Title: Hippy Music!
Post by: Grey Ninja on August 03, 2003, 10:48:09 AM
I met my niece for the first time in like half a year yesterday. We live in the same town, and even though we are on good terms, and we actually miss eachother, we just never really got in touch, and didn't know eachother's address or phone numbers. (And we still don't). But I was just finished shopping at Safeway when her and a car full of her friends drove up. I got in and drove around with them for a while. Ironically, I completely forgot to get her phone number, so I might just have to bump into her at some point. It's all good though.
The point here is that her friends are a bunch of potheads, and I have smoked a joint with them on a number of occasions. Neither me or my niece smoke it at the moment, her because it was ruining her life, and me because I intellectually know it's not good for me, coupled with the fact that I have a drug test in a month. She and I have been through about the same amount of crap through our lives though, and we are both turning out fine.
But I was watching Old School today, and it just seems like all my old hippy instincts are kicking in again. Although I wasn't around for the 60s, I really do like the period, and the mindset and the music of the era. Somehow when I was collecting 60s music a while ago, I completely forgot Simon and Garfunkle, and I started to wonder what else it was that I might have missed...
So anyone have some good hippy music to give to me? I already have a whole whack of The Beatles in case that's what you might think.
Think of it this way: If you were going to make a music CD to give to Tommy Chong, then what would you put on it? That's what I want.
EDIT: Btw, does anyone have any obvious examples of the official "video" of the 60s might be? I found the American Graffitti DVD in Future Shop the other day, and I was absolutely swept off my feet by that one. I bought it of course, and it now graces my DVD collection. I just need DVDs of Willow, THX-1138, and the Indiana Jones Trilogy, and my collection will be complete. Anyways, my point is that American Graffitti is like the "official" movie of the 50s. I was just wondering if there was anything other than Austin Powers for the 60s.

The music that comes to mind is the stuff I grew up listening to. Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Jefferson Airplane, Mamas and the Papas....these are a few that come to mind.
As far as the quintissential 60's movie, I really think it would be Woodstock. I know it's a documentary buy I think it's the best choice.

Ms. Pikmin, will you be my Mommy?
Thanks for the advice. I will definately check those out. I have never even heard of Woodstock before, but I think I might be looking for that one later on today.

You've never heard of Woodstock? It was a huge music festival that happened in 1969. I don't know how easy the documentary is to come by, but if you are wanting to see something about hippies and 60's music, then this would be it. Also, I should have mentioned The Doors...how could I leave them off the short list?
And, instead of your mommy, how about a youthful aunt?
Edit: There is a sequel to American Graffiti called More American Graffiti. It catches up with the characters in the 60's. I don't remember much about it, but you may want to check it out.

heh. Point taken. Auntie Pikmin it is.
And yes, I have heard of Woodstock, but I didn't even think that there might have been a documentary of it (bloody stupid of me), and I will have to hunt that down. I might just get my drunken butt dressed and head uptown to look for it right now if it wasn't Sunday. Busses don't travel that much on Sunday. Still... I have 3 hours left before I would be taking taxis.
See ya later tonight.
EDIT: Yes, I heard about American Graffitti's sequel, but I have never been able to track it down. It's mighty elusive.

does your neice have food? yes it might be a good idea to get the scraps from your relatives.

Perm, I hope you are not trying to start a bunch of flaming. We are on another topic now, and insulting Grey Ninja is out of line here. STOP IT!!

Actually, my niece is living on her own as well. I don't know if you were trying to start something or not, but I think not personally. I was thinking about having her over for dinner sometime. We always shared our food, and it's been a long time since we have really sat down and talked. When we saw eachother the other day we shared an Angel Food Cake, but that's about it. And in case you were wondering, I bought the cake.
Oh, and by the way, I found a copy of the 25th Anniversary Edition DVD of Woodstock at Future Shop for $20. I might go buy that tomorrow. I have other movies to watch right now, and I should really return the ones I have rented at the same time.

"Somehow when I was collecting 60s music a while ago, I completely forgot Simon and Garfunkle, and I started to wonder what else it was that I might have missed..."
The Sounds of Silence is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's so ethereal and invokes so many images in my mind- I love it. I might not have lived in the 60's, either, but I'm definitely not going to miss out on it's music.
"I have never even heard of Woodstock before,"
You're kidding, right? I'm only 15, and my parents weren't any older during Woodstock, but I've known about it all my life. I really didn't think there was anyone who didn't. Wow.
And American Graffiti- George Lucas wrote and directed the first, and wrote the second one while Bill Norton directed it.

