point of holding a press conferance unless its something huge?

I'm going to assume that this is nothing... because these stupid rumours ALWAYS seem to amount to nothing. Like someone said if there's even a press conference it very well might be something really lame. Sorry to be so negative but there's been too many rumours like this that have been total duds.

They aren't going announce new games for awhile.. there are too many coming out and they don't want people to want any more then they have announced already. Not too many people own more then 20 games for one system after its 5 year lifespan. I only owned 10 N64 games until gamecube was out and I found tons of cheap n64 games.

That would be silly for Nintendo to think that way. The public at large felt Nintendo's E3 was the most dissappointing, so this is good time to redeem themselves. Nintendo has already mentioned the existence of Mario 128 and the possiblity that we would see it by the end of the year. At some point at time they need demonstrate that it's not vaporware or has been moved to the next Nintendo system. This conference presents a good oppurtunity to get the hype going.
I doubt the annoucements of some true heavy hitters from Nintendo will affect fall and holiday sales. With only a couple of games coming out this year from Ninteno's internal teams, people are anxious to know what EAD, R&D1, etc are doing for the GamCube--if the main teams are still doing GC development at all at this point.

IGN just posted an article about the shockingly poor GameCube sales of 80,000 units world-wide for the 2nd Quarter of 2003 (April, May June).
At the end of that article is this quote by gaming analyst Takeshi Tajima:
"We want to hear something new and specific from Nintendo on Thursday to tackle rivalry with Sony," Tajima said.

Rhoq, correction on your statement: GameCube sold 800,000; not 80,000. A typo, I'm sure.
And to quote a separate part of the article:
Quote Nintendo president Satoru Iwata on Thursday will discuss the firm's business strategy and analysts are hopeful that he'll also outline the company's plan to battle rival Sony's recently announced PSP handheld, which is scheduled to launch at the end of next year.
So all they could be revealing at the press conference is an outline of a future GBA SP price cut or hype the GBA SP some more. Don't get your hopes up.

Excellent point. I wouldn't read too much into the Nintendo press conference. 9 times out of ten, these things usually turn out to be a huge disappointment for those who anxiously await the Megaton announcement, that never existed to begin with.
But then again...Nintendo also knows that the general feeling is that they failed to meet many expections at this year's E3 a few months back. They could use this Press Conference as an opportunity to deliver some long awaited and overdue surprises.
I'm interested in reading a detail of Thursday's events after the press conference, but I will not hold my breath for any major or groundbreaking announcements.

Accually it wouldn't be something to hype the SP since its the Gamecube sales they are worried about.

BlkPaladin, the reason I said it would be to hype the SP was because in the IGN article, it says,
Quote Nintendo president Satoru Iwata on Thursday will discuss the firm's business strategy and analysts are hopeful that he'll also outline the company's plan to battle rival Sony's recently announced PSP handheld, which is scheduled to launch at the end of next year.
Obviously, the analysts expect them to comment on the PSP. Which would, of course, lead to mentioning of the GBA.

Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony need to merge together to make one machine and make games fun again ... Just think: SNES 2.
Competition between machines worsens the overall quality of games that are produced today. If every developer could focus on just one machine, good things would definitely happen.
Wishful thinking, of course.

?!!??!?!?!?!?!??!??! okay, I'll pretend I didn't read that....
on another note: they put the quote: "We want to hear something new and specific from Nintendo on Thursday to tackle rivalry with Sony," Tajima said.
right after they say: Nintendo president Satoru Iwata on Thursday will discuss the firm's business strategy and analysts are hopeful that he'll also outline the company's plan to battle rival Sony's recently announced PSP handheld, which is scheduled to launch at the end of next year.
so, that quote has to do with them wanting to hear something new from Ninty in regard to the PSP, will it be about GBA then? I hope not, if they want to rival the PSP, I hope its GBA2...but knowing Ninty that's unlikely. Proves to be interesting, I look forward to the details regarding the conference.

Quote Nintendo Will Introduce a Point System to Reward Game Buyers
August 7, 2003 01:37 EDT -- Nintendo Co., Japan's second-largest maker of video game machines, will introduce a point system to reward those who buy its games and to illicit comments on what they like or dislike about the titles.

Quote Nintendo to give details of new product next year
Thu August 7, 2003 01:45 AM ET
TOKYO, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Japan's Nintendo Co Ltd 7974.OS said on Thursday it planned to reveal details of a new game product in spring next year, giving no further clarification.
President Satoru Iwata made the announcement at a news conference on the videogame maker's business strategy.
In January, Iwata told Reuters that the company was developing a next-generation home videogame console with the aim of launching it in 2005 or 2006, in a bid to restore its clout in the lucrative videogame market.
He also told the news conference that the company planned to strengthen its marketing by introducing a points scheme similar to "air miles", in which consumers would accumulate points by buying Nintendo products.
horray... -_-

..woo
meg... bah i cant even be assed finnishing that word.
aside from being slightly let down, it is a good idea, no better marketing and information gathering than asking the consumers themselfs, alternatively, asking sony/xbawx fans could prove a good idea also.
Title: RE:Press conference next thursday, new games to be reveled?

First off, what does it mean by "new game PRODUCT". Does that mean it's not a game and instead, new hardware or an accessory or something.
I think we can assume the new console will arrive in 2006. Nintendo constantly misses release dates that are supposably set in stone. So I doubt it will meet a "maybe" release date.
The point system could be really neat. I just it will include third-party titles too. It's already a problem that Nintendo fans only buy Nintendo games. The last thing Nintendo needs is something to make them less likely to give third-party games a chance.

i love the idea of a point system, especially seeing has how over half my GC library is made of Nintendo titles as i'm sure many of yours are, but that's gotta suck for third parties. Except in situations where the third party game is cheaper (like F-Zero vs XGRA), people have another reason to choose the Nintendo game over the third party game, higher QC being the first.
Title: RE: Press conference next thursday, new games to be reveled?
Post by: egman on August 07, 2003, 02:26:09 AM
I'm kind of torn by the announcement. While with all the stuff I buy I know I would benefit from the point system, I can't help but think that a missed oppurtunity occured with this conference. They have a looming problem with excess inventory heading into the 2k3 holiday season. While I can understand a price cut might have cannablized GBA sales, then why not put out a more aggressive bundle?
I expect the new game product would be the GBA successor. The PSP is already getting way too much hype, not only among gamers, but among some developers as well. I hope Nintendo also announces a new licensing structure because some 3rd parties are ready to jump ship completely when Sony gives the word.
I hope more news comes out of Nintendo soon about upcomming projects and their response to the overstock, because the last thing they need going into the next gen is the perception that they have given up on the GC and its fans.
