It's a very multiplayer kind of week for Radio Free Nintendo. With the launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the crew manages to touch on a whole bunch of multiplayer experiences, now available on Switch. Jon and James kick-off New Business with a recap of their stream with frequent co-conspirator Syrenne McNulty. First up is Puyo Puyo Tetris, the Puyo/Tetris anime hybrid in which Syrenne absolutely wrecked them both. They then move over to Jackbox Party Pack 3, a game that has the host using their Switch while the rest of the players draw on their phones. Unsurprisingly, it turns hauntingly phallic. Speaking of which, Miis are back in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Greg joins Jon and James to talk about even more multiplayer fun. The team also touches on new features such as Steering Assist (and how playing 200cc Super Mushrooms Only is virtually impossible without it), and the chaos of the improved battle modes. Guillaume closes out New Business with a recap of the Game Boy series Super Mario Land. It turns out these games are really strange. He also looks at the PC port of N64 "classic" Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

After a break we answer Listener Mail. This week we look at the fate of Download Play, project the influence of Breath of the Wild on future Xenoblade games, and dubiously encourage conspicuous consumption of the New Nintendo 2DS XL. I'm certainly glad a certain someone could help get the Tee K.O. memes a'trendin'.

I actually have really, REALLY fond memories of Super Mario Land 3 as being one of my favorite Pre-Pokemon GB games. while it's hard to suggest due to... well, availability, Virtual Boy Wario Land trends a lot closer to Super Mario Land 3 than it does the other Wario Land titles, and that's probably a big reason as to why people claim that, TeleroBoxer, and Jack Bros. are the reason to subject yourself to horrible migraine zone.

Treat Yo Self happened with me in March with both getting my PC Build finished AND getting a Switch. the unfortunate reality is that I've since had to settle for part time work/unemployment, so I'm reeling from it a bit still, but I regret nothing.

The xenoblade talk was good. Its going to be very interesting to see what they show of the new one at E3.
I played and liked both Xenoblades, but finished neither because of high difficulty nearing the end. I think Breath of the Wild was so much better than both of those games, so Xenoblade 2 will have to be amazing for me to buy it.

I believe Konami (back when they cared) led the charge on doing download play for NES games, as I distinctly recall beating Life Force and getting pretty far into Super C using a friend's copy of the game for 2 player.

My parents bought themselves an NES pretty late in the life cycle. I was born in 89 so my first video game memories were playing that. However, the first system they bought for me was a gameboy with super mario land 2 pack in. I played that game all the time and it wasn't until I was much older that I realized that it was the "off-brand" mario game.


I also love Shadows of the Empire. My folks bought it for me even though none of us liked star wars. I think the clerk just recommended it for Christmas and that what I got. I was so terrible at games that I only saw the hoth level for a long time and was super surprised there was on foot sections when I got to them. I remember falling to my death on that train level over and over. 


Xenoblade freaked me out when the quests started checking off w/o me going back to the townsfolk. I also kept reloading a save before a boss w/o realizing there was no penalty for death and I was making the game harder by reloading. I'm also terrible at JRPG and don't have a ton of experience with them.

Watching/listening to the stream made me reaize what we miss since RFN stopped recording the bits inbetween segments. Like Jon posted on Twitter: Greg Leahy on Death Wish III: "It's challenging, as all true art is meant to be." That gold is so radiant, I had to put on sunglasses. :)

Looking at the rate Syrenne buys games, a 1 TB microSD card can't come soon enough for the Switch!

I thought Super Mario Land 2 was great. The size and design of Mario's sprite was impressive back then. I liked the themes of the worlds and the characters. The music was good and off-kilter. Almost felt like Mario was through the looking glass even more so than SMB 2 (a game that wasn't meant to be a Mario game in the first place!).

I wish Nintendo would take more chances with the design/look of games like they did during the SML 2/Link's Awakening days. It doesn't always work out, but as games like Breath of the Wild and hopefully Super Mario Odyssey prove, they usually produce something special when they do.

SOTE. I had the game during the early N64 days because it looked like it'd be fun at the time (plus I wasn't going to ask for Crusin' USA, so choices were slim!). The Hoth battle was fun and defintely the higlight of the game. The everpresent fog, especially in the on-foot sections, was kind of annoying, even back then, when that was a fact of life for many 3D games. The train level was a drag. Overall, I enjoyed it, but don't feel a need to return to it.

Thanks for selecting my song choice for the ending music. I was unaware of the background behind the name "Rith Essa", so that made it all the better. :)

I miss the now available shenanigans too. I have to admit, I listened to the show for months before checking out the website, and was completely confused for the first couple weeks (until I figured out the RFN/NWR distinction).

Maybe you guys should let Syrenne do a now playing style segment for the break? that, or maybe get the website's other podcast content to give gui a snippet to edit in as a teaser to what sort of other great audio content that can be found around Nintendoworldreport/Crosstawk?

Now Playing was this weird disaster that Jon and I were assigned like homework. We took it as not seriously as possible, sometimes approaching the line of good taste. I'm not opposed to doing something deliberately silly in the middle there, but we'll need to figure it out. As it stands, I'm toying with a few different ideas for the show - but nothing is really sticking just yet. Making the show a bit easier to make is a big item on my 2017 goals.


When we used to record the entire session the show was a lot shorter and recorded at dramatically lower bitrates. The file sizes we would be editing at this point would give audacity fits. What's funny is the long-running conversation about Golan Globus (and Cannon) was all post recording. This means it was like Midnight my time, and we're talking about Keaton's Cop - a movie where Abe Vigoda and Don Rickles are not funny.


I've thought about finding cause to fire off our conversations in some other format, but that's not gone anywhere. Maybe. Some of the shooting the **** during the stream last week is sort of in vein.

Mario land is a bad game.
Mario land 2 is a good game. Is flooty now but back in the day it was a legit Mario game on gameboy. It was good.
Wario land is brilliant
Wario 2 and 3 I just didn't like.

The first wario is the best and finest platformer in the og gameboy.