Ms. Pikmin, you really sounded like a mother there. Keep up the good work.
I'm really not into hippies and woodstock, or really any of the music from that era, save some Beatles songs. Alot of those rock. In fact, I just got that Beatles 1 Cd the other day and am loving it. It's kind of off topic but if your a Beatles fan, defidently pick that up along with Abby Road.
what I really came here to say was that angel food cake is the best cake in the world. put those weird, frozen, soupy strawberries on top with loads of whipped cream and.....ahhhh.... I'm in heaven just thinking about it.

Why the sudden interest in 60's music? Some if its good but I prefer Led Zeppelin anyday. I'm not sure if these bands were 60's bands, but War, The Turtles, and The Beegees are great.

Quote I just need DVDs of Willow, THX-1138, and the Indiana Jones Trilogy, and my collection will be complete.
What're you doing, collecting every movie Lucas ever made? That's a bit obsessive, man.
Title: RE: Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: Grey Ninja on August 03, 2003, 02:07:47 PM
mouse clicker, you have actually hit the nail right on the head there. I think I am undiagnosed OCD. I have moments of obsession, where I will just do everything in my power to obsess over that thing for a while. After a while, the obsession usually passes, but there are exactly two obsessions which never go away, and have existed for as far back as I can recall.
One is Nintendo.
The other is Star Wars.
I don't really have a problem with my obsessions myself. They don't disrupt my life to a great degree, and they give me a little bit more reason to move on through each day. The two I have mentioned above are the ones which are responsible for keeping me alive through my childhood (Nintendo most of all), and for that reason they are the continuous ones.

Love the original Star Wars trilogy, but not the two newer ones. I don't really like too much by Lucas, actaully. Like Indiana Jones, though.
Actually, it's Stephen Speilberg (sp?) that I really hate. I don't think I've liked even one of his movies. But the Hindu (or Hindi) guy who did Signs and The Sixth Sense, he's good.
Oh, and is OCD Obsesive Compulsive Disorder? I have always been facinated by that.
Title: RE:Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: mouse_clicker on August 03, 2003, 02:26:40 PM
I have a friend who claims he's a huge Star Wars fan- he saw both prequels opening day, he's read a ton of the books, he's played a ton of the games, he and I get in debates all the time, but he said he doesn't think the original trilogy was anything special and was pretty mediocre. I told him if he ever expressed that opinion in a group of Star Wars fans, he would be crucified.
Spielberg is great- he's adaption of Jurassic Park as wonderful, I love Jaws, and Close Encounters. You really need to see Catch Me if You Can, KnowsNothing- that's an incredibly good movie. Hard to believe it's based on a true story, too.
Title: RE:Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: Bill Aurion on August 03, 2003, 02:29:38 PM
How can one enjoy the prequals and not the original trilogy!? That's absolutely absurd.
Title: RE: Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: Grey Ninja on August 03, 2003, 02:30:21 PM
Steven Spielberg also directed or produced Saving Private Ryan, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Land Before Time, Pinky and the Brain, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Jaws.
Don't tell me that you don't like a single one of those.
Anyways, I am going to watch another movie.
Title: RE: Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: KnowsNothing on August 03, 2003, 02:34:22 PM
Forgot about Jurassic Park! I love that movie!!! Jaws is okay, as well as Close Encounters.
I really don't watch movies all that much, or listen to music for that matter, so I bet there are alot of great Speilberg movies that I haven't seen that are really good. I got to get out more. I just have no friends to go to the movies with. :\
Oh yeah, and then there are those movies that are kiddie, like Veggietales, that I want to see but wouldn't be caught dead in a theatre. Gotta give that one a rental.
Title: RE:Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: mouse_clicker on August 03, 2003, 02:50:42 PM
They're also religious movies, and I wouldn't be caught dead letting ANYONE try to shove their beliefs down my throat.

Mouseclicker, I , too, really like Simon and Garfunkle. It always feels good listening to their music.
My husband is a Star Wars/George Lucas nut. I have always liked Star Wars, but have not been obsessed with it like he is. I couldn't go around quoting it if my like depended on it except, of course, for "I've got a bad feeling about this". Anyway, we are waiting for Dear George to frickin' release the original triliogy on DVD *shakes fist at George Lucas*. A cool thing for us and Star Wars has been that our son was 4 when Episode One was released so we got to take him to see it and Episode Two as well. He is now a Star Wars fan.
I will say that although my husband is a George Lucas fan, I draw the line at Howard the Duck. I will fight tooth and nail to keep that film from entering my house.
Title: RE: Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: Grey Ninja on August 03, 2003, 03:57:46 PM
Oooh! Howard the Duck! how could I forget about that one! That one was cute. It wasn't supposed to be serious, it was another strange one ala THX-1138. It was created for George's own amusement.
I understand your fed up with waiting for the classic trilogy on DVD, as we all are, but you do understand that when it DOES come out, it will be the most special thing ever seen. A completely rescored version, with honest to goodness FINISHED special effects, and maybe even a few of the long lost cut scenes, such as the part where Luke is talking to Biggs by Toshi Station. At this point though, I think I can wait for the boxed set to come out. I would rather see Episode III released on time.

Don't tell me you were pissed Greedo shot first in the Special Edition of A New Hope, too, Ninja.
Title: RE:Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: Ms.Pikmin on August 03, 2003, 04:05:00 PM
Oh, I know it wasn't supposed to be serious, but I still hate it.
You're right about the trilogy. I can wait. I am glad to see that the Indiana Jones trilogy is coming out. I liked the 1st and 3rd especially. AND this was a time when Harrison Ford was HOT.
Title: RE: Hippy Music (and Movies)!
Post by: Grey Ninja on August 03, 2003, 04:05:46 PM
Nah. I was more upset at the jerkiness of the animation, where you could clearly see that a piece of the film was cut away in that shot.
I must say that I really did love the new ending written for Return of the Jedi though. I miss the good old yub-yub song, but I think the new one fits a little better, and the new scenes are too good to pass up. I just want to see more like that in the DVD release.

I never liked Star Wars, I never really got the idea of it, just bored me. Catch Me If You Can is actually a great movie. Tom Hanks is an awsome actor, and Leonardo Dicaprio is a good actor too if you look at his acting skills. I dont understand why people call him ghey when he can get any chick he wants.

what about MC Hammer?
oh also mouse_clicker, slap your friend in the face for me no-one can call themselfs a starwars fan and consider the original trilogy 'mediocre', and then impale him with an x-wing model
as for the music of the 60's i could ask my parents if you want, they have quite an extensive collection that spans from motzart to the beatles to jethro tull (AWSOME BAND!!!!!) to metalica (who i dislike, damn old people )
my recomendation to all is get some jethro tull, they started in the 60's and are still going today! heavy horses is an awsome song/album, so yeah get buying/downloading
edit: bloody hell! i pressed 'reply' just after mouse clicker's post, i reply and there are like 6 before mine . im a slow typer!

They ended it with the guy getting all tangled up in those ridiculous huge pants he used to wear and falling off the stage.

I saw an interview with MC Hammer on Conan where he said at one show he jumped off an amp and when he landed on the stage, it broke and he fell through. He instantly jumped out, though, and everybody thought it was a stunt.
He also elaborated on Conan's famous "stringed hip" dance.

The whole religion thing ruins all the humor for me. It's like listening to Christian rock- the music itself may be good but to hear some guy ramble on about jesus and god it just ruins the whole thing for me.

Just a quick follow up on this...
I went out and bought the Director's Cut DVD of Woodstock today. This was based solely on Auntie Pikmin's recommendation, so I guess that speaks volumes about the trust and respect I have for her.
I just want to say that even though I am only 20 minutes into it, it's already proved its worth to me. Watching the movie is like being in the 60s, and that's exactly what I was looking for. Watching the interviews with the townspeople being over-run by a bunch of "the nice youngfolk", and seeing the aerial shots of the parked cars and the tents set up is simply awesome.
You know... this movie makes me really depressed that I missed Sarsstock.

oh no i wasnt tryign to start soemthing, in another thread Grey Ninja was talking about his gaming addiction and how he has a very limited diet of ramen noodles and hwo his body was really gettign tired of it. When i read he had a cousin the first thing i thought was hey...he can try to his cousin up for soem food. Its good to hear he had a nice delicious angelfood cake. Those carbohydrates will aid him greatly for the strenous excercise that is typing and gaming.

Awww, thanks. I'm glad you are enjoying the film! Is the music inspiring you at all? Since you had mentioned wanting some 60's hippy music I wondered if the film was also helping to satisfy that curiosity and need.
Perm I'm sorry for jumping on you if I misinterpreted your post. I knew about the food/gaming post which was why I jumped on you. I thought you were throwing it up in Grey Ninja's face. We had just pretty much ended a very emotional and heated debate on another thread and I thought maybe you were angry or something. I just wanted hostility to end. This game is bloody incredible. There just isn't much better than flying around in a Cobra blowing stuff while listening to the sounds of the 60s. Now if only some developer would make an "Extreme Vietnamese Sports" game, I would be a HAPPY man indeed. =) I would RULE at gunboat waterskiing.

I didn't know Spielberg did Who Framed Roger Rabbit. That's one of my favorite movies ever. He also did AI. They cancel each other out in terms of credit for him.
I'm not a big fan of hippy music, it's sort of hit and miss whether I like it or not. I'd probably be close to manunited or theperm in liking it, I suppose.

THE DOORS...
their music is great, erry, I was obsessed with them in highschool & Jim Morrison. Their best music is the stuff that never gets played. If you want something unlike anything else pick up An American Prayer album.
It's Jim Morrison recorded poetry around the year he died, and the remaining members put music to it 8 years later.
